I'm Giovanna, your host for this Friday show, and today we're going to talk about why going to the local movie theatre worth the effort. Going to the movie theatre seems quite unnecessary for many people with all the stream services available these days. You can just get home from work, turn on your tv and have a wide selection of movies that you can watch from your couch. You must be then wondering, then why going to the movie theatre is still worth the effort? You have to go there, wait in line, spend money on tickets… it seems like something people would like to avoid these days. But today, I will give you the top TEN reasons why going to the movie theatre IS STILL WORTH THE EFFORT, stay with me and we will navigate through all the amazing reasons why you should still visit a local movie theatre.

NUMBER 1) The big screen!

Whilst it’s tempting to watch movies from your couch, when you think about sitting in a dark theater staring at a massive 4k resolution huge screen with theunique ability to sweep you away. You get pulled into the sound and color in a way that you don’t feel when you’re sitting on your couch at home.

Number 2) There’s people everywhere!

Think of a group of people laughing together simultaneously. It triggers a feeling that you should laugh, too. And during a suspenseful moment, you can feel all those strangers having the same fears as you. Being able to relate to other people’s emotions while watching a movie at the movie theatre is truly an experience like no other.

Number 3) Focus

When you are watching movies at home, it is so easy to get distracted by many things. Your phone messages, calls, your cat, or your dog barking… maybe even your girlfriend or boyfriend wanting kisses. If you are at the movie theatre, this is unlikely to happen. It’s easier to fight the temptation to check your phone messages and you will be able to focus on every important detail of the movie. You will also probably have an empty bladder as you have thought about it ahead!

Number 4) The massive speaker systems

Let’s all agree, the Soundsystem of movie theatres are nothing compared to the ones we have at home. They are super potent and they are able to provide a full blown sound effects experience. Suspense and Horror movies in particular are the ones that are the best to watch at the movie theatres, it makes the adrenaline peak and will certainly get us all to scream together!

Number 5) Previews

Who doesn’t like to be up to date on the amazing upcoming movie trailers? When you stream at home it’s not possible to see the preview of movies that will be released soon. Watching trailers can really leave you with the sweet taste of I want more! And you will probably not want to miss that new movie from that awesome director!

I have always been crazy about movie posters since I was really young. I would always check them for a long time during my visit to movie theatres and I would get stoked about the different images, colours and design. As I started to grow up, I started collecting the posters of my favourite movies and I would stick them around my bedroom wall. My favourite movie posters are 2001: A space odyssey, the shining and a clockwork orange from kubrick. Jean Luc Godard’s movie pierrot le fou also has one of the most iconic movie poster. When taking about iconic movie poster designers, saul bass is a big name for a reason, he has created one of the most iconic poster designs in the film industry. Another name worth mentioning is James Verdesoto, that created the poster for Pulp Fiction. When it comes to new indie movie poster makers, Karine Savard has worked in beautiful poster design projects for movies such as blue is the warmest colour.

What a great movie poster can do is set the tone for the experience before you even go into the theatre. Movie posters design back in the days used to be considered a real piece of art-work. But nowadays the way the design process for creating movie poster has changed quite significantly because of technology. Whilst posters in the 70’s had a very artistic feel to it, many lot of movie posters nowadays simply include pictures of actors and they also started to adopt very similar looks and feels to them.

When it comes to the process of poster design creation, it should be able to capture the essence of the movie without giving the plot away. Capturing the essence of the movie in the poster is essential – and this is the key component that dictates all of the design choices that the designer will be making. Let’s say it’s a horror movie, then the poster should adopt a dark vibe to it, with darker colours and perhaps a bizarre scene. In addition, it is essential to portray one key element of the movie in the poster design.

Colour is a very important factor in movies but also in poster designs. Colours can trigger strong emotions in the audience. A lot of designers choose colours that will attract attention. Using contrasting colours is also a great way to achieve that. Think about romantic comedies, the choice of colour palette for these kind of movies will be brighter than other genres. Many romantic comedy movie posters tend to learn to warmer tones and pink is quite often used since the target audience is mainly females. On the other hand, it’s very common for science fiction movies, to use blue as blue is often associated with technology and it is able to provide a futuristic feel to the design.

The choice of typography is also a really important element when designing movie posters.

Comedy movies always seem to adopt big bold font types. And horror movies always use fonts that looks like its melting, or with some kind of texture in it. The right choice of typography will set the tone for the movie.

I have always been a huge fan of indie movies. because they have an overall different feel to it and you never really know what’s going to happen in the movie. not that you know with mainstream movies, but it’s more likely that you are going to be seeing a very similar movie formula, with a plot that always seems to end just the same. just like the romantic comedies, where the couples always seem to find their way back together. mainstream filmmakers are always afraid of adapting new plots, because that can mean the movie will not have enough return of investment and it represents a big risk for mainstream movie makers. on the other hand, indie movie directors are not afraid to adopt freshness into their movies, they feel a lot less pressure because the budget used in these movies are usually smaller, so they have more freedom to experiment with their movies and let their creativity flow.

What I truly love about indie movies is that are the closest to portraying reality. they always seem to portray real-life socio-political issues. there’s more freedom to approach taboo themes as well, which makes it a truly interesting piece of work. indie movies are most likely going to approach themes such as sexuality in a much more raw way, unlike mainstream movies, indie movies can approach themes such as homosexuality transsexuality in a very transparent way, where the public can actually connect with the character’s story. think about the movie boys don’t cry, a drama movie about the life of Brandon, a transgender who falls to be a victim of a terrible hate crime, this movie came out when conversations about sexuality and identity issues were really problematic back then, and it was able to raise awareness on the issue. the movie 90’s Belgian movie my life in pink, a movie about a young kid named Ludovic who is viewed by the community as a boy but wishes to be seen as a girl. the most recent movie called tangerine also gained a lot of attention, for being fully recorded on an iPhone and for being a movie that sheds a light on what it’s like to be a trans sex worker.

Indie movies also approach themes such as feminism and women empowerment much more than mainstream movies. mainstream Hollywood movies are rather famous for being sexist in the way they portray women. not all mainstream movies obviously, but they always go hard on the use of gender profiling in their movies and build gender-stereotypical characters. for example, let’s think about most romantic movies, where a girl always has to find the man of their dreams otherwise she is not happy. or all the James bond movies, where girls are highly sexualized. although Hollywood is trying to change this and bring a fresher outlook to movies, the indie movie industry is still doing better when it comes to women empowerment. think about works from the Belgian movie director Chantal Akkerman, a self-professed feminist who revolutionized the indie movie industry. or the classic 90’s indie movie watermelon woman, that talks about the life of a black lesbian woman.
