We love it when New Music Friday becomes New Music Tuesday and today is absolutely one of those days. Mindchatter’s serenity-inducing single “Said & Done,” Amber Mark’s torrid track “Sink In,” and “Magnetic,” the first solo work from TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe.
Let the sweet croon of British soul singer Elmiene envelop you as you press play on this edition of MBE. “TLC,” from the artist’s third EP Anyway I Can is just the balm you need… whether you’re recovering from a stacked Halloweekend or otherwise. The last time we caught up with Nilüfer Yanya was just about two years ago. Oct. 6, 2022 to be exact. She was here for a Guest DJ set . That was the same year that Yanya released her sophomore album PAINLESS, cementing her as one of the UK’s most interesting and thoughtful songwriters — lauded by critics worldwide for crafting a signature sound that’s equal parts ethereal and grungy.

Amidst last Friday’s heavy-hitting new LPs like The Blessed Madonna’s Godspeed and LP Giobbi’s Dotr, was more of a hidden gem — Samora Pinderhughes’ Venus Smiles Not in the House of Tears. Pinderhughes is a subtle master of jazz composition and a lyrical powerhouse as you’ll hear on the album track “Inertia,” played as part of this edition of MBE. In the midst of an action - packed week with more excitement ahead tomorrow (👀), we invite you to slow down a bit with Icelandic duo Padda. The pair are lifelong friends and survivors of Reykjavik’s early ‘80s post-punk scene. A recently released debut EP — Fluid Time — finds them fascinated by the perception of time and space. Their compositions fill the ether with inspiration from free-form jazz and the punk aesthetics of their youth. Sample these far out sounds via the EP stand out “Bug,” which you’ll hear as part of this edition of MBE. In honor of KCRW’s Fall 2024 Pledge Drive, we dig into some of our favorite “city” songs.
Multi-faceted musician, actor, and lowkey fashion icon Moses Sumney arrived on the scene roughly a decade ago as an artist fully formed. Since then, his experimental R&B, jazz, folk, and sophisti-pop sensibilities have deepened and expanded as he’s delivered critically acclaimed album upon critically acclaimed album — including 2017’s Aromanticism and 2020’s Grae. He’s collaborated with James Blake, Little Dragon, and indie rockers Son Lux to name just a few. He’s also moved further into the world of film and television, making his screen debut with the buzzy HBO series The Idol — in addition to contributing several songs to the soundtrack. This follows a song in collaboration with Son Lux for the 2022 Oscar Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once. Plus, there’s a good chance you caught him on the big screen this year in a key role in the A24 thriller MaXXXine.
On the heels of his new EP Sophcore, and ahead of a sold out show at Lodge Room (Presented by KCRW) — critically acclaimed experimental R&B artist Moses Sumney hits HQ with a savory set of guest DJ selects. From mid-70s Ghanaian highlife sounds, to a 2024 cut from UK indie-idiosynchronizers Adult Jazz, Sumney brings the heat and keeps it eclectic. You’ll hear this opening album track just past the midway point of the show. Fitting for an artist as intriguingly off-center as Okay Kaya is. Plus, the latest from Bryan Ferry, Photay, and LA’s own “Afro-futurist space cowboy,” Tolliver.
History of House has been an absolute dream for those of us at KCRW to encounter. It was conceived by Australian producer Groove Terminator and fully realized in collaboration with Grammy winning producer, composer, and mixer — Latroit. The pair further collaborated with the multi-Grammy winning Soweto Gospel Choir to create an album of house music masterpieces, sung in Zulu. In the words of KCRW Music Director Anne Litt, the project is: “full of joy and positivity. You will know these songs. You will recognize their power and you will be transported.”

If you lived through the great Drive OST takeover of 2011, you probably didn’t need to Shazam Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” when he joined his fellow Frenchmen Phoenix to perform the track during the Paris Olympic closing ceremony… But a lot of other people did! So many that it broke the record for most Shazamed song in a single day. So (obviously) “Nightcall” is on deck for ya when you cue up this MBE. Did you know that Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin (aka legendary French sophisti-pop duo Air) have teamed up to make new music together for the first time since 2014? Dunckel co-wrote “Summer Song” with child-actor-turned-pop-singer Remy Bond and then invited his longtime collaborator into the fold to make it a cool summer bop that sounds very Air-y indeed. Hear it now as part of this MBE. Plus, “Love’s Refrain,” Moses Sumney’s latest single ahead of new EP Sophcore and a classic from Tommy James & the Shondells.

