Conversations about life on the road with she/they travelers from the folks who have lived it firsthand. Hosted by Laura Borichevsky, "On the Road, our Way" is an archive of the podcast formerly known as "Women on the Road" released between 2017 - 2020. A production of Ravel Media.
This is the last episode of Women on the Road, but by no means the end of our community. In fact, we are incredibly excited and honored that Noami Grevemberg and her team at Diversify Vanlife will be helping to evolve the podcast you hear on this channel moving forward, with a total reboot taking place in October under a new name, Nomads at the Intersections. In this finale episode, Noami and Laura talk about what this transition means to them, as well as how we hope to see you take part in where we’re going next.

For some of us, what got us in the car in the first place are the things we’re running from-- but no matter how many miles we drive, those things end up in the passenger seat, along for the ride with us. Kathy Karlo, a climber, writer, Director of No Man’s Land Film Festival, and host and creator of the For the Love of Climbing podcast, is someone who knows the contents of her passenger seat well-- both literally and figuratively. And she uses the weight of what she carries to build something bigger than herself.

This platform as you know it started several years ago in response to the lack of representation of female road travelers in the media we consume. After over 100 written interviews published online, followed by more than 100 episodes of the WOTR podcast and the growth of this tight-knit online community, we know there are still more conversations to be had.
But we also feel, more strongly than ever, that in the spirit of what WOTR has aimed to do-- broaden our perception of who is on the road, and elevate those voices and stories-- that our current team at @ravel.media are not the ones who need to be hosting these conversations moving forward. That’s why we’re making some big changes.
Thanks to Diversify Vanlife, we are partnering to evolve this platform so that it can further serve the conversations that aren’t being had enough, led by the people we need to hear from most.
Starting in October, Diversify Vanlife will replace the WOTR podcast under the name Nomads at the Intersections. This monthly show, hosted by founder Noami Grevemberg and co-host Anaïs Monique, will shift the narrative and navigate the challenges, journeys and inspirations of the modern nomadic movement while diving deep into the stories of underrepresented voices.
If you’re already subscribed to WOTR on your favorite podcast app, you’ll automatically start getting Nomads at the Intersections content as the re-launch approaches. We’ll also drop some exciting updates right here as well as via Instagram @diversify.vanlife, so just sit tight, make sure you’re following along, and we’ll keep you updated.
WOTR as the show you know it now with host Laura Borichevsky will be on air until Friday, 9/18. You’ll still be able to listen to past episodes after this date on the same podcast feed. We have some special things planned for our final two episodes so we’re hoping you tune in!
Thanks to each of you for being here for what this community has grown into, and we’re excited to have you here to see where we can all go together next.

Whether on or off the road, it can be easy to tell yourself you can’t do new things. That you’re too inexperienced. That you don’t have the skills. That you’re not qualified.
If that’s been you, then this episode is just what you need to hear. Because Laura Edmondson-- a road traveler, digital creator, educator, podcast host, athlete, and DEI and Sustainability consultant-- has got a lot to say about moving forward in the face of feeling unqualified and showing yourself that it’s possible.

Nobody ever said living on the road was easy, but it definitely teaches us life lessons. In this episode, van dweller Anna Tedesco shares what she's learned from over two years of solo road travel, how it's helped her navigate the mental and emotional challenges a pandemic can bring about, and the important role cooking good food plays in all of it. Whether you need some accessible outdoor cooking recipes or a solid reflection on the life lessons the road can teach us, this episode is for you.

For many reasons, many of us have been traveling less and reading more right now, which is why hearing from mother, outdoor adventurer, Licensed Nursing Assistant, and book reviewer Alessandra Hurt is especially important right now. Because what we can learn from stillness, BIPOC authors, accessible travel, and Alessandra’s insights on motherhood are all lessons we can use to make our world a better place.

It feels more important than ever to re-think our role models. And adventure travel journalist, pilot, and deep water diver Kellee Edwards is someone who’s been paving a path on the road, in the air, and around the globe for years. It’s not just her passion to take herself to new heights that we’re inspired by though-- it’s the way she wants to bring everyone else with her.

As a queer couple, Natasha Seitz and Beth Luby challenge the notion we hear often online from white, straight couples: that the road always feels safe and strangers always seem welcoming. Because the reality is that safety also equates to privilege, and it shows up in the ways you camp, where you travel to, and what you do when you get there. In this episode, we get to know Natasha and Beth and dig into the safety considerations they make often while traveling, how intersectionality comes into play, and how your gut and your head sometimes tell two different stories about what’s really going on.

We didn't ask, but we bet if we had, traveler Denise Meeker would say that coming home to yourself isn't a one-time act. It's personal, on-going, and sometimes shows up in ways you don't expect. It also can include hard, internal work. But we're really thankful to get to hear her story of coming home through spending time on the road and in the outdoors to underline the importance of you telling yours.

The truth is this: as white women on the road, we’ve taken up a lot of space within the #vanlife movement. And it’s long past time to unpack how white women’s presence in popular road travel negatively impacts the Black traveler community. So in this episode, we spend some dedicated time addressing topics related to antiracism within the modern van life movement, why it’s been so tough to see positive change in this community, white women travelers’ collective role in all of this, and how to develop the practice of lifelong learning when it comes to antiracism work.
NOTE: We wanted to recognize that, in addition to the update at the top of this episode we recorded to address some community feedback regarding the topic of assimilation, we also want to call out thanks to another incredible community member that when we discuss classism (vehicle and event ticket affordability being two examples) in this episode alongside racism, we are perpetuating the limiting and harmful narrative that folks in BIPOC communities are in lower socioeconomic brackets. Furthermore, this action is an example of a microaggression, and something we apologize for and take seriously. We are linking an additional resource here to underline why linking classism and racism is problematic so you can continue to learn alongside us. To our listeners: please listen critically.

