This week we look at the aftermath of Paul’s first sermon in Acts (13:44-52). We see God bringing both eternal life and the ability to believe it to people with no rational reason to turn to this new Jewish sect. And we see others who thought they had God figured out missing his greatest gift - this is for us as a warning, and not to judge.
And what is happening with the Word of the Lord here? It confronts everyone and shifts everything. What is it?

As we continue in our study of Acts this week, we’ll look at Acts 13:13-43. Paul and Barnabas continue their missionary journey and much of the passage is taken up by a sermon Paul delivers to the people of Antioch in Pisidia. What we find in his sermon is a reminder of what makes Christianity so compelling, so unique, and so trustworthy compared to other worldviews and religious systems: the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The resurrection is the hinge of all human history, the great before and after. Before there was death and darkness, after is light and new life! As believers we are resurrected people, looking forward to eternity with Christ yet sure of that hope even now. This passage is an invitation to live in the confidence of the miracle of the resurrection.

Chapter 13 begins the gospel going to the end of the earth. For centuries prior to the book of Acts, the scriptures told us that God’s grand purpose was that all nations would praise Him and know Him. Jesus said that when he was lifted up, he would draw all peoples (different nations) to himself. Acts 13 tells us of the first missionary endeavor, which became the launching pad through which God would be praised by all nations. This is still God’s heart today. We still have many people groups who have never heard of Jesus, nor do they have scripture in a language they understand.

Chapter 12 of the Book of Acts wraps up with Herod dying, Saul and Barnabus completing their mission in Jerusalem and heading back to Antioch. Luke divides Acts into two parts and Chapter 12 is the end of the first portion. The good news of Jesus Christ dying and being raised from the dead as the ultimate sacrifice for sin has been proclaimed in Jerusalem and beyond, primarily through the leadership of Peter. The second portion of Acts will highlight Paul's missionary endeavors. As we recap the first 12 chapters to see how God has worked through His people, we see that the Word of God has increased and multiplied in 4 ways - the spoken word, the written word, the silent word, and the Living Word. It's as vital and vibrant today as it was for the early church. How can we as individuals and corporately continue to see God's word increase and multiply?

Acts 12:1-19 raises a natural question. The church prayed for both James and Peter, but James was killed by the sword, while Peter was miraculously delivered. Why did these two apostles receive such different outcomes when the same group of people were praying for them. These types of questions in our own lives can make it difficult to pray. We can feel discouraged. We can grow cynical. We can grow resigned to the fact that, God’s going to do what God’s going to do. Yet, even with the inevitable disappointment with James, the early church continues to fervently seek God in prayer. They pray for Peter. One of the things we learn from the early church was that prayer was so baked into their regular rhythms, that it wasn’t something that was contingent upon them getting the answer they wanted. While this didn’t necessarily make it easy when their prayers seemed to go unanswered, these rhythms did keep them in regular communion with God where they were constantly seeing answers to prayer.

God has worked in unmistakable ways to offer salvation for the Gentiles; therefore, the Church must follow suit. The Church doesn’t write the script; they follow the script. They Church doesn’t draw up the play; they run the play. When the church decides to become the scriptwriter rather than the script-follower, bad things happen.

For Missions Sunday, we’re going to begin to dive into the topic of “What is the Local Church’s Role in Missions?” Is it to meet as many physical needs as we can? Share the Gospel? Outreach? Send money to people who can do these things? This is a big question that we’re not going to get fully answered in one sermon. But at least we can start to think through the question as a church and what the Bible has to say about it. Recently, our Local and Go Global Mission Teams have started to try and rediscover what missions is, because it’s hard for us to discern what our role in Missions is if we don’t have a clear understanding of what Missions is.

The astonishing (and sometimes hard to believe) message of the Gospel is that it’s free. We may not offer money for it, but in what ways do we act like we need to earn God’s favor? In what ways do we seek to put God in our debt by our good works? In what ways do we think God owes us because of something we’ve done? We are reminded in today's passage, that the gospel is not for purchase. Instead, it is a free gift through Jesus’ costly purchase of us.

If you had just been arrested and imprisoned for speaking about Jesus, and then subsequently threatened not to speak any more about Jesus, what would your prayer be? This is the scene in Acts 4:23-31, but the early church prays for none of these things. In fact, out of the seven verses that their prayer spans, only two of those verses are even a petition to God. The first five verses have nothing to do with asking God for anything. When they finally get to their petitions, they’re not what we’d expect. The question this passage answers and what this podcast will answer is this: As the winds of fear and anxiety swirl and seek to blow over the early church, how is it that they are enabled to stand so boldly?

