Got Somme : Wine Podcast: Recent Episodes

From Your Pocket

'Got Somme' is a podcast for wine lovers who know nothing about what's in the glass. The series will aim to educate listeners on types, tannins and taste to producers, appellations and age.

Our mission is to find the best bottle of $30 wine using Master Sommelier Carlos Santos' world renowned talent with grapes.

Carlos will aim to teach radio announcer and novice wine enthusiast Angus O'Loughlin how to discern a good wine from a bad and empower listeners with a skill set good enough to choose the table wine next time you have friends over.

Fully accessible for people who are deaf or hard of hearing with each episode filmed and posted online with captions at Got Somme

Before Gary Vaynerchuk became known around the world as GaryVee, he built his first audience talking about wine.

In this special episode of Got Somme, Gary returns to his roots for a conversation with Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos about wine, business, collecting and where the global wine market could be heading next.

Gary explains why he believes wine buyers currently have more power than producers, with oversupply creating extraordinary opportunities to purchase premium bottles for a fraction of their traditional prices.

He reveals the remarkable deals he is seeing from Australia and New Zealand, including Barossa Shiraz, Margaret River Chardonnay and Central Otago Pinot Noir, and explains why this could be one of the greatest wine-buying periods he has experienced in 35 years.

Gary predicts that blockchain technology could allow collectors to buy, sell and trade ownership of physical bottles without repeatedly moving them between warehouses. The wine could remain safely stored under temperature-controlled conditions until its owner chooses to redeem it.

It is a prediction Gary believes people will return to in ten years.

IN THIS EPISODE

• Discovering wine while working in his family’s liquor store

• Building Wine Library and becoming an early wine creator on YouTube

• How Wine Library TV challenged the pretension surrounding wine

• Learning to enjoy wine as a consumer instead of an operator

• Why Gary believes the current market strongly favours wine buyers

• Premium Australian and New Zealand wines being heavily discounted

• Using wine dinners to build stronger business relationships

• Why a brilliant $15 wine can be more exciting than a famous label

• The value and humility of blind wine tasting

• How Australian Shiraz and Chardonnay have evolved

• Why buttery, oaky Chardonnay may be returning

• How NFTs and blockchain could change fine wine ownership

• The future of wine collecting and temperature-controlled storage

Is The Standish Wine Company producing the best Shiraz in Australia, and potentially the world?

In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos taste two extraordinary Australian Shiraz wines: the highly acclaimed Standish Lamella and the exceptionally rare Andelmonde.

Andelmonde has returned after a six-year absence and was only available to customers who purchased the entire Standish collection. With tiny production numbers, immediate sell-outs and two 100-point wines in the range, these bottles have become some of the most difficult Australian wines to find.

Carlos breaks down the intense floral aromas, violet, lavender, dark fruit, chocolate, spice, graphite, acidity and fine-grained tannins found across both wines. The pair also discuss how long these powerful Barossa and Eden Valley Shiraz wines could age, why Standish wines benefit from being opened well in advance and whether decanting can unlock their full potential.

They also compare the experience of serving a cult wine such as Lamella with opening an iconic Australian bottle like Penfolds Grange or Henschke Hill of Grace. Are wine drinkers paying purely for quality, or does history, prestige and recognition transform a bottle into an experience?

Plot Twist: Isaac Smith and Elliot Garnaut from No Utes in the Valet also join the tasting to deliver their completely unfiltered verdicts on both wines.

Carlos is back from Portugal with a tan, a cellar full of memories and a very rare bottle to share.

In this episode of Got Somme, Angus and Carlos unpack Carlos’ recent trip home, from rediscovering beautifully evolved Portuguese wines from 2008 and 2014 to seeing how dramatically Portugal’s restaurant scene and wine culture have developed.

They also settle a surprisingly heated Instagram debate about cork length, ageing wine in large-format bottles and why a shorter cork is not always a bad sign.

