Welcome to The Finance Cafe, the business podcast for women entrepreneurs that breaks through the money taboo and explores what’s behind the numbers.
Join your hosts, founders of the financial literacy platform designed by women entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs, The Finance Cafe Shannon Pestun, Business Strategist and Former Banker and Shauna Frederick, Chartered Professional Accountant and CFO On the Go, every week as they dive into conversations about business and finance with women entrepreneurs and the experts that support them.
In this episode of The Finance Cafe Podcast, Dr. Rumeet Billan, an award-winning entrepreneur, learning architect, and humanitarian, joins Shannon Pestun to delve into the powerful themes of rewriting and redefining success on your own terms. As the CEO of Women of Influence+ and the Founder of Viewpoint Leadership, Dr. Billan brings a wealth of experience in transforming workplace cultures, fostering trust, and building resilience. Her research on Tall Poppy Syndrome and Canadian Happiness at Work has been instrumental in shifting conversations about workplace dynamics and women’s roles in leadership.
Together, Dr. Billan and Shannon explore the importance of context in shaping narratives around success and happiness. Dr. Billan shares how rewriting and redefining aren’t just about correcting the past—they’re about intentionally shaping the future. She emphasizes the significance of intersectionality and the need to empower women to define and achieve success on their own terms, rather than conforming to one rigid idea of what success or happiness should look like.
In addition to success, the conversation also touches on a crucial topic for women—financial wellness. Dr. Billan and Shannon highlight how women have been conditioned to believe that financial empowerment is out of reach, a myth that needs to be dispelled. Dr. Billan stresses the importance of breaking through these barriers, addressing the attitudes and behaviors around financial decisions, and understanding finances in a deeper, more personal context. Listeners will gain insights into how financial empowerment is essential not just for business, but for everyday life, and how empowering women with financial knowledge can lead to greater confidence and control over their futures.
This episode offers tools and insights to help women not only redefine success but also take control of their financial narratives, paving the way for meaningful and lasting impact in both their personal and professional lives.

04:56
“We want to show women they already have that capital, they already come with their own set of capitals and really have that abundance mindset and really make them realize that they are already rich in that wisdom capital, so for us that’s really one of the 3 pillars that we really chose to activate.”- Melodie

22:57
“Talking about money will help you gain an understanding of where have you arrived on your business path, how did you get here, and really embrace this new financial level by asking the right questions to the right people in order to start focusing on things that are really important to you that align with your values rather than putting all of your energy into growing a part of your business that is maybe not as important to you.” -Melodie

In this episode Shauna sits down with Sheena Brady, Founder of Tease, award-winning Social Entrepreneur, and Angel Investor to discuss the lessons she’s learned from having a banker advocate for her and her business.
Sheena's personal story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing natural health and healing after a decade-long career deeply entrenched in the 'hustle' mentality and the high-octane world of coffee culture within the hospitality industry. This relentless pursuit left Sheena with not only a profound yearning for genuine well-being but also a portfolio of challenges encompassing anxiety, digestive woes, and insomnia.
In 2013, fueled by her personal journey towards holistic health, Sheena carved her niche as the Founder & Tea Sommelier of tease. More than just a tea brand, tease embodies Sheena's mission to infuse wellness and beauty essentials with the enriching goodness of functional tea and botanicals while inspiring people to live and lead their lives consciously through intentional daily self care rituals. Today, tease caters to a loyal customer base around the globe.
While tease grew from a modest side hustle into a growing, established brand, the ascent was not without challenges that Sheena, as a woman Founder at the helm, confronted firsthand. Encounters with adversity as a female founder became the catalyst for a new chapter in her journey.
Recognizing that diverse women founders navigate even more arduous paths, in 2019 Tease amplified its social impact initiatives to confront the glaring gender inequities embedded in the entrepreneurial landscape. Thus, the inception of Founders Fund was the dawning of a mission-driven era. Born from the experiences of founders, for founders, Sheena & Tease Tea have raised and contributed an astounding $200,000 to date towards funding programming that empower women-owned enterprises. This effort is underpinned by barrier-free grant funding and mentorship that has impacted over 500 women founders.