Pastor Dan Wilson will be preaching from Mark 15:16-32, we see Simon of Cyrene literally enact Jesus’ words about picking up one’s cross. Simon is seized and forced to carry Jesus’ cross. Simon quickly realizes that to be next to Jesus is to experience what Jesus did. While our natural preferences are to seek our comforts out, Jesus repeatedly reminds us that to follow him is to walk down the same Calvary Road he did. When life feels hard, when our comforts are stripped away, may we remember, this is how Jesus said it would be. And may we remember that as we lose our lives for his sake, we actually find our lives.

In this week’s passage, Mark 2:13-17, Jesus will face opposition because he keeps company with tax collectors and sinners. One of the virtues that made the early Christians so winsome and effective in leading people to Christ was that they were “in the world,” but not “of the world.” They didn’t pull back and separate, yet neither did they compromise their convictions. We see that with Jesus. There was no one with whom he refused to interact. There was no one who was too much of an outsider for him to engage. Yet, Jesus was purposeful in those interactions. He wasn’t lackadaisical with these interactions, but intentional.

Jesus’ priority was to preach God’s word. Jesus was not just concerned about broken bodies, but broken souls. His compassion was not less than healing broken bodies, but it was more than healing broken bodies. Compassion fuels mission. The Lord Jesus was the epitome of compassion. In Matthew 9:35-38, we see that what drew Christ’s compassion out was that the people were like a sheep without a shepherd. As new people in Christ, we are to clothe ourselves with Christ. Rootedness in Christ comes from knowing the worth of Christ. One huge remedy to standing firm and assured in Christ is that we don’t do it alone. In the animal kingdom, who typically gets picked off by the predator? The one who wanders from the pack. As the Colossians face their spiritual predators seeking to pick them off by deception, they will stave off these predators by being knit together with one another. They are to be like a quilt, whose individual squares have been knit together to into the fabric of one quilt.

Suffering and struggle are the pathway through which Christ is revealed. Paul’s rejoicing was enabled through what his suffering was being used to produce in others, which was Christ. Knowledge of God leads to bearing fruit for God. The end goal of knowledge is to display the worth of the Lord. The more we know about the Lord the more worth we ascribe to him. What Jesus is challenging here in this week’s teaching is the practice of being generous to others, with the hope that they in turn will be generous to you. The generosity of Jesus is shown not only in his attitude towards money and possessions, but in how we treat one another. Because we trust in the love and provision of God our Father, we are free to love even those who oppose us, and give to those who ask. Jesus’ words were meant to make us ask this question: “What kind of person is able to do these things?” Or, “What would have to be present in my life for me to be able to respond to requests for help like this?”

For the last several weeks, we’ve been talking about a God who is “With and For the City,” and reminding us of our call to be “With and For” our city as well. The last book of the Bible gives us a picture of a new city, where there is no more death, no more crying, no more pain (see Revelation 21:4). Isaiah gave us this same promise hundreds of years before Jesus walked on earth. Though the story of human cities pictured in the Bible and in world history beyond is a checkered one to say the least, God’s plan includes restored cities marked by His peace, life, and abundance. Constant in God’s plan is both a people—renamed and renewed—and a place—restored and made beautiful.

I love the imagery of how God’s Anointed (see Isaiah 61:1-2) is the agent of restoration, that leads to building a people who display the Lord’s splendor and glory. The opening words of the chapter may sound familiar, as they are the words that Jesus read when he began his public ministry.
Isaiah the prophet shifts his imagery quickly from oaks to a people that rebuild cities. Our faith is built on a strong foundation of righteousness, given to us by the righteousness of our Savior Jesus. But our faith is meant to be active, as we are called to rebuild, restore, and renew. Our eyes should be drawn to the places in our neighborhoods and cities where we see brokenness, and our feet should move to be a part of the restoration.

Isaiah 58 ends with a beautiful renaming of God’s people: Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. Have you ever been back to your hometown, for instance, and visited a place that you knew as a child to be abandoned, destroyed, or dilapidated? Then, when you visited years later, you saw it bustling with life, with restored streets and buildings? THAT image is what the prophet Isaiah is saying to God’s people. That is our calling. To be ambassadors for our cities, seeing God’s beauty and restoration reach into every pocket of our communities.