John Legend needs no introduction, but we’re going to give him one anyway. The Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Oscar (aka EGOT) winner arrives at KCRW HQ fresh from attending the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony in Paris. He’s back stateside for two evenings at one of LA’s coziest amphitheaters — The Greek. Beginning on Friday Aug. 2 with an encore on Saturday, Aug. 3 , the show promises to be an intimate affair featuring just John, his piano, and a whole host of stories from his illustrious career. His many decades as a performer will be well represented, but don’t be surprised to hear an extra cut or two from 2004 debut Get Lifted which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in December of this year. And speaking of throwing it back, check out this piece written in 1994 by a 15-year-old Legend (neé Stephens), more or less predicting his entire career arc as the winner of the “McDonald’s Black History Makers of Tomorrow’’ essay competition.

Within the span of a half hour set of music within today’s MBE, you’ll hear several Four Tops classics to honor the life of recently passed founding group member Abdul "Duke" Fakir — including the melodramatic, stomper-ballad hybrid “Bernadette” … And you’ll also hear the slow burning “want” from LA-based, R&B futurist Dua Saleh’s hyper anticipated debut LP, I SHOULD CALL THEM (due Oct. 11 via Ghostly International). This is the type of range you’re promised when tuning into a show called Morning Becomes Eclectic and it’s what we aim to deliver every weekday morning from 9 a.m. to noon PT.
There’s nothing like hearing a musical collab from a couple of artists at the top of their respective games to put a little extra spring in your step. So of course you’ll want to jump right into today’s MBE for our early spin of Karen O + Danger Mouse’s “Super Breath” — the dynamic duo’s first new music together since the release of their Grammy nominated 2019 LP Lux Prima. “Super Breath” won’t hit DSPs until tomorrow (Jul. 24), but you can listen to the smooth and sophisticated electro-rock jam all you want right here, right now.
Now that the very necessary work has been done to find the track breaks within Sault’s latest surprise magnum opus Acts of Faith, expect to hear it with increased frequency across the KCRW airwaves. That’s certainly the case with today’s MBE, where you’ll hear the track now going by “Turn it Around.” Plus, a Parliament classic in honor of George Clinton’s 83rd birthday, a 2023 cut from South Hill Experiment (part of KCRW Summer Nights, Jul. 27 @ Union Station), and a chance at FREE tix to celebrate vibey singer-songwriter Chris Cohen’s first record in five years at 2220 Arts + Archives.
Rumor has it that the freshly released Childish Gambino LP Bando Stone and the New World will be the last. LA artist Walker Noble always knew he wasn’t long for the world of corporate America. He also knew from a young age that “the one thing I could do better than all the other kids was draw.” But of course, societal messaging about the need for a “real job” prevailed. For much of Noble's adult life, artistic endeavors were relegated to side hustle status. Then the pandemic happened and Noble’s corporate structure fell away as a result. His wife DiDi — already the CEO of Walker Noble Studios , founded in 2017 — encouraged him to shift gears and pursue art full-time. Now the Nobles oversee a thriving business dedicated to “creating art that evokes calmness and celebrates the beauty of the world.”

Nigerian pop artist Tems is a massive worldwide deal, but she’s yet to release a debut LP. That all changes sometime in May, 2024 when she drops Born In The Wild, her highly anticipated album. This announcement comes on the heels of her rapturously received Coachella sets so if you don’t know her yet, you will. Get into this edition of MBE now to hear Born In The Wild’s lead single “Love Me JeJe”.
When you think of the current jazz landscape, chances are you’re thinking of something that connects to Shabaka Hutchings. The renowned saxophonist and band leader has historically shown a penchant for making maximalist epics with a vast cosmic reach — one of his most beloved projects is called The Comet is Coming , after all. Perhaps you witnessed his mastery of the sax in tribute to spiritual jazz pioneer Pharoah Sanders at the Hollywood Bowl in 2023. Hutchings was on hand to help bring Sanders’ career-capping, 2021 album length composition Promises to life with the record’s co-creator Floating Points (among other profoundly skilled collaborators, including The Los Angeles Studio Orchestra ).

