Hello Everyone! Welcome back to another episode of UC Berkeley: Our Story. Today, we sat down with Andrew Sharo, who is a 6th year PhD student studying Biophysics here at Cal. Andrew talks about his research focus which consists of investigating the study of genetic origins of rare diseases. In addition, our guest discusses about his engagement in animal rights movement and shares a wild story about a time when his active involvement to fight animal cruelty almost landed him in a prison. Moreover, Andrew shares his experiences as a Graduate Student Instructor for MCB 102, an upper division Biochemistry course offered here at Cal which is renown for being challenging with harsh grading curves. He gives a deeper insight into some of the systemic problems that further discourage under-represented people of color away from STEM and how we, as the younger generation of students, can push for change and combat these issues.

The goal and mission of the podcast is to integrate the community together by having guest speakers share their experiences and journeys in times of discomfort. In addition, a goal of ours was to share the peoples’ narratives and unveil who is behind the University of California, Berkeley.
