Throughout society, we’re working toward actively creating space for our personal journeys within our work. And not for just pieces and parts of ourselves but for the whole individual. But to do so effectively, it takes intentionality. Intentionality of resources, intentionality of mindset, and intentionality of bringing all of the human experience into our discussions.

This is, in essence, the unspoken heart of Savage to Sage. That’s why I (Daniel Fuller), and my co-host, Kyle Maloney, want to lean into this even more. So in this episode, we outline our vision for where we’re going in 2024. Then, in upcoming episodes, we’ll be highlighting some very impactful portions of past interviews.

“We’ve heard so often the negative examples… Because it’s so difficult to honor your humanity and honor other people in this journey toward building a successful business… [So] we also want to hear stories of human flourishing in the midst of the challenges.”– Daniel Fuller

There are many non-negotiables in being an entrepreneur and some of them are wonderful but some are painful. In carrying this weight, entrepreneurs endure business wounds, whether obvious or subtle.

To dig into this reality, I (Kyle) interviewed Andrea Brummett, the CEO of reddeHR and the Founder and CEO of The Pabulum Group. Together, Andrea and I explored the topic of difficulties and loss as an entrepreneur.

As AI continues to expand and grow, it’s more and more critical that businesses not only adapt to using new tech but to leveraging it. To this end, becoming a company that creates custom solutions through innovative architecting is a wise strategy. This allows a business to remain on the cutting edge and to continue to meet the needs of clients, while others who do not adapt will, unfortunately, slowly fade.

To address this need, I (Kyle) talked with Justin Fortier, Founder, CEO and CTO of FYC Labs. As we chatted, Justin shared the need for custom solutions, cultivating culture that’s not contrived, and what innovation is and is not. Justin also discussed the trajectory to team self-sufficiency, directing your value, and anticipating healthy letdowns in business.

“You don’t need to be Elon Musk to be innovative… You can be innovative in the way that you work each day and trying to find better ways–even if it’s incremental–to improve your workflow… your output… your teamwork… your leadership… To me, that’s innovation.” -- Justin Fortier

In some way, we all seek to improve the lives of others through our businesses. We may be doing this as health services, business services, life services… it does not matter the form it takes. What does matter is being able to have some quantitative measures with which we can say we’re honoring and promoting human dignity.

To discuss the importance of the value of human dignity, I (Kyle) interviewed Greg Enas, Founder and Venture Catalyst of Innovatov LLC and Vice Chairman of CHORUS. Greg shared about the burden of properly handling and rendering decisions when it comes to gathered data. He related how data and science can be messy and you may find yourself doing a lot of crisis management but it’s worth it when you get the result of bettered lives. He went on to add how interdependency is a powerful catalyst and critical to any meaningful business.

“Interdependency is how we’re designed as human beings. We need each other. But the CEO needs to set the pace, right? They need to lead… If a CEO is not willing or able to receive, then they won’t be able to give, and that interdependency will be lost and the team will be ineffective.” -- Greg Enas

When we set out as entrepreneurs, we all need help. First of all, we need startup capital and often investors as necessary. Entrepreneurs are often led to believe that we must be very widely sought or valuable in order to make it. But there is something to be said for niching further down. Sometimes the best resilience against business failure is to become indispensable to a specific sector of people.

In this episode, I (Kyle) interviewed Curt Whitesell, the Owner of WKRP Indy Real Estate and a franchise owner of Greek Pizza, about niching for success. Curt talked about the value of indispensability and being highly specialized. He also opened up about going to zero, not selling to people, living groundhog day, and working the hardest for yourself as a nice guy. Before we wrapped up, Curt and I also discussed acknowledging your self-expectations and simplicity in business.

“I don’t think a lot of people look for opportunities. I think when you’re an entrepreneur or self-employed, you always have to be looking for other ways to lose it or make it with, and be willing to take some risk… I’m not afraid to go to zero. I’ve been there.” -- Curt Whitesell

We close doors and windows and we lock them to keep people out. Our online life, and especially our business’ online presence, should be no different. If left open, threats will find a way in, just as they would if you left a physical door unlocked. And whether those threats are in cyber security or in ways that your business is struggling, the result is the same: resilience and a plan for threat defense is needed.

Interested in exploring this deeper, I (Kyle) interviewed Jeremy Miller, CEO of Lionfish Cyber Security™. Jeremy shared how so many things are not viewed as threats because we can’t see them. He related this to the importance of resiliency and handling threats in your business, whether they be online or simply the tough reality of building a small business with limited resources, limited money and the occasional wrong employee.

“You’re going to go into this mental funk where you’re getting your butt beat every day. Nothing’s going right for a while... and you’ve got to figure out how you’re going to bounce back… It’s very much a resiliency type endeavor.” -- Jeremy Miller

Creativity deserves an outlet. Products that help humanity need to come to life. As entrepreneurs, we each see a problem, a need, and we desire to bring the solution. That solution may fit nicely into products and services which already exist, or that solution may merge together multiple existing products to create something new and more powerful.

