Jump to 25min 57sec for reflections and questions to test your thinking and help you put the learnings into action:

The focus from Part I with Justin Robinson is on three themes: 1. Awareness and 2. Adopting a Mindset of Self-Disruption

Theme 1: “Take care of what’s important to you”
Theme 2: “Be Resourceful”
Theme 3: “Adopt a social diet”

Let’s start with Theme 1: “Take care of what’s important to you”

Justin showed to us the importance of family and shared this in his own unique way. In the daily grind though, we can lose sight of what's important to us. And what was important and clear for Justin during this filmmaking process was, in the end, the documentary was for him. This guided his actions and he produced something that has impacted millions around the world. “Taking care of what’s important to you” is about clarity of what you value most in life. When you have that level of awareness it's much easier to say no to things that are not a priority to you…a lot of things in life compete for our time, but what’s truly important.

Here are some questions to consider:

  • Firstly, what are the three most important to you? I’d like for you to dig digger than the obvious family response as well. Think about other things that are important: your own health and wellbeing, it is a hobby, is it time learning a new skill?
  • And for each of these three things, how well are you taking care of each of these?
Score them from 0 = you’re neglecting them, to 10 = you’re giving them exactly the time they deserve. What more can you do, today, to shift your focus to these important things?

Theme 2: Be resourceful
Justin didn’t have a rich uncle funding the documentary. Justin could have easily said, “it’s too hard…I don’t have the money to produce this…I don’t have the time…the excuses could go on…but instead, Justin took the first important step and that was he made “the” decision to make this documentary. That was the start of how Find your purpose and be resourceful – no rich uncle funding the film.

Who is the most resourceful person you know? You know the kind of person who just gets stuff done, no fanfare, just finds the resources and opportunities to shine and achieve great things.

Secondly, what is it about them that makes them resourceful…? How would you describe their mindset? What is it about their behavior that set them apart from others you know what are note as resourceful?

Theme 3. Adopt a social diet.

…when you commit to your passions, and trying to achieve greatness in your art and work, and in the process help define who you are as a person, you need to forego certain social gatherings, as Justin puts it, implement a social diet. Through your choices, “take your life into your own hands”.

Justin’s experience was an experiment of not looking down or looking back, as he shared, “when you’re on a tight rope between mountains, stay motivated and focus on the finish line.”

So, what are the social interactions you can forego to focus on your goals and passions? If you know, back to theme 1, what’s important to you, what choices can you make about the kind of people you want around you? And how can you help each other achieve your respective goals?

Their message is simple, sort out your Spenditude, your attitude to money, and you will take a big step forward to gaining the financial freedom you deserve.

20min 52sec Reflections and questions to test your thinking and help you put the learnings into action:

The focus is on three themes from Part II: 1. Awareness and 2. Adopting a Mindset of Self-Disruption

  1. Awareness
So, here’s a few questions to ponder...
When it comes to awareness…how would you describe your attitude to money?
How would someone who knows you well describe your attitude to money?
If you’re not sure…ask some one who knows you well.
Are you ready to accept ‘your’ current attitude to money and do something to change for the better and/or keep doing what already works for you?

  2. Adopt A Mindset of Self-Disruption.
Paul said it succinctly, that the “Window of change is open during times of disruption…we’re less likely to consider change when times are good.” So, my question for you is and closely linked to the awareness theme…if you know your relationship with money, and accept you need to make change…then, “how will you disrupt yourself?” “How will you adopt a life-changing mindset of self-disruption to keep you focused and on track to your financial freedom.”

Their message is simple, sort out your Spenditude, your attitude to money, and you will take a big step forward to gaining the financial freedom you deserve.

22min 35sec Reflections and questions to test your thinking and help you put the learnings into action:

The focus is on three themes from Part I: Adaptability, Ego, Your Mind’s Narrative.

Let’s start with adaptability: Paul and Janine mentioned, that your Spenditude, your attitude to money, may vary depending on what is happening in your life. They shared their personal stories and the impact it had on them, but what stood out for me was – when we are faced with life’s challenges, we make the necessary behavioural changes to adapt and cope. But how often do we pro-actively adopt, defender behaviours in times of crises? So, the question for to consider: “During tough times, and we’re not talking about financial hardship, we’re talking about life’s challenges…how do you adapt your attitude to money? Your spending habits? Do you spend more when you’re stressed?

The second theme is Ego. Where do we start with this one?! And as adult, it can be uncomfortable being challenged about the way you manage your finances, being forced to reflect on what is your attitude to money. And ultimately the impact it’s having on your life and the lives of those around you. Ego can get in the way of doing what’s right and proper. So, controlling your ego for a moment…in the words of Paul and Janine…are you a spender, slender, or defender? Do you think you can do a lot better? How are you going to re-shape your attitude to serve you better?