Road travel can take many forms. And Alexandra Keeling knows this better than most-- because she's done a lot of them. From RV life, to towing a small trailer, to sleeping out of the back of a car, Alex's journeys on the road so far have shown that no matter how you travel, it all counts. Because regardless of your travel style or what you're hitting the road with, everyone is susceptible to unexpected surprises and challenges. Alex knows this part better than most, too-- but that’s her story to tell in this episode.

Can we hit the road responsibly during a pandemic? As someone planning to car camp or take a drive into the wilderness, you might not feel like you alone could make a huge impact on this pandemic-- but the reality is that travel can lead to transmission-- which means that travelers have the capacity to create an immense effect on the trajectory of viral spread.
The good news is that we’re not here to make you feel guilty. We know you want to travel (we do too!), but more importantly: we want you to be knowledgeable and prepared, whether you’re planning to get out there soon, or hoping to sometime later in 2020. In this episode, we’re aiming to help in that process by providing you with questions, tips, and tools to make your own, best decisions at the time. We look at information through the eyes of women who love to travel and also hold public health as a top priority: Seattle-based nurse and overlander Emily Scott, travel nurse Em Cheng, and founder of the Outdoor Advocacy Project, Katie Boué.
So tune in and get ready to be honest with yourself when it comes to responsible travel. Because the safer we are collectively, the more we can actually go out and do.

This episode honors the mom figures in our lives who inspire or encourage dreams of road travel by paying tribute to one mom in particular: our host Laura Borichevsky’s mom, Jackie Hughes. Before #vanlife… before Instagram… before she could even drive: Laura’s belief in her ability to do road travel was shaped by her mom’s experience driving across the country when she was in her early twenties, and it stuck with her because Jackie’s journey was full of purpose, bravery, and quite a bit of fun packed into a handful of days and a tiny 1975 Camaro.

Britany Freeman’s had a problem for a few years. She wanted this one van. And not just one kind of van. But this one van, which she named Alice years before it was even hers. Alice has slipped through Britany’s fingers more than a couple times, and through it all, she could easily have given up. But what makes this story good news is that she didn’t. And what makes it great news is that as of a couple weeks ago, that van is now sitting in her driveway, undergoing a lot of TLC and DIY renovation projects.

Becca Foss, long-term road traveler and outdoor guide, knows firsthand through the loss of her husband that sometimes you just have to find ways to push yourself through. It might be climbing a steep hill on a loaded up bike, sending a rock wall, or facing unexpected tragedy and learning how to meet it head on. Being strong doesn’t always look like pushing past your limits. Sometimes it simply looks like showing up regularly and sticking it out. Because when we keep pushing through, even just a little bit at a time-- eventually we do reach the other side.

Mental health is something we've talked about before on the show, but never before has it felt more important to dive in. That's why this week, we took some time to focus on what challenges, resources, and tips this community has and needs. Whether you're a full-time traveler and your shelter is a car or a tent, or you have a more stationary place to stay and you're feeling stagnant-- the reality is that this forced by necessary stillness is a challenge for us all, on top of the anxiety that can be triggered during crisis.
It's a good thing for us all that insightful, compassionate folks like Grizel Williams are a part of our community. Grizel lives on the road and is a writer with background in mental health counseling. After years in the field, she shares what mental health considerations she's thinking about now-- as well as what resources or practices we can all look to during this especially challenging time.

Giddi Oteo, former full-time road traveler, has an inherent knack for holding both the real, transparent truth and the beauty around her. You’ll hear it from her as she shares about pregnancy and motherhood on the road, starting her travels with nearly no money, and building a business from scratch. And it’s a reminder that no matter how heavy a life chapter might feel, it’s still possible to find beauty and happiness around you.
So if you’re in need of a pick-me-up that doesn’t sugar coat things-- one that gives you permission to both recognize the heaviness of where you’re at, but also one that encourages you to find some beauty around you today-- then you’re in just the right place.

A timely episode for travelers out there wondering about what decisions to make in light of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that has caused a global pandemic in recent weeks. Through the voices of two experts-- Registered Nurse Emily Scott and public health emergency planner Kate Pifer-- we navigate both baseline information as well as the challenging nuance of what it means to be a traveler in light of recent world events, while walking away with the message that how and when you travel does truly impact the lives of others.
Things feel very heightened right now when it comes to cancellations and travel restrictions, but we could see a time in the future where travel feels safe again even though COVID-19 exists in our communities. The reality is, we don’t really know. So if you’re listening to this episode, we encourage you to do so not only with the next handful of weeks in mind, but with a long-term mindset of what it means to be a responsible traveler and containing the spread of harmful disease, even you yourself don’t feel personally impacted.
** Please note that these interviews were both recorded on Sunday, 3/15 and news, public mandates, and what we know about public health best practices are all evolving rapidly as we learn more about COVID-19 and its impact on the world. This information can be helpful but should be supplemented with verified sources such as (but not limited to) the links provided here in our show notes.

Brittany Newson, an Air Force veteran, current student, and recently married female traveler knows that the road can be an incredible facilitator of new life chapters. But she also helps us to see in this episode that travel on its own doesn’t create the changes for us: it’s what we do with it when we put ourselves in the driver’s seat that allows us to turn the page on our own terms.

Travel nursing is an incredible career that enables you to both help others and get to see new places. But just like any job or form of travel, there are always aspects that can get over-romanticized, and travel nursing is no exception. Em Cheng, a travel nurse currently exploring the West Coast, joins this episode to share some of the practical aspects of becoming a travel nurse and why she loves it so much, as well as address some of the biggest challenges associated with taking on this fast-paced career. For Em, being successful and well-balanced in her traveling line of work comes down to self care, which is hard for all of us-- even nurses.

Whether it’s for the holidays you celebrate, the time you spend reflecting, or the gifts you exchange out of love or habit-- the year’s end is full of reminders of family. And family is complicated for a lot of us out there, especially when travel is also a big part of our lives.
We know that there are so many feelings and stories out there when it comes to how this community defines family. So we recently asked you all to submit voice memos telling us all about it.
Whether it’s people you grew up with, the chosen family you’ve cultivated over the years, your dog, or something else entirely— we asked: how do you define family? And how does it interact with who you are as someone who likes to hit the road?

