We look at electrical engineering solutions for electrical power systems designs, electrical safety, and electrical automation and controls. Regarding electrical power, we discuss electrical power designs based off of the NEC (National Electric Code). Regarding electrical safety, we cover such topics as short circuit studies, coordination studies, arc flash studies, transient motor starting studies, and more. Electrical safety topics are based on US codes such as NFPA 70E. Finally, we look at electrical controls and automation. These topics include such things as PLC (programmable logic controllers) programming and hardware, controls techniques, P&ID (proportional, integral, derivative), and more!

Personal protective equipment is the protective clothing worn by employees to protect them from arc flash thermal hazards and shock hazards. PPE should be considered, however, the last line of defense when it comes to electrical hazards.

A qualified person as defined in NFPA 70E and part of that definition states that the employee is one who has received safety training to identify and avoid the hazards involved. That understanding requires knowing what the different parts of an arc flash label are and what they mean.  In this video, we review and discuss the various parts of the arc flash label, what they mean, and how to understand and utilize the information provided by the label.  The label is designed to help qualified employees understand what PPE is required to protect them from the potential hazards.

Shock hazards occur when an individual contacts exposed energized components. In cases of higher voltages, however, the individual only has to approach the exposed electrical components as the electricity can jump the air gap if the resistance to the air is low enough.  In addition, we discuss two types of electric shock: touch potential and step potential.