To discuss interrupting the status quo, I (Daniel) interviewed Dr. Atif Zafar, Co-Founder and CTO of bRANE Technologies. Dr. Zafar discussed the joy and necessity of bringing humanitarian services to life, surrounding yourself with the wise, and vetting people. He also shared about how he views ‘impossible’, gets inspiration from others and holds the right mindset.

As entrepreneurs, we all are stepping into the unknown to some degree. This can be a good thing or this can be a bad thing. It really depends on what, exactly, the unknown is. Your unknown may range from uncertainty in specific areas to simply not knowing what you don’t know. So with this inherent risk, how do you determine what is worth pursuing and when you should seek more knowledge before you embark?

To dig into this further, I (Daniel) chatted with Matthew Behringer, the Managing Partner of TKSoftware Inc. Matthew related how his foray into the unknown led to many hard lessons learned. He cautioned other entrepreneurs to not forsake the wisdom of others who can offer sage advice into your venture. Matthew also discussed finding ways to pivot, balancing a partner relationship, hiring character, and implementing the right ideas.

“We didn’t know what we didn’t know… I wouldn’t recommend to anybody else to step out at the same level of unknowing... Everything we’ve learned along the way has been learned through the school of hard knocks. Which is a tough school.” -- Matthew Behringer

As leaders, we want to have core values that matter and that are being lived out. However, we don’t want to police values or try to enforce them in unnatural manners. So how do we encourage and cultivate an environment in which our core business values are evident, tangible and meaningful?

To talk about how his company has addressed this need, I (Daniel) interviewed Jake Miller, Founder and CEO of The Engineered Innovation Group. Jake and I talked at length about living and breathing core values, not just having them on a wall somewhere. He shared how he purposefully but naturally integrates adopting an abundance mindset, encouraging insatiable curiosity, and fostering true trust in relationships. Jake also opened up about admitting ego, tempering anger, and setting people up for success.

“Rather than looking at people’s flaws and what makes them not the best version, let’s look at their positive attributes–what are their strengths–and then amplify that… which is part of abundance.” -- Jake Miller

When you value people, you don’t have to do as much as you would think you need to. Success builds on itself when you mesh together people with similar ideals, who understand how to treat customers and each other, and who feel supported and, thus, support one another. This breeds success in an organization that is a natural result of just allowing people to do what they’re good at.

To discuss the power of intentionality in valuing people and more, I (Kyle) interviewed Gabe Peters, partner and COO of ScreenBroidery. Relationship maintenance and human connection are key to member retention. This is especially critical to membership or association based businesses. If people don’t stay engaged, they’ll cancel. But how do you seamlessly provide what will keep a member invested in such a fast-paced digital world? How do you focus your company to improve human connection?

To discuss digital solutions to these questions, I (Kyle) interviewed Farhad Khan, CEO and Digital Strategist of Grype Digital and their Member Lounge app. Farhad shared that the more narrow your niche, the better you can penetrate the market. He and I also discussed listening deeper, utilizing the people around you, self-sufficiency within your team, and adding small positive habits.

“The number one thing that we learned was: the narrower the niche, the better the chances of market penetration. Right? If you have too broad of a niche, it becomes difficult. The narrower the niche–you know, like the sharper the spike at the end–for you to penetrate the market.” -- Farhad Khan

There are strategy consultants who can provide big picture strategies but don't execute on the technology. Then there are developers who don't have experience with member-based organizations and couldn’t collaborate on creating a strategy for member engagement. Bringing your vision to life is mentally and physically exhausting, especially during the savage days. You have to make it happen or it probably won’t. You may even find yourself and your team needing to create solutions that currently don’t exist or don’t quite fit your needs. And in order to keep everything going, you need some wins, you need to be engaging meaningful work, and you need optimism. But in the midst of that, you need humility perhaps most of all.

To discuss this more in depth, I (Daniel) interviewed Jason Beutler, the CEO of RoboSource. Jason opened up about mental exhaustion, the fallout of arrogance, and accepting correction. He also shared about embracing the energy of fresh perspective and humble leadership modeling.

In business, we tend to view employee retention and engagement in tangible terms such as benefits, compensation, and flexible schedules. But those things are technically tied more to employee satisfaction. Genuine and meaningful employee engagement is much deeper than that. And if we wish to retain excellent employees, and achieve results we must understand it.

In this episode, I (Kyle) and Adam K. Binkerd, a Founding Partner and the CEO of 240Solutions, explored this topic. Adam explained the three pieces of employee engagement which bring understanding of the human experience: belonging, vulnerability, and shared purpose. Adam further expounded by discussing producing quality results through quality human experience, the value of trouble-makers, walking leaders into leading differently, and the gift of peace.

