There is no hiding from the fact that when you write songs from a place of honesty and authenticity some people will not like it.

They won't like the music.

They won't like your point of view.

They won't like the fact that you are audacious enough to do whatever the f*** you want.

You making YOUR music p*sses some people off.

How do I know this?

Because I received an explicit email directly from one of those people.

It completely broke me.

I mean I literally STOPPED writing songs as a result.

Of course, I am here today with a beautiful back-catalogue of incredible music in my wake that I am proud of and can completely stand behind 💪

But the scar is still there.

And although I agree that opinions are important and should be shared there is a huge caveat to my POV - that those opinions contribute to our world as a whole with a positive end-result in mind.

So someone telling me "I don't like your music" just doesn't fly with me anymore, sorry.

Opinion DENIED. 🙅🏽‍♀️

It's useless information.

No, it's about you, the artist, making a choice to express yourself against all the narratives insistent on talking you down.

That's the heart of rebellion in music, and I'm all for it.

I recently asked my community "Why is it important to YOU to finish your songs?"

Here are some of their responses...

✨ To feel a sense of achievement

✨ Because it's my personal goal to share them and I can't do that if they aren't finished

✨ To understand what thoughts and emotions need to be released. And then understand how I can help others while helping myself.

✨ To see a possibility of performing them live.

✨ Because not finishing them keeps me small

✨ I owe it to myself and the song!! I have a few unfinished songs that almost make me feel anxious/guilty!!

✨ To get over my fear of releasing my own music

✨ To face the imperfections of finished songs and stop piling up ideas.

✨ To connect with people and not feel alone.

Such powerful and compelling reasons.

And even though we have these reasons and motivation I still get a question around the subject of finishing songs multiple times a week from my students and members of my community. I even ran a poll inside our Facebook Group and over 40% of songwriters agreed that they needed help finishing their songs.

The truth is, finishing songs is hard.

So, I ran a workshop! You even may have seen some of the emails last week.

The workshop was SO popular and went down SO well that I decided to record a podcast all about the subject.

Many songwriters say that it's only once they manage to complete work, and complete work often, that they feel legitimate. That they see results. That they find opportunities come knocking.

Just wrapped up an immersive 5-day journey of authentic songwriting, and let me tell you, it was a whirlwind.

I found myself holding space for fellow songwriters, showering them with support and encouragement – something I now see as my 'mission'. There's an electric buzz in the air, fuelled by TONS of breakthroughs and transformative mindset shifts.

But it's undeniably intense.

You know, this intensity can be exhilarating, like the heat of summer, but just as autumn gracefully arrives, we all need a moment to slow down.

Making music is not dangerous.

Avoid being drawn into the illusion of lack. You may feel you don't have enough—whether it's confidence, knowledge, skill set, money, gear, time, or equipment. But the voice inside you, echoing these doubts, is simply trying to keep you safe. It perceives your music-making as risky, often because you haven't ventured far into it.

My album reflects my journey.

I am scared; I feel it in my body. However, I've faced this fear many times before, countering every doubt with my experience. I see it for what it truly is—an inner creative force, an artist within me, a part that dances with joy. Simultaneously, there's an internal parent telling me to be quiet, to stop talking, to be less ME, to grow up, and to pursue a "real" job.

NO THANK YOU.

Here is what I tell myself:

Start from where you currently stand, with the resources you possess. You can achieve more than you imagine with what you have. Can you play an instrument or use your voice? Can you sing? Learn, grow, and take control of your life—because you have all you need.
Seek guidance. You're listening to me, someone who has positioned themselves as a guide, mentor, support, and authority figure. Authentic Songwriting begins this Friday, and I invite you to join. My course commences in October, and you're welcome to be a part of it. Alternatively, seek a mentor, ask a friend, or find a community (I even offer a free one).
Take a chance on yourself. The return on investment for creative risks is boundless; you can never accrue creative debt or a creative deficit. The more you create, the more you comprehend the intricacies of it all. Read books on the subject, start an Instagram account dedicated solely to your songwriting, and follow inspiring accounts. Begin a YouTube channel and start sharing your thoughts.

You are the most secure investment you'll ever make, and once you realise that, everything will change.

Remember, your art is not dangerous. Fear is a normal companion on the journey to exploring new realms and landscapes of creativity.

Wow - I do!

I recently signed up for Courageous Voice, a six-week program about showing up online authentically and speaking honestly to the people who matter to you (i.e. YOU! 🥰)

But showing up as myself online, being authentic and real means that I will not be everyone's cup of tea ☕️

But all of that is slowly changing (hence this email) and I'm so happy I'm going through the program. It's allowing me to rediscover who I am, what I'm all about, and what I stand for.