Today’s MBE is slightly abbreviated due to overlapping airtime with NPR news coverage, but we’re quickly making up for lost time by getting things started with a brand new single from Dr. Dog. “Talk Is Cheap” comes our way ahead of their new self-titled LP (their first in six years) and it’s a freewheeling, soft-psychedelic romp. Plus, we cue up a couple of should-be classics from Kellee Patterson and Mandrill.
The countdown to Shannon & The Clams new LP The Moon Is In The Wrong Place is so very on. While we do still have to wait until May 10 to hear all the goods, we have the raucous new single “Big Wheel” cued up for you as part of this edition of MBE. Plus, highlights from Faye Webster’s Underdressed at the Symphony, Royel Otis’ PRATTS & PAIN, and Shabaka’s Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace.
Novena’s weekend was “Coach-ettera” (i.e. Coachella + other desert fun so Coachella, etc.), producer Anna Chang saw (almost) all the acts and proclaims Justice to be the winner of the weekend, and those of us who write the recaps are feeling mild FOMO. Then again, a little FOMO is worth the lack of Coachella cough and extended neck pain so we’ll call it a wash.
KCRW DJ Chris Douridas (re)takes the MBE hosting reigns to share Willow’s wildly ambitious jazz-rock opus “b i g f e e l i n g s”, the cinematic-leaning “Dreamers in the Field” from Dhani Harrison, Carmen Rizzo & Huur-Huur-Tu, and plenty of recs for your Coachella weekend two plotting.
Scottish DJ and producer Barry Can’t Swim found an instantaneous connection with house music devotees. His knack for organic composition that blends his own (considerable) piano skills with propulsive beats and genre-agnostic samples is a can’t-miss combination.
Barry Can’t Swim brings his already legendary live show to MBE. Plus a Vince Guaraldi song that has never been part of a “Peanuts” cartoon (that we know of).
French duo Justice — Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay — made a bold debut in the mid-2000s by blending elements of dance-punk (i.e. LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture) with the giddy “French Touch” house music of their countrymen (i.e. Alan Braxe , DJ Falcon , and Fred Falke). Each subsequent release has found them more sophisticated and more ambitious — especially when it comes to upping the showmanship for their storied live shows.
“Young Fathers is one of those bands I use to describe the ambition of KCRW,” asserts DJ and former Music Director Chris Douridas. “A band core to the sound of our relevancy, to the urgency, and our wanting to be living on the edge as a new music station. Early in my time here it was Massive Attack , then came TV on the Radio, now it’s these guys — multi-racial, genreless, rooted in possibility, heavy heavy underpinnings, hip-hop leaning.”
An underrated artifact of the peak-COVID-caution era is Apifera’s layered, meditative, primarily instrumental LP Overstand. The four-piece, who now appear to be based in LA, have just released their first single since late 2021 entitled “Theodore Marmalade” — a heavily narrativized affair about the titular character accompanied by the band’s emotion-stirring instrumentation. Hear it for yourself as part of this MBE along with the NEIL FRANCES x PawPaw Rod, Coachella-centric collab “High Notes” and Maya Hawke’s “Missing Out” ahead of her forthcoming album Chaos Angel (due May 31).
Shabaka Hutchings is one of the most innovative players taking part in London’s thriving and progressive jazz scene. You may know him from cosmic leaning projects like The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet. His new solo LP (out today), released as SHABAKA, is a more introspective affair. Case in point: “Insecurities” featuring lilting and vulnerable vocals from Moses Sumney . Hot on the heels of releasing an intensely awaited debut album — Malegría — psych-cumbia project Reyna Tropical’s founding member Fabi Reyna is bringing it to KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio. Formed in 2016 as “an organic, unhurried exchange between Fabi Reyna and Nectali “Sumohair” Diaz,” the project morphed into a solo project following Diaz’s untimely death in 2022. As a duo, Reyna Tropical received accolades from NPR’s Alt Latino , toured with Colombian electro-groovers Bomba Estéreo, and engaged in their own globe-trotting “tropical journey” to deepen and inform their signature sound.