“Employee engagement is… an innate piece of who we are… Our engagement comes from the acknowledgement of our humanity. And that comes in the sense of belonging, vulnerability, and shared purpose. These are true about all of us.”-- Adam K. Binkerd

What You’ll Learn* Belonging, vulnerability and shared purpose * Inviting perspectives and being heard * Quality results through quality experience * The value of trouble-makers * Walking leaders into leading differently * What are you afraid of? * The gift of peace

Adam in his own words…“My story is simple but it wasn’t easy. Anything worth pursuing is usually a challenge. I like to say ‘When it starts to suck, Congratulations…you just started learning.’

“So here it is…

“As a teen, I survived sexual assault, navigated a learning disability [dyslexia], battled addiction, and finished high school genuinely believing I was stupid. I worked 10 professional years as a landscaper from the most impoverished county in Indiana before pursuing my college education.

“After 15 years, I left the landscaping profession to pursue a career helping struggling students (like me) discover their brilliance and self-belief.

“8 years later, using a human-centered strategy, I became a nationally recognized expert in student success and retention by focusing solely on EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT.

“In 2021, I stepped out and started a business helping others learn how to recognize, elevate, and act on the inherent value of their people.

“After 4 college degrees, including two Masters degrees in Leadership, I have discovered that ALL leadership success is predicated on two traits, (1) a relentless belief in others and (2) courageous curiosity. As an organizational leader, the answers you need lie within your organization, within your people. My proven approach can help you mine both the answers and the hidden gems in your company.

“There is no secret to my success...it’s people-first, nothing less and no exceptions.”

As savage-minded entrepreneurs, we have to think beyond the norm and push boundaries. Nothing new happens unless we do. This may take the form of pursuing methods or ideas others have dismissed or perhaps not even considered. It may take the form of ignoring those who say it won’t work. For an entrepreneur, rejecting the expected is integral to life and goals.

Eager to discuss this further, I (Kyle) interviewed Matt Speer, the Founder of LIV Indy, and the Founder and CEO of Property Management Advisory (LivLabs.io). Matt shared how he’s used not-so-ordinary ideas to accomplish goals throughout his life, and now is improving the technology that is sorely lacking in the world of real estate and property management. Matt related stories of avoiding working in the campus bookstore, the chip on the shoulder mindset, values to determine passion, and having hard conversations.

“But when it's your own vision–you know, when it’s just an idea and it becomes a reality–and then you’re selling that product... That’s what gets me up in the morning and gives me a lot of excitement… I just follow it, chase it as much as I can.”-- Matt Speer

A leader is someone who raises their hand. Someone who, despite adversity, says “Yes” to opportunity, to tackling hard things, to adapting and overcoming, to seeing solutions and implementing them. True leaders lead because it is simply part of who they are. They do when others say they can't. They prove naysayers wrong.

To discuss raising your hand, I (Kyle) talked with Inez Evans, the President and CEO of IndyGo. Inez related thriving and leading regardless of difficulties, the necessity of integrity, focusing on solutions rather than problems, managing from the floor, and much more. She also shared some of her personal experiences that shaped her commitment, her focus, and how she learned to persevere even more by working together.

“Don’t take no for an answer… If I allowed people to tell me ‘No, you can't’, I would not be here today.”-- Inez Evans

Inez has ushered in IndyGo’s first all-electric bus rapid transit line, recruited emerging leaders to the executive team, maintained and innovated service during a pandemic, developed and executed the purchase of a new headquarter location to meet the growing needs of the agency, put new vehicles into service (moving IndyGo towards its clean fleet goals), enforced vendor accountability, enhanced improvements with paratransit services, and championed diversity and workforce development within the agency.

With more than 25 years of experience, Inez’s career has been rooted in her ability to build and nurture relationships, bring communities together, and affect organizational change. Before joining IndyGo, she began her career in customer service and most recently was the Chief Operating Officer for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).

Inez serves on the Indianapolis Arts Council board of directors and on their diversity and inclusion committee, as well as being appointed by Mayor Hogsett to the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee board of directors in 2019. As we build our businesses, finding people who both fit into our business but also enhance our business is crucial. We need different viewpoints, different strengths and different talents. In our search, we may come across people who are wonderfully like-minded with us or we may encounter people who don’t have our best interest in mind. Regardless, success isn’t about being perfect or having everything perfect, it is about being professional, adapting, and continuing to move forward.

To talk about these truths, I (Kyle) interviewed Kirk Booher, the Founder, President and Senior Security Officer of OnGuard Security Solutions. Kirk shared what it means to be professional but not perfect, the value of working with boundaries in mind, people you may encounter in business, the sum of the room, and much more. He also opened up about some of the rough times he’s been through and what he’s learned from each of them.

