On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta speaks with First Officer Forrest Pendleton, Chair of the Pilot Assistance Network (PAN), to find out how this committee and its volunteers help Delta pilots juggle family and their career while maintaining positive mental and physical health through peer-to-peer support. Pilots are in a unique career field governed by the FAA medical certification process, which has specific requirements on reporting to the FAA visits to some mental health and medical practitioners. This obstacle has made it difficult for some pilots to seek access to the help they need; PAN helps pilots navigate the issue of reportability while getting them the help they need and deserve.
Helping pilots and their families manage everything from day-to-day pressures and challenges to training stress to family issues to mental and physical health issues to FAA medical questions, PAN is made up of more than 30 Delta pilot volunteers who answer a 24/7 hotline. PAN is part of the Delta MEC’s Aeromedical Committee and was specifically created to help Delta pilots facing physiological, psychological, and medical concerns or for those needing to talk to someone.
PAN’s goal is to help mitigate the threats that sometimes put our medical certificates, our pay, and our very jobs at risk. To speak with a peer volunteer, call PAN at 888-4-DAL-PAN (888-432-5726) or submit a callback request here. Calls to PAN are absolutely confidential. PAN does not take notes nor collect any data or information - ever. You will never be a data point on a PAN call, and not even de-identified information will ever be collected, shared, or reported to ALPA, Delta Air Lines, and the FAA. (Recorded November 7, 2023).

Delta pilots now have a new contractual life insurance option, which can save them tax dollars now and opens a wide variety of investment options while offering benefits to pass along to families and beneficiaries. In a conversation with Jonathan Roman, MetLife’s GVUL administrator, the Engage team, along with Retirement & Insurance Committee members Scott Bowles and John Doherty, sift through the details of the GVUL compared to our current term policy provided by Delta. Highlights include an updated death benefit provided to Delta pilots and paid for by the Company, significantly reduced imputed income for pilots of all ages, tax-free and tax-deferred investment options which pilots can withdraw for any reason at any time, and the ability to take the GVUL policy with you in retirement.
Pilot action is required! The GVUL will be offered during Delta’s open enrollment period, November 1-17, 2023. Pilots must first select the GVUL option during the open enrollment period and then enroll with MetLife through an emailed link. Pilots who wish to remain on the current term policy need not take any action. Active pilots may opt-in and enroll during subsequent year open enrollment periods. That is, if you miss the two-step process deadline this year or decide to wait, you can enroll next year and in the future during the open enrollment period.
For more information, please go to https://www.metlife.com/gvul/DeltaAirLines/
Jonathan Roman will also present the GVUL benefits during WebEx sessions on the dates below. Click here to attend remotely.

“How it Works” is part of a continuing series from the Central Air Safety Committee (CASC). On today’s episode,First Officer Jerimy Maclellan from CASC explains how Latest Allowable Takeoff Time (LATT) works. While seemingly simple, LATT is more complex and dynamic than most think. Did you know there are two LATTs? An FDP LATT and a Block LATT. Ever get rerouted? Your LATTs are likely incorrectly updated on your paperwork. As a FAR 117 requirement, LATT violations can create significant issues for pilots. On this episode, Jerimy explains what LATT is, how it affects pilots, and how to calculate and update LATT with rolling delays and operational challenges. (Recorded July 21, 2023)
On this episode of Engage, the Delta MEC Secretary, Captain Shane Corbett, discusses volunteering for the Delta MEC and asks pilots of all backgrounds to raise their hands in support of the pilot group. Shane explains how volunteers are compensated for their time, what positions are currently open, and how interested pilots can get in touch with particular committees. Host First Officer Ryan Argenta and Engage podcast volunteer Captain Jason Depewgive their perspectives on volunteering at the union. Ever wonder how you could get involved in union work? Have an interest in a particular subject such as Scheduling, PBS, Contract Administration, Hotels, Safety, and more? Tune in to learn more about becoming a part of the Delta MEC team. New to the Engage Podcast, introducing “How it Works,” as part of a continuing series from the Central Air Safety Committee (CASC). On today’s episode,First Officer Jerimy Maclellanfrom CASC explains how 30 hours required rest within the preceding 168 hours works. This FAR 117 regulatory rest period affects all pilots and is often misunderstood, miscalculated, and misapplied by both pilots and Crew Scheduling. Wondering how you got that last- minute reserve assignment when you thought you should be in rest? Ever miss out on a green slip because you weren’t given 30 hours rest? Puzzled how your 30-hour rest was scheduled on a layover? Jerimy explains it all and offers pilots an easy way to calculate the math. Tune in to find out how 30/168 works. (Recorded July 21, 2023)