Brazilian troubadour Rogê sets the Annenberg Performance studio at KCRW HQ aglow with a cosmically tropical set of future samba-soul classics. The recent LA-transplant regales us with stripped down takes on songs from his 2023 LP Curyman — his first to be recorded stateside. Settle in for the generous spirit inherent in Curyman cuts including “Camará,” “Pra Vida,” and album standout “Existe Uma Voz.” KCRW’s resident expert in all things Brazil, Ro “Wyldeflower” Contreras, is on hand as well for a freewheeling chat with our guest of honor which moves from the virtues of spending everyday on the beach eating açai bowls, to the Portuguese concept of saudade (roughly translating to longing and melancholy) which Contreras feels woven throughout the fabric of Rogê’s music. Ready your virtual passport for stamping, we’re going to Brazil. Legendary bossa nova and samba performer Astrud Gilberto has died at the age of 83 and we’re celebrating her life with a couple of versions of her most famous standard “The Girl From Ipanema” — original flavor and disco. Gilberto is said to have crafted the English lyrics to the song which was composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. Enjoy the trip down “Girl From Ipanema” lane alongside a few more choice cuts featuring Gilberto’s trademark breezy tone. And as though it was cosmically ordained, we’re giving you chances at tickets to check out more Brazilians, each carrying the legacy of Gilberto and her bossa nova brethren in their own way. Word of the iconic artist’s death at the age of 83 arrived just before the end of yesterday’s edition of MBE. While we were able to share a few of our favorite cuts in real time reaction to the news, today is our day to fully process the paramount loss to the music industry writ large that accompanies Turner’s passing. Often referred to as “The Queen of Rock and Roll,” Turner — both in her early career partnership with husband Ike Turner and her subsequent solo endeavors — will be remembered as a genre-obliterating, definitional figure. We’re exploring every inch of her storied career From 2011’s mantra-based anthem “Calling By Tina,” to her 1995 Bond theme “GoldenEye,” to hear earliest days dueting with Ike — revel with us in this unparalleled life. Plus, Arlo Parks’ latest single “Devotion” in honor of her eagerly anticipated LP My Soft Machine arriving at last tomorrow, more from Rahill’s engrossing post-folk album Flowers at Your Feet, and the beguiling soul of the young Florida native known simply as Q.
Big Thief guitarist Buck Meek has announced a new LP Haunted Mansion to be released in August, 2023. This will be the artist’s third solo album, and his first for indie stalwarts 4AD (also the label home of Big Thief). We’re premiering the album’s title track which was co-written with metaphysically minded songcrafter, Jolie Holland. The punchy, pedal steel guitar-forward country number is a song seeking to understand the immeasurable power of love. “It’s about love and... something other,” says Meek. “Something bigger than love, something that doesn’t challenge love exactly but stands in contrast to it. A soulfulness, or a soul seeking fullness.” And we have another LA Young Creator for your radar, the seriously funky Brayden Nguyen. Get down to the sounds of his absolute jam “Take Me Away,” and clear some space for it in your head. It’ll be camped out there for awhile.

RIP Andy Rourke, bassist for The Smiths. The Mancunian post-punk band whose riffs likely come to mind when you hear any music being described as “jangly” burned fast and bright from 1982 to 1987 (and they never ever got back together). But within that brief timeline, they defined a template for a brand of indie-romanticism that remains prominent to this day. While the juggernaut songwriting duo of lead singer/primary lyricist (Steven) Morrisey, and lead guitarist (Johnny) Marr hold the bulk of the credit for this influence… where would they be without those timeless basslines?
Bop on in for the harmonious heights of Say She She’s latest “Don’t You Dare Stop.” The B-side to their most recent single “Reeling” will be out on DSPs tonight, but you can listen right now, and run it back as much as your heart desires. Ghanian-Australian, singer-songwriter-rapper Genesis Owusu is nearly impossible to categorize. No simple genre tags fit his musically androgynous approach to songcraft exactly — his sound incorporates as many grungy guitar riffs as it does sick beats. It’s a big part of why each new Owusu release commands our full attention.
MBE has the US premiere of Ghanaian-Australian, genre-puncturing rapper Genesis Owusu’s "Leaving the Light.” It’s the lead single from his just announced sophomore LP STRUGGLER and you can peep the video now. David Bowie says, “Let’s Dance,” and so it shall be. Groove to that stone cold classic, alongside daytime disco banger “Cortes Modernos” from Global Beat: México alums CLUBZ; a summer jam from Bad Bunny’s acclaimed 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti; and the vintage contemporary vibes of “Falling Away” from Big Crown Records act Les Imprimés.
In the midst of a whirlwind tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of Violent Femmes’ eponymous 1983 debut, bassist and co-founder Brian Ritchie stops by MBE to share songs, reflections on his wide-ranging encounters, and even an impromptu solo on his shakuhachi (Japanese flute). His song selects and stories reveal a consummately curious explorer of the world, i.e. touching on his experience as an expat American punk rocker now based in Tasmania, Australia by looping us in on Tasmanian minimalists The Native Cats. Side note: learn more about Ritchie’s life abroad by peeping his Mona Foma festival here. He unlocks the “sophisticated-yet-accessible” cut that made him want to be a musician in the first place (Television’s “Friction”). Ready your cuchi-cuchis: Charo, the virtuosic guitarist, singer, comedian, actor, and all-around good hang, drops by MBE to share songs and stories… so many stories: from her upbringing in Murcia, Spain to the post-midnight phone calls she received from her good pal Elvis Presley (casual). She shares her favorite Elvis song, “Suspicious Minds”; the song that best defines her life’s journey (“queen” Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money),” and the Queen Liliukolani song that makes her nostalgic for her time spent living in Hawaii.
Living legend Charo is our first guest DJ to stretch her set into multiple hours of the show. The virtuosic guitarist, comedian, and all-around good hang, shares songs and stories… so many stories — from her upbringing in Murcia, Spain to the multiple 2 a.m. phone calls she received from her good pal Elvis Presley when the two shared similar Vegas casino-performance schedules. Kassa Overall — virtuosic jazz drummer, Grammy-nominee, and long-standing Nick Hakim collaborator — is the latest to world premiere a track live on MBE. “The Lava Is Calm,” featuring Overall’s fellow Grammy nominee/jazz virtuoso Theo Croker on the trumpet, plays with tension and rapidly shifting soundscapes over the course of its three minute run time. Anxiously half-spoken, half-sung words over gentle bossa nova beats give way to abrupt bursts of noise, and explosive electric guitar stretches that demand active listening throughout. This one doesn’t hit DSPs until Friday, Apr. 28 so the only place you’ll be hearing it until then is the MBE archives. “The Lava Is Calm,” will appear as part of ANIMALS — Overall’s debut LP for tastemaking label Warp Records, set for release on May 25. We’re also sharing the latest standalone work from Four Tet since last year’s “Mango Feedback.” The sprawling electro-jazz piece “Three Drums,” comes on the heels of a transcendent Coachella headlining set which found Four Tet teaming with fellow super producers Skrillex and Fred again.. Plus, a tease of PJ Harvey’s first album in seven years, I Inside the Old Year Dying; a bit of “cowboy jazz” from Rahill’s forthcoming Flowers at Your Feet (due May 12 via Big Dada); and a low key classic 1984 cut from Scottish avant-poppers The Blue Nile.

