In the midst of blackouts & brownouts, California announces they will ban the sale of non-electric vehicles by 2035. California has had wildly inefficient power grids and refuses to use carbon-based energy to subsidize their lack of power and inability to store energy. At the same time, the charging stations for EVs and lubricants for wind-powered mechanisms rely on carbon. Is this promise to eradicate non EVs just political grandstanding or based in the science? Will it significantly reduce carbon emissions? Will it negatively affect our quality of life--particularly for those in the lower & middle-class? Somehow this episode got lost in the ether and never made it to our podcast platforms, so here it is!! Ryan & Josh review the history of voting rights and regulations in the US as congress continues to "debate" more laws related to voting. Yes, this was timely back when Senate Democrats were pushing looser restrictions on voting (although midterms are coming up and they will probably start pushing that again).
Obviously this will be wayyy more entertaining than your million-year old politicians pretending to serve you, so strap in! Josh gives a very thorough overview of the history of voting rights, obstacles, and racism while Ryan makes sure he doesn't go too far out there and claim things that are not supported by the data. $87 Billion is earmarked for "tax revenue loss recovery efforts" by Senate Democrats. The bill also has restrictions of fixing "fair" medical prices. Democrats pass a MASSIVE spending bill in the Senate with Kamala Harris as the tie-breaker vote. It's got so much jammed into it that we need multiple segments to cover it all. Join Ryan as we unpack whats in this bill and what exactly it will do. This episode covers Sections 1 & 2: the tax reforms and tax increases Democrats need to fund the rest of this 755 page bill. These sections of the bill address raised taxes on corporations, raised taxes on individuals (not just the ultra wealthy), and adjusted taxes on stock exchange. The burning question as we read this: why are we raising taxes in the middle of a recession?? Tune in and help decide whether this bill will actually reduce inflation.

Boldly going where several podcasts have gone before, we discuss the privatization vs public exploration of space. Throughout history most government missions have focused on exploration, research, and technological advancement rather than resource gain. Exploration missions and R&D missions can take decades to pay off if they ever do. In this sense space efforts for private companies have been lacking in the past, but now three major industries drive private efforts. Satellites, Tourism, and Mining.
If you know nothing about the current trajectory of space exploration on a global scale, this is a great place to start!

Is healthcare a human right? California recently explored this idea. We discuss the failed California proposal for a state-funded single payer healthcare system. Two bills were proposed: one to create the system called California Guaranteed Health Care for All and a separate bill to fund it.
The bills died in the senate but would have cost between $314 billion and $391 billion annually. The plan was to finance the bill through a drastic hike in tax on businesses, workers and high earners.

House Democrats (Led by Speaker Pelosi) are determined to pass the $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill AND the $3.5 trillion "Build Back Better" package as one giant bundle. They refuse to call for a vote on these issues individually.
The infrastructure bill received bipartisan support (from both Democrats & Republicans) but progressive democrats in the House refuse to vote in favor of the infrastructure bill unless senate Democrats pass the Build Back Better (aka human infrastructure) bill.
Senators Manchin (WV) and Cinema (AZ) are opposed to the $2.5 trillion "Build Back Better", knocking the Senate Democrat vote count down to 48. They need at least 50 to pass.
Sen. Manchin stands by the original deal he signed with senate majority leader Chuck Schumer which outlined $1.5 trillion in spending -- any additional spending would require means-testing (proof of its necessity and correct allocation/use).
Senators Manchin & Cinema face mounting pressure from the progressives in their party and President Biden to cave and vote in favor of the $5 trillion budget package.

"Right to repair" laws propose that companies should not be able to prevent owners from repairing their property by making it difficult to do so.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is a clause that prevents the social media oligarchs like Twitter, Facebook, Google, and YouTube from being held liable for curating the content on their platforms and preventing certain information from seeing the light of day. Its general design protects all those who post on the internet from being held liable for the comments others might leave on their content, but it has not been revised in 20+ years.

The 2,702 page, multi-trillion dollar “Budget Reconciliation Package” proposed by House Democrats includes the annual infrastructure and budget reconciliation bills, as well as a "human infrastructure" bill. They seek to address innovation, buildings, transportation, utilities, and in-home care. The human infrastructure portion of the bills include federal programs such as dental and vision additions to the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), universal pre-k, child tax breaks, incentives for renewable energies and electric vehicles, and free community college at the national level.
In this episode we dive headlong (Scrooge McDuck style) into the specifics of the bill and unpack where some of the tax dollars will be going. We discuss how this bill might get funded, debate whether the proposed programs will be sustainable and beneficial, and sift through some of the strange additions to the bill--like the $50 million for “Strategic innovation for revenue collection” which is a fancy committee to figure out how to get more taxes.