Then comes the main event: a 600-bottle (total) Pinot Noir from Portugal’s Douro Valley. Carlos sees elegance, freshness and a fascinating expression of an international variety in one of Portugal’s most iconic wine regions. Angus? He is less convinced.

Is it a brilliant, unexpected Pinot Noir, or simply a wine speaking a language your palate does not yet understand?

In this episode of the Got Somme Blind Wine Series, Angus throws Carlos Santos, Master Sommelier, one of the hardest blind tastings yet.

The twist? The wine is served in a fully blacked-out RIEDEL blind tasting glass, meaning Carlos can’t see the colour, viscosity or clarity. It could be Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Grüner Veltliner or even something completely unexpected.

As Carlos works through the aromas, structure, acid, body and flavour profile, the wine starts to point in every direction at once. Fresh citrus, green apple, pear, almond shell, savoury texture and a salty finish all suggest a white wine, but the reveal leaves both Angus and Carlos genuinely stunned.

The wine? Bianco di Merlot from Switzerland.

Thanks https://invidiawines.com/

Yes, a white wine made from Merlot.

This is one of the most surprising blind tastings we’ve done on Got Somme, and a perfect example of how much colour influences the way we assess wine.

Episode Highlights

  • Angus introduces the RIEDEL black blind tasting glass

  • Carlos explains why colour is so important in blind wine tasting

  • The wine presents as fresh, citric and savoury

  • Carlos considers Chablis, Grüner Veltliner, Müller-Thurgau, Aligoté, Chasselas and Sylvaner

  • The reveal shocks both Angus and Carlos

  • Carlos explains why Bianco di Merlot would be almost impossible to identify blind

Everyone knows Margaret River.

But just north of one of Australia's most famous wine regions sits Geographe — home to passionate growers, boutique producers and some of the country's best-value wines.

After discovering a Geographe Chardonnay by chance, Angus found himself heading down a rabbit hole of wines from a region he'd barely explored before. A few weeks later, a chance meeting at the Good Food & Wine Show led to this conversation with Ryan from Aylesbury Estate.

Joined by Master Sommelier Carlos Santos, the team explores what makes Geographe one of Australia's most exciting emerging wine regions. Stretching between Perth and Margaret River, Geographe combines coastal influence, elevated vineyard sites and a growing reputation for exceptional Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and alternative grape varieties.

Ryan shares his family's 150-year farming story, explains why Geographe consistently overdelivers on value and discusses the collaborative spirit driving the region's future.

Along the way, the team tastes wines from Aylesbury Estate, Willow Bridge Estate and Vineyard 28 while discussing why Australian wine lovers should be paying much closer attention to what's happening north of Margaret River.

If you've never explored Geographe wines before, this episode might just convince you to start.

What makes a wine truly iconic?

In this episode of Got Somme, Master Sommelier Carlos Santos and Angus O'Loughlin open a bottle from one of the most historic producers in Spain: López de Heredia.

Founded more than 150 years ago, López de Heredia has become one of the defining names of traditional Rioja, holding onto old-school winemaking methods while much of the wine world chased trends. Carlos explains why this producer is considered one of the great benchmark wineries of the world, compares it to legendary Bordeaux estates, and reveals why he’s never had a bad bottle in 26 years of tasting wine professionally.

  • The history of Rioja during the phylloxera crisis
  • Why López de Heredia releases wines years later than most producers
  • How modern winemaking trends changed Rioja
  • The difference between Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva
  • Why Carlos became genuinely offended when Angus questioned Rioja quality

There’s also a fascinating breakdown of how French winemakers helped shape Rioja during the 1800s, why counterfeiting became a huge issue for historic Spanish producers, and what wine lovers should actually look for when identifying quality Rioja.

This starts as a structured blind tasting and slowly turns into a geography exam with wine in the middle.

The wine shows clean fruit, floral lift, and chalky minerality. No oak. Medium-plus acidity. Everyone immediately starts narrowing the field like they’re 90% confident.

Then the guesses begin:

Pinot Grigio feels right.

Grüner Veltliner is in the conversation.

