A rail trail in West Virginia holds dark secrets within twin tunnels outside an old ghost town that was once along Beetree Run. There are spirits there . . . Eaton and Lost Tunnels stand side by side. One is along the rail trail. The other is sealed and closed. Both are haunted. Nowadays, you can walk through this more recent #21 North Bend Rail Trail tunnel. It is this newer tunnel next to the old one where some have run into ghosts, although others attest the older one is haunted, too. With all the hype the Silver Run Tunnel gets with its white-gowned, golden-slippered phantom, it is no wonder that Eaton and Lost Tunnels get a lesser reputation for haunting. Yet they are. And there are plenty of reasons they have ghosts. From rockfalls to train wrecks and a town epidemic to being hit by a train, nearly 30 deaths have occurred nearby and within the tunnel. Airplane Hollow in Wayne National Forest in the Hocking Hills Region of southeastern Ohio is home to a legend of a ghostly plane and its passengers. May 16, 1941 - A legend comes from the area just outside Nelsonville and Carbon Hill, Ohio, about a military plane wreck during a horrible storm on May 16,1941 and the strange things that followed.
I want to share this story with you on this stormy eve before the mysterious and haunting event, which was told to me by some folks whose families have lived in the Carbon Hill/Nelsonville mining communities of southeastern Ohio for well over a hundred and twenty years. The story happened to them, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. There’s an old train bed deep within the forests of southeastern Ohio within the Hocking Hills, a remote path found by taking buckled pavement streets and sketchy gravel roads. The tracks were built in the 1850s for the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad. They passed through coal mining towns like Hope Furnace Station, Moonville, Ingham Station, Kings Station, and Mineral City. When a young man was killed walking these tracks on a lonely stretch of railroad, a ghost began to show up near an old train tunnel. This is the story of the Eight Foot Ghost of King Tunnel along the Moonville Rail Trail.

Winter Hike in the Hocking Hills is coming on January 20, 2024. (Find more info here: The Hocking Hills) Those hiking the trail during the event may come upon some spirits. Of course, Old Man Retzler and his baying hound are known to show up at Old Man’s Cave, and the Pale Lady follows hikers at Ash Cave. But between the two areas,the trail will lead along Queer Creek and to Cedar Falls, where ghosts are said to tarry. Their peculiar screams are explained as this--
In the early 1800s, a mill powered by the waters of QueerCreek sat on the rim of Cedar Falls. Nearby was a massive beech tree with words engraved in its ancient trunk, “This is the road to hell, 1782.”

The Y-City Cryptid Festival at Zane’s Landing Park in Zanesville, Ohio, is coming up on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This family-friendly event is a mix of cryptid creatures near Muskingum County and pop culture. There will be craft vendors, various other vendors, food trucks, art, a beer garden, and much more, including me with my books to sell. When most think of local cryptids, they think of Bigfoot orGrassman. In years of old in Zanesville, this story was told around the hearth and based on old folklore of a creature called Tailypo and what happens if you take something that is not yours!

The George Washington Heritage Trail makes its way through 3 counties in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, where travelers can visit interesting historical places and follow in the footsteps of the first president. Along its path is a haunting in a quiet little cemetery in Berkeley Springs that is nestled beneath trees and surrounded by quaint homes. Sometimes your past comes back to haunt you. A man and horses haunt a rock shelter off a lonely stretch of dirt-gravel road at the head of a valley. He died many years ago, and the reason for this haunting might have something to do with the dead man’s deeds in life.

The Abandoned: Pennsylvania's Abandoned Turnpike and Sideling Tunnel may not be as deserted as people think. The old turnpike is on many people’s bucket lists to visit, although few have the guts to take this forsaken post-apocalyptic-looking road and follow it through an abandoned tunnel that is 1.3 miles long, pitch-black in some places, and just plain creepy. However, it is not enough that it appears isolated and friendless. There are things of the supernatural, too, that lurk here. Take a ride with me along this abandoned highway and maybe add it to your bucket list. Or come face to face with the supernatural within.

Something peculiar lurks in a wild pocket of overgrown scrub meadows mixed with deep, young woodland in Belmont County, Ohio. It is just off Interstate 70, and those who pass along the highway usually sense that there is more to the gutted terrain than meets the eye, more than just the strip mine that flourished greedily on the land. It was as if when peeling back the flesh of the terrain, then gouging out the soul of the land, something wicked was freed from the bowels of the earth. Something long buried. Something that should never return. Something so dreadfully evil, it still walks as if the land beneath its feet is still quite dead. And it still thrives there . . .that thing in Egypt Valley that got dug up.

People have been crossing paths with hairy bipedal creatures for centuries. Mostly described as human-like, over 7 feet, hairy, and foul-smelling. When conversations arise over the big hairy creature’s prime territory in the tri-state area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, Salt Fork State Park is nearly always brought up. It always seems appropriate to feature some theme-based, folklore-related post for each holiday. Most are easy to come by like redeeming ghosts on Christmas Eve, dead, angry lovers on Valentine’s Day, and Halloween is a no-brainer because it celebrates every kind of ghost story, folktale, and urban legend. However, Easter has always eluded me, and over the years, I have managed to sidestep it completely. This time is different, though, because I discovered a most frightening legend, but with a little twist. Full disclosure—the tale would not have much to do with the Easter holiday if it were not for the mythical mammal involved mostly because it originated in October of 1970—This is The Legend of Bunny-Man of Fairfax County, Virginia.

Today’s story is Little Lost Ghost of Bluff Mountain, about a boy who disappeared into the forest, never to return . . . alive. But now he comes back in ghostly form.
It is one of the stories (about Ottie Cline Powell) that I'm working on for my newest book on Appalachian ghost hikes. And yes, I hike all the trails in my books. You can visit the site. I did. It is along the Blue Ridge Parkway with parking at Punchbowl Mountain Overlook. The trail is 2.0 miles, a rugged and strenuous uphill mountain hike on the way up. If you go, take a short side trip to Punchbowl Shelter. A sign will lead you there. This is one of the places the little ghost is seen.

The Haunted Stump was passed along in the 1953 story by Erasmus Foster Darby. It is one of the creepier bits of folklore and comes from the area that is now Pike Lake State Park in Ohio. You can read my version in Ohio Ghost Stories, The Classics.

Traditional Christmas in Victorian England was held around the fire at night, telling the most horrifyingly morbid of ghost stories. So in celebration of those old-time traditions, here is an ageless ghost story I’ll share with you that happened in a tiny community called Fallsville, which is now little more than a ghost town located in the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Fallsville Wildlife Area. It is about a ghostly apparition that would appear in December in an old mill town.

The North Bend Rail Trail in West Virginia stretches 72 miles along an old, abandoned railroad with 36 bridge crossings and 13 tunnels along its passageway. It’s a beautiful place to hike and bike . . . mostly. However, it also has some dark and spooky settings on its path. Among its spookier sites are two haunted tunnels secreted along the abandoned stretch of railway between the old oil boom and railroad towns of Walker and Petroleum.
You can find the two tunnels, Eaton Tunnel and the hidden Lost Tunnel along the West Virginia Rail-Trail after a short gravel backroads drive, and perhaps run into the ghostly crew of long-dead miners still working. After taking the path from the parking area, you will come upon the Eaton Tunnel. After passing through, look for a rugged path on your left and follow it. The Lost Tunnel is sealed off from the curious. However, you can peer into a small opening and perhaps hear the ghosts of its past within.