Today, we celebrate him through selections from his vast songbook. Impromptu dance parties are strongly encouraged. Alabama eight-piece St.Paul & The Broken Bones are prone to dabbling in shadowy psychedelics and boundary-pushing R&B. Their new album, Angels In Science Fiction, finds them pushing the limits of their expansive sound simultaneously further outward and inward, with their ambitious instrumentation forming a bedrock for heart-wrenching lyrics — initially penned as letters to frontman Paul Janeway’s newborn child. Danish soul singer Coco O. (Quadron) returns with “Many Ways,” her first solo offering in two years, and June Mcdoom’s dreamy folk song “On My Way” is up for grabs as Today’s Top Tune. Plus, Stevie Wonder in the ‘80s.

We’re barely scratching the surface of The Purple One’s contributions to popular culture, but tune in as we celebrate the life and legacy of the GOAT. Because, nine years ago, I was at the festival with my brother looking on stage, and I was like, I want to be there one day. And with hard work, and perseverance it happened.”

We’re keeping our sonic nods to the occasion light, but potent with Jamiroquai’s “Space Cowboy,” and Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs honoring Sun Ra with his solo track “Liquid Diamonds.”
Fresh off an invigorating Coachella set featuring guest appearances from Piya Malik, and Freddie Gibbs — Leon Michels (El Michels Affair) stops by KCRW to sling some tunes. The lowkey mogul behind Big Crown Records, producer for artists like Lady Wray, and crafter of his own layered soul compositions, opens up about the songs that have shaped his tastes over the years. From the Sister Nancy classic “Bam Bam” that debuted the year he was born, to one of his faves from “the homies” Brainstory (mainstays of the Big Crown stable of artists). The rest of the set is similarly El Michels Affair informed — cuts from his collab with Dan Auerbach, The Arcs, his new album with Black Thought, Glorious Game, and even deeper catalog work from Menahan Street Band are all in play. Plus, we connect the dots with a couple of tracks sampling Lou Reed’s legendary “Walk On The Wild Side.”
Click in for the world premiere of Everything but the Girl’s final single before their feverishly anticipated new album, Fuse, drops this Friday (Apr. 21). “No One Knows We’re Dancing,” changes the pace a bit from the dance-forward singles we’ve gotten from Fuse so far. While the song itself is an ode to band member Ben Watt’s time DJ-ing day parties in West London, the atmosphere it provides is contemplative and lush. It takes its time to present character studies of the types that find their community on the same dance floors week after week after week, eventually coming to “know everybody’s name.” Stylistically it feels like something of a bridge between the group’s keenly observed, early-era acoustic sounds, and the genre-defining electro they’ve offered up since the mid-90’s. We are officially counting down the seconds until we have the full album in our hot little hands. The rest of today’s MBE is similarly reflective, and action packed. You’ll hear plenty of sonic nods to the influential percussion style of Azymuth’s Ivan "Mamão" Conti, as the founding member of the famed Brazilian jazz-funk trio died recently at the age of 76. We’re also getting into the mood for the upcoming season at the Ford Theater with a cut from serpentwithfeet who will be bringing “Heart of Brick” to the storied venue in October. The 1974 cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” by Spanish sibling duo Hermanos Calatrava is an absolute must-hear, and we’re playing it for you. Positioned alongside the complex existential themes of “Borrow Trouble” from Feist’s forthcoming LP Multitudes — a song she refers to as “the sound of trouble itself” — and the genre-morphing expanse of Lithuanian jazz drummer/producer Marijus Aleksa’s “As They Are;” this is an MBE to sink your teeth into.

