Parents know how challenging it can sometimes be to get their kids interested in volunteering or otherwise becoming more engaged in the community. And yet, a youth-oriented volunteer program run by the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation has managed to do just that in one short year – all during the restrictions and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In fact, other volunteer groups and non-profits have been knocking on the foundation’s door to learn more about how they too can up their own youth engagement game.

The firefighters standing in front of Peace Arch Hospital on an autumn day last year weren’t there to respond to an emergency, but they were there to respond to an urgent need. Instead of ladders, hoses, and other firefighting equipment, they had brought a large cheque – large in physical size, large in dollar amount, and very large in terms of heart and commitment to the local communities they serve.
They were firefighters from the Surrey and White Rock communities, men and women who know all too well the mental toll that comes from being first on the scene of extreme emergencies that most of us will never encounter. The generous gift they brought to Peace Arch that day in November was in support of an issue at the forefront of the firefighters’ philanthropy as they witness their colleagues often struggle with the emotional demands of the job.
The issue was mental health. And the cause? The hospital’s new Mental Health Care and Substance Use Zone. But why did the Surrey firefighters choose Peace Arch Hospital as the recipient of such a large gift? And why is supporting mental health so important to them and other first responders in the region?
We’ll answer those questions and more in this episode of Power to Heal. You’ll also learn how the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation reaches out to community partners like the Surrey firefighters in order to provide better health care for everyone in the White Rock/South Surrey area.

A perfect storm has descended on hospital emergency rooms. The shortage of family physicians that was apparent before the pandemic has worsened since COVID-19, with many medical doctors taking early retirement or switching career paths due to exhaustion and burn out. With walk-in clinics now booked up days in advance, many people seeking non-critical medical care are turning to their local hospital’s ER.
However, once there they quickly discover the chances of seeing a doctor right away are slim. In fact, their wait time could stretch into hours and hours. That’s because, like their family practice counterparts, hospital staff – especially ER doctors and nurses – are resigning, retiring, or taking sick leave in record numbers. For many, the deciding factor is the increasing amount of abuse directed their way from frustrated and angry patients spending hours in a crowded waiting room to see a physician.
Are there other options than the ER or overbooked family physicians for those with non-critical medical needs? And what’s it actually like on the frontlines of healthcare as already-stretched facilities struggle with staff shortages and increasing demand?
To find out, host Wayne Cox speaks with two doctors who understand only too well how the shortage of MDs and nurses is leading some people to seek non-emergency medical help in crowded ER departments – where they are faced with lengthy wait times to see a physician:

On this episode, you’ll meet 27-year-old Logan, an employee of the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation who recently experienced the hospital through the lens of being a patient herself.
Logan’s dramatic, sometimes frightening story begins with a mysterious ailment causing pain in her hip and leg. A medical imaging scan would likely reveal the problem, but as her condition worsens, she comes up against a harsh reality found in many hospitals: old imaging equipment, prone to breakdowns and too expensive to replace on already-stretched budgets.
We’ll take you through Logan’s agonizing wait as she becomes increasingly worried about her condition, and how, despite running around the clock with a talented and dedicated team, the Peace Arch hospital imaging department simply can’t give her the information she needs fast enough.
“My world stopped” is how Logan describes the moment an early-morning phone call from her doctor brought her the results of the scan she eventually found elsewhere. Surgery was needed – and needed now.
Meanwhile, Logan’s mom Carrie, who was set to provide care for her daughter post-surgery, has a sudden flare-up of her Crohn’s disease. As a result, Carrie cannot look after her daughter – and now finds herself on a long wait list for her own medical scans.
