This week, we continue our journey through the Old Testament as we follow the reign of The Sermon on the Mount begins with the Beatitudes, and then Jesus uses salt and light to describe his disciples so that they will be seen to reflect glory to God. Have you seen the salt and light in the people who worship in our service each Sunday? Salt and light are not opposites, remember. Just which ones are salt and which ones are light - or maybe both? Join us in worship as we explore these questions. See you Sunday, in person or online!

This week, we continue our journey through the Old Testament as we follow the reign of King Solomon during the building of the Temple. Solomon had promised to build the Temple as a place of prayer and sacrifice in Jerusalem, and also as a home for the Ark of the Covenant. This week, we reenter the story as the Temple is completed and dedicated. And Solomon does something surprising in this dedication - he opens the Temple for foreigners to pray too. We will explore this story in a sermon based on selections from 1 Kings 8 (including verses 1, 6, 10-12, 22-30. and 41-43). See you Sunday, in person or online!

This week, we continue our into the Old Testament as we explore the start of King Solomon’s reign. Solomon was David’s son, and was anointed by his father to become king. Things didn’t start so smoothly with Solomon’s reign – but then God spoke to Solomon in a dream and asked what he wanted most. Solomon thanked God for making him king in place of David, and asked for an understanding mind to govern his people and discern right from wrong. God was pleased, because Solomon did not ask for something for himself but instead thought of his people first. If God came to you in a dream, what would you ask for , and how would you use such an amazing gift? We will explore these questions and more in a sermon based on 1 Kings 2: 10 – 12 and 3:3 – 14. This week, we take a journey into the Old Testament with Elijah. Elijah is at the end of his rope and is ready to give up. He is overwhelmed and discouraged. We’ve all been there – the journey is too long, or the ask is just too big. We are not alone; while we may not see God’s provision, we find that our needs will be met. Join us Sunday as we hear how God finds and cares for us even in our darkest times. This Sunday’s sermon will be based on 1 Kings 19:4-8. See you Sunday, in person or online!

We’ve all heard the wonderful Scripture, “Create in me a clean heart”. This week, we join the Psalmist in reaching out for the Mercy and Grace of God. We ask for forgiveness of our Sins – a topic that we Disciples don’t like to talk about much. We do not have to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps when we mess up. God is there for us. We don’t have to do it alone. Join us this week as we hear the Grace-filled words of the Psalmist in a sermon based on Psalm 51: 1-12.

This week’s parabolic story of seeds and the harvest leads us directly to Jesus’ comparison of the kin-dom of God to a mustard seed. Scholar Don Saliers tells us that It builds upon the earlier, more extensive parable of the sower and the harvest. There are clues in the plant that grows so large from so tiny a seed. We marvel that birds come next in the shade of this spacious dwelling – so shall the reign of God be. The kin-dom and faith are all about God’s grace. What is God’s kin-dom like? To what shall we compare it? Rev. Teresa will help us hear the path that Mark leads us down as we place ourselves in the middle of these parables in a sermon entitled, “Small Beginnings Can Yield Great Outcomes,” based on Mark 4: 26-34.

This Sunday we will welcome Rev. David Kenley as our guest preacher. David is a hospice chaplain, and has preached at LFCC before. He will be preaching a sermon based on Luke 7: 1-10. According to the prophet Joel, God would one day empower all classes of the community to become prophets by pouring out the Spirit in a manifestation of God in wind and fire, so that all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Christians are blessed by the Holy Spirit, the fruits of which are wisdom and love. Breathe in this Spirit and proclaim it to people who speak all sorts of different languages. Surprisingly, you’ll find that they understand. Join us this Sunday as Rev. Teresa challenges us to live into the promise that Christ is present and alive in our midst. Her sermon is based on Acts 2: 1 – 21.

Have you ever wondered why Jesus chose 12 apostles? It wasn’t an arbitrary decision; the 12 apostles represented the 12 Tribes of Israel. When Judas died after betraying Jesus to the Jewish authorities, the group of apostles was incomplete. This week, we will take a look at the story of how the apostles chose someone new to complete the group. We’ll also consider how the apostles narrowed down the options, and we’ll wonder about why women weren’t considered. Join us on Sunday as Rev. Diane shares a sermon titled "Completing the Circle" based on Acts 1: 15-17 and 21-26.
We will also celebrate mothers, grandmothers, and all other women who provide mothering in our lives during worship. Please See you Sunday, in person or online!