Verdejo gets a mention.

Chablis gets a respectful exclusion.

Every option feels correct… until it doesn’t.

Eventually, after a few detours through Italy, Spain and Austria, the wine lands exactly where it probably should have all along: Gavi from Italy.

Key Themes- Blind tasting confidence vs reality

  • How structured tasting still turns into educated guessing

  • Old World white wine confusion (in a fun way)

  • The moment logic meets ego in a glass of wine

Even experienced tasters don’t “know” straight away.

They eliminate, argue, reassess, and slowly corner the wine until it gives up its identity.

Or in this case: until it quietly reveals itself as Gavi.

Why do some wines cost double or triple the price of others, even when they come from the same winery?

In this episode of Got Somme, we explore the difference between estate wines and single vineyard wines using two Pinot Noirs from Paringa Estate in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Together with Master Sommelier Carlos Santos, we break down the real factors behind wine pricing including terroir, vine age, production size, scarcity and winemaking techniques.

We reveal why some bottles command a much higher price and whether the difference is actually worth it in the glass.

What happens when you hand a sommelier a mystery glass and ask them to identify a world-class red wine — completely blind?

In this episode of Got Somme, we put the palate to the ultimate test with a stunning Rioja Gran Reserva 2016 that left us speechless (and one of us with actual goosebumps).

We got ours here: https://www.platinumfinewine.com.au/product/bodegas-lan-gran-reserva/

From deep ruby colour to lingering pencil-shaving tannins, this wine delivered layer after layer of complexity — black currant, black plum, truffle, leather, clove, nutmeg, star anise, and what our co-host could only describe as fresh pasta flour. The nose alone was worth the price of admission.

Was it Bordeaux? Was it Rioja? Tune in as we break down every clue, make the call, and reveal just how well a 10-year-old wine can hide its age.

Rioja Gran Reserva 2016

  • Region: Rioja, Spain
  • Variety: Tempranillo
  • Aging: Gran Reserva (60 months total — 24 months in oak, 24 months in bottle minimum)

Blind wine tasting is brutal. Even for a Master Sommelier.

In this episode of Got Somme, Carlos blind tastes a vibrant, medium-ruby red wine and reads the clues as Pinot Noir: juicy cherry, raspberry, Christmas cake spice, fine tannins, elegant structure, and that “Old World on the palate, New World on the nose” tension.

But then comes the reveal.

It’s actually Gamay from Beechworth, Victoria, a 2024 release, and it happens to be one of Angus’ favourite wines of all time.

This is the whole point of blind tasting: you follow the evidence, you make the call, and sometimes the wine still stitches you up.

If you’re learning wine, love Pinot Noir, or want to understand how sommeliers think in real time, this one is for you.

  • How to identify red wine blind using colour, aroma, tannin and acid
  • Pinot Noir vs Gamay: the overlap that tricks even pros
  • What “fine-grain tannins” and “perfume” really mean in practice
  • Why some Gamay can present like high-level Pinot

Hosted by Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos, Got Somme makes wine more fun, practical and less precious. New episodes weekly.

If the world’s best wines from France aren’t using oak… why do so many Chardonnays in Australia and the New World taste so oaky?

In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos take a deep dive into Chablis, the purest expression of Chardonnay. We blind taste three bottles from the same producer and vintage at three price points — Petit Chablis ($40), Chablis AOC ($48), and Chablis Premier Cru ($78) — to find out whether price really does equal quality.

Along the way, we break down:

  • Why Chablis tastes like oyster shells
  • The difference between Petit Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru
  • Left Bank vs Right Bank of the Serein River
  • When (and why) some producers start using oak
  • The real meaning of minerality in Chablis
  • Whether Premier Cru is actually worth the extra money

Angus kicks things off with a blind tasting challenge… and shockingly out-tastes a Master Sommelier to start 2026 in style.

If you think you don’t like Chardonnay, this episode might completely change your mind.