We heard a lot of insights, new experiences, and beautiful sentiments the weekend of the Women on the Road Campout last month— and if you know us, you know we couldn’t keep it all to ourselves, so we wanted to share a piece of the experience with you.
That’s exactly why our team took a mic around and asked a handful of attendees each a few questions. The result is 12 voices, recorded live at the Campout on Ute territory just outside Moab, Utah, sharing a bit about their travels, reasons for coming all the way down a dusty backroad to meet us here, and what they’re taking from this experience.
In this episode, you’ll hear the voices of:

When we first connected with part-time van traveler Maggie Lam, it was about a post she had written and we reshared on social media. And it was about small gestures Maggie has experienced during her travels, why they you might not know that they are in fact microaggressions, and why representation of people of color within the road travel community matters. So we wanted to have a conversation with her about those small gestures, which you’ll hear in this episode. Through it all, you’ll also get to hear about the small gestures that truly make a positive impact-- like listening to and amplifying underrepresented voices-- and how you can use your privilege for good, both on the road and when you’re stationary.
If you’re looking to learn about how to be a better ally and accomplice for people of color on the road, or if you’re simply looking to hear a perspective you might not have before from a female road traveler, this episode is an especially great listen!

It won’t take long for you to realize that Jessy Muller likes to do things on her own terms. That’s why, when she was ready to adopt a more mobile lifestyle in October of 2017, she found a vintage 1978 Commander motorhome and moved her and her two cats right in, which kicked off not only an adventure on the road, but also an adventure in learning how to work on the 24-foot-long camper she just purchased.
Since moving into her RV, Jessy has been a growing voice for taking charge of your own direction, especially when having an older vehicle means that sometimes things break down and in order to get yourself back out there, you have to learn to do things yourself.

Van life: what started as a trend has only grown, evolving into a full-fledged movement in the US and beyond. And despite the multitude of vacation-style photos online showcasing this mobile living arrangement, there are many practical reasons people choose to live on the road for more than a couple weeks-- and no, it typically has nothing to do with Instagram.
While the roots of living in your vehicle are several decades old-- it’s not a novel concept whatsoever-- there are more tools now than ever to make it accessible, and because of the economic outlook many Millennials are facing, the hashtag-turned-movement is also becoming a viable option to address affordable housing and creating a promising financial outlook. That said, as you’ll hear on this episode, it’s not so easy to go against the social grain and there are true challenges associated with not having a stable mailing address, crossing state lines regularly, and dealing with local community policies around vehicle habitation.
To join this in-depth conversation, two incredible female travelers are giving their insights-- Bre Acio and Lacey Mayer, a couple who go by @theladiesvan on Instagram. Bre and Lacey are not only incredibly passionate about finding ways to make vanlife and long term vehicle habitation more socially acceptable, but own two businesses that do their part to make it more accessible to those who want to get on the road.

In this 2nd annual “Advice” episode, we ask our 9 most recent interviewees the 5 most commonly-asked questions we’ve been hearing online and in person from female road travelers.
Because anything can-- and often does-- happen on the road, more perspectives usually help so that you can learn, reflect, and ultimately decide for yourself what feels right. And when we as female travelers share advice with one another, it does some important things: it normalizes that we are competent and can be sources of knowledge, and it also shows each other that there is no one way to do road travel. You can have a different perspective and still make it happen.

Full-time travelers Jayme and her partner John recently went through a miscarriage. In this episode, we catch up with Jayme to hold an important discussion around miscarriage-- because getting real about what’s not being said is the only way to move toward a future where we all give ourselves permission to do the same.

When you’re on the go, it can feel freeing to not have roots. You’re here, then you’re there. But the reality is that all of us who travel, for any length of time, create an impact on the communities we travel to and through, which can be tough to remember that because it feels like sleeping in a public parking lot for 7 hours doesn’t leave a lot of room to give back to the people who live down the street. Or does it?
Katie Boué, part-time road traveler and full-time public lands advocate, has a lot to say about the give and take we engage in as travelers: both in the outdoors as well as in local communities. Because the reality is that no matter how often we relocate, we leave an impact wherever we go, and that acknowledgement in itself holds power.

Call it what you want: an escape, a road trip, a vacation, a getaway. Travel is, literally, a common vehicle for those looking to disconnect, reflect, and recover.
But that’s the version of recovery and travel that’s tied up neatly with a bow. The reality is that, in the face of grief, trauma-- or in Lindsey Hall’s case: an eating disorder-- there is usually a lot of healing that needs to happen first before travel is even an option.
While the road to recovery can sometimes be found on an actual road, it’s a fairly romantic notion that it’s that simple. There’s usually a lot of work that needs to happen first. But that’s the thing about travel: it can be a big motivator.

What happens with the road trip ends? If the road calls out to you, it-- or something similar-- probably always will. But it can be difficult to talk about what makes us step away from travel for a while, which is why we enlisted the help of all you listeners out there to share your thoughts and stories. Because just like there are so many things that get us to say “yes” to a road trip, there’s also a wide range of reasons we say “yes” to staying put for a bit.

Kate Ortiz is making all the right moves-- mostly because she’s turned her last two cross-country moves into epic multi-state road trips.
Not sure about you, but it sounds stressful to live on the road and move simultaneously. Where do you put all your things? Like, really? Do you take a trailer? What about when you get to where you’re going? Do you already have a job lined up? What about the costs associated with moving? Doesn’t that make it harder to actually make the most of your travels?
Kate answers all of these questions, plus so much more, live from host Laura’s driveway. She shares her account of making the most of her moves with her husband Enrique and two cats and demonstrates that it doesn’t take much to turn any travel opportunity into an unforgettable adventure.