In this episode, Shauna sits down with Laura Gassner Otting, Author, Catalyst, and Executive Coach to discuss passion vs purpose, comparing ourselves to others and how we can use this in a positive way, defining our own definition of success as women, and advice for women entrepreneurs around ambition.
Laura’s secret superpower is seeing your greatness and reflecting it back on you, so that you can get “unstuck” — and achieve extraordinary results.
A frequent contributor to Good Morning America, the TODAY Show, Harvard Business Review, and Oprah Daily, Laura’s 30-year resume is defined by her entrepreneurial edge. She served as a Presidential Appointee in Bill Clinton’s White House, helping shape AmeriCorps; left a leadership role at respected national search firm to expand a tech start-up; and founded, ran, and sold her own global search firm, partnering with the full gamut of mission driven corporate and nonprofit executives.
Laura is turned on by the audacity of The Big Idea and that larger-than-life goal you just can’t seem to shake. She’s an instigator, motivator, and provocateur, and she’s never met a revolution she didn’t like. Just ask her enduringly patient husband, two almost-grown sons, and two troublesome pups with whom she lives outside of Boston, MA.
Laura is the author of Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life (2019), which debuted at #2 on the Washington Post bestseller list (right behind Michelle Obama), has been translated into Arabic, Korean, Turkish, Portuguese, and German, and which Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts chose as one of her Favorite Books of 2019, as well as Mission-Driven: Moving from Profit to Purpose (2015). Her forthcoming book, Wonderhell, is being released on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

In this episode Shannon will sit down with Tara Adams, Founder of Abridge Consulting and Workplace Mental Health Specialist to discuss how our financial wellness and mental health are connected, why it’s so difficult to talk about money, why financial stress is found to be higher in women than men, what mental wellness warning signs to look out for & tips for building financial wellness as an entrepreneur.
Tara founded Abridge Consulting based on a simple, but not easy, goal - to get more people, more help, sooner. Tara believes we can all learn how to be a bridge between people struggling with their mental health and getting them the support they need and deserve. Abridge Consulting clients are organizations and teams who are ready to invest in their people, culture, and bottom line.
With a strong background in learning and facilitation and a passion for workplace mental health, Tara spent several years as a Corporate Wellness Manager. During that time, she championed workplace mental health and overall employee total health for 6,000 employees by building enterprise-wide strategies for mental, physical, emotional, and financial wellness. The results of her workplace mental health training program were closely measured and outperformed similar organizations across Canada positioning her as an industry leader in workplace mental health.
Tara calls herself a “relatable” role model who does the best she can to invest in her own mental, physical and sleep health but like most of us, she knows she can always do more. She’s a busy working mom of two, a previous semi-competitive tennis player and has big plans to conquer the amateur senior’s tennis tour someday.

In this episode co-founder of The Finance Cafe, Shauna Frederick, talks with fellow CFO, Winnie Leung of Moneris Solutions, about the importance of simplifying the numbers, including tips and advice for things to consider when looking for a payment/merchant provider and how it can benefit your business.
For the majority of women entrepreneurs ,the impetus to go into business is born because we have a solution to a problem that we have experienced and are passionate about. Because the purpose of our business isn't solely motivated by money this can translate into not "knowing" the numbers and understanding how they impact our businesses.