Fortified wines might be some of the most misunderstood wines in the world — often dismissed as “old-fashioned,” too sweet, or too strong. In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos dive deep into the world of Sherry, Port, and Pedro Ximénez, unpacking why these wines deserve far more attention than they get.

From the Sherry Triangle in southern Spain to the steep vineyards of the Douro Valley in Portugal, Carlos breaks down how fortified wines are made, why they’re aged the way they are, and how styles like Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Tawny Port, Ruby Port, LBV, and Vintage Port all differ.

Along the way, Angus shares a deeply personal memory of secretly drinking his grandmother’s sherry after school, while Carlos explains how some fortified wines can literally be hundreds of years old, growing thicker, darker, and more concentrated over generations.

They also tackle the big question: Why did fortified wines fall out of favour, and what would it take to make them cool again?

If you think fortified wines are uncool, overly sweet, or irrelevant — this episode might completely change your mind.

For the first time in Got Somme history, Angus is using a spittoon.
For the first time ever our Master Somm is tasting clean skin wine.

In this episode, Angus and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos put six $5 clean skin wines under the microscope to answer a question we get asked all the time:

Are clean skin wines actually drinkable, or are they only good for cooking?

With six bottles on the table, including Sauvignon Blanc, two Chardonnays, Rosé and Shiraz, Carlos gives an honest, no-nonsense assessment of what’s worth drinking, what’s best kept for the kitchen, and what should probably go straight down the sink.

What Is a Clean Skin Wine?

Clean skin wines are bottles sold without a branded label. Often they are the result of:

  • Oversupply from wineries
  • Wines not making the cut for a producer’s main label
  • Brand changes or ownership transitions
  • Excess wine needing to be cleared quickly

In some cases, these wines may even come from large, well-known producers who simply can’t move stock fast enough in the current market.

Wines Tasted in This Episode:

All wines were purchased for approximately $5 per bottle.

  • Sauvignon Blanc (2024)
  • Chardonnay (modern branded clean skin)
  • Chardonnay (traditional black-and-white clean skin)
  • Rosé
  • Shiraz

Each wine was assessed for aroma, palate, balance, drinkability and value for money.

The Results: Which $5 Wines Passed the Test? ✅ Drinkable at $5

According to Carlos, these wines are genuinely drinkable at the price point:

  1. Sauvignon Blanc
Fresh, fruity and recognisably Sauvignon Blanc in style. High acidity and noticeable sulfites, but surprisingly competitive in blind tasting against entry-level New Zealand styles.
  2. Chardonnay (traditional clean skin label)
Simple, short and one-dimensional, but balanced and inoffensive. Better on the palate than the nose and acceptable for casual drinking or food pairing at the price.
  3. Shiraz
The standout of the lineup. Peppery, dark fruit driven, recognisably Shiraz and the most enjoyable overall. Less aggressive sulfites due to tannin structure and the best value of the bunch.

❌ Best Left for Cooking

  • Rosé
  • Chardonnay (modern branded version)

These wines showed strong sulfite aromas, artificial flavours and lacked balance. Fine for slow cooking, sauces or reducing into a dish, but not recommended for drinking.

Does Wine Quality Matter When Cooking?

Carlos explains that for most everyday cooking, especially slow cooks like:

  • Bolognese
  • Stews
  • Braises

There is little difference between using a $5 bottle and a $100 bottle. Once wine is reduced and cooked for hours, nuance disappears. Save the good stuff for the glass.

Final Verdict on Clean Skin Wines

  • Clean skins can be drinkable
  • Oversupply in the wine industry means quality can trickle down the price ladder
  • At $5, expectations matter
  • Some are fine for drinking responsibly
  • Most are perfectly suitable for cooking

If you’re on a tight budget, a chilled glass from Carlos’s top three is acceptable. If you can stretch to $15–$20, you’ll still get more consistency and enjoyment.

Carlos’s Top Picks (In Order)

  1. Shiraz
  2. Chardonnay (traditional clean skin)
  3. Sauvignon Blanc

In the final episode of Got Somme for 2025, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos reflect on the year that was through the wines that defined it.