Most of us have heard the Greek word for Love – Agape. According to Biblical scholar David S. Cunningham, this type of Love is a theological virtue, an excellence of character that God has by nature and in which we participate by grace. Jesus shares in our scripture this week that this Love should be so deeply woven into our lives that we might even find ourselves called to die for it. That’s a tall order for Loving one another. We continue the metaphor of the vine and the branches found in last week’s scripture. Join us on Sunday as Rev. Teresa helps us learn more about John’s gospel and this Love by Grace, in a sermon called “A Different Kind of Love,” based on John 15: 9-17. See you Sunday, in person or online!

John 15: 1-8 is a well-known and often-recited passage, about being the vine and the branches. It’s a call to be in community, to work communally. God prunes the vines to make room for new growth. On Sunday, we will explore the theme of being the branches that are deeply connected to Jesus, the vine, and tended by God, the vine-grower. Where is God pruning us as a community, and what new growth is on our horizon? Join us Sunday as Rev. Diane explores this familiar saying of Jesus in John’s gospel. It’s as if we are reading this Psalm over Jesus’ shoulder. This marvelous psalm has ingrained itself into the corporate prayer and devotion of the church. Let us take the opportunity to remind ourselves that it has functioned similarly in the synagogue. In that light, perhaps we should ask ourselves how this prayer of David may have shaped the prayer life of Jesus himself, faithful yet radical son of Israel that he was and is. This prayer was on Jesus’ lips long before his followers realized he was the shepherd. Join us Sunday as Rev. Teresa shares new insight into this familiar 23rd psalm. In Luke’s gospel, the day of the resurrection was jam-packed. The women came to the tomb, found it empty, and announced it to everyone. Later that day, two men were walking to Emmaus when Jesus appeared to them (but they did not recognize him until he broke bread with them). That evening, Jesus appeared among his disciples while they were eating dinner, opened the scriptures to them, commissioned them to share the good news with the whole world, and then ascended into heaven. What a day! We will take a look at Jesus’s last apparance to his disciples in Luke’s gospel. Rev. Diane will preach a sermon entitled “What a Day! What Now?” based on Luke 24: 36b – 48. The “great fifty days” of Easter provide an extended season for the church’s celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The seven weeks of Easter stand as one-seventh of the length of the year, just as Sunday stands as one-seventh of the week. As we celebrate the season of Easter, be on the lookout for signs of new life in Jesus Christ. This week we see new life in the disbelief of Thomas and his desire to see proof in the living Christ. We face many doubts. Join us Sunday as we find that we too are like Thomas and how we let faith be our strength. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Rev. Teresa will preach a sermon entitled “Doubting Reality,” based on John 20: 19 – 31. See you Sunday, in person or online!

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, the day when we celebrate Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the start of the week that would end in his death on the cross. It’s a story told in all four gospels, with some variations. The story in Mark’s gospel is more low-key and unassuming than we are used to – just a simple celebration, followed by a quick visit to the Temple and a night of rest. Rev. Diane will explore this version of the Palm Sunday story in a sermon entitled, “A Humble Parade,” based on Mark 11: 1-11. See you Sunday, in person or online!

How old were you when you first heard John 3:16? “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” It’s perhaps one of the most often-quoted verses from the New Testament — but too many people read it out of context. This Sunday, we will take a look at what Jesus meant in this scripture when he talked about eternal life and perishing, and what we need to take from the larger context of this passage. Rev. Diane will explore these questions and more in a sermon based on John 3: 14 – 21. See you Sunday, in person or online!

Welcome to Advent! Over the next few weeks, we will wait and prepare again for the birth of the Christ child. On the first Sunday of Advent, there is time to encounter the presence of Christ in our waking hours. We may not be physically asleep; quite the opposite. But in our wakefulness to worldly ways, we fall asleep to the spiritual season, and so we need a wake-up call from the Gospel of Mark. Join us Sunday to wake to a new spiritual season. Rev. Teresa will help us explore the importance of being watchful and alert while we wait, in a sermon titled, “Keep Awake,” based on Mark 13: 24-37. See you Sunday, in person or online!

