ASORC at 50: Bernadine Euers on What Rehabilitation Counsellors Do
Rhea marks this 50th episode of the Intelligent Rebellion Podcast “Ten Minutes With” by speaking with Bernadine Euers, CEO of Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (ASORC), which is celebrating its 50-year anniversary after starting in 1976.
They discuss ASORC’s recent first major face-to-face conference in about 10 years, acknowledging emcee Liz Wright, Aunty Norma’s Welcome to Country, and contributions from directors, fellows, members, and speakers.
Rhea notes Rehabilitation Counsellors are underutilised and poorly understood in workers compensation and personal injury, prompting Bernadine to explain that the work is “deep,” treating the whole person, coordinating across professionals and systems (including justice and education), and aiming to become unnecessary once clients regain participation.
Bernadine highlights ongoing learning, ASORC’s “find a Rehabilitation Counsellor” website tool, and her inclusion-focused background.

Mat Seeto on Trauma-Informed Factual Investigations in Workers Compensation
Rhea interviews Mat Seeto, CEO of Clarity Workplace Solutions, recounting how they first met at CrossFit Blacktown before discussing Mat’s career evolution across 21 years in workers compensation.
Mat outlines roles in claims and self-insurance at NSW Police Force, Wesfarmers and Westpac (including some Asia Pacific claim exposure), a period in rehab with Konekt, a career break to help establish his wife’s CrossFit gym, then a return to NSW Police before moving into investigation services and eventually becoming CEO of Clarity about four years ago.
He challenges stereotypes of investigations as surveillance, noting surveillance is under 10% of their work, with most being factual investigations. Mat explains Clarity’s person-centered, trauma-informed approach to gather a claimant’s version of events to support decision-makers, improve claimant engagement, and aid return to work, and suggests simple language for explaining referrals.

In 2023, we recorded a conversation with Anjelo Ratnachandra "The Intelligent Rebellion" podcast, and its message is more relevant now than ever. This is the 10min version of that conversation. Listen to the full episode
Host Rhea Mercado interviews physiotherapist Anjelo Ratnachandra, founder of Beyond Pain, about treating chronic pain and illness through a biopsychosocial lens.
Anjelo shares his 20-year background across chronic pain, fatigue, mental health, long COVID, and counselling, plus lived experience after a collapsed lung and a Molotov cocktail attack that led to burns and chronic pain; despite medical doubts, he later trekked to Everest Base Camp, influenced by a Buddhist philosophy and a commitment to “walk the talk.”
Rhea and Anjelo discuss why identical pathologies can recover differently, how guidelines are guardrails with necessary grey areas, and why education, empathy, and client-centered interdisciplinary teamwork can outperform routine hands-on care. They address overtreatment, dependency/learned helplessness, outcome measurement, self-management, and how to raise sex and intimacy concerns in assessment.

What is EMDR? A 10-Minute Breakdown with Psychologist Warwick In a short podcast chat,
Rhea speaks with Psychologist Warwick, who has 25 years’ experience and runs At Work OH&S, a business providing both rehab and treatment with a focus on trauma and pain management.
Warwick explains how he moved into trauma work through assisting pharmacies after hold-ups and later chronic pain work via rehab providers.
The main discussion introduces Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), described as a gold-standard trauma treatment also used for pain, using bilateral stimulation to induce a REM-like state so the brain can process “target memories” without requiring retelling.
Warwick outlines identifying a target memory and negative belief, running stimulation in sets, checking client responses, and aiming to keep the memory while removing distress; he notes it can be highly effective for some clients but isn’t suitable for everyone, so clinicians trial tolerability and may use trauma-focused CBT instead.

She explains rehab counselling as career development, case management, and support for adjustment to disability after medical and allied health care. Jo shares five lessons she learnt along her recovery journey.
Exercise is not a panacea and may be limited by intolerance work is not always wellness and must be “good work,” as pushing through prolonged her sensitivity and distress
Pacing is principles-based and varies day to day
Adjustment is not the absence of grief or anger but the ability to function alongside them
Being unwell carries a heavy administrative workload.