This is why I set up Authentic Songwriting.

I know how many of us are struck by fear and self-judgment when we sit down to write our songs, and it's just an icky and painful experience.

And it's not super easy to ‘just be yourself’ ignore all those feeling and and 'do it anyway' (bad advice).

So, I created a 5-day workshop space for us all to practice writing our songs and be more authentic, together.

I truly believe that genuine, caring community is one of the most powerful ways to feel safe, feel seen and heard, and feel more capable of writing and sharing your songs, your art, your truth.

wherever you are at right now with your songwriting, take a deep breath, you are doing absolutely fine. You are exactly where you need to be.

Ouch!

It hurts.

It’s painful and many times damaging when people express their lack of belief in what we are doing, especially if we ourselves are still on the journey of trying to figure out how to do it.

Dear songwriter, if you have ever experienced someone actively discouraging you from making your music then I want you to know that you are not alone.

Inside my private Radical Songwriting Academy community we have been having a discussion around this subject.

My parents don’t support me.

I put off pursuing my passion for music the majority of my adult life because my parents told me to get my head out the clouds and get a REAL job

I've fought my parents pretty much my whole life over very similar issues.

I think people can also fall into the 'Genius Model' view. They don't understand that the great musicians had to work at their craft throughout their lives too and it didn't just happen magically. It took time, effort, highs and lows and, most of all, persistence.

I veered away from the music creation path for a good 8 or so years. I did some stuff I enjoyed and learned a lot from but still.... NEVER EVER AGAIN. No matter what. I need it like oxygen.

I've been told all my life that I can't do stuff but now I've learnt not to listen to those accusing tongues. At the end of the day only you can live your life and your dreams.

These are some of the comments from students sharing their experiences of other people doubting their choice to pursue music.

And if you joined my Facebook Live this morning inside the Radical Songwriting Community you will have saw many other songwriters joining in the conversation.

Inside this week’s episode I offer a few ways to reframe when someone openyl questions, doubts or dismisses your dreams and goals of pursuing music. I hope this will help as a soothing balm and a way to open the doors towards true, heart-led inquiry around this situation.

EP#27: Why Is Collaboration So Scary?

Have you ever struggled with co-writing or collaboration? Maybe you are not too sure where to start with it all? Or perhaps you’r feeling some anxiety or fear around moving into that realm?

Inside my Radical Songwriting Facebook Group we have been chatting about collaboration and it’s been a really amazing conversation.

“I have not done a lot of cowriting and when I have, I have struggled to find that connection/chemistry with someone.

Has anyone else ever felt that?

Some of the answers were absolute GOLD…

It's a learning curve. For me it was putting any ego away and it being about the song.

There's no bad ideas, just ones that aren't right for the song and so on.

Sometimes songs happen kinda fast and sometimes they materialize more slowly.

Having fun is important.

Something that can often be overlooked is that we are all actually excellent resources for each other. We are all facilitators of each other’s learning.

Dear Songwriter, have you released music before?

Let’s talk about that sinking feeling when you realise tens of thousands of songs are uploaded to Spotify every day and you may feel like your precious song will just be another drop of water in a vast ocean of music. It can feel like an uphill struggle to gain any traction at all.

We then obsess over the numbers, streams, likes, shares, follows and compare ourselves to other artists based on their numbers.

Quickly we can find ourselves swimming in the shame of low vanity-metrics and that is an ocean we do not want to be in. The currents are strong and before you know there is no sign of land.

First, what is ‘people pleasing’? People-pleasing involves putting someone else's needs ahead of your own. People-pleasers are highly attuned to others and are often seen as agreeable, helpful, and kind.

For years I called myself empathetic, I am just really intuitive to other people’s feelings, it’s like a gift I have. I just REALLY care about others, I am a nice person goddamn it!

Okay whilst some of that is true it didn’t explain why at the end of the day I felt so rubbish, exhausted and utterly alone.

I mean I am giving so much to so many and here I am resenting it.

This week on the podcast we are talking about How People Pleasing Destroys Creativity.

You are NEVER being selfish for wanting to pursue your art.

It is a natural and necessary part of being a human. Of being alive.

So if you need permission please take this as the permission you need to take some time for yourself and your art because your time is so super precious. Start saying yes to you. Your music. Your work. Your creativity. Your love for yourself.

Music is healing, it’s loyal. When you start to give it the time and energy it really will look after you in the most beautiful and fulfilling ways!