On their way to Texas for a handful of SXSW showcases, Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez stop by KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio to get into the groove. News of the death of pioneering jazz artist Wayne Shorter broke just as MBE was starting. We begin our process of honoring the life and work of the 89 year-old legend through his connection to Brazil. Collaborating with the equally legendary Milton Nascimento on the 1974 project Native Dancer, Shorter had a hand in blending jazz, rock, and funk elements with Brazilian rhythms to create music that feels tangible no matter where in the world you happen to be.
We welcome Women’s History Month with the flourish of Buckshot LeFonque’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings,” as requested by KCRW Music’s executive producer Ariana Morgenstern. The 1994 electronic-epic samples Maya Angelou reading her seminal work of the same name over Fela Kuti’s “Beats of No Nation.” With a centerpiece like LeFonque’s, it’s no wonder the rest of today’s tunes are flowing so freely. Dry Cleaning’s Swampy EP delivers a simmering remix of “Hot Penny Day” from 2022’s Breakthrough Artist Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul; Australian groovers Surprise Chef drop a seriously smooth new single; and a heady examination of the infinitely psychedelic influence of Pink Floyd’s 1973 master work The Dark Side of the Moon on its 50th anniversary has us feeling inspired.
Extremely cool cultural collab alert. KCRW is extending our reach with the LA Philharmonic to partner on a series at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The “KCRW Series” will consist of four shows, each spotlighting a specialized take on international music and dance. This includes a set with acclaimed Brazilian samba-pop artist, Marisa Monte; a Flamenco! night with Spain’s Maria Bermudez Sonidos Gitanos, and a full evening with Indian indie-folk artist Prateek Kuhad who has drawn comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and José González. The series is anchored by Korean-American guitar goddess Michelle Zauner who performs under the moniker Japanese Breakfast. She’ll take the stage on Thursday, Sept. 28 alongside Japanese indie-folk-innovator Ichiko Aoba. We’re serving up some Japanese Breakfast during this edition of MBE by way of the epic centerpiece to Zauner’s 2021 opus Jubilee. “[KCRW is] the soundtrack to my life,” he says. “For any creative that works in the industry, you know that music is the fuel for your engine. And what kind of gas you put into your engine is so important. You provide that high octane, high energy stuff for me.”
Staple’s guest DJ set is gassing-up our tanks today, from his opening rejoinder of a cut from Black Star’s debut album (for which he designed the cover art) to his tip off to rising artist Shirt, whom the designer calls a “marketing genius with no filter.” (See: Shirt’s song “Dave Chappelle is Wrong.”) He also serves up his go-to dance jam from Wizkid and Tems, and tells us about the vast reserves of existential loneliness he hears in Elton John’s “Rocket Man.”

What a day for a world premiere! Mexico City experimental dream-pop outfit Y La Bamba has always been a prolific act, even finding the space to release singles during the early days of COVID-19 lockdowns. At the same time, their work is always deeply considered and imbued with story. It’s a story we’re thrilled to share as we bring you “Dibujos De Mi Alma,” the official first single from Y La Bamba’s forthcoming seventh album, Lucha, due April 28 via Tender Loving Empire.
Translating to “Drawings of My Soul,” the track is described by Y La Bamba’s frontwoman and principal songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos as, “a song of longing for this person but at the same time trying to detach myself from the unhealthy parts of connection.” Hear it now, and ready yourself for the further complexities of Lucha as whole, which will go deeper into thorny relationship dynamics, the isolation inherent during peak “shelter in place,” and Mendoza Ramos’ decision to leave her longtime home base of Portland for Mexico City.