He shares his origin story in workers compensation, describing initial reluctance due to the clunky system, limited communication, and delays between injury, claim acceptance, and receiving supports, which made cases feel “too hard.”
After joining CHG through a persistent friend and seeing their early intervention programs, he grew to enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to support injured people amid many stakeholders.

Mereesha, a neuroscience-focused occupational therapist and ARPA award winner for exceptional professional injury management advisor, discusses launching her clinical business InjurySense to address cognitive issues in claims, especially concussion and traumatic brain injury.
She explains that concussion recovery is not straightforward and can function like a system-wide capacity problem involving cognition, autonomic nervous system regulation, sleep, energy, pain, and overlapping whiplash symptoms.
Mereesha describes common signs such as fatigue, poor sleep, dizziness, light sensitivity, nausea, and concentration problems, which can progress into anxiety, stress, and depression if untreated. She notes women can have more severe and prolonged symptoms due to hormonal cycles, and urges early referral to concussion-specialist physiotherapy or occupational therapy to reduce dysregulation and claim duration.

In 2021, we recorded a powerful conversation with James Ellis on "The Intelligent Rebellion" podcast, and its message is more relevant now than ever. This is the 10min version of that conversation.
This conversation critiques healthcare and return-to-work systems that prioritise KPIs, costs, and profit over seeing patients as people. James and Rhea discuss the ethical tension of running a for-profit healthcare business while maintaining duty of care, and draw a clear line against profit-driven decisions that extend treatment beyond what is ethically and scientifically best.
They explore intuition, when it’s reliable (deep familiarity) and when it misleads (job interviews) and connect it to evidence-based practice, arguing that hunches often spark research while science helps overcome bias, though it can be misused. James emphasises that supporting injured workers requires trust and listening, but billing models and “billable hours” push clinicians toward prescribing over listening, limiting true “hours of care.”
Despite the years that have passed, these topics remain integral to understanding and reforming our approach to healthcare and compensation. The insights shared by James continue to spark thought and drive conversations in our industry today.
We invite you to listen to this episode and reflect on how we can continue to improve our systems for all the humans within.

Fuck it, I quit. This is a sentiment which Denver Simonsz and Rhea share. Surfing the interweb, Rhea stumbled upon Denver's LinkedIn profile and was instantly intrigued. Denver's posts and articles are a delight to read - a blend of authentic storytelling, wisdom, and introspection. Of course, you can only learn so much about a person from their online presence, so Rhea asked Denver onto the pod for a chat.

In 2023, Australia became the first country in the world to legalise the use of psychedelics to treat PTSD and treatment-resistant depression. Welcome to Episode #31 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. Sporulation, Psychedelics and Healthcare.
In this episode of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast, I chat with Melissa Errey, founder of Sporulation Art Exhibition and healthcare professional, and Voytek Bereza, a Neuropsychopharmacist Prescriber and founder of The Transparent Company.
In this episode:
July 1st 2023 is when Australia became the first country in the world to legalise the use of psychedelics to treat some mental health conditions. From July 1st 2023 psychiatrists were authorised to prescribe products containing 3,4‑methylenedioxy‑methamphetamine (MDMA) or psilocybin for use in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy to treat specific mental health conditions.
MDMA may be prescribed for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Psilocybin may be prescribed for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). For these specific uses, psilocybin and MDMA have been listed as Schedule 8 (Controlled Drugs) medicines in the Poisons Standard.
To be able to prescribe MDMA or psilocybin for these conditions, a psychiatrist must be an Authorised Prescriber (AP) under the TGA’s Authorised Prescriber scheme. Before seeking approval to be an AP, the psychiatrist must first obtain approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).
It was quite serendipitous that I was to meet Melissa Errey in October 2023, only three months later. It’s turns out, Melissa a health professional by day, and an artist by night was already part of a community of people from all walks of life, who were exploring and discussing the role of psychedelics in healthcare and in medicine.