Photographer Alison Turner and mixed media artist Amanda Sandlin share about their creative practices on the road. This week, we're sharing an early episode of our sister podcast, "She Explores." Find it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
Alison Turner has lived in and out of a van for the past 8 years, and traveled in a teardrop trailer and tent before that. She picked up photography 10 years ago and has been pursuing it since. We learn that there are many reasons Alison loves to escape in her van with her rescue dog Max. Since recording, she now has two adventure dogs.
Amanda was relatively new to her life in her built-out minivan. She'd been on the road three months and was learning how to maintain her creative practice on the move. She found that it wasn't easy, but she enjoyed pushing herself and meeting new people. Amanda still works as an artist and is located near Denver, CO.

Personally, breaking the rules gives us the sweats. But after hearing from solo road traveler Lisa Jacobs, we might be convinced that there’s a time and a place for it: whether it’s personally, professionally, creatively, or romantically.
As you’ll hear, Lisa has been doing solo road travel for a couple of years now. As a former lawyer-turned- traveling content creator, Lisa knows what it’s like to defy the norm. And with pink hair and a large van she’s been traveling in, she already stands out from the crowd. But what I’ve loved about getting to know Lisa is that she’s not just about breaking the rules for the sake of rebellion or power or chaos. She’s in it to learn about herself.
About Lisa:
Lisa Jacobs is a lawyer, interior designer, and writer who lives and travels full-time in her van Freebird. Lisa hosts vanlife events and creativity workshops across the country. She shares honest, practical solo vanlife advice on her Vacay Vans youtube channel.

Boundaries don’t usually sound like fun (unless you get a thrill from breaking rules, in which case more power to you). But for the majority of us, especially those with a desire to travel, boundaries can kind of sound like a drag. Which is why when Dani Reyes-Acosta, a long-time road traveler and remote brand strategist, shares how learning to set boundaries for herself has actually been a key factor in her continued growth and even aided in her repeated decisions to say yes to travel-- well, we were pretty much hooked.
From what she learned driving a sedan around Mexico, to why she travels solo even though she has a partner, Dani’s stories show the liberating side of creating boundaries.
About Dani:
Dani Reyes-Acosta is a brand strategist, creative consultant, and everyday adventurer with a serious penchant for fresh foods (but an equally serious pizza problem).
Calling 6 countries and 6 western US states "home" since graduating from corporate life in 2014, she chases snow, rock, and surf adventure as a means to drive her personal and spiritual growth, finding origin, identity, and community in wild spaces.
As a digital nomad and founder of the Nomad Creativa brand strategy collective, she helps brands evolve to and public workshops that support a healthy future for public lands, public health, and community well-being.
While Nomad Creativa is her channel for professional creativity, her project, Not Lost, Just Discovering, provides an outlet for stories of heritage, adventure, and the journey within.

Kieren Britton, solo camper traveler and founder of The Lady Alliance, and our host Laura Borichevsky have some common threads running through their lives at this moment, and it all centers around focusing our energy on the things they want, as opposed to moving away from what they don’t. And this conversation seemed like the perfect way to put a bow on 2018... because be it travel plans, business goals, or some well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions-- keeping an eye on what motivates us to move forward is always going to outshine the challenges or unpleasantries that got us moving in the first place.

Nicole Rothschild is not your ordinary van traveler for many reasons, but most notably because she recently re-learned to drive a car. In fact less than a year ago, Nicole was battling chronic illness and couldn’t get around without a wheelchair-- which means that these past few months have not only been ones but incredible challenge, but also incredible growth.

As a nurse, Rachel has studied and practiced the art of giving care for quite a while. But it wasn’t until she moved into a van that she started to appreciate what it takes to receive it from others.
No matter how, how often, where you go, or who you travel with, there is a certain sense of self-reliance that everyone who hits the road or lives in a camper needs to take on in order to be successful. But as you’ll hear in this episode, there’s also a great power in learning to accept care from others-- be it directly or indirectly, ongoing or in one passing moment-- because being on the road, or supporting those who are, also means being a part of a community. And our strength is in how we care for one another.

While reducing your carbon footprint is certainly important, the way we relate to one another is something else that environmentalist and road traveler Noami Grevemberg sees room for positive change in.
Noami is originally from Trinidad, lived in New Orleans for a time with her husband, Dustin, and now the two travel in a VW van as well as abroad, focusing on experimenting with different eco travel practices along the way. As you’ll hear on this episode, Noami is passionate about sustainable living, and has been dedicating her life to helping to make eco-friendly habits and choices more accessible to everyone-- whether you’re on the road or living a more stationary lifestyle.
While it would be easy to focus solely on the environmentally-conscious aspect of Noami does, there’s a lot more to her work than that. And she might not say it this way herself, but in interviewing her for this episode, it’s clear that starting conversations that aren’t being had, and truly listening to everyone involved is a large part of what Noami does to better this earth. Sometimes it’s related to sustainability practices-- and you’ll hear in this episode that sometimes it’s not. But there are so many ways to model positive change in this world. And while cutting down on single use plastic or turning off the faucet to brush your teeth are certainly important, the way we relate to one another is something else Noami sees room for positive change in.

River surfing, a niche but growing sport, has taken Brittany Parker from one river to another since 2011, from successful competitions in Colorado, to completing a first descent of the Zambezi River in Africa by stand up paddleboard, to co-founding an instructional river surfing business called RVR 2 RVR. This year, things started off really promising for Brittany-- but then it all changed.
For Brittany, this past season has been one full of trauma, change, transition, growth, and-- as you’ll hear time and again in this episode-- letting go. Because when we go through big changes-- and especially when they’re unplanned-- the key to moving forward is all in how well we can let go of the expectations that were, to make room for what comes next.

As you can imagine, everything changed for Lauren with Trent’s passing, but one thing she’s kept as a constant is a van that belonged to Trent. Every so often, we hit a wall and need to reset. Things feel stagnant, or too routine, or not in alignment with our values any longer. Maybe we stayed still too long, or maybe we got off track. But resets just need to happen sometimes. And Lianna Lee knew she needed one this summer, which is why she quit her job, changed her apartment, and hit the road for a month all at the same time. Without a back-up plan or a financial safety net. Some might call is scary. Others might call it irresponsible. But for Lianna-- and probably for you at some point, too-- it was completely necessary.

