@BEOYouth | Hi, this is Dr. Flemming. The news broke the morning of April 10th just before this class, the class behind the podcast, started for the day. OJ Simpson had died. Our student body president, Kamar, interrupted the class to be sure I knew. I knew. Understanding the generational gap, I wasn't sure if these students, who were born in 2006 and turning 18 in 2024, more than 40 years after OJ's NFL days and nearly 30 years after the "trial of the century" knew anything about OJ, his career or the trial. So I asked them. "Who was OJ Simpson?"

@BEOYouth | On May 25, 2021, my class and I reflected on the somber one year "anniversary" of the murder of George Floyd. I was physically there and brought the class with me on Zoom. His lynching reignited the fire in many of our bellies to fight for the cause of Black lives. Listen here as my class and I experience the place where they killed him, a brief walk and talk inside of the store where he was, and, ironically, a shooting at the very intersection where he was killed by police.

The assignment was to give a speech/talk on either a social justice issue or on joy and happiness. Please listen to two previous episodes that feature talks from this same class session, "Personal Joy and Happiness" and "Missing and Possibly Exploited." In this episode, the students talk (or rap) about social issues that matter to them.
Recently the students in Comm101 at King (Philly) did some in-class speeches or talks. The choice was either a social justice issue or joy and happiness. Three students chose happiness at the time of the recording. Two are represented in this episode.
Zaja has one question, where is her god-sister? In this episode, Zaja is giving a talk in class as part of an in-class assignment. She gets candid about her god-sister's disappearance, possible sighting, and how Black women just tend to "go missing" in this country. Nahjae, a senior at Martin Luther King High School, did her senior project on the Tulsa Race Massacre & Black Wall Street. A former student of Comm101, she graciously agreed to return to the podcast to discuss her knowledge and why she chose the subject.
With no official preparation time for this discussion, Dr. Flemming proposes an impromptu episode on this topic towards the end of class one day. Is is fair to bring up "Black-on-Black" crime in a discussion on police violence against Black people? 11th and 12th grade students at Martin Luther King High School discuss it.
My class and I had the chance to sit with one of staff members at King, Ms. Lee. Ms. Lee was a student at Barratt Junior High School when Dr. King spoke there in October of 1967. She recalls that day and also gives passes some sound wisdom on to us. Forgive first couple of minutes of low sound quality.

The discussion then broadens to Black lives mattering, in general, before coming back to the single officer being charged with not killing Breonna Taylor.