Welcome to episode 30 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast: Let's Talk About Sex. Our guest is Saul Isbister, President of Touching Base Inc A volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation, developed out of the need to assist people with disability and sex workers to connect with each other, focusing on access, discrimination, human rights and legal issues and the attitudinal barriers that these two marginalised communities can face.
Since episode 19 when Anjelo Ratnachandra and I touched on the subject of intimacy, sex, and chronic pain, I’ve continued to wonder and be curious about the topic of intimacy and sex, particularly in the personal injury and disability space. Healthcare professionals and rehab people are always going on about holistic care, and a biopsychosocial approach, and, a part of that is acknowledging that sexual and physical intimacy are at the core to the human experience.

Exercise Physiology Services fall outside the scope of regulation of The National Law, rendering certain provisions of the law inapplicable to this profession. Nonetheless, every person as an individual is subject to the laws of the land.Welcome to Episode #28 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. Lawyer Up! with Tyrone Walker, Special Counsel at Hunt & Hunt.
Howdy Folks, Rhea here. In late 2023, I was engaged in a Facebook forum thread. I don’t usually enjoy having nuanced discussions over social media comment sections, so I bowed out after a few exchanges. My entry point into the thread was regarding the use of the word “specialist,” and the discussion went to whether exercise physiologists were subject to The Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009, which is a nationally consistent law which was passed in QLD and enacted in states and territories in 2009 and 2010. From here on I’ll just refer to it as The National Law.
One side of the discussion was that exercise physiologists were not subject to The National Law, I agreed that, yes, Exercise Physiology Services fall outside the scope of regulation of The National Law, rendering certain provisions of the law inapplicable to this profession. Nonetheless, every person as an individual is subject to the laws of the land. As I dove straight down the legal rabbit hole, I found more questions than answers, and that’s when I turned to Tyrone Walker, Special Counsel at Hunt & Hunt in NSW.

For nearly two decades, the exercise physiology community has advocated for a change in the legislation to ensure fair and equitable access to healthcare services for the Australian Community.
Welcome to The Intelligent Rebellion podcast, hosted by Rhea Mercado, Healthcare Humanist, Speaker and Author. @rheamercs
Subscribers of The Intelligent Rebellion newsletter have access the extended version of this episode which includes the full interview with Dr Felix Meyer. Check your inbox.
For more than two decades, there has been a tax imposed on the Australian community making access to some healthcare services more expensive than others. This is the Goods & Services Tax or the (GST). When this tax was introduced in Australia in July 2000 it exempted multiple healthcare services like hospitals, aged care, disability, general health and allied health services from applying GST to their services, however, other medical services including EP, music therapists, psychotherapists, counsellors and diabetes educators were not included in the exemption.
For nearly two decades, the exercise physiology community has advocated for a change in the legislation to ensure fair and equitable access to healthcare services for the Australian Community. For nearly two decades, the community have been meeting with politicians, writing letters, and signing petitions.
Rhea sat down with David Beard, an exercise physiologist, and Dr Felix Meyer a representative of Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), the professional association for exercise physiologist to discuss why it’s so important for EP services to be GST-free, how GST-free services benefit the Australian community, and what in the world is it taking so long?

Welcome to Short Stuff Sessions of the The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. This Short Stuff is from Episode 010: Fail. Succeed. Grow. Repeat. with Samantha Flinn.
Listen to the full episode
In this penultimate episode of season 2, Rhea chats with Samantha Flinn. A wife, a mom and an accidental exercise physiologist. Sam shares her adventures through business ownership, motherhood and now as a workplace rehab consultant and how she made an intentional decision regarding what failure she is willing to accept and which ones she will not. Sam shares her epic failures and the tough lessons learnt along the way.
She has some nuggets of wisdom for anyone thinking about doing a career transition from clinical work to rehab consultancy. What makes this chat with Sam so fascinating is the incredible insight she has about her own identity, her personal flaws and strengths and how she has embraced all these parts of herself.