Sometimes, when we travel, it’s to go back home. And Chantal Wadsworth is traveling back to explore her home in a big way, because she grew up on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico. As you’ll hear in this episode, the outdoors hold a special place for Native people, for the Navajo, and for Chantal personally, which is why she and her partner secured remote work, bought a Ford Transit van, converted it into a simple home on wheels, and are currently traveling around the Navajo Nation and 4 Corners area to reconnect with her roots-- the land she loves so much and grew up around, as well as her family who lives in that region.
What we find particularly beautiful about Chantal’s story is not just how much she wants to accept from this experience, but how much she wants to give back-- to the land and her community.
About Chantal:
Chantal Wadsworth is a Navajo woman on the road, traveling the Navajo Nation and Four Corners area, along with her partner and two dogs. On a journey to learn, connect, heal and protect indigenous lands. Follow us as we reconnect to these sacred places.

Karen Ramos has been making a pretty big impact in the outdoor community this year through the conversations she’s been starting in the realm of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in outdoor spaces. And most recently, she went on a road trip that spawned #fakevanlife.
You might wonder how diversity, equity, and inclusion connects to road travel. Your mind might also jump to a very natural, comforting thought-- that you feel like the community you see and hear about out on the road is incredibly inclusive and supportive. But I also want you to think about every time you search online or meet other road travelers-- do you find a lot of diversity among those who are out there? Do you feel like what you see, or perhaps what you have, is truly accessible to others? We talk a lot on this podcast about how anyone can live or travel on the road-- but we rarely address the inherent privilege in the very statement itself.
Tune in for a fresh perspective on road travel told by someone who uses her voice to open up conversations where outdoors, travel, and DEI intersect.

Getting a dog is a big decision, and so is bringing one on the road with you. So we asked professional dog trainer and part-time road traveler Laura DeMaio Roy all of the questions we could think of to help you feel more prepared.
There are a lot of considerations to make when owning a dog, regardless of where you live. But when you travel regularly, there are even more questions to answer before making decisions.
We’ve known for a while that this episode needed to happen. Why? It’s partially because so many of you have dogs already. We see the photos posted in our Women On The Road Podcast Facebook group, and a lot of them have a four legged creature in the background, curled up on the bed or sitting excitedly in front of your parked rig. It’s also partially because the question “should I get a dog before hitting the road?” comes up often in this tight knit little community.
Either way, getting a dog is a big decision, and so is bringing one on the road with you. But fortunately, as we’ve found time and again with this community-- we know just the person to help with tips, answers, and insights when it comes to choosing, training, and traveling with dogs.

Martha Hudson lives solo in a bus, and her mission is more self love through creating custom bikinis for bodies of every size.
Self love and body positivity are a continual journey for us all, whether you travel on the road or not. And while it’s important to talk about, for many of us it can be challenging, painful, or even plain taboo. For solo traveler Martha Hudson, creating custom bikinis out of her converted school bus became one way to host this conversation and show the world that bodies of all types deserve to have swimwear they feel comfortable and confident in.
From the importance of letting go, to how Martha views her own self love practice, tune in to feel a little more confident in your skin.
About Martha:
Martha Hudson is a self-described one woman circus... if the circus involved no circus tricks but was a really a girl making bikinis in a shortie school bus while living in said school bus. She wants to be a “kitschy roadside attraction” when she grows up, and at 29 she’s well on her way. She spent her childhood in Northern California, where she developed her lifelong passion for collecting secret swimming holes, waterfalls, hot springs and rock jumping spots... a passion she has managed to turn into a full-time lifestyle and career. She loves any adventure to and in any body of water, but as a plus-sized woman, struggled to find swimwear that could keep up. So now she makes it herself and encourages every size, shape and gender to get out on the road, or the trails or in the water.. or whatever it is you do to really, truly play.

It takes a special kind of friendship to road trip together. So when we heard that Macy Pate and Emily Breedlove were taking a 6-month BFF road trip post-college, we wanted to hear their stories. From tips on finding free camping to insights on what this trip together has meant, you might be tempted to call up a friend and plan your next road trip after tuning in.
Featuring Macy Pate and Emily Breedlove
Hosted by Laura Borichevsky
Sponsored by Escape Campervans
About Emily:
Emily graduated last May with BFA in fashion design, so she’s a seamstress and designer by education. She wants to start a program that teaches industrial sewing and manufacturing skills to the underprivileged. Emily loves learning anything and everything about the world and she thinks traveling is the best way to do that. She’s also passionate about coffee, ice cream, and Post Malone, in no particular order.
About Macy:
Macy graduated this past December with a psychology degree from Harding University, with the ultimate goal of being a caseworker for displaced families/refugees. She’s a photographer and has been shooting engagements/weddings/seniors/anything professionally for a few years now. Traveling is her #1 fave thing to do. Seeing the world and learning new perspectives is, in her opinion, the best way to combat ignorance. Macy also loves movies, donuts, and dancing (badly).

There’s a common misconception that living on the road equates to having a healthy lifestyle. The reality is that it can be just as challenging to meet personal health and wellness goals while traveling-- with the added chaos of keeping a constant travel schedule. But for Jayme Serbell, moving into a camper and hitting the road opened her mind up to the possibility that she could take action to create healthier habits, one small step at a time.
And after a year of traveling, her commitment to those small but daily efforts tell quite the story.
About Jayme:
Jayme Serbell is the founder of Gnomad Home, an online resource for camper travelers. She travels around with her dogs and husband John in a 1996 Chevy Express High Top Conversion Van that they built out with their own two hands! As soon as they hit the road, Jayme began the very first steps to reclaiming her life and discovering who she truly is. For her, the van and all the discomforts that come with living on the road gave her a freedom not just of beautiful sceneries and a life of flexibility - it gave her the freedom to be real with herself, and create the happy and honest life she wants for herself internally.

