In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was inspired by a woman named Sarah Hale to create the Thanksgiving holiday as a way to unite all U.S. Americans. He gave a proclamation that is still remarkably relevant, now nearly 160 years later. In this video I share an updated version for 2022.

“Trauma is the glue that holds polarization in place.”
In this classic Fractal Friends episode re-release, Duncan speaks with David Brubaker about the depth of polarization. They discuss the importance of honoring each others’ (and our own) dignity, even when we don’t agree with each other. Empathy is a valuable tool we can use to understand other perspectives and ask questions that produce profound answers.
David and Duncan delve deep into how trauma impacts polarization, including our epigenetics. That’s why it’s so important to know how to deal with trauma appropriately and recognize its wider effect on all of us.

David has consulted or trained with over 100 organizations worldwide. He’s served with several community development and conflict transformation organizations for over four decades.

Jordan Hall is the co-founder and executive chair of Neurohacker Collective, a groundbreaking supplements company based on complex systems science. Jordan is a person who is endeavoring to support the emergence of a possible, maybe plausible but definitely necessary transition in the culture of humanity. This effort is something that he cultivates in himself, in his relationships and in the world around him.
He is one of the originators of the idea of Game B, an infinite civilizational game where the goal is to continue playing. Game B is in contrast to our status quo Game A civilization, which is a finite game where the goal is to win.

“If you're not part of the problem, you can't be part of the solution”
Conflict is neutral, it is not bad nor good. It is an opportunity to evolve and better our connection and relationships. Because conflict is not binary, finding a solution to the problem now doesn’t mean every solution will never have another conflict. Conflict is inevitable and it is up to us to choose how we respond to it.
In this week’s episode, Olga and Duncan discuss the importance and use of mediation, dialogue and conflict transformation tools. In addition, they break down different ideas on how our system can change and approach conflicts.
The importance of change, letting go of blame, self-forgiveness, rewriting our idea of punishment and addressing change when problems arise before total unrest are key steps to help implement lasting change.
On the other side of the divisiveness, blame, fear and hate lies the path and possibility to create the world we actually want to live in.

Our democracy is having a hard time, and there’s pretty much an international consensus that things aren’t working. Our global system is ineffective and divisive.
People don’t believe that this system represents their voices because it doesn’t. We’re not making an effort to include everyone’s voices. Decisions aren’t collaborative, even when it comes to really important things. There’s no consensus on how to integrate things from our past, how to deal with current issues, or how to handle the long-term stuff coming down the pipe.
We have rivalrous win-lose systems, paradigms, and thinking that ensure we’re constantly in a divisive world. It seems to be getting worse. We’re not just organizing ourselves geographically, but by us and them, right and wrong, good and bad.
This rivalry has prevented diversity from being the boon that it can be. Instead, it’s a source of challenge and frustration. We desperately need to evolve our democracy and develop a political culture that understands our interconnectedness and aims to meet everyone’s needs.
We need to ensure that everyone has a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. In other words, we need an omni-win political culture and democracy.
I decided to dedicate my life, or at least for the foreseeable future, to supporting this evolution of democracy.