Rather than revisiting bottles already featured on the podcast, Carlos reveals a personal Wine of the Year driven by memory, place and emotion. A Champagne enjoyed on a beach at sunset, oysters and lobster on hand, and a moment that perfectly captured why wine is never just about what is in the glass. Angus counters with his own standout wine of the year, an Australian Semillon that completely exceeded expectations and cut through a line-up of elite wines to steal the show.

Along the way, they dive deep into Champagne ageing, Blanc de Blancs versus Brut styles, the importance of time on lees, the underrated ageing power of Australian Semillon, and why context and connection matter more than price tags.

The episode also marks the end of an enormous year for Got Somme, celebrating huge audience growth and setting the stage for what is coming in 2026.

In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos take youinto one of Italy’s most iconic wine rivalries: Barolo vs Barbaresco.

We break down everything from grape variety, regional differences, aging laws, price, aromas, palate structure, and why—despite their similarities—one of these wines consistently demands 30 to 40 percent more at retail.

And yes… we revisit the infamous first attempt at this episode, where a $500 bottle of Barolo turned out to be faulty. Cork taint. Wet cardboard. Pain.

Why is Barolo more expensive?

KEY MOMENTS & TAKEAWAYS

1. Barolo vs Barbaresco: What’s the Actual Difference?

Both wines are made from Nebbiolo, grown in Piedmont, but come from different sub-regions:

  • Barolo: Southwest of Alba, slightly cooler, higher altitude
  • Barbaresco: Northeast of Alba, warmer, more perfumed

Even though the geographical distance is small, the microclimate differences lead to two very different personalities in the glass.

2. Aging Laws That Drive the Price

Barolo DOCG

  • 38 months aging (At least 18 months in oak)
  • Reserva: 62 months aging minimum (at least 18 months in oak)

Barbaresco DOCG

  • 26 months aging (9 months in oak)
  • Reserva: 50 months aging (9 months in oak)

Holding wine for 3–5 years before it earns $1 dramatically affects price—and explains why Barolo is typically more expensive.

3. Appearance: What Nebbiolo Looks Like

Both wines show the classic:

  • Brick/rust rim
  • Light colour intensity
  • Transparent core

But today, the Barbaresco is noticeably lighter at the rim than the Barolo—something even Carlos says isn’t always the case.

4. Nose: The Aroma Clues

Barbaresco

  • More perfumed
  • More lifted red fruits
  • Floral (rose, dried flowers)
  • Slightly softer aromas

Barolo

  • More rustic and powerful
  • Leather
  • Tar and asphalt
  • Tobacco
  • Darker, deeper aromatics

Carlos also explains why Nebbiolo often shows “tar”—a hallmark of the grape and winemaking style.

5. Palate: Similar DNA, Different Personalities

Both wines show:

  • High tannin
  • High acidity
  • Elevated alcohol
  • Intense structure

But the Barbaresco presents as more elegant and delicate, while the Barolo pushes toward intensity, rustic tannin, and power.

As Angus puts it:

“They’re identical twins wearing different outfits.”

In this episode, Angus and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos dive into Mencia, a red grape variety from the northwest of Spain that sits beautifully between Pinot Noir, Gamay and Syrah. If you love Pinot but want something a little richer, or you are looking for a gateway into bolder reds, Mencia might be your new favourite varietal.

Carlos breaks down the regions of Bierzo and Galicia, how altitude and maritime influence shape the wine, and why Mencia has become a quiet favourite among sommeliers. Angus approaches the wine blind and shares how he assesses the colour, nose and palate as a novice working on his tasting skills.

Perfect for wine lovers who want to expand beyond the usual Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet.

When you pick up a bottle of champagne, do you know what the letters RM or NM mean? In this episode of Got Somme, Carlos breaks down the codes behind the label and why they completely change the flavour, quality, and story inside your glass.

From grower champagnes to the big houses like Krug, Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot, we explore what makes one bottle taste unique while another stays consistent year after year.

