Narcissistic abuse is a particular style of abuse used by manipulative and exploitative individuals, groups, systems, organizations and institutions. It is a common myth and misunderstanding that narcissistic abuse only happens at the hands of individuals who have been diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Abusers use cell phones and cars to terrorize and control their targets. They do this in order to isolate and exert coercive control making you afraid to utilize these tools or cutting you off from access them. They do this because it cuts us off from resources that may empower, connect, educate and help you fuel and nurture yourself. Many survivors of abuse have stories that involve cars, computers, cell phones and other daily technological tools and resources being used to harm and coercively control. If this has happened to you, you are not alone.

Mandy Friedman LPCC-S CCDVC CCTP gives a book review of Senior Sociopaths: How to Recognize and Escape Lifelong Abusers by Donna Andersen. Did you know abusers get worse as they age? This is not the common view among mental health professionals and criminologists. Donna defies this common, misunderstanding with her own research which has shown that (from the perspective of the targets and survivors) the abusive behaviors of sociopaths increased over time as opposed to the traditional view which is that psychopaths/sociopaths/narcissists "burn out" over time and sink into their old age with less abusive tendencies.

Narcissists will "parrot," mimic, copy and plagiarize the ideas and themes they learn from self-help or therapy sources. Since they lack the emotional intelligence and empathy required to learn from the information and change their thinking and behaviors. Instead they just "say" a lot. You may have noticed how circular conversations take place and how frustrating that can be. Often, it is within these interactions that they will throw out phrases or things they have heard as if it is something they believe and embody themselves.

Abusive and manipulative people can be sneaky, cunning and deliberate in their attempts to ruin positive aspects of our lives. They do this in order to isolate and psychologically control their targets. Many kind hearted people do not believe that malevolent intentions can exist outside of the obvious, criminal minds we see on TV and in movies. When you try to describe the saboteur's behavior, they will make you feel like it's all in your head. Narcissistic abuse is extremely difficult for people to grasp unless they have experienced it themselves. Please know this, YOU AREN'T CRAZY!
12 Forms of Narcissistic Sabotage:
Purposeful miscommunication via missing, vague information or failing to communicate. This often happens along with a story as to why they couldn't communicate.
Refusing to create or follow a plan, suddenly changing well established plans.
Purposeful misunderstanding, playing dumb or forgetful.
Sleep deprivation.
Making you late to events and appointments.
Starting fights at opportune times.
Saying they are with or are okay with something but then later behaving the opposite.
Pushing and making available drugs and alcohol.
Getting in the way of your self-care.
Stirring up issues in your other relationships.
Increasing your workload.
Triangulating with a third party or third factor to lower your confidence and sense of self.

Abusive, toxic, exploitative, narcissistic and manipulative people are really good at seeming like victims. They frame their narratives to paint themselves as the "good guy" who is being persecuted or who has had a string of bad luck. Targets of manipulators and liars tend to be highly empathic people who identify with pain and struggle. They want to help, lend an ear, cut them a break, offer support or become romantically interested. This video will illustrate the ways narcissistic and toxic people become victims of their own messes and why they choose this tactic for manipulating their targets.

Mandy Friedman LPCC-S CCDVC and Ashley Kilgore LPC explain why ALL abuse is physical abuse. Many survivors wrestle with the idea that their abuser never hit them so it must not have been "that bad." Research shows that psychological abuse has the same affect on the brain as physical abuse. Therefore, all abuse is physical abuse.

Mandy Friedman LPCC-S CCDVC and Jen Rieker CPC discuss the topic of Abuse Apologists. Abuse apologists are people to rise to the defense of abusers. Survivors of abuse are robbed of their truth by individuals, groups, churches and communities that circle wagon to protect even the most viscous and prolific of abusers. But why on earth would they do this?
This video talks about three reasons why people choose to side with abusive people.
People are seriously uneducated on these topics. The do not know that facts.
Amazingly, some people believe it's normal, it happens and survivors should just keep it to themselves.
Many abuse apologists are insecure about their position in society. They align with what they perceive to be more advantageous for themselves. This is also called power via proximity.
Last, Jen rattles off common things that abuse apologists say. We recommend that you watch the video on this channel called What is D.A.R.V.O.? next to dig deeper into this topic. Also, be on the lookout for a future video called, "Compassionate Abuse Apologists."