On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta meets with Capt. Shawn Kellett and Capt. Ian Turner of the Scheduling Committee, along with Capt. Frank Wedding, newly elected member of the Negotiating Committee (NC) and former Scheduling Committee Vice Chair, to discuss new contract implementation items relating to Section 23 L, Reroute. The group discusses and explains the new simplified reroute pay provisions in PWA 23 L.4, and how various pay treatments are compounding, or “stacking,” adding value for both regular and reserve pilots. The experts explain some of the complexities of reroute, what pilots should be looking for, and what to avoid while ensuring their reroutes are PWA compliant. Additionally, the group discusses new provisions for positive space commuting and hotel options following a reroute that releases beyond a pilot’s originally scheduled release. Reroutes were one of the highest scheduling and quality of life priorities for Delta pilots based on polling for C2019. Tune in to learn more about the new contract provisions and more. Back again with Capt. Shawn Kellett and Capt. Ian Turner of the Scheduling Committee and Capt. Frank Wedding of the Negotiating Committee. The Engage podcast dives into the complexities of contract changes, beginning with rotations reporting on or after August 31, 2023. The crew discusses new scheduling items such as a new, hard-stop PWA Flight Duty Period (FDP) Limit of 13 hours for domestic rotations, including deadhead segments, new consecutive layover restrictions for bid package rotations, and break-in-duty requirements for rotation construction. Frank also explains new PWA language defining “redeye” flights, and if you know what a WOCL is or you fly redeyes, this episode is a must-listen for important changes and PWA protections coming on August 31. Finally, the group explains new Extended Duty Period (EDP) Pay beginning with un-augmented rotations reporting on or after August 31, in which pilots will now be paid on a minute-by-minute basis for duty time extending beyond ten (10) hours. New provisions and more, tune in and Engage. (Recorded August 16, 2023)
New to the Engage Podcast, introducing “How it Works”, as part of a continuing series in collaboration the Central Air Safety Committee (CASC). On today’s episode, First Officer Jerimy Maclellan from CASC, explains how Crew Tracking may shift airport report times later than scheduled to accommodate delays while preserving pilot duty periods. While extra rest or time at the hotel seems beneficial, this seemingly innocuous event may actually extend duty periods and FDP limits, opening up pilots to reroutes, extended delays, additional legs, and fatigue. CASC is seeing numerous data and reports indicating shifted report times are affecting both international and domestic pilots alike. Listen in to find out how it works. (Recorded July 21, 2023)

Items include new reserve rules, 18-hour minimum callouts, and changes to be aware of with second-day manual trip coverage. The group also discusses the hot topic of how the Company is utilizing a loophole in 23 M.7 to bypass steps of coverage allowing them to skip green slip coverage altogether. Additionally, under this loophole provision, Shawn and Frank explain how there are hundreds of pilots abrogating seniority and asking the Company to circumvent the contract in which they are calling for pilots to "knock it off". They also explain an important FRMS issue affecting A350 pilots. And finally, the Engage crew say farewell and good luck to Frank Wedding as he prepares to move to the Negotiating Committee. On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta discusses with First Officer Matt Loveday, Fitness Review Board (FRB) Chairman, the issue of fatigue that still plagues pilots due to a grueling operations schedule despite being in the shoulder months. Matt explains while pilot fatigue calls are still at an all-time high, there are many pilots not calling in fatigued but rather pushing through and writing to the FRB afterwards. Matt and Ryan go through what a fatigue call to the Duty Pilot looks like and options pilots have for calling fatigue or unfit for duty. They also speculate how the new contract improvements will affect fatiguing rotations and pilot fatigue levels alike. As Delta begins ramping up the operations tempo for the summer travel season, this episode is a must listen and a great reminder for all pilots. (Recorded March 27, 2023)