It’s New Music…Tuesday? British collective SAULT released five (!) new albums this morning, totaling over 67 tracks. Some feature traditional SAULT sounds similar to their early work, but also incorporate world sounds and percussion, psych, and rock. Israeli music producer and composer Kutiman weaves Can, Arthur Verocai, and Tame Impala influences on his new album, “Open.” As a teen in Tel Aviv, college radio had a huge impact on his musical taste, exposing him to Parliament, trip-hop, and jungle.
And Margo Price, the Nashville-based country singer-songwriter, released a track from her upcoming album today. Ahead of the January drop, she's also released a memoir, “Maybe We’ll Make It,” which is about loss, motherhood, and the search for artistic freedom in the midst of the agony experienced by so many aspiring musicians. Happy Public Radio Music Day! We’re celebrating KCRW fave Meshell Ndegeocello (whose portrait hangs just outside the studio from which we broadcast) with her striking cover of the 1985 classic “Tender Love” by Force MD.
The track “I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain” just dropped, a rare duet that finds Andrew Bird teaming up with Phoebe Bridgers for a haunting reimagining of Emily Dickinson's poem. The project was initially meant to be part of Bird’s "Inside Problems" album, but didn't quite make the cut. Bird was reinspired to release it upon hearing Bridgers' contribution.
Turn up your volume for the hard driving, unexpected, and dare we say spooky cut from the “Godzilla” soundtrack by Belvera Lean, “Miyarabi's Prayer” (Paul Nice Flip). Then slow down and relax with classic Stevie on “Isn’t She Lovely,” reworked by Young Pulse — long, luscious, and the perfect complement to your Wednesday.

Sanders passed away over the weekend at the age of 81. We rise and breathe with his 1971 release, “Morning Prayer.”

It’s a Monday melange of music to get your week started on the good foot. Warm up with the infectious mix of sweet ’60s soul + the grit and groove of early ’70s R&B provided by SoCal crooners Thee Sacred Souls. Previously unreleased Blondie demos “Puerto Rico” and “Once I Had a Love” (an early version of their hit “Heart of Glass”) offer a glimpse into the beginnings of a young punk band who would later become a dancefloor phenomenon. For a full deep dive into Blondie's pre-disco sounds, grab that full archival box set. It comes complete with the proto-new-wave band’s first six albums along with b-sides, rarities and more. Plus, we celebrate Dinah Washington’s birthday, London band ALASKALASKA’s witty soundclashing style and post-punk girl group Mo-dettes’ 1979 debut.
As we somehow find ourselves on the last Friday of August, the unspoken battle for Song of the Summer is showing up in full effect today. Obvious contenders in the set include dance party heaters like Jessie Ware’s “Free Yourself” and Beyonce’s “Break My Soul” (especially the version we spin, which reworks Sade's “Sweetest Taboo”). Also at the table are fresh and playful sounds from Ela Minus & DJ Python on “Pájaros en Verano” and Today’s Top Tune courtesy of Moon Boots’ track “Come Back Around (feat. Cherry Glazerr).”
New Music Friday only complicates the matter, with a serious goodie dropping from Hope Tala called “Leave It On the Dancefloor” and another from a Jersey-based artist named Ehiorobo, who blends experimental R&B, rap, jazz, and noise punk to create an exciting auditory explosion.

Leon Ware’s feel-good, lyrically-on point 1982 release “Why I Came to California'' sets the tone as we celebrate our gorgeous Golden State on California Public Radio Day alongside all the local news, programming, and, of course, music that make us proud to be here.
And since spinning tunes for you is the highest honor, a royal set is in order. In between the sounds of Elvis Presley’s 1956 release “Don’t Be Cruel” — selected today by our faithful weatherman David Lynch — and Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady,” we’ve got the the acoustic demo version of a track from Prince’s 1979 self-titled debut album. He allegedly wrote “I Feel for You” for his crush at the time, jazz pianist and R&B singer Patrice Rushen. As luck would have it, you can experience the timeless sounds of Patrice this Sunday at the Leimert Park Jazz Festival, hosted by KCRW’s very own jazz cat LeRoy Downs.

This year alone, nascent soul-funk trio Say She She have dropped four singles that have shimmied into heavy rotation across DJ playlists at KCRW, but none of them are slated for their forthcoming debut album. That changes today with the release of “Prism,” their new single glistening with early ‘80s post-disco sounds and a particular nod to reggae’s romantic sub-genre lovers’ rock. It’s all rounded out with the trio’s signature lush harmonies, and has us eagerly awaiting the album’s Oct. 7 release date.
Then, come find yourself in a state of happy hypnosis with the psychedelic pop sounds of “Unfold,” the title track to a forthcoming unreleased album from French musician Melody Prochet, a.k.a. Melody’s Echo Chamber. Due out on the album Sept. 30, this is one of seven rare tracks that were recorded and co-produced with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker in Perth, Australia and finished in the South of France.