The full and equal participation of women in the economy is not just the right thing to do; it's the smart thing to do.
Studies show that by advancing gender equality and women's participation in the economy, Canada could add up to $150 billion in GDP. Only 16% of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses are owned by women, and the Government of Canada is working to change that.
The government is advancing women's economic empowerment with the first ever Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES), a more than $6-billion investment that aims to increase women-owned businesses' access to the financing, talent, networks and expertise they need to start up, scale up and access new markets.
In this episode, Shannon sits down with Minister Ng to talk about why Canada established a women’s entrepreneurship strategy, the need for gender focused policy versus gender mainstream policy, why Canada is seen as a leader in women’s entrepreneurship, and the important role that Canadian women play in our economy, communities, families and more.
The Honourable Mary Ng was first elected as Member of Parliament for Markham—Thornhill in 2017. She has previously served as Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade.
Minister Ng is a devoted community leader who has always believed in the power of public service. She has 20 years of experience in the areas of education, women’s leadership, job creation, and entrepreneurship.
Minister Ng immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong with her family, and grew up learning about the struggle and eventual success that many new immigrants experience in Canada.
Her years working for the Ontario Public Service, Ryerson University, and the Ontario Ministry of Education led to her being recognized as one of Canada’s top-performing public sector leaders. She later served as Director of Appointments for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Raising financial capital for a business is one of the biggest barriers we have to overcome as women entrepreneurs. Host, Shannon Pestun, sits down with Paulina Cameron, CEO of The Forum and discuss the changing landscape of women’s entrepreneurship, the barriers women confront on their entrepreneurial journey, and about how pitch competitions are creating more opportunities for women.
Paulina is a trailblazing leader, author, board member, advocate, mom, wife and CEO of The Forum. Paulina has been recognized as a Globe & Mail Changemaker 2022, recipient of the YWCA's Women of Distinction Award and has supported hundreds of entrepreneurs in launching their businesses. Love is in the air and here at The Finance Cafe its all love, all the time... for women entrepreneurs.
This week co-founder Shauna Frederick, is joined by Marcela Mandeville, Chair of WEOC Canada and CEO of Alberta Women Entrepreneurs who shares how the ecosystem is connecting, supporting and collaborating with women entrepreneurs.
Marcela has explored the world of business through a globally focused business undergraduate degree, designation as a Certified International Trade Professional and more than twenty years of global experience developing and implementing business strategies. A career highlight has been taking on leadership roles at Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) to support AWE’s goal to build stronger communities and economies through women’s participation in entrepreneurship.
Marcela believes strongly in continuous learning and contributing to the community.
Obviously we love talking about women's entrepreneurship at The Finance Cafe and just one of the reasons is because of the increase we've seen on women's entrepreneurship in Canada over the last 10 years, and especially over the last two. According to Stats Canada, there are currently more than 360,000 self-employed women in Canada.
What this says to us is that we have a growing network of women entrepreneurs to connect with, collaborate with and learn from.
This episode is all about connection, supporting, networking and why it's important to have more more than one source of capital to rely on in your business.
Speaking of connection and networking we want to send a big Valentines thank you to our sponsor, the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub.
Made up of 10 regional hubs, WEKH operates in both official languages and includes a network of over 250 organizations, reaching more than 100,000 women entrepreneurs.
WEKH is a part of the Government of Canada’s Women Entrepreneurship Strategy that aims to increase women entrepreneurs’ access to financing, talent, networks and expertise. Using a methodology developed by the Boston Consulting Group and the Cherie Blair Foundation (2019), it is estimated that closing the gender gap in entrepreneurship in Canada could add $41-$81 billion to Canada’s GDP

Last fall, Sara Blakely reminded us that an idea for a consumer packaged goods (CPGs) business can lead to a billion dollar opportunity for women entrepreneurs.
It's no secret that women-owned businesses are behind some of the most innovative consumer products on the market, are driving industry trends and reinventing product categories. But the path from product development to retail success can be a daunting one, particularly for women entrepreneurs who face increased barriers when accessing financial, social and entrepreneurial capital.
On this episode Shannon Pestun has a conversation with Felicia Lekan-Salami, entrepreneur and CEO of Milton Food Group. Milton Food Group is a health conscious snack company that is rapidly expanding its reach and extending innovation to introduce new products to the market.
Shannon and Felicia talk about expanding in the consumer packaged goods market, how to find an equity partner, strategies to capitalize on growth and how acquisition has been key to the growth of her company.
Felicia is a resourceful, strategic and energetic professional with over 20 years of experience helping multinational organizations make better business decisions that drive sustainable growth and profitability. She is a big 4 trained management consultant with experience in various industries and countries and has worked with clients that include Nestle, Unilever and Coca-Cola.
On top of being a busy entrepreneur, Felicia is also the Divisional Vice President – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at The Bay and Hudson's Bay Company.
Felicia firmly believes that people make a difference and together everyone achieves more. This is a sentiment that aligns so well with ours here at The Finance Cafe!

In part 2 of Shauna's conversation with Executive Coach and Entrepreneur Kristina Sammut, they get down to the nitty gritty with some tools to shift away from the money blocks and narratives that hold us back.
Kristina identifies some of the common challenges that she comes across in her work. She speaks to examples like:
what the impact can be if we aren't operating from a place of "due diligence",
how not having a proper client onboarding process can be a huge issue for women in pricing strategy,
how women often don't know how to charge more.
One of the other interesting topics Shauna and Kristin touch on is how women entrepreneurs can find it very difficult be vulnerable and ask the questions or state the problem they are having in their networks. Shauna says, "I've experienced this personally, you're sitting around a group of other entrepreneurs that you don't know, you want to ask the question, but there's this fear. But when we don't know what we don't know, we have to become very vulnerable and ask. Especially around finance when we've so often been taught that "you just don't ask that question".
Kristina explains how she uses a technique called "stem sentences" to help her clients overcome money blocks as well as what she calls "the classic t-bone exercise". An exercise where you write on one page everything you don't want, and on the other what you do want, from there you can see what you need next, to get to where or what you want.
Another interesting topic discussed in these last two episodes is the "Portfolio Career". Kristina believes it's the career of the next decade. In the article she references (linked here), "a portfolio strategy allows us to design a career and life that leverages our passion with our purpose. This also allows us to target strategies for career growth and fulfillment, while taking risks and still maintaining financial security."