Nobody ever said that solo travel was easy. But someone like Laura Austin would probably say that it’s worth it.
Laura uses solo travel as a way of refreshing her mind when things feel stale at home, but you’d be wrong if you think she looks at these trips as vacations. Flat tires, loneliness, and uncertainty are all a part of traveling alone, and Laura is no stranger to any of them. But instead of seeing these challenges as obstacles to avoid, we spend this episode hearing from her on how these bumps along the way have been catalysts for her personal growth, even after the trip is over.
About Laura:
With wanderlust running through her veins, photographer Laura Austin is someone you can’t help but watch. After growing up in small mountain towns in Colorado and Vermont, she is currently based in Los Angeles. The contrast of her roots in nature and the urban environment where she lives now forces Laura to constantly escape the city and explore. Meshing her previous professions as a graphic designer and journalist, Laura’s skill is visual storytelling. She makes the simple fantastical and the fantastical feasible, roaming to all ends of the earth and bringing it back to us every time in hopes of getting you out to experience the world for yourself... or at least make you feel you were along for the ride just by looking at her images.

Two travelers. Six weeks. Thousands of miles. Almost no cell signal.
When Nicole Brown, founder of Women Who Hike, and professional photographer and writer Elisabeth Brentano, joined forces for an epic caravan through the Southwest, it was in the name of learning more about public lands as the locals know them-- including how to better protect them.
From their perspective on how to make the most of your time when visiting new parks and monuments, to how social media helps and hurts the places we love recreating on and how we can all do better when it comes to conserving these special outdoor spaces, Nicole and Elisabeth might make you want to take your own trip to the Southwest, and maybe even leave your phone at home.
About Nicole:
Nicole Brown is an avid hiker and the founder of the worldwide community organization, Women Who Hike. Nicole is an advocate for public lands, conservation and using our wild spaces and trails responsibly. Nicole uses the trail as a means of empowerment and healing amidst having been diagnosed with SLE, systemic erythematosus. Today she is fighting to be in remission all the while summiting mountains and also sharing the stories of other empowered women through @WomenWhoHike social channels and organizing group hikes all over the world for other women hikers.

That’s why we wanted to seek advice and insights from Megan Cable, who travels full-time in her campervan and has a background in Finance, to help shine a light on how to keep an eye on your budget as the miles tick by. In addition to her firsthand experience, Megan also collected survey data on expenses from other road travelers, so tune in to hear thoughtful tips and inspiration for your own road trip spending plan.
In case you missed it, check out Episode 23 for part 1 of the series!
About Megan:
Since September 2017, Megan has lived, worked and travel full time on the road with her partner from our converted Sprinter van, Vanna White. She was born and raised in the mountains of central California before testing out city life in San Francisco for the last 8 years leading into life on the road. She was drawn to this lifestyle by a desire to explore the corners of our country that she never knew existed, discover a place that feels like ‘home', and find opportunities for self growth in the process. She likes to think she creates a bridge between the rigid logic of numbers and the free spirit of creativity as both are something that inspire, fulfill and drive her.

We all know that money is a common (and sometimes large) barrier to travel. That’s why we decided to talk to women about their experiences managing money to create their on-the-road lifestyles. After all, hearing their stories helps us feel more empowered about making financial choices in our own lives.
In part 1 of this 2-part series, we hear from Kara Perez: founder of a financial literacy company called Bravely, and big time road trip enthusiast. Before she founded Bravely, Kara found herself in a tight financial spot-- debt and jobs that had her living paycheck to paycheck, no travel on the horizon-- and it inspired her to make some changes that have completely transformed the way she sees both money and travel.
Tune in to hear Kara’s practical tips, insightful experiences, and just the right amount of encouragement to take a closer look at your finances so you can travel on your own terms.
About Kara:
Kara Perez is a freelance writer and the founder of Bravely, a pop up financial literacy event company. She is passionate about helping women become financially confident, travel, and peanut butter. Find her in Austin, TX or somewhere on the road.

You can find home in the most unexpected places. And if you're Shruthi Lapp, you find it in South America.
When Shruthi took off over two years ago in a camper with her husband, Peter, she wasn't expecting to end up in Baja, Mexico, wishing she could keep driving further south. She also wasn't expecting to take her camper to Miami, put it in a shipping container and-- knowing little Spanish-- meet it down in Colombia. But when you feel at home somewhere, you take your rolling home and your sense of adventure straight there.
From practical tips on traveling to and through South America, to charming anecdotes of her time on the road thus far, this episode will take you on a joy ride through some places we have yet to cover on this series.
About Shruthi:
Probably searching for her next falafel. Llama/Alpaca enthusiast. Currently exploring the South American continent in a 1987 Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon GL with a camera in-hand at all times.

How do you overcome challenges to getting on the road?
We wanted to know. Because when it comes to road travel, there’s always a reason not to go, even if you want to. It could be chores, money, a job or other obligations-- even things that seem intrinsically good for us, like new opportunities or a relationship or an incredible home. And these things-- good, bad, or otherwise, can make it challenging to say “yes” to the call you feel to get out on the road.
We asked listeners to share their experiences of overcoming challenges and getting out there anyway, and you all came through, big time. So in this episode, you’ll hear stories of persistence, creativity, vulnerability, and strength. And even though everyone’s travels are incredibly unique, there’s a strong commonality in the art of the pursuit.

Dani Bradford, a worldwide solo adventurer and writer, left Washington, D.C. by motorcycle on April 29th 2017. Her plan was to head south through North America, Central America, and South America, ending her trip in Patagonia at Fitz Roy. But an accident she was involved in changed her course in more ways than one.
Dani wrote a piece about the entire incident titled “In Which I am Hit by a Truck”, and it was so powerful that we asked her to read it for us on this episode. While it’s normal to fear the worst while traveling, especially solo, Dani’s story is a good reminder that trauma always leaves room for humanity, resilience, and self-discovery.
About Dani:
Dani Bradford is a dirtbag solo adventurer and digital storyteller who has traveled extensively across the globe. In 2015, Dani completed a 4,500 mile+ cycling journey through 15 countries from Portugal to the Republic of Georgia. She is currently
traveling south down the Americas by motorcycle, documenting her adventures on LoneRucksack.com.

