In this week’s episode, Beau chats with Jason Becker, Host of the Arcjunkies podcast and Owner of Underground Metal Works and Weld Works Training Center about the difference between a welding certificate and a welding certification. In a recent video, Beau visited Jason’s facility to show the process of getting certified to D1.1 using Dual Shield Flux core and in the podcast Jason elaborates on the process of getting certified and making sure you are getting the right one. He emphasizes that welding certifications are specific to processes, positions, materials, and thicknesses and that a basic welding certification is not a requirement for all welding jobs.

In this week’s episode, Beau chats with Marc Levin who started an apprenticeship program called Welder Underground, in Brooklyn, New York. It aims to teach welding skills to young people aged 18 to 28. Unlike traditional schools, Welder Underground pays apprentices $15 per hour, eliminating the need for them to work multiple jobs to support themselves. The program provides a welcoming environment for those with no prior skills or training, emphasizing the importance of showing up on time, having a passion for learning, and a desire to use the skills for a positive purpose. The program currently involves building an 18-foot-tall sculpture designed by artist Eric Orr, which will be donated to Paris as a permanent reminder of the first Olympics to feature breaking as a sport.

In this week’s episode, Beau chats with Keenan Maines, a seasoned welder fabricator, who recounts his 35-year career. He talks about getting his start in welding at Braun where he held multiple positions and advises new welders to get into manufacturing to get exposure to all kinds of jobs. He then talks about learning to weld aluminum after hours at a shop to get another job building car wash systems before walking in the door of DeAngelo Marine Exhaust and telling the owner's wife he could weld better than the guy out in the show who happened to be the owner and put his skills to the test getting a job right off the street. He then left to pursue work building turbine boats and power generators before coming back to DeAngelos where he currently works in the fabrication department. He leaves the audience with advice to own up for mistakes you make, and do you best every day and the money will find you.

In this week's episode, Beau chats with Will Urban, Tim Urban, and Thomas Thibault about smelting using primitive techniques. We ran into them up at The Maker Camp and they let Beau join in on their collection and decided it would be cool to explain the process. From beginning to end they walk us through the process of smelting your own metal that you could use to make tools. From constructing a furnace out of clay, sand, and peat moss, to collecting the raw ore, to melting it down in the furnace to be consolidated into a bloom of iron.

In this week’s episode, Beau got to talk with Dan Colvin the Vice President of Robotics and Digital Solutions of North America over at ESAB. Automation is becoming more and more prevalent and the idea is a little scary to some people. From the fear of being replaced or having to spend time learning complicated programming. Dan talks a little bit about the progression of technology in the robotic sector. Through his years in the industry, he has gotten a front-row seat to watch it evolve. We talk a lot about how ESAB's new cobot is putting the fear of over-complicated programming to rest with the implementation of their app-based controls, making it easy to get parts set up, and even copy and paste if you have a lot of parts you are working on. He also explains the benefits of using a cobot from big companies all the way down to a father-son operation.

A few weeks ago, I met Craig Cowan at The Barefoot Forge. I found him by looking up the #pittsburghwelding to find someone local to me to visit. Little did I know that I was going to be exposed to a whole other side of the industry, the maker community. Craig not only offers intro to welding classes, he also has date night/girl's night classes such as making a rose, a railroad spike bottle opener and his most popular Damascus wedding rings. Couples can actually travel to his location (which is about to be an even bigger space) and create their own set of wedding rings. It is one of the most creative ideas I've ever heard and just makes the meaning of the ring so much more.