In honor of last night’s epic KCRW Festival show at the Hollywood Bowl — headlined by LA’s very own Grammy-winning polymath Flying Lotus — we kick off a new week with the grounding sounds of “Infinince or Infinity” by Terence, Etc., the multidisciplinary artist and signee of FlyLo’s label Brainfeeder. Home to fellow luminaries Kamasi Washington, Tokimonsta, and Thundercat, Brainfeeder started out as a low-key creative collective and has become a full-fledged independent label with a distinctly cool sound.
Plus, big boogie energy for your Monday with a 1980 Kenix cut featured on the “Disco Vocals: Soulful Dancefloor Cuts” compilation, and a more recent Neil Frances edit of “Boogie Oogie Oogie” from ‘70s disco-soul group A Taste Of Honey.
Who better to help ring in National Radio Day than R&B super producer Raphael Saadiq, with his 2011 release “Radio”? In the spirit of championing record playing, story telling, and the magic of the moment, we’ve got Jamiroquai’s timeless classic “Virtual Insanity” by request (and released 26 years ago today), “Rushes” from Frank Ocean’s unexpected visual album “Endless” (celebrating its 5 year anniversary today), and the perfect song “Amoeba” by singer-songwriter Clairo (who turned 24 yesterday). LA-based lyricist, podcaster, producer, crafter of beats, and occasional wrestler Open Mike Eagle returns to the scene with “I’ll Fight You,” off his forthcoming project “Component System With The Auto Reverse.” Dropping October 7 on his own label, Open Mike’s unique humor and approach to socio-political observational comedy will surely be showing up all over this solo album-cum- spiritual mixtape. We also spin a tale of two producers: As the story goes, renowned British electronic producer Matthew Herbert once dared American experimental musician, composer, producer, and scholar Drew Daniel to produce a house beat. Daniel accepted the challenge, and The Pink Soft Truth was born. “Wanna Know,” Daniel’s latest release as TPST, is a full-on vibe. Plus, we’ve got a Herbie Hancock-filled set, including his feature on “MOON,” the newest from young, rising jazz stars Domi (22) and JD Beck (19), who’ve teamed up with a slew of heavy hitters on their recently released debut album. “NOT TiGHT” finds itself at No. 9 on KCRW’s Top 30 Chart this week. Sampa Tembo — a.k.a. Sampa the Great — is one of global hip-hop’s most compelling and outspoken voices. Now back in her home country of Zambia after time spent in Botswana and Australia, the 29-year-old rap maven joins us in the studio amid her first international tour for a guest DJ set highlighting Southern Africa’s underground, including Chef 187, A.T.I, and Mpho Sebina. She also tells us about founding an audio production workshop for Zambian women, her family ties to legendary Zamrock outfit Witch, and why, after sweeping the ARIAs (Australia’s Grammys), she’s still “Zambian at the end of the day” — and how that informs her hotly-anticipated new album "As Above So Below," out Sept. 9.

While she’s likely best known for her starring role as Sandy in the 1978 musical “Grease,” and for mega pop hits like “Physical…” ONJ also leant her talents to the cult classic ‘80s fantasy Xanadu, and gave us a sparkling cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Join us as we attempt to break through the surface of her otherworldly magic, and explore the legacy she leaves behind. Another legend we honor is Motown hit-maker Lamont Dozier, who passed away yesterday at the age of 81. Y’all heard the big news? Award-winning journalist and big time public radio guy David Greene is officially part of the KCRW family as the new host of Left, Right & Center! Naturally, we had to put him in the MBE hot seat. It’s no surprise that Greene speaks as passionately and thoughtfully about his stance on pizza toppings and karaoke as he does about global politics.
And Greene’s song selections are as delightful as he is, leading off with Devon Gilfillian's standout composition for Greene’s previous post at NPR’s Morning Edition. Greene also reflects on slinking off to work in the middle of the night to Silk Sonic, and that time TLC’s T-Boz nicknamed him “Big Sexy.” Plus, the man does a damn fine Barry Manilow impression.

The LA skyline is a little dimmer today as one of our brightest lights is now shining in from another celestial plane. Today’s show honors the memory of Bronx born, honorary Angeleno Vin Scully, the voice of the Dodgers from 1950 to 2016. In 1958, Scully followed the Dodgers from their original Brooklyn residence to their permanent home in our fair city of angels where he immediately became integral to the experience of being a fan. Through clips of some of Scully’s most legendary play by plays, interviews, and musings on the human condition alongside a smattering of songs recorded by, led by, or merely in celebration of this legend… we’re here to arrive as close as possible to the tribute this man deserves. And what way to celebrate such a vibrant life than to dance? Plenty of our sonic nods to Scully, will have you movin’ and groovin’ through the tears. And when Beyoncé arrives toward the end of the stretch we’re left with no choice but to surrender, and move this entire operation over to the club.