Being on the road allows freedom and the feeling of being untethered, but it can also bring with it disconnection to the communities you move through and among. When Liz and Rachel, a couple with backgrounds in non-profit work and do-good spirits, left North Carolina in a 2006 Dodge Sprinter van earlier this year, it was with the intention to find ways to contribute to communities they experienced along the way.
Because leaving things better than you found them is the best way to feel a connection to the place you’re in.
If you’ve ever felt alone while traveling, if you’re interested to know what it’s like when you make a temporary community our own, or if you want to learn how to stay safe while engaging in unknown communities, this episode is for you.

What happens when you practice understanding with the things you understand the least?
We won’t promise you’ll end up living desert back roads in a giant orange camper like Brianna Madia, but we bet you’ll build a life you never expected.
The secret? Brianna takes the time to see potential where others might change course.
Some people might see her old campervan, Bertha, and think that it’s not worth the trouble-- that the potential for breakdowns make it too risky to live in. Some people might see her incredibly active dog, Dagwood, and think that he’s too wild to give a home to. Some people might think that the desert back roads aren’t the safest place to call home at all.
But unlike most people, Brianna fell in love with all of the above, and in taking the time to truly understand and appreciate them for what and who they are, she’s cultivated a unique life that reflects the very creatures she loves so much.
From her life outdoors, to the dogs she loves, to the breakdowns and online criticism she faces-- this episode is full of Brianna Madia’s beautiful stories of adventure and understanding.
About Brianna:
Brianna Madia is a storyteller and big orange van-dweller, spending most of her time in the deserts of southern Utah. When she's not writing lengthy Instagram captions, she can be found rock climbing, backpacking, mountain biking, kayaking, and canyoneering - always with her husband and two dogs in tow.

As an adventure wedding photographer, Abbi Hearne eats, sleeps, and breathes destinations. It’s not just a part of her livelihood-- it’s a passion of hers to find these special places. In focusing on these destinations for the past couple years Abbi’s built up a successful photography business, traveling in their campervan to cover some of the most stunning locations in the western US with couples wanting to take a less traditional approach to getting married or celebrating their love. Abbi’s wielded a camera in almost every scenario-- from hiking on mountain tops to suspended 400 feet in the air for wedding held over a canyon in Utah that went viral late last year. From business tips to the challenges she’s overcome in building her dream business, Abbi’s stories and advice bring both reality and heart to what it’s like being a destination-focused, passion-driven traveling female entrepreneur.
About Abbi:
Abbi Hearne is an adventure wedding photographer living on the road full-time with her husband Callen and their dog, Charlie. Together, they run The Hearnes Adventure Photography, specializing in intimate weddings and elopements all over the western US. When they’re not hiking into the wilderness with a bride and groom, you can probably find them skydiving, climbing, soaking in a hot spring, or car-hiking random dirt roads. They consider Moab, Utah and Yosemite National Park home, but can be found pretty much fun where west of the continental divide unless they’re adventuring somewhere remote around the world.

Kit Whistler is probably the sweetest rebel you’ll ever meet.
When she first hit the road in 2010, it was in response to the physical stagnation she felt as a college student-- which resulted in a year of farmwork and backpacking around the States, and led her to discover parts of herself, and the land around her, she is now deeply connected to.
Later on, when traditional “adult life” off the road didn’t work, she hit the road again in 2012, this time with the expressed ambition to do nothing. To practice being idle. And in creating that space, Kit began the inner work many of us are afraid to do-- confront our fears and move forward in growth, learning that optimism is the most rebellious act we can take on as humans and finding ways to share that in any way she could. Her journey as a writer, a philosopher, and an optimist are all wrapped up in her travels on the road, and in this episode she shares pieces of her internal and external experiences.

So when five women departed for Marfa, Texas from various parts of the States, we sent out a couple of field recorders and asked these creatively-driven women to record their experiences along the way. Because between Point A and Point B-- detached from our standard routine, a lot of transformative and beautiful moments can take place.

Ramie Liddle has lived on the road on and off since her mid-twenties, but never did she have an adventure like her 14-month journey with Miss Norma, her 90-year-old mother-in-law. In 2015, Norma was diagnosed with terminal cancer two days after her husband passed away. Along with her husband Tim and their poodle Ringo, Ramie helped Miss Norma to live out her remaining year of life on the road instead of a doctor’s office.

Bionca Smith was living a comfortable life that most people would define as successful-- a business where she created her own schedule and could work from home, a comfortable place to live, a new car, and a 9-year-old son she adores. But in her success, she still felt boxed in-- by her environment, by debt, and by the constraints of a more traditional lifestyle. So she did something about it. She gave herself 30 days to move out of her apartment with her son with one goal in mind: travel the world together. In under a year, this vision has led them to several continents and now into a vintage Ford conversion van as they travel the States. In her zeal for a more spontaneous, connected life with her son, Bionca let go of many things-- but what she gained in return is her own definition of success.

It's a common assumption that living in a camper is better for the environment-- but is it really? Minimizing water consumption and running on solar power are great steps to take toward living green, but the continuous use of fuel and not always having access to compost or recycling while traveling can make it difficult to know if life on the road is actually helping the earth. Caroline Winslow, a college student and environmentalist, had many of the same questions when she moved into a van for the start of her senior year. Her knowledge on the cross-sector of camper living and environmentalism didn't result in a single, obvious answer to our question, but that's for good reason. She did, however, give us a lot to think about when it comes to our own consumption while traveling, including tips and ideas for reducing our individual footprints.

Johnie Gall is someone whose career has blossomed through her commitment to saying “yes” when travel and flexibility were on the table. It’s fun to travel with a kitted out camper van, but what if you don’t have one? According to Emily Pelland, if you want to go-- you just try.
Emily travels with her boyfriend in a 4-door sedan, tent camping most night of the week and hiking every trail possible along the way. It’s not exactly a comfortable life, but Emily’s desire for her long-term road travel is driven by passion, not by comfort. So 13,000 miles into her trip in the middle of the Mojave Desert, Laura and Emily sit down to hear more of what got her into her car and how she makes it work now that she’s out here.