Carlos and Angus taste through five different styles — including Brut Nature, Rosé de Saignée, Grand Cru, and Vintage Champagne — explaining how sugar levels, vineyard ownership, and blending practices shape each glass.

Whether you’re a champagne lover, a curious drinker, or just want to sound like you know your stuff next time you’re at the bar, this episode is for you.

Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best?

After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks!

A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars:

A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk.

As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines!

Mount Mary is listed amongst the elite of Australian wine such as Penfolds 'Grange' and Henschke 'Hill of Grace' so why does it cost $165 and the others start at $900? We asked Chief Winemaker Sam Middleton

"I wonder what would have happened if we followed their price structure"

After visiting his local wine shop Angus O'Loughlin asked Sam what his thought were when he sees Mount Mary wines marked up 100% BEFORE corkage

"We treat our mailing list like family, what people do out of that is their decision and their choice"

This episode we are lucky to have a vertical of 'Quintet' the "flagship" of the Mount Mary wines with stories being shared about each vintage and the personal and professional reason why Sam brought them into the studio:

2012 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

2014 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

2017 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

2021 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

We've all heard about following in your father's footsteps but for Sam Middleton of Mount Mary Vineyard we wanted to know if expectation meant invitation

"There was probably never any doubt that I would end up doing what I'm doing now, wine was always a big part of my life"

Taking our conversation on the Journey through working at Gevrey-Chambertin and cutting his teeth at Coldstream Hills and Dominique Portet before returning to his families estate as Chief Winemaker

"Once you're back you're very unlikely to leave, you wanna try and get as many different experiences as possible"

Imposter Syndrome, stamping his mark on the label and the next generation of winemakers are all discussed while everyone enjoys a stunning

2015 Mount Mary Triolet. "It was a fantastic Yarra vintage, probably one of the best I've been involved in"

2021 Mount Mary Chardonnay "Great acid, great focus, great freshness, great drive but still have flavour and concentration and personality"

If you can enjoy a glass of MM alongside listening or watching this episode.

Raise a glass to Sam Middleton and bottoms up

Have a cracking bottle of Red Wine and you don't know if you should decant it?

If you should - how long for?

Master Sommelier Carlos Santos is here to debunk the decanting myths and describe the many benefits, including separating the sediment from the liquid. This is especially helpful for red wines. Decanting also enhances a wine's flavour by exposing it to oxygen, and allowing it to breathe.

In this episode of Got Somme: We decant one wine into 3 different vessels to explain the process and why once decanted we can assess 3 different experiences.

Get ready to find out how to be rid of your wine dregs aka sediment and give your cherished wines their best chance.

Embarking his 20th vintage in Yarra Valley Toolangi winemaker Kaspar Hermann knows a thing or two about getting the best from a Chardonnay grape.

Marrying into a wine making family, and taking a viticulture course himself in his teens, wine is where he was destined to be and after vintages with Seville Estate, Rochford and Mount Mary, Toolangi came calling. Taking over the reigns from legendary winemakers Rick Kinzbrunner, Franco D'Anna, David Bicknell and Willy Lunn his first vintage in 2019 was made somewhat easier by starting during the harvest and the pressure of making calls about the canopy and crop being delayed until 2020.

In this episode of Got Somme: Master Sommelier Carlos Santos and wine lover Angus O'Loughlin talk about the Toolangi Takeover, the importance of 'F Block Chardonnay' and the world stage Kaspar dreams to take his wines.

Chardonnay can be a divisive wine when really it shouldn't! If you don't like Chardonnay chances are you probably just don't like over oaked Chardonnay.

The grape variety itself is actually neutral and if you were to taste a Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay next to a William Fevre Petit Chablis you would be mistaken for thinking they are two completely different grape varietals.

The difference? Oak

One with plenty and one without any!

In this episode of Got Somme, Yarra Valley local Brenden Robnik aka 'The Wine Animal' joins us in studio to deep dive his favourite Australian wine region while also looking at the complex differences altitude can make on Chardonnay separated only by a few kilometres.