And finally, Paul and Janine said it succinctly, ‘watch the narrative in your mind about money’. So, the question for you is: What stories do you tell yourself about money? Is it easy come, easy go? Or, I worked hard for it, and will make it work hard for me? Do you tell yourself stories that justify your spending habits? Do think you deserve a life where money is not an issue and you’re in control?

34min 45sec: Reflections and questions to test your thinking and help you put the learnings into action:
Let’s start with purpose, Sue has this presence and conviction that communicates a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. And it’s this clear belief system, which has driven the choices and actions in her life and they’ve been aligned to her life’s purpose. To get you thinking, I will lean on the Japanese concept of ikigai. Iki meaning alive, gai meaning purpose, or what gives your life purpose or meaning.

To find your life’s purpose, ask yourself: what do you love? What are you great at? What does the world need? What can you get paid for? Aligning the responses to these questions, or the heart of these responses is your ikigai, your life’s purpose.

Be sure to check out "Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life" by Hector Garcia

And secondly, resilience. Sue’s a passionate advocate for adoption and faced many heartbreaking decisions and obstacles trying to change a system that is broken and more close to home, bring a life of love and opportunity to Saroo and Mantosh. Sue’s heartfelt care for children in India who don’t have parents, who deserve the love of family. A life of love and opportunity. But she stayed true to her purpose, was staunch and passionate.

To be resilient means you need a positive self-perception, empathy, a high level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. And importantly, understand and accept that life is full of challenges. So, my question to you is…do you think you have a high level of self-awareness…got the answer, then ask someone near and dear to you, the same question…is it consistent with your perception of self?

What are your top 3 strengths and what can you do to enhance them?

Tasos Katsaounis was born and raised in Dallas Texas, where his family owned a bar and grill. Whilst helping out in the family business, Tasos spent 22 years in business consulting, until he decided to take the road less travelled.

Tasos is part of a growing breed of entrepreneurs, applying years of experience, maturity, and intuition to forge a new path and follow his passion. In Tasos' case, building the Bread Man Baking Co, into an independent commercial bakery based in Houston. Today, Bread Man Baking Co. is partnering with some of the country's top chefs, hotels and grocery retailers.

26min 46sec: Reflections and questions to test your thinking and help you put the learnings into action. There are some wonderful life lessons about backing yourself and pursuing your why, in this case for Tasos…building strong community connections through the art of baking bread.

Tasos talks with clarity and authenticity and there are three themes we explore: evolution, community connection and conviction.

Evolution: Tasos shares this in the context of his evolution as a leader. Running his own business, he now has a heightened self-awareness of his decisions and how more than ever, he is accountable for his actions…nurturing a growing business and hiring good people who depend on him and he depends on them. The question for you is, how do you hold yourself accountable for your actions? Are you an effective leader? And why?

Community connection – this is an obvious point of difference for Tasos and The Bread Man Baking Co, building community connections in an engaging, simple, and authentic way. Tasos is nurturing community brand advocates, who are super passionate and loyal. That’s powerful!
Which local business would you highly recommend because of their brand promise and product? Now let that business owner know what you think of them and share it with a friend. If you have a business, how are you building brand advocates? Do you know why your customers select you and not a competitor?

Conviction. Tasos said, “I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to do.” Tasos has a strong conviction on what he is trying to build…there was no point in our interview where he spoke about his product. Tasos has a strong growth mindset, meaning he is focused on finding solutions to the challenges that emerge when growing any business. My question to you is, “are you doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing?”

26min 15sec: Reflections and questions to test your thinking and help you put the learnings into action.
There are three themes we reflect on with this conversation with Tasos. Belief, Identity and Bravery.

  1. Belief – Tasos, with all the uncertainty of the unknown put his trust in a passion, baking bread, that defined his why. Tasos mentioned how he had a belief this would work…so much about mindset, particularly when after 22 years, you say sayonara to a way of working that is hardwired and innate. So, the question for you is, what do you enjoy doing, that doesn’t pay your bills, that enables you to find flow? Is this worth exploring?
  2. Identity – Tasos spoke about redefining his brand, losing his identity to build credibility to a new stakeholders. As a problem solver, Tasos had the insight to know this is a problem he needs to solve to succeed…the 22 years of consulting kicking into gear here. How would you define your brand? How would people define your brand, when you’re not in the room? Are there parts of your brand that you need to let go or refine to get you to the next phase of growth, for yourself or your business.
  3. And finally, brave. Tasos said it nicely, ‘nothing happens without taking a risk.’ The question for you is ‘what is the next brave and big decision that could change course of your life for the better?”

Look out for Part II with Tasos Katsaounis in Episode 2.