We've been talking for the last few weeks about the parables Jesus shared in Matthew's gospel, just before he entered Jerusalem for the last time. We have learned about the importance of being ready and staying ready as we wait. We've learned about the importance of using our talents. And this week, Jesus gives specific instructions about what to do and how to serve others. The story of the sheep and the goats is a familiar one - the sheep feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the sick and the goats do none of these things. We will look at that story in the context of waiting and using our talents, and will talk about how we can serve others, Rev. Diane will help us explore this topic in a sermon titled, "Messy Ministry," based on Matthew 25: 31-46. See you Sunday, in person or online!

Join us this Sunday, November 5 for a celebration of the “saints” who have helped us grow in faith throughout our lives. We will remeber the lives of Kris Jensen and Martha Ann Wages, and we will have a special opportunity for everyone to reflect on and honor the saints in your own life.
Rev. Teresa will also help us explore ways to be authentic in our faith. Jesus speaks to the crowds and the disciples about the hypocrisy of the Scribes and the Pharisees. They put themselves above others because they know more about the laws of the Torah and they preach what people should do while they themselves do not follow the teachings. Jesus warns us to be authentic in our behaviors and thoughts and to watch out for the hypocrisy of others. You won’t want to miss this sermon, “Do as I say, not as I do,” based on Matthew 23: 1-12. Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians shows great praise for the church member’s faith. He has ample reason to express thanks for them in his prayers. He does not doubt God’s work in them. Yet he finds a way to challenge them to become the light in what they have become and show hope. God seeks us to show hope even when we find it difficult to find hope. This Sunday, Rev. You may have heard the story of Passover. During the time of Moses, God caused the Egyptians to suffer through many plagues, and finally killed all firstborn children, but spared ("passed over") the houses where Israelites lived. It's an event that led to the slaves fleeing from Egypt, an event that Jews still celebrate every year. Over the last two Sundays, we have taken a look at the story of Joseph and his brothers, including their relocation from Canaan to Egypt during a 7-year famine. This Sunday, we will look ahead to the book of Exodus, where we read about the descendents of Joseph and his brothers. We’ll talk about the rise of a different (and much less kind) Pharaoh, the reasons why Israelites were enslaved, and how a baby born to an Israelite woman came to be adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. And we’ll explore how the experiences of the Israelites in Egypt connect to our lives today. Diane will be preaching a sermon based on Exodus 1:8 – 2:10. See you Sunday, in person or online!

This Sunday, we will take a look at the first part of the Joseph story, and we’ll explore what it may have to tell us about family relationships, good and evil, and God’s intervention in our lives. This Sunday, we will conclude our celebration of Eastertide and the joy of the resurrection as we mark the ascension of Christ, as described in Luke's gospel. It's an interesting story, where Christ commissions his disciples to go out and preach the Good News, then tells them to stay in Jerusalem until they receive the power promised to them. How must the disciples have felt during that in-between time? And how does that relate to our experience now as a congregation, in an in-between time? Rev. Diane will be preaching, after an unexpectedly long break since Easter Sunday. You may want to read Luke 24: 44-53 in preparation. See you Sunday, in person or online.

One encounter with Christ can change everything. But, sometimes, we need more than one encounter. Sometimes we can see things clearly the first time. Sometimes, it takes more views to see things clearly. The work of Christ is never a one-time affair, it is a constant process of trial and error to get things in proper focus.

“…knowing that He who began a good work in you, will bring it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Remember that verse? It is Philippians 1:6 – the theme scripture for our Capital Campaign. Through this scripture, Paul reminds us that everything is a work in progress! But, as we stated earlier this summer, the goal is to get 2% better each day. As we move towards a new day in ministry, with what we know as “good”, we are going to exam the work done in us and the works still to come.

Last week, I said that the Apostles experienced the Resurrection, but not the Transformation! It wasn’t until Jesus shows Peter the love we all desire that Peter was transformed. Once Peter led, surely everyone followed. Love can transform anything, especially those who show that agape love Christ models.
This Sunday, in honor of a day where love is reserved for some and a necessary comfort for others, we will all be transformed by “The Overwhelming, Never-Ending, Reckless Love of God”. Please finish John 21 in preparation.
