We all have bad habits. Whether it's turning to comfort food when we're sad or taking a cigarette break when we're stressed, habits take practice and repetition to form, and the same is true for breaking them. Today, we will be talking about the neuroscience of bad habits. This episode will be organized in three parts: first, I will explain why we form bad habits; following, we will dive into the structure of habit formation and execution; and lastly, I will provide a three-step framework on how to break bad habits and replace them with positive alternatives.
Since the dawn of philosophy, dreams have perplexed philosophers and poets about what dreams merely mean. Thankfully, in the recent decades, dreams have come under the gaze of brilliant neuroscientists as the field’s central unsolved mysteries of whether dreams serve a more practical functional purpose or something else. Again, there is much more to discover in this topic about why we dream and we just got started.
The public discourse in fitness nutrition has always placed a huge emphasis on macronutrients because they are the core building blocks of energy, muscle building, and bodily maintenance, so in today’s episode, we will be focusing on specific micronutrients, namely, magnesium, sodium, and potassium and their benefits that these minerals have on performance.
How do we leverage biological rhythms for both focus and recovery? In this day and age, we spend a majority of our time thinking of getting focused, but it’s also integral to devote some time every day to getting better at accessing your calm states that will leverage your biological rhythms to become even more productive.
As we’re wrapping up our micronutrient series here, I wanted to dedicate the last episode to calcium and phosphorus, as several of your hardworking organs contribute to that intimate intertwining of the two elements by facilitating intestinal absorption, bone remodeling, and renal excretion and reabsorption. Exciting stuff!

We’ve previously briefly chatted about vitamin D in another episode, but I wanted us to go deeper about this fat-soluble vitamin. We will be discussing mechanism and its impacts on calcium and phosphate.
Today, we will be discussing vitamin A, which many of you know to associate with carrots and good vision. Vitamin A, which is just a generic term to describe compounds that have the biological activity of retinol, also has many other roles related to immunity, metabolism, and cell function!
Today, we will be exploring vitamin K which is an antihemorrhagic factor meaning it will help clot blood. Sources of Vitamin K include green veggies such as kale, spinach, and brussell sprouts. Vitamin K does this as a cofactor to convert Glu residues to Gla residues that can bind to calcium ions by clotting factors (such as prothrombin, factors 7, 9, and 10), so that coagulation complexes on phospholipids can be established at the site of an injury. We need activation of clotting factors as well as calcium binding sites in the clotting factors for coagulation to happen!
Today, we will be exploring vitamin E. This fat-soluble vitamin serves as another antioxidant just like vitamin C, and it will trap lipophilic free radicals by breaking down uncontrolled free chain reactions in plasma, red blood cells, and tissues. Also, it plays a role in maintaining the integrity of your membrane!
We always talk about how vitamin C from citrus fruits helps with immune functioning. In today’s episode, we will break down how vitamin C mechanistically works by donating and reducing electrons as ascorbate (its other name). You will learn how vitamin C plays integral roles in collagen, carnitine, and norepinephrine synthesis as well as protecting you from free radicals and reactive oxygen species.
This month, I am releasing a special micronutrient series, where I will be breaking down the fundamentals of vitamin and mineral metabolism so that you can understand its mechanism and subsequent impact on your wellbeing.
Continuing with choline, we will be discussing the mechanisms of how this vitamin helps with cell maintenance, nervous system function, and DNA synthesis.
This month, I am releasing a special micronutrient series, where I will be breaking down the fundamentals of vitamin and mineral metabolism so that you can understand its mechanism and subsequent impact on your wellbeing.
We continue with folate, and its superpower of donating and accepting one-carbon units. This episode is all about diving deep into the complex mechanism for my lovely science aficionados, relating it to making the building blocks of DNA and methylation of DNA.
This month, I am releasing a special micronutrient series, where I will be breaking down the fundamentals of vitamin and mineral metabolism so that you can understand its mechanism and subsequent impact on your wellbeing.
Today, we are going to be chatting about our friends, riboflavin and thiamin which are B vitamins, just like our buddy niacin. This episode is going to be split in halves regarding riboflavin and thiamin. In short, riboflavin is needed for mechanistic electron transfer whereas thiamin is needed to make nucleotides.
This month, I am releasing a special micronutrient series, where I will be breaking down the fundamentals of vitamin and mineral metabolism so that you can understand its mechanism and subsequent impact on your wellbeing.
Starting with niacin, we will be exploring how our strong bodies use this vitamin to turn your yummy food into ENERGY. We will dive into sources of niacin, consequences of niacin deficiency, mechanisms related to NAD/NADH, enzymes that help keep your niacin levels steady via two wonderful biochemical pathways.
Fat loss is a challenging feat for many people, and as it may sound like a simple act of controlling your caloric balance to create an energy deficit, it doesn’t always work this way. There are many factors at play, and one of them is due to a phenomenon called adaptive thermogenesis.

It’s a general consensus in nutrition research that there’s no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan. Of course, many factors are at play, but one reason why certain meal plans work for one person but not the other may have to do with human genetics. This, is, nutrigenomics. Nutrigenomics, which means nutrition plus genomics, is a pretty fascinating cutting-edge science that reveals how one can create the best path in health. It’s essentially the field that includes both the study of how the whole body responds to macro and micro nutrients as well as how single genes and food compounds will interact.

Today’s episode is going to be split into two halves. The first half is going to be diving deep into the cellular biology of creatine, and you don’t even need to know this material. But because there are so many “experts” that provide such inaccurate information about biochemistry, my goal here is to walk you through the cellular mechanism that creatine plays in our body. The second part of the podcast will be about using creatine as a tool to build lean muscle. Commonly known as the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D is produced by the body in response to our skin being exposed to sunlight, and yes, it does also naturally occur in some foods such as fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy and grain products. Today, we’re going to be learning a lot. We’re going to be talking about vitamin D deficiency, what the gold standard of measuring vitamin D is, the difference between vitamin D2 and D3, the HPA axis, more about molecular and cellular neuroscience related to vitamin D, and many suggestive animal model studies that reveal the importance of vitamin D in human health.

Just as you are about to sit down to do some work, you suddenly hear a ding: a text notification from your phone. Do you read the text or do you get to work, suppressing the urge to check it? If you are able to suppress the urge, that is known as delay of gratification, which is defined by the act of resisting an impulse to take an immediately available reward in the hope of getting a deeper valued reward in the future. Why are there some people better at delaying gratification than others? In today’s episode, we will explore how the pathways of delayed gratification create that trait.