Disagree that the Yarra Valley is the best wine region in Victoria?

Late last year Got Somme host Angus O'Loughlin was asked via our Instagram

"What bottle would you cellar for ten years"

He held up a 2021 Demi Shiraz that he was drinking in that moment.

That led to a phone call to Syrahmi owner Adam Foster who was inspecting the vines and they confirmed his studio attendance as first winemaker on the podcast in 2024!

Bottles brought into studio:

2022 Demi Shiraz

2017 Lala

2018 LaLa

2022 Syrahmi 'Angus'

2004 Syrahmi (first ever vintage)

A bit of Syrahmi: The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born. Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage.

The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!"

The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours.

Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed.

Raise a glass... but not a flute

Imagine being gifted a wine and not realising it's value - they make less than 300 bottles each year!

Hiding in Angus' cellar at home was this bottle of wine and YOU could win it. After discovering the gem in his collection while speaking with Yarra Yering winemaker Sarah Crowe the boys decide to deep dive the world of 'Carrodus' Wines bringing this Masterclass on a true Yarra Yering icon.

This wine isn't made any year. It's created out of a small, historic parcel of vines on the Yarra Yering site. It's only made in exceptional conditions and only when the grapes aren't required for the No1 or No2 wines.

Also listen out for the vintage Sarah describes as "The Goat" and then keep your eyes out for it on auction, bottle shops or wine lists.

In 2018 fire destroyed the restaurant and cellar door, containing $500,000 worth of wine, of famed Australian winery '10 Minutes by Tractor'.

Today owner Martin Spedding sits down with Master Sommelier and Got Somme Host Carlos Santos and co-host Angus O'Loughlin to talk about the tragic day and how they emerged from the ashes to win 'Wine List of the Year' and named as one of Victorias best restaurants.

Make sure you stick around to the end to find out why Martin fought the insurance company to hold onto a $40,000 bottle of 2000 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Conti Grand Cru and what his plans are with the famed or should we say "flamed" bottle.

"Corked" wine does not mean a wine with small pieces of cork floating around in the glass. It is a word for a wine that has become contaminated with cork taint. In the worst instances, the wine tastes of nothing but mould – which should be obvious.

BUT What if it isn't?

How do you identify when a bottle of wine has gone bad?

The FEAR of opening a corked bottle of wine sits in the back of our mind the moment we open a bottle. Compound that by the fact this bottle cost us over $120!

However, when you’ve never had a corked wine before, how would you know that you’ve thrown your hard earned on spoiled wine?

We are here to educate and alleviate that fear as we accidently experience first hand what a corked wine smells and tastes like, demonstrate how it can be easy to distinguish between a regular bottle and the steps you can take when asking for a refund.

NEVER in over 60 Episodes has this happened OR SHOULD IT!

"Holy S***"

Surprising a Master Sommelier with his FAVOURITE wine! 4 different vintages 🤯🍷

Master Sommelier Carlos Santos has been talking about Wendouree Winery in Clare Valley, South Australia on nearly every episode of Got Somme to date. So when we got the chance to surprise him with a flight of 4 different vintages and varietals from the brand he said "NO F***ING WAY".

The Wendouree vineyards were established in 1893, and its distinctive, high-quality wines are known to have an indefinite shelf life despite their little production. They have grown to be somewhat of an Australian cult favourite among savvy wine drinkers. The only way to get them when they go on sale is via the mailing list, which is still one of the most difficult to join in Australia.

We recorded this episode towards the end of last year but felt it didn't match the seriousness of the podcast trying to find the best value bottle of wine under $30.

To celebrate upcoming Season 2 of the podcast we thought we would share this as a bonus because Carlos' reaction was so good to finding out the trick we had played on him 🤣

If you thought the podcast was funny make sure you check it out on YouTube here to see the reaction of a Master Sommelier drinking wine from a bladder.