On this Labor Day special episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta gets together with legacy pilots First Officer David Adler, MEC Secretary, and Captain Brian Kolbus to discuss where we’ve been and where we need to go as a pilot group as our industry continues to change and shift in new and significant ways. Highlighting important lessons learned from previous contracts and major events; how important it is to support one another through pilot unity and how that unity has seriously moved the needle on negotiations; and a few war stories from earlier days, including the Northwest Airlines strike of 1998. This episode is a tribute to those who have endured tumultuous times throughout their careers, sacrificing their time, energy, and effort to secure the future of aviation at Delta Air Lines and beyond – for that, we thank you. On this Labor Day, we reflect and pay homage to the past while recognizing that Delta pilots are at a critical juncture in securing our future at Delta Air Lines. Everyone is fighting a battle you may know nothing about. On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta speaks with Grant Olbrich, Chairman of the Pilot Assistance Network (PAN), to find out how this committee and its volunteers help Delta pilots juggle family and career while maintaining positive mental and physical health through peer-to-peer support. Pilots are in a unique career field governed by the FAA medical certification process which has specific requirements on reporting to the FAA visits to some mental health and medical practitioners. This obstacle has made it difficult for some pilots to seek access to the help they need; PAN helps pilots navigate the issue of reportability while getting them the help they need and deserve. Special guest Adam Bradley, SLC First Officer Representative, joins Ryan and Grant to discuss how important it is for pilots to be able to get the help they need without threat to their medical certificates and how PAN is a priority for the Delta MEC. Adam explains the Delta MEC recently unanimously approved a resolution making access to mental health for pilots an urgent priority for ALPA to take to Congress and the FAA.
Helping pilots and their families manage everything from day-to-day pressures and challenges to training stress to family issues to mental and physical health issues to FAA medical questions, the Pilot Assistance Network is made up of more than 30 Delta pilot volunteers who answer a 24/7 hotline. PAN is part of the Delta MEC’s Aeromedical Committee and specifically created to help Delta pilots facing physiological, psychological, and medical concerns or for those just needing to talk to someone.
PAN’s goal is to help mitigate the threats that sometimes put our medical certificates, our pay, and our very jobs at risk. To speak with a peer volunteer, call PAN at 1-800-673-7150.
Calls to PAN are absolutely confidential. PAN does not take notes nor collect any data or information - ever. You will never be a data point on a PAN call and not even de-identified information is ever collected, shared, or reported to ALPA, Delta Air Lines, and the FAA.

On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta sits down with Mike Cowan and Scott Ryan of the PBS Committee for an in-depth review of the NAVBLUE PBS bidding platform, how to navigate the transition to the new WebApp along with some tips, tricks, and best practices to bid for what you want and actually get it. On July 25, the Web UI version of PBS will sunset, and pilots will be re-directed to the new PBS WebApp. This affects all pilots bidding for September and beyond. Mike and Scott explain just how seamless the transition will be and where to easily find help when you need it. This introductory episode on bidding is just one of a several-part series on PBS bidding pitfalls, strategy, and how to maximize your bidding success. Did you know? You can have a PBS Committee guru review your bids each month for clarity, functionality, and reality before the bid window closes. Tune in to find out how and more! (Recorded June 9, 2022)
On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta speaks with Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), about AFA’s campaign to help Delta flight attendants organize, how a flight attendant union at Delta would affect Delta pilots, and how Delta pilots can best support their flight attendant colleagues.
At the DAL MEC Regular Meeting in June, Sara Nelson updated the MEC as to the AFA’s organizing effort at Delta, which is gaining significant momentum. The MEC subsequently unanimously approved a resolution supporting the AFA’s organizing drive for Delta flight attendants. On this episode, Sara discusses how subjects of bargaining for pilots, such as Profit Sharing, are often given to flight attendants to keep their unionization efforts at bay. She also explains how a flight attendants’ union would alleviate pilots from having to negotiate pay and benefits on behalf other employee groups. The Company has frequently told the Negotiating Committee that Delta must provide the same negotiated benefits, such as Profit Sharing, sought by pilots to flight attendants. A collective bargaining agent for flight attendants would stop this management tactic in its tracks. In addition, Sara explains that with AFA on Delta property, the flight attendants can bargain for themselves, and management can stop attempting to charge pilots for the costs of providing hard-bargained contractual gains to other employee groups.