The comparison trap... don't worry, we have all fell into it at times. I promise you, even the most confident of musicians have found themselves deep in the grips of questioning themselves and their worth in relation to other artists.

Did you know, we can ghost ourselves? Our artistic selves.

Do you remember all those promises you made to yourself once upon a time? (I will make this album, I will go on stage and play these songs, one day this, one day that…)

Then you exited from stage left, in a cloud of smoke! Never to be seen again. And your poor artist inside was the equivalent of anxiously checking their phones to see if you were thinking of them, if you will ever text them back.

Do you see how unfair this is? How cowardly? How painful?!

We put so much energy into considering other people’s actions and behaviours that we can forget to hold that mirror up to ourselves.

So, are you ghosting your artistic self?

Well, if the answer is yes then that’s the first step to take in repairing this life long relationship. The relationship with your inner artist will never end, you can rest assured, happy and confident that your artistic self will always be there for you, they are constantly tugging at your shirt sleeves, I know they are, you feel it too right?

[SEASON ONE FINALE]

I love to think about life in season, cycles and phases.

Our experiences wrap themselves up and over then over again, sometimes multiple times round before we finally learn the lesson, understand the sign or truly FEEL the experience.

And that's okay.

What season of creativity are you in?

Inward? Outward? Creating? Releasing? Growing? Learning? Understanding? Believing?

My current season is one full of creation - but creation of something a little different from my usual mode of music making.

My newest (and most beloved!) creation is Radical Songwriting Academy. 10 weeks of music development, creative growth, story telling, skill building, community connections and so so SO much more.

The doors for enrolment are open right now but not for much longer - they close at 9pm GMT Thursday 10th February.

As a result of this new season I are taking a much needed break from the podcast. I love this podcast dearly, it's been one of the best decisions I have ever made!

I am easing my way out of a 20-week season and into a new space for a little while, but we will be back and ready to go again on April 7th.

In order to grow and develop anything in life we need to visit it often and do so with an element of objectivity so we can mark our progress along the way.

Goals act as a measuring stick. These written down dreams propel you forward. They can reinspire you and hold you accountable and best of all, goals allow you to define your own version of success.

Why NOT set some goals? If you don't like the word 'goals' then change it. They can be 'plans', 'projects', 'active dreams', anything you wish.

After a show one night, I shared my dream of becoming a film composer with the musicians I had just shared a stage with.

I was expecting support and looking for connection, advice and guidance from these older, more experience musicians.

But their response was devastating, shocking and crippling.

They all just stood there laughing at me.

I felt so small.
So stupid.
Humiliated and defeated.

Recently I asked a question in a songwriting Facebook Group: what are your thoughts and feelings around music theory?

"I could definitely use some music theory skills in order to better communicate with other composers."
"I've not a clue about music theory other than what I learned in primary school via recorder lessons!"

I believe we can learn all we need to know by listening and visualisation of the keyboard as opposed to pages of lines and dots, numbers and codes.

Self confidence can be a real rollercoaster.

There are many reasons you may be experiencing a 'dip' in confidence and feeling a little insecure. But, if you find yourself questioning your work, your worth, every note and word of lyric - to the point where you no longer even enjoy writing music- then this episode ifs for you.

Money money money!

I don't know about you but where I come from, money is everyones favourite subject to complain about and no one's favourite to actually discuss.

One question I get often, mainly from taxi drivers, when I say I am a musician is

"So, do you make a living out of that then...?" or "are you famous?" (which I find hilarious!!)

As a culture (I am from Scotland) we do not talk about money unless we are complaining about having none.

It can all feel very hush hush and secret. We fear that disclosing our ways to pay the rent are in some way going to make us seem arrogant, or up our selves. Some people even worry their 'space' in the industry will be taken away from them if they share a new idea or tactic that's working.

But I believe that by being open and honest about how we earn money through music can bring us closer together and get rid of the old aged fable that 'luck' is the only factor involved in a successful music career

Spoiler: it's not luck, it's hard work.

I will set the scene for you...

You put aside the time, made sure there were no distractions. Got your lunch prepared early, the coffee is brewing and finally, FINALLY, you get to sit down and write some music for a while.

Bliss.

It starts off great.

A cool verse melody just falls out of your head. You're really digging the chord structure you just came up with. You may even be excitedly suspicious that this very day could be THE day when you write one of the best songs you've ever written.

Then it hits.

The doubt.

The sinking feeling in your stomach get stronger. You hate it. Thoughts like "this is terrible, I can never show this to someone, oh my god, I've stolen this melody 100%, I'm a fraud..." go through your head.

And then, you stop.
You walk away.
You give in.
It's all just a bit too much.