Welcome to Short Stuff Sessions of the The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. This Short Stuff is from Episode 007 Exercise Physiologist Vs Physiotherapist with Nikki Lodge and Matt Hicks of Sydney West Sports Medicine.
Listen to the full episode
In this episode we chat with Nikki Lodge and Matt Hicks from Sydney West Sports Medicine. Nikki and Matt start with their healthcare origin stories and what they would be doing if not in healthcare. Rhea asks them about their thoughts on a 2020 Australia Physiotherapy Association article in which the author refers to Exercise Physiology is a “trend” and had him seeing “red” when he had “work cover and GPs stating to me that patients need exercise not physiotherapy to rehabilitate.” Read the full article here.
Nikki and Matt are on a mission to create safe spaces for both healthcare practitioners and the community to educate, empower and explore better ways to help people heal and recover. By unintentionally gathering a team of un-like minds with unique interests and skillsets and combining this with the immense resources available in their immediate area they have developed a truly multi-disciplinary approach to rehabilitation and recovery.
During the chat, Matt also muses whether allied healthcare is a consultative process or a rehabilitative process, leading to discussion about the fluidity of rehabilitation and scrapping of the unilateral fee model.
Nikki, Matt and Rhea discuss reasons why healthcare professionals hold onto their patients, wondering if it is about greed, mis-trust, lack of referral pathways, dependency on our patients or a combination of some or all of these factors.
Like all chats in The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast, this discussion is emergent, ignites curiosity, raises more questions than answers, and celebrates the people and businesses which are placing humanity and ethics at the heart of their decisions.

Welcome to Episode 24 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. Our guest is Joy Adan, a creative consultant, artist, storyteller, Mother, wife, daughter and sister.
Joy and Rhea chat about growing up in the Filipino culture, what it’s like to challenge our cultural norms, making intentional decisions, and the power of faith and stillness. Joy shares the expectations she felt being from a migrant Filo family, and the how these expectations shaped her life and decisions. That is until, about 10 years ago when Joy had a chat with her Dad, which made her question most everything she believed.
For the past 10 years, Joy has been listening to the whispers in her own heart to seek out what truly is important in her life. She has deliberately invested her time and energy into people, business and causes which make the world a better place, and has leaned into the experiences which make her heart sing.
Through both her volunteer work, and her business, Joy is using her superpowers to encourage people to sit in the stillness, to define their own version of success, and to live a life of creativity and a life of kindness.

This is Short Stuff from Episode 6 with Brooke Archibald and Jane Gallard, two very different people united by one purpose. Since the full episode aired, Jane has gone to complete two UTA 100, and Brooke is now making waves at Aquafit.

Meet Brooke Archibald and Jane Gallard, two very different people united by one purpose. Brooke and Jane are the dynamic duo behind the One55 Health & Fitness Centre.
During Sydney covid lockdown 2021 when other fitness centres went online with their classes, One55 went in a different direction. Brooke and Jane would jump onto social media and send messages of love and support to their tribe whilst chronicling their own COVID lockdown journey. So I was eager to speak with them about what it was like to for them during this time and how they got through it.
They chat about their internal dialogues and how they both coped through the lockdown. Jane and Brooke share their personal experiences of a Mum and the network of support needed to show your best self to the world.
They touch on the dangers of social media and self-proclaimed fitness “experts” and how Brooke and Jane’s message to their tribe is focused on wellbeing and mental well-being rather than on physical looks. The chat spirals quickly into crushing over a certain A-List celebrity, guilty pleasures and Karate side-kicks in dark alleyways.

Welcome to Episode 16 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. Our guest is Marc Brown, a swimmer, an educator and coordinator at the University of Wollongong, and all-around good human.
Marc talks reflects on the past 20 years gasp as an educator and reminisces about the days where collegiality, morning tea and open doors were the norm. He poignantly speaks about Government funding cuts which have forced universities to move away from being an educational institution to one which operates like a corporate entity, and his observation that, for some academics, students have become a nuisance standing in the way of their research.
Marc explains his dream education model which could simultaneously provide students with the educational experience they deserve and empower professionals to share their knowledge as they become experts in their chosen fields.
Marc shares stories of students doing the darndest things during prac labs prompting shout outs to some UOW Alumni, colleagues and friends. If you have been a student of Marc's, you'll want to hear this one. And if you’re not – heck, you’ll want to hear this one too.

