The digital entertainment landscape is changing fast. Consumers increasingly access programmes and content not just through linear broadcasting channels but via 'catch up TV', the internet and by downloading. In addition to professional content producers, user-generated content is increasing in popularity. Technology as always is a key source of disruptive change. Faster and more ubiquitous broadband connections provided by mobile and fixed telecoms providers offer multiple channels, alongside traditional broadcasting channels, to access content. With internet-enabled TVs, smart devices and phones, device manufacturers offer the scope for a more immersive and shared experience of digital content. Over-the-top providers are not only cashing-in on the increasing availability of these technological changes but are increasingly investing in commissioning their own content. Telecoms providers and retailers in turn are seeking out ways to access the bourgeoning content market. The UK is fortunate in having one of the most technophile consumers. However in such a fast changing environment, there will be winners and losers. With the help of industry leaders deeply involved in these changes, this session will debate the critical issues for the various parts of the value chain and the challenges for a sustainable value model across this chain.
Featuring: Rory Cellan Jones (Chair), Paul Hide, CE Council, Intellect, Andrew Uden, Technology Manager, Tesco, Dr. Mike Short CBE, Vice President - Telefonica Europe, Clive Carter, Director of Strategy, Ofcom
With more and more children spending an increasing amount of time online, the whole entertainment industry has a role to play in ensuring they stay safe whilst accessing the internet. This is a significant challenge which must be answered with a mix of technological and educational solutions right from the network through to the home, and from the device to the content itself. Experts in this session will then discuss how industry can meet those challenges, and how this important issue will impact the entertainment sector moving forward.
Featuring: Julian David, Director General, Intellect, Will Gardner, CEO, Childnet, Simon Milner, Director Policy, Facebook, Godfrey Nunes, General Manager, Group Industry Policy, BT Group PLC, Peter Johnson, CEO, ATVOD
The Chairman of the House of Commons, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee addresses the conference.
With a radio switchover being planned, listening via tablets and smartphones is increasing and new connected cars with more entertainment services are no longer 'radios on wheels'. Against this backdrop there are still millions of people who still love their simple radio experience - turn it on and listen. This session will examine how the radio industry can ensure that digital technology means a richer radio experience and deliver what a younger generation will expect on their multiple screens while enhancing radio for those who just want to sit back and listen?
Featuring: Rory Cellan-Jones (Chair), Ford Ennals, CEO, DRUK, Mike Hill, MD, Radioplayer, Mark Friend, Controller Multiplatforms & Interactive Radio, BBC, Pete Downton, Director of Cloud Services, Imagination Technologies, Patrick Hannon, VP Corporate Development, Frontier Silicon
As 4G LTE, fibre optic broadband and wi-fi become pervasive, experts representing the broad range of communication channels will examine how a new era of complete connectivity will impact content delivery, the user experience, spectrum allocation and of course, revenue models throughout the entertainment value chain.
Social TV has been one of the key industry buzz words for the past few years. Launched 2 years ago as the concept really started to take off, few firms can be said to have led the pack like Zeebox. With exciting developments and significant international deals already under their belt, Zeebox are riding the wave of a new social age for television. As social TV begins to adapt to a new position in the limelight of the masses, we'll question Zeebox co-founder on whether the trend can really stand the test of time, how it will impact the entertainment value chain, and just how it can live up to all the hype?
As the number of delivery methods, devices, channels, platforms, and content providers escalate, this session will examine how the TV landscape is changing to incorporate a new multi-media hybrid experience. Speakers will discuss the impact of fragmented consumer attention, the opportunites presented by new technology and deeper interaction, and where value is shifting as a new intertwinned and mature broadcast and internet value chain emerges.
Featuring: Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC (Chair), Ashley MacKenzie, CEO, Base79, Ilse Howling, MD, Freeview, Stella Medlicott, CMO, Red Bee Media, Patrick Walker, Director EMEA, YouTube, James Micklethwait, Online Product Director, ITV
As one of the world's most innovative broadcasters, Channel 4 continue to break new ground in delivering cutting edge services to the consumer across genres, screens, and platforms, bringing with it unparalleled consumer engagement opportunities to the whole sector. CEO David Abraham will discuss some of the major challenges and opportunities faced by broadcasters in this brave new connected world whilst outlining his vision for the future of entertainment.
From humble beginnings in a warehouse in Acton to a global community numbering 10 million visitors, on-demand radio platform Mixcloud has opened up exciting new forms of distribution and discovery for radio and curated music content. Co-founder Nikhil Shah will discuss the importance of both user and customer centred design to build an audience and develop a sustainable business model.
The first debate of the day will bring recognised industry leaders together to discuss the importance of content providers and tech firms working together to deliver new compelling services to consumers more quickly. As the emerging digital nation and consumer test bed for the world, new entertainment trends which start in the UK increasingly go on to spread across the globe. Speakers will then examine how the whole ecosystem, from content and tech providers through to retailers and broadcasters, can unite to ensure the UK not only shapes but leverages the trends it sets in a new internationally connected environment.
Featuring: Rory Cellan- Jones, BBC (Chair), Sir Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination Technologies Ltd, Mike Smith, President of Music, EMI Records, Jo Dipple, CEO, UK Music