At The Finance Cafe we educate and elevate women entrepreneurs through our cornerstone Financial Literacy Program, our conversations, and our community. We are changing the narrative around money and equipping women entrepreneurs to feel capable, confident, and connected.
Host, Shauna Frederick is joined by Executive Coach and Founder of Frontier Leadership, Kristina Sammut.
Kristina helps women to negotiate their worth, clarify who they are and what they have to offer so they can make an impact as future leaders.
A lack of financial literacy and access to funds are often the biggest barriers women entrepreneurs encounter. Shauna and Kristina discuss how being aware of some of the systemic biases, along with personal ones, lead to creating these money blocks.
In part 1 of this conversation, they talk candidly about the gender gap, providing context around how it is connected to the money blocks some women entrepreneurs experience. With a recognized wage gap of approximately 58% between men and women entrepreneurs it is not hard to make the connection. This discussion provides valuable insights and a refreshing narrative to this important, and nuanced issue. Kristina digs into the belief that by shifting the narrative around money, entrepreneurs can use money as a tool to transform their business.
Next week in Part 2, the conversation explores how to move through these money blocks and work towards embracing your full value, an integral step towards achieving your personal and business goals and closing the gap.
At The Finance Cafe we educate and elevate women entrepreneurs through our cornerstone Financial Literacy Program, our conversations, and our community. We are changing the narrative around money and equipping women entrepreneurs to feel capable, confident, and connected.

This episode of The Finance Cafe Podcast is all about risk.
If you are like most people, the idea of risk is scary and something we'd typically avoid. But as this week's guest, Geeta Tucker, President and CEO of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Manitoba, says, "the very nature of entrepreneurship is risky", so we need to learn to get comfortable with it.
Geeta and Host, Shannon Pestun, breakdown why it is so important for entrepreneurs to not just take risks but embrace them. They share how you can overcome the imposter syndrome and fear that often keeps us playing small, preventing us from seeing ourselves and our businesses reach it's full potential.
Listen in as these experts unpack and explain the several different types of risk that an entrepreneur may experience in their journey like financial risk, repetitional and situational risk.
Most importantly, they share strategies to help you create a business environment where you feel safe and comfortable with risk and uncertainty. They explain how how you can validate and evaluate those strategies so you feel confident taking the risks you need to build your business and succeed.

The resources you need to empower you in your life and business.
A pure service business is one in which the service is the primary entity that is sold rather than a tangible item that people can physically see and touch. A business with a physical product, or products, can find pricing much more straightforward as there are many hard costs associated with producing and getting a product to market, then in a service based business
Women are also more likely to be in a professional service industry such as retail, health care or education. Did you know self-employed women struggle twice as much as men when it comes to setting rates?
In this episode host, Shauna Frederick, is joined by Founder and Managing Lawyer, Evelyn Ackah of Ackah Business Immigration Law. After 12 years of practicing law on Bay Street in Toronto, Evelyn moved to Calgary in 2008 and launched her firm in 2010. She understands first hand the unique challenges that having a service based business presents and the gender barriers faced as a women entrepreneur.

In this episode, Shannon sits down with Patrice Mousseau, CEO and Founder, to talk about the journey from her crockpot in the kitchen, to a global stage.
Patrice is a conscious entrepreneur and the owner/creator of Satya Organic Skin Care, a skincare company that delivers NPN-approved, USDA Certified Organic products to serve those with sensitive skin conditions.
For years, Patrice was a news anchor for leading television and news stations in Canada, but that all changed when her baby girl developed eczema at only 8-months old. Watching her baby suffer was the worst feeling in the world. When her doctor only prescribed steroids, Patrice researched scientific literature and traditional medicines and the formula that she created in her kitchen crock pot cleared Esme’s skin in just two days.
Satya has since helped tens of thousands of people around the world access clean, effective skin relief, and is sold globally online and in over 900 retailers across Canada including Whole Foods, Indigo and The Bay.

In this episode, Shannon sits down with Michéle Soregaroli, Co-Founder, CEO and Master Certified Coach at Transformation Catalyst Corp to talk about how to use differentiation to increase market share.
Michéle helps clients generate significant financial results by giving entrepreneurs the perspective they need to challenge business paradigms, become industry leaders, and champion excellence in their industry.
What is differentiation? In business strategy terms, differentiation refers to the principle of setting your company apart, a way to stand out and distinguish your business from others and give people a reason to choose your company or product over another.
In this episode our goal is to help you understand how differentiation is tied to your bottom line.