We’re back with Season 3 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast. To open this season we have Fiona Fonti, a mum, a wife, a business owner and an all-around good human. Rhea first heard about Fiona from a friend, and then months later from another friend. Now having met Fiona and spending time with her, I know what the Hype is about. Fiona, already being an NDIA participant recently had a significant medical episode. She went from the professional and being viciously independent to now being the patient and needing help with aspect of her daily life. She has learnt to embrace the simpler things and make definite choices about where to put her energy.
Fiona is generous is sharing her story including the hardships and challenges. She is insightful and reflective, candid and wonderfully optimistic. Fiona shares her experience about trying to return to work and managing her business after the medical episode. She talks about the difficulties in navigating through the healthcare system, the impact on her family, and about how this experience makes her a better professional. And she also has some tips for the rest of us.
Fiona was reluctant to toot her own horn, she is one of the great people in the rehab world, someone who cares deeply for her staff and for the clients. Someone who needs to be celebrated. In sharing her story and coming on the podcast, Fiona hopes that people will connect with her. She is an open book and invites everyone to “ask her anything” about any aspect of her life, her business, her disability and her ongoing recovery. Let’s get to it, this is Fiona Fonti. Even though we were on the sixth floor, the noise from the giant excavator can still be heard in the background. Sorry folks, Bob The Builder just couldn’t be stopped.

Does religion have a place in healthcare practise? In this final episode of season 2 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast, Rhea goes solo to muse about the place of religion in healthcare and to share her personal journey with religion including time spent as an “Antioch-er.”
With this background, Rhea explores how religious beliefs or atheism might impact healthcare practice. Rhea admits that it wasn’t until recently when she was trying to decode people’s choices around the pandemic, reading about abortion laws around the world, and peering into Australia’s religious freedom bill that her curiosity in this topic was ignited. Rhea then went and explored if there was a place for religion in healthcare, and if so, how religious beliefs could influence decisions made by the patient and by the healthcare professional.
Rhea asks: Should a healthcare professional make decisions based on their religion’s teachings? How does a person's religious beliefs impact their choices about healthcare? How does the religious moral ethics and beliefs of a healthcare professional, which are fundamental to their personal morals give them the right to refuse medical treatment to a patient?

In this episode Rhea chats with Rosemary McKenzie-Ferguson who is a self-described trouble maker. Up until this episode on the pod, Rhea has been speaking with healthcare and rehabilitation professionals. Today she chats with somebody who has been personally affected by a workplace injury, has experienced the inequality and the complexity of the system and has seriously gone about trying to fix it. Rosemary is the founder of Craig's Table, a not-for-profit organisation which advocates for and supports people who have sustained a workplace injury. If you are anywhere within the orbit of workers compensation or the healthcare of people who have sustained workplace injuries - You need to listen to this, you need to take note of this because what Rosemary has to say is pretty f**king important.
In Rosemary's own words,
"I am not a victim I am not a survivor, I am Rosemary". The journey has been a long and twisted one, prescription addiction, three suicide attempts, The Deceased Workers Memorial Forest in Adelaide, part of the committee for the National Deceased Workers Memorial in Canberra, writing the world’s first community engagement concept (Craig’s Table written by a person with a workplace injury (I am not an injured worker I have a workplace injury) for others who have sustained a workplace injury.
Along the way I have received for my work a Pride of Australia Pin, Advantage SA Community Leader Award, Charles Sturt Community Leader Award, reached the final selection for and Australia Day Award and a Summa Comp Laude Award- I am the first Australian to receive international recognition and the first person with a workplace injury to receive the recognition."