Morgan Brown currently lives in a vintage VW van, and she has a lot to say about death, dying, and loss. At the age of 22, her mom was killed in a car accident, and since then she’s been looking for ways to give people permission to share their hard stories. Because everyone has them. And because they matter.
These stories matter so much that Morgan carries a collapsible phone booth atop her van, the centerpiece for a project she started aptly titled “Conversations I Wish I Had”, driving it to communities looking to share stories of loss to demonstrate the innate need we all have to tell our hard stories, be it to another face or a phone receiver.
Laura met with Morgan in Santa Cruz, California to hear her perspective, experience the phone booth firsthand, and join a Conversations I Wish I Had pop-up event to see what others do when given the opportunity to share their tough stories with someone who wants to listen.

Real talk: falls of any kind are scary. We lose control. We might face injury. We find pain in getting up again. When full-time solo van traveler Mikaela Hamilton took a 15-foot fall while rock climbing, she found an inner strength to rise, recover, and wind up stronger for it in the end. She also found that every challenge we face in life can be overcome through a series of small steps, and it inspired her to get outside her comfort zone in ways she’d never thought of before, both on and off the road. In short-- this episode has motivation and insight written all over it.

Whether it’s your vehicle, where you take it, or who’s in it-- being on the road sometimes means finding the right fit. And it’s not always so straightforward (in fact sometimes it’s downright messy). Sometimes looking for the right fit is an uncomfortable process and creates times of transition from one thing to the next, and when you live among an ever-changing landscape on top of that it’s important to have something consistent to lean on. Fortunately, Kathleen Morton of Tiny House Tiny Footprint knows all about the way community can play a crucial role of support, friendship, stability, and joy in this mobile lifestyle, especially during times of change.
Also in this episode: what happens at a Vanlife Gathering, why the Pacific Northwest is a great place for camper life, and a short list of things Kathleen loves about vintage vehicles.

There’s a lot to traveling on the road with a romantic partner that is hard to explain with a social media post-- things like navigating tight living quarters, the special type of intimacy that comes with keeping a similar sleep schedule and buying all of the same groceries, and the behavioral change that happens when you know that there’s nowhere to retreat in the heat of a disagreement. It’s for this reason that Laura spends this episode bringing us all a little closer to some of the realities of traveling with a significant other by taking a peek into the lives of three different couples living on the road through the females within them: Katie Larsen, Juliana Linder, and Marisa and Vanessa Roaman. Tune in for stories on what to do if your partner is an early bird, how getting space from your partner is really a form of intimacy in itself, and that couples who clean together, stay together.

Whether it's an RV, van, trailer, bus, truck, or something else entirely, everyone who takes on the unique challenge of turning a vehicle into a home on wheels has their own journey. Creating a camper is a custom experience for each woman traveler so in this episode, nearly a dozen women share their build-out experiences, and amid the triumphs and trials we listen closely to hear the relationships behind each story that make these visions of travel into realities.
In addition to voice submissions from travelers Sabrina Oesterle, Leah Yanoff, Emily Hart, Alyssa Hitchcock, Julia Bonney, Sarah Ernst, and Amoris Walker, photographer and former full-time woman on the road Kris Holbrook joins host Laura Borichevsky for an interview to share her perspective and explain why the experience of converting her van was better done solo. Near the end of the episode, we hear from a special family whose young daughters, Paige and Quinn, designed the entire interior of the adventure van they will be spending weekends in with their dad, Sean, starting this fall.
To those wondering if it’s possible to make your vehicle into a home-- this one’s for you.

Roads are full of twists and turns. So is the life you live on it. What happens when you come up against the inevitable challenges of living from one place to the next? And how do you come out better for it?
Alex Ulmke of A Girl And Her Van knows all about the ups and downs of life on the road. When we first met Alex one year ago, she was feeling lonely and disconnected on the road. But because of her resilient nature she’s learned a lot about breaking through challenges to the other side. Laura asks Alex about her triumphs and challenges thus far and hears about where her travels have taken her in the past year.
Also covered in this episode: why Haines is a magical place, how to amp up your camping meals, and what item is the most-missed home luxury on the road.

What if living on the road full time doesn't work for your lifestyle? What if you love your day job? Laura talks with Noël Russell about striking the right balance for home in Oakland and away in her Sprinter Van.
Two months into her trip, our host Laura Borichevsky reflects on what living part-time in her van was like while she worked full-time in the Pacific Northwest. Learning to balance a full-time career and the outdoors wasn’t always the easiest, but it’s one a lot of adventurers out there seem to navigate.
Noël Russell is the perfect person to talk to about striking the right balance in work and travel. Monday through Friday she supports homeless youth services in San Francisco, and every weekend seems to be jam-packed with exploring in her Sprinter van with her husband and two dogs. For her, it’s all integrated.
Noël’s passion and thoughtful take on life is inspiring and rooted in her values, ultimately showing weekend warriors, camper lovers, and wanderlusters alike that integrating work and travel is something you can thrive in.

Host Laura Borichevsky shares her backstory - which includes a bit of trepidation about setting off on the road in her Ford Transit van full time. So she turns to some current and former travelers to get their advice for life on 4 wheels. Laura asks the question:
What do you wish you knew before hitting the road?
Since Laura doesn't have a time machine, talking with Laura Patton of Mobile Roamers and Gale Straub (host & founder of She Explores) is the next best thing. We also get to hear voice submissions answering the question from women who've lived the lifestyle first hand: Juliana Linder of @homesweetvan, Alexandra Ulmke of @agirlandhervan, Emily King of @wheresmyofficenow, Morgan Brown, Emelia Wint, and Ariel Ferree of We the Wildflowers.
If you're curious about making the leap to full time travel, love taking long road trips on the weekends, or just want to meet some adventurous women - this episode is for you.