Our FINAL $30 or under bottle of wine has been hand selected by Master Sommelier Carlos Santos.

Why this bottle?

Carlos wanted to find a similar bottle that could knock the Chateau Haut Madrac, our current #1, off the top of the podium.

They're both traditional Bordeaux blends and both influenced by coastal climates. Carlos knowing the Vasse Felix winemaker thought it could topple our old world classic but can it shake up the competition before next weeks 'finale'?

We put two Bordeaux Chateau wines up against each other battling out for the BEST BOTTLE UNDER $30

We firstly assess our current #1 wine under $30 the 2017 Chateau Haut Madrac against the just released 2018 vintage and the results surprised us!

Then we take the challenge to a bottle that on paper reads a similar story:

  • Bordeaux
  • Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon Blend
  • 2018 vintages
  • 13.5% alcohol

BUT It becomes a very VERY different story once the bottles are poured into the glass!

Usually we match wine with food but in this episode of Got Somme we match the location of where this is best enjoyed, if you don't have a bedtime or young children that is!

A classic dry white from near the mouth of the Loire river on the Atlantic coast of France. The grapes are gently pressed and the young wine is allowed to sit on lees for 6 months to bring out that wonderful briney note fans of Muscadet so love.

"Interesting to get a Sancerre labelled 'Sauvignon Blanc' - they are so driven to sell their wine to the export market because back home everyone knows Sancerre is Sauvignon Blanc." - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos

We apologise!

This podcast is on a mission to find the best quality bottle of wine UNDER $30 and this week we splurged and spent $35.99 at the time of recording. Why? Master Sommelier Carlos Santos was interested in trying this bottle because it was made by John Duval, one of only four Penfolds chief winemakers, who was also in charge of developing Australia's most well-known export, "Grange."

We genuinely hope you don't mind reaching a little further into your pockets this week as we learn about "SGM." Stay tuned for an interesting explanation of why this isn't labeled "GSM."

"I would say for Pinot Noir it has a deep intensity! Compared to tasting a Shiraz then no, it's pale, but we are trying a Pinot Noir which is quite deep even in colour" - Carlos Santos MS

The first time our podcast has circled back to the same wine varietal - Pinot Noir. A very different style to what we have previously tasted hence why we picked this bottle.

Deep red fruit, no freshness, overripe and a jammy nose but with a different effect on the palate.

Enjoy the glass, bottle and episode

Cheers 🍇

"Domaine Pichot Coteau de la Biche Vouvray " - Apparently we are speaking English!

This wine is the perfect bottle to take around to your friends to show off some culture with a drop rarely chosen from the shelves.

Sweet flavours on the nose with cinnamon and bruised apple and high acid and tropical tastes on the palate.

"It is a very good expression of a Vouvray" - Carlos Santos MS

"I think it's unfair to drink this young bottle of wine" - Carlos Santos MS

This episode helps to distinguish youthful wine just by its appearance and differentiate Semillon from Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

It's also the first time the term "sulphur" has been used when describing the wines we've tasted on our journey to find Australia's best $30 bottle.

Everyone used to bring Sauvignon Blanc to dinner parties ten years ago... and then we stopped. Why?

What is it so powerful on the nose? Why does Angus smell gasoline?

"Yering Station is a very old winery dating back 1838 and I like their wines, I think (Little Yering Chardonnay) it's well made and I think it's fair for the price. I think it's a good $20 bottle of wine." - Carlos Santos MS

Carlos is one of less than 300 Master Sommelier's in the world helping us to distinguish smells and tastes of affordable wine as we search for the best $30 bottle available in the country. In this episode he teaches us the importance of oak and why most bottles of wine in the world don't use it!

'Got Somme' is a podcast for wine lovers who know nothing about what's in their glass.

Our mission is to find the best bottle of $30 wine using Master Sommelier Carlos' ungodly talent with fermented grapes.

Carlos will aim to teach a novice wine enthusiast Angus how to discern a good wine from a bad and empower listeners with a skill set good enough to choose the table wine next time you have friends over.