Here at The Finance Cafe, we’re changing the way we talk about finance and empowering women entrepreneurs to see their business in a new light – one story and one number at a time.
Women are more likely than men to be perfectionists, holding themselves back from answering a question, applying for a new job, asking for a raise, negotiating a contract, until they’re absolutely 100 percent sure they can predict the outcome. Women tend to apply for a promotion only when they met 100 percent of the qualifications. in contrast to men who will apply when they met just 50% of the qualifications.
In this episode Shauna and Shahr Savizi, co-founder of Fuckup Nights YYC, sit down to talk about how successful entrepreneurs view failures and how a shift in mindset can view failures as something to learn from rather than something to be afraid of.
Fuckup Nights is a global movement and a speaker series that shares stories of professional failure. Each month, in events across the globe, we get three to four people to get up in front of a room full of strangers to share their own professional fuckup. The stories of the business that crashes and burns, the partnership deal that goes sour, the product that has to be recalled, we tell them all.

For any business owner, money is more than just the bottom line.
Businesses don’t start without money. They don’t grow without money. And they don’t survive without money.
For many women, money is the last thing we want to talk about. According to a recent report by Merrill Lynch 61% of women would rather talk about their own death than money.
As entrepreneurs, every financial decision we make along our business journey has a business and personal financial impact. Our thoughts and attitudes affect our behaviour around money. But have you ever stopped to think about how these might be impacting your ability to grow your businesses?
There’s plenty of reasons we need to overcome the money taboo, and start talking about what money means - in our lives and in business.
In this episode, Shannon sits down with Taunya Woods Richardson, Serial Entrepreneur, Financial Strategist and Money Mentalist to discuss why money is so hard to talk about, the importance of developing a healthy money mindset, the ways we sabotage our success and why we need to change the money conversation for women entrepreneurs. We talk about your money mindset as a tool to build a strong, healthy, and profitable business.

Welcome to the Finance Cafe, the business podcast for women entrepreneurs that breaks through the money taboo and explores what’s behind the numbers.
Join your hosts (founders of the financial literacy platform designed by women entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs, the Finance Cafe) Shannon Pestun, Business Strategist and Former Banker and Shauna Frederick, Chartered Professional Accountant and CFO On the Go every week as they dive into conversations about business and finance with women entrepreneurs and the experts that support them.
For Shannon and Shauna, financial management is more than numbers. It’s about the combination of our lived experience, skills, attitudes and behaviours and how these come together to shape the financial decisions we make along our entrepreneurial journeys. It’s about uncovering the story of our businesses, being empowered by our decisions and unlocking our full potential as entrepreneurs.
We both partnered up and founded the e-Learning platform, The Finance Cafe, through a shared passion to help drive women’s entrepreneurship in Canada.
As women are often faced with barriers when accessing entrepreneurial support, we wanted to create a space for women to access resources and guidance regarding their finances. Furthermore, we hope The Finance Cafe can be a place for women to find the confidence to tackle their business from a financial perspective and build a healthy relationship with their money.
With our combined experience and expertise in the field of finance, we have seen first-hand the number of women who feel financial management is a huge source of stress.
Have you ever been scared to discuss your financial goals? Have you ever been overwhelmed looking at your finances and expenses and unsure of how to create a financial strategy?
Well, you are not alone.
Many women have questions on what their finances mean, and many are simply too afraid to bring their concerns up.
Did you know that the majority of women (61%) would rather talk about their own death, than talk about money?
How alarming is this! It is unfortunately not uncommon for women to feel uncomfortable talking about their finances, and many of us have been conditioned to feel this way…
This podcast and our e-learning platform serve to help you grow your financial literacy and your business!
Financial literacy is the foundation to your success as an entrepreneur. When we don’t know what our financials are telling us, it’s hard to trust that we’re making the right decisions for our companies!
From knowing how to develop your financial business plan, to managing, budgeting, and investing your capital, The Finance Cafe wants to help you feel more in control of your business and where you want it to go. Women should feel excited and empowered to understand the ins and outs of their business, not afraid.
We want to inspire new confidence in female entrepreneurs to tackle their complex financial decisions, and here at The Finance Cafe, you will have the opportunity to explore your financial knowledge and leave with less doubt and more trust in your business’ success!