We begin a new series this week, entitled, “With and For the City,” looking at passages from the prophet Isaiah. What the prophet Isaiah will show us over the next several weeks, is that God looks to restore cities, and will one day bring the Shalom—the abundant peace and well-being of God—to a new heaven and new earth, marked by a “garden-city” in which God Himself will dwell.
This is not mere Bible study—it is a call for us as followers of Jesus to be “With and For” the city in which we dwell.

In Matthew 28, we are told that two women—Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary”—go to the tomb of Jesus after his death, where they encounter an angel who tells them that Jesus has risen from the dead. Then, Jesus himself appears to them. He simply says, “Greetings!” And the women fall down and worship him. Interestingly, the word “worship” is not found often in the New Testament. In the gospel accounts it comes mostly after Jesus has risen from the dead. It is the culmination of seeing the power and plan of God that cause people to bow down and worship. As we finish our series on a path of discipleship, may we realize that it after seeing Jesus as he fully is that will lead us to a posture, and a life, of worship.

Jesus said, “I have not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many.” Serving—and having an attitude of one who serves—is an integral part of what it means to follow Jesus. We learn things about ourselves, and others, and show the love of God through our service of others. In this week’s sermon, we will look at the attitudes that compete for that servant-attitude, and how Jesus redefined what greatness was for his disciples, and us.

This week in our second part of our series on the path of following Jesus, we will look at how Jesus said that holding to his teaching leads on a path to freedom. Where in your life do you feel trapped or held back, and how might learning from Jesus set you free?

Jesus said, “everyone will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.” We wonder if we truly embrace how true these words of Jesus are. Jesus is saying something remarkable here. How can we tell if someone is a follower of Jesus? By the way they love others. As we walk along this path of discipleship to Jesus, may we remember how important a community is, and how our love for one another makes a real impression on others.

How many of us have been at a high point, only to come crashing back to earth in spectacular fashion? If we embark on the adventure of following Jesus with our whole lives, undoubtedly we will have moments like these. Crystal-clear clarity followed by a fantastic fall from understanding. We hope to be a church that is making disciples—life-long learners and followers of Jesus. We began this series, called “Disciple Like Jesus,” to more deeply look at exactly how Jesus made disciples. After inviting people to follow, Jesus spent a significant amount of time teaching. His primary way of teaching was through parables. How might we put ourselves in a position regularly to truly listen to Him teach us?

Author and speaker Simon Sinek has a book entitled, Start With Why, which has ended up on both New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. The subtitle is: “How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action.” The premise is this: if you can communicate the “why” of your organization or cause, meaning its core purpose, its reason for being, then people can rally behind that purpose. Have you ever wondered about the “Why of Jesus?” This week’s passage from Luke 4 gives us a clear idea of why Jesus came, and can inspire us to live out his mission in the world.

Have you ever been a part of building something new, or planting something new? It is no secret that to do something that has not been done before requires tearing down or uprooting. That is difficult work. Sometimes the work of removing an old tree and its roots is much, much harder than the work of planting a new one. This week, we will see how God calls Jeremiah to be about uprooting and planting for what God wants to do in the world. And, this invites us to consider what new thing God wants to do in us!

This week, we will look at a heart-wrenching story. It is the story of Joseph, a man hated by his brothers, who sold him into slavery. However, that act led to Joseph being ultimately taken to Egypt, where he was elevated to a position of influence. That position ultimately led to him being able to save his family and a multitude of others from famine. Joseph sees the acts of his brothers being redeemed by God, who he sees as the One who really sent him to Egypt. Can we see, in the midst of our difficulties, the hand of Someone guiding us and sending us?

One of Jesus’ followers, named Thomas, said, “Unless I see and can touch where Jesus was wounded, I will not believe.” The Bible acknowledges how difficult it was, and is, to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead. Yet Jesus gave Thomas exactly what he needed to believe. This is wonderful news for all of us that struggle to trust in the truth of the good news that Jesus Christ is Risen. Jesus can answer whatever “unless” we might have.

On Palm Sunday we look at Jesus’ triumphant entry in Jerusalem. But his entrance is far from what the people expected—wanting a warrior king to be their champion. Instead, Jesus came as a figure of peace, a messiah for Israel and the nations. This passage has us ask how have we can be like the people, making God something He is not. Instead, let us look to the Prince of Peace whose good news is greater than anything we can imagine.