Sara asks for the Delta pilots’ support by talking to flight attendants about having a union and answering their questions, supporting flight attendants by wearing AFA pins, and helping flight attendants fill out AFA authorization cards. The Delta MEC supports the AFA and our Delta flight attendants. Pilots wishing to show their support by wearing AFA pins or helping with authorization cards should contact their LEC representatives. Please note AFA authorization cards must not be distributed or filled out on Company time or on the airplane; however, doing so during layovers, on crew transportation, at airports, or while on personal time is appropriate.

On this episode of Engage, host First Officer Ryan Argenta speaks with Attorney Marcus Migliore, ALPA’s General Counsel & Director, Legal Department, about the implications of the Railway Labor Act (RLA) on Section 6 negotiations and how pilot-coordinated self-help actions can adversely derail progress at the table. Ryan and Mr. Migliore dig into a number of cases where pilot actions, such as refusing to pick up open time trips, green slips, and coordinating a sick out resulted in court action and stiff sanctions for individual pilots as well as for the union. They also discuss what self-help actions pilots can take under the RLA and how pilot unity, wearing lanyards, and informational picketing is making a huge impact at the negotiating table. As things heat up in negotiations and frustrations run high this summer, Mr. Migliore explains how important it is for Delta pilots to keep cool, follow the rules and laws imposed by the RLA and let ALPA and elected representatives follow the defined flow process. Happy Mother’s Day! On this episode of Engage, we honor all moms and highlight the challenging lives of Delta pilot moms and families. Host, First Officer Ryan Argenta, speaks with Pilot Family Matters Committee (PFMC) Chair First Officer Alison Britton, First Officer Carrie Nickell and First Officer Cassie Nelson about the issues and challenges Delta pilot moms face as they balance their careers with family life, the need for maternity and paternity improvements from Delta, and current support programs available to pilots through PFMC.
Empathy, understanding, and appreciation can only go so far when it is policy change, increased benefits, and truly supportive programs that are desired and much needed. The Delta MEC recognizes the severely lacking maternity benefits and support programs offered by Delta. While these much-needed improvements are currently being discussed in contract negotiations, the Delta MEC believes all mothers, fathers, and families should be provided exceptional paid leave and support benefits by Delta without having to negotiate for such basic and necessary provisions. Delta’s desire for diversity must be backed by real and valuable benefits for all employees – Delta mothers, fathers, and family members have earned it.
The Delta MEC Pilot Family Matters Committeeoffers support and resources to pilot families on a variety of topics including maternity, paternity, and bonding leave, adoption support, and a robust maternity mentorship program walking new moms and all pilots alike through the challenges of parenthood.
Happy Mother’s Day to all Delta pilot moms! Thank you for your dedicated service to the airline and career you love and, most importantly, thank you for all you do for your children and your family.
On this episode of Engage, host Ryan Argenta learns from the Hotel Committee (Steve Koffler, Craig Stephens, Stephen Roberts) how layover hotels are sourced, contracted, and conceived and the group dives into little known secrets about crew discounts, certain perks, and why we don't get hotel loyalty points. The group also discusses quality of life and hotel improvements for Section 6 negotiations and the need for stronger contractual language when it comes to layover hotels, transportation, and fatigue mitigation. Ryan solves some long-held rumors and myths like which hotels did Northwest once own, why some layover hotels are not in downtown locations, and how you can get a Peloton bike delivered to your hotel room. Plus, Did You Know? Pilots are contractually allowed to source their own transportation if company arranged transportation does not arrive within 20 minutes? Same goes for hotel accommodations. And find out from the Hotel Committee the system's hottest hotels and where they are. (Recorded March 23, 2022)
Whether you've been a Delta pilot for 30 days or 30 years, scope affects you daily. It affects the industry. It affects your seniority. It affects the seat you hold, the airplane you fly. If you feel stuck on a fleet, seat, or base you didn't want, scope has impacted you. And if you've ever walked by a gate with a foreign carrier boarding Delta passengers from a hub to an international city and wondered why Delta pilots aren't flying that route, scope affects you. Nick Hoefer and George Strehlow (Scope Compliance & Analysis Committee) sit down with host Ryan Argenta to explain our current scope clause, how the surge in Delta's appetite for joint ventures and ownership in foreign carriers impacts everyone, and the need for updated scope language in our contract to include a modernized global scope agreement. A must-listen episode for all pilots as we enter negotiations on global scope and the need to protect and preserve the "currency" that is our seniority and our careers.
