The fishermen of Burano are as special as the region itself. Whilst the creep of climate change, the demands of faster life and the inevitbable costs of being an artisan all impact their life, they are amongst the most passionate, enthusiastic and committed people I have met in the seafood industry. Fisherman Massimo Tagliapietra and artist Allison Zurfluh are locals from the island of Burano, the epicentre of artisanal fishing in the Northern area of the Venetian lagoons.

Coffs Harbour on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales is home not only one of the most important fishing cooperatives but is also the home port of Geoff Blackburn, lifetime fisher, Chairman of Ocean Watch and a 2022 Australian Seafood Industry Hall of Fame inductee. The regal looking, fast-swimming Spanish mackerel, is one of the fish at the top of the food chain, its sleek, powerful torso has the look of a fighter jet, built for speed with the persona of an aggressive hunter. It’s caught using hook and line trolling techniques, and its quality is generally excellent as a result. Mackerel fishers are among the most colourful on Australian waters. Fishing the tropical waters of Northern Australia, they spend long stionts at sea, often tracking schools of these hardy fish for months on end, spending long hours under the searing sun in humid conditions.  Bruce, Wildcard Davey is himself a legend. A fiercely proud, third generation professional fisher who started his career at 16 years old, in 1975, following his father and mother and Grandfather into the world of fishing.  His love of fishing, his family and his beloved Spanish mackerel makes him a truly unique character in Australia’s fishing history.

Fishing has been woven into the fabric of coastal communities throughout history. For hundreds of years, people have relied upon the resources that were bountiful around the coast of Australia, and over time, people built family businesses around commercial fishing and seafood production.Today, commercial fishing in the Australia provides sustainable seafood to consumers across the world. The Coorong is a unique and beautiful wilderness. For that reason it is of inestimable value to South Australia It is an elemental region, a place of wind and water and vast skies, of sandhill and tussock, lagoon and waterweed, stone and scrub.Fishing in the lower Murray Lakes and Coorong region has been documented from as early as 1846.From a peak of some 150 fishers in the mid 20th century, currently there are 37 licenses. The fishery retains an owner operator policy to ensure that those who understand the fishery and the environment are the ones who catch the fish. It is this that makes the Lakes and Coorong Fishery in South Australia so unique.Today the Coorong also has a 47,000 hectare National Park which is not only wild but isolated and remote, the same could be said of the small group of artisan fishers working these waters.Husband and wife team, Glen and Tracey Hill operate Coorong Wild Seafoods, they fish using low impact methods and are truly committed to working with the environment they are in.https://www.coorongwildseafood.com.auFollow Fishtales, a Seafood Podcast on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/fishtalesseafoodpodcast/Follow John Susman https://www.instagram.com/fisheads/?hl=enFollow Rob Locke (Executive Producer)https://www.instagram.com/foodwinedine/Follow Huck (Executive Producer)https://www.instagram.com/huckstergram/LISTEN TO OUR OTHER FOOD PODCASTShttps://linktr.ee/DeepintheWeedsNetwork