Most of us are living in that “in between” time with Jesus. We are going through something—a time of illness, diagnosis with waiting for treatment, uncertainty in work or relationship, financial struggles. And we may call out to Jesus, and it feels like he is staying put. Consider these words from James Baldwin: “The Lord never seems to get there when you want him, but when he arrives he’s always right on time.” (James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time)

What does the feeding of the 5,000 in John 6 have to tell us—about Jesus, and about us? For one, it shows us the abundant provision of Jesus. And, how we might seek to meet the tangible needs that we see around us. Not in a stingy way, but in an overflowing-love-of-God kind of way. The season of Lent, which simply means “springtime,” is the six and a half week period before Easter. This period allows for forty days of fasting, with Sundays excluded from the fast, and begins on Ash Wednesday. This is such a precious, humbling event in the life of a church. We want to honor and celebrate the fact that we serve a risen Savior. Led by leaders of the College, High School, and Jr. High ministries. The Gospel of John opens with a different Christmas story than the other gospels. It begins “in the beginning,” with John talking about a Greek philosophical concept called the Logos (Word). John claimed that the principle that organized and created everything became flesh and dwelt among us in Jesus Christ. This scandal of Christmas is that all the treasures of wisdom are found in Jesus. Where are we finding our wisdom?

One Bible Dictionary describes them in this way: ““Magi” originally referred to priests in Persia who were traditionally associated with secret wisdom, magic, and astrology. Why do you think these Magi are included in the story? Matthew’s gospel in particular wants to emphasize Jesus as the fulfillment of the Israelite hopes for a Messiah, so why include priests from another religion? This week, we will look at how God coming to earth in Jesus Christ upset the political power of the day. King Herod tried to deceive, and then used violence to get his way. We still live in a world dominated by deception and violence. But the power of the story of Christmas is that God’s will is still alive, for the Son of God still lives. And while we celebrate his birth every Advent season, we also know that He will come again to make all things new, restoring justice and bringing peace.

As we begin our Advent series, the intent is to see the far-reaching implications of the gospel: in God coming to us in Jesus Christ, there are reversals and restorations. The act of generosity is far more than meeting a tangible need, as important as that is. It’s actually a means by which God drives people into the central purpose of what they were created for: worship.God’s grace will abound towards us in our sacrifical generosity for the purpose of meeting tangible needs, and even more importantly for the purpose of meeting spiritual needs.

Is it enough to be generous? Or, is God interested in our attitude in our generosity as well? Paul challenges the believers in Corinth to finish the work they started, but also to have their willingness “match” their giving. It appears Paul is eagerly desiring that these believers’ hearts match their outward behaviors. In your relationship with Christ, do you see your attitude and behavior aligning like this? As we turn our focus to how generosity is growing in us as followers of Jesus, we’re going to take a look at a letter that Paul wrote to a church in the city of Corinth. While the Corinthian church excelled in many things, Paul challenges them here to “excel in the grace of giving.” What do you think happens to a group of people when they being to excel in generosity?

We revisit a chapter in the book of Jonah, and compare it to one in the book of Acts. One of the teachings we see in the Bible is that we have been blessed to be a blessing. We have been chosen to be messengers of good news to the world. We study the culture and world around us with a heart to understand the gods of our age. And then we aim to proclaim good news into a city that is seeking meaning and truth.

First Jonah is angry about God’s mercy, and now he is angry about a plant! If we are like Jonah, this passage reminds us that most often, we care about ourselves and our comfort. We might even believe God exists to make us comfortable. While God loves us dearly as His children, our comfort is not always His first priority.

Are you angry? What makes you angry? This week’s passage is about anger. Jonah’s great anger at God’s mercy. And God’s beautiful character being slow to anger, abounding in love. God’s question to Jonah—and to us—is a profound one. “Is it right for you to be angry?” I see this as an invitation from God to ask ourselves, what is it that really is causing our anger?

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Mercy can be thought of as pity or sympathy for someone’s suffering plus the desire to provide relief. Pity + action is mercy. And this is precisely what God has done for us, he sees us in this broken world and acted through His son to save us. Jesus reminds us with this beatitude of the extraordinary mercy the Father has shown us which should lead us to live mercifully to the world around us. Scripture reading is Matthew 5:7

After Sermon Reflection Scriptures:
Matthew 26:38-39 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.
Philippians 2:5-8 Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

As we take Jesus’ hard words at face value, they can unleash compassion. They can unleash pursuit. They can unleash mission. They can unleash a love that neutralizes fear. They can embolden us to humbly share with others. They can prompt us into godly urgency. If we push them down, then we enable ourselves to live a very safe, predictable Christianity that never leads us outside of the boat and onto the turbulent waves in order to rescue someone who is drowning and desperately in need of a life preserver.