“Professional doesn’t mean perfect. Perfect is the enemy of good. If I waited for everything to be perfect, I would get very little, if anything, done. But we need to be professional, right? And all that word holds.”-- Kirk Booher

Success brings with it pressures you might not be ready for. In an attempt to alleviate imposter syndrome and to do and learn all the things, your personal life suffers. This then spills over into your leadership, causing issues at work… which then only add to the difficulties at home… and the horrible cycle continues.

To discuss this problem we all face, I (Kyle) interviewed my unofficial mentor, Cory Carlson, Owner and the CEO of Connector Consulting, the author of Win at Home First and Rise and Go, and the podcast host of Win at Home First. Cory opens up about his journey from trying to help himself to seeking a coach, and how that led him to the place he is today. Through his own personal transformation, Cory saw how being absent from home life and existing without purpose in your work doesn’t have to be “just the way it is”. He talks about intentionality, courage with grace, timing, rejecting head trash, and much more.

“You need to put together a vision statement. Just a simple, 10 word or less, pithy vision statement… puts a little fear in you and also excites you.”-- Cory Carlson

Twenty years in corporate America gave Cory amazing opportunities as he worked his way up to the executive level. But he also saw brokenness: work without purpose, burnout, lack of focus, strained marriages, and absentee parents. Business leaders, especially, were often not living life to the fullest.

When Cory discovered coaching, it helped him become a better leader, husband, and father. So he left his corporate career to help other leaders win at work and at home. Cory does this through executive coaching, speaking, and writing.

Keeping up with changes in technology and suggestions from others can force your business into a place you don’t want to be. When that happens, what do you do? How do you adapt a business during lightning speed changes? How do you evolve a business you don’t want into one you do?

For any organization to be truly purpose-driven, it needs to become a movement, not just a move. In other words, it cannot simply be a mission statement we put on the office wall or include in emails. It must have deeper roots than that.

For this episode, I (Kyle) chat with John Qualls, the CEO and President of Purpose HQ about putting purpose back into work. As we talk, we discuss one of the biggest issues in building our businesses: finding people who are as purpose-driven as our business. John also shares about understanding your superpower, evaluating what's next, moving from checkers to chess, and surrounding yourself with challengers.

“It’s not about you against them. It’s about us against the problem… That means you’ve got to build a team who can bring all these different perceptions around that problem so that you can get to a better solution.”-- John Qualls

Choosing to be a part of the solution rather than playing the blame game takes a lot of courage. As an entrepreneur, you have to be willing to take on the challenges of being a public persona and finding a way to work within an ever-changing cash flow. You also have to continually strive toward maintaining a proper balance between work and life.

To discuss choosing courage and balance in entrepreneurship, I (Daniel) chatted with Sunny Lu, the President and CEO of Techserv.io. Sunny shares some of her family experiences, the calling of entrepreneurship, the bravery of stepping into the unknown, and understanding the bar you set as a leader. She also relates how important the health and life balance of employees is to a thriving business. Sunny offers a lot of personal transparency as she discusses her own journey of discovery regarding balance.

“A lot of this company, a lot of myself, has been very much a humbling experience of watching what others have done, being able to, in hindsight, say, ‘Yes, I would want to do this differently’... and then applying that not only to myself but to my team and how we as a company do business.”-- Sunny Lu Williams

Passion. Purpose. Belief. These are the internal drivers that push the entrepreneur to build something they believe in. That compelling inspiration of recognizing a problem you know you can solve, setting out to do just that, and pushing through limitations – long before the dollars prove you right.

In this podcast episode, I (Kyle) discuss the staying power of belief with Anton Shmakov. Formerly with Google and LinkedIn, Anton is now the CEO of MOTIONRAY INC. (MR•NET®). As we chat, Anton relates the personal reality of leaving one of the best paying jobs out there to help bring to life a company he believes in. He goes on to share the value of pushing forward, beyond what you think possible, fueled by the knowledge of the value you’re creating for the world.

To power through business issues takes two. Whether it’s the two customer bookends (the initial sale and delivering on promises) or the two-some of you and a co-founder, balance is power. By navigating relationships and using each other’s strengths, you can sustain the passion to build a business.

In this episode, I (Daniel) discuss balance in both leadership and your team with Jim Goldman, the Co-Founder and CEO of Trava. Jim shares how working well together, having at least one person who loves sales, and passing along knowledge sustains passion. He goes on to offer the perspective of hiring people who already possess proper balance and capabilities, and then training for skills.

“Laughter makes us more productive… [So] we take our laughter very seriously.”-- Jim Goldman

What You’ll Learn* Sustaining passion * Partner balance * One needs to love sales * Relinquishing control * Hire for capabilities, train for skills * Savage with a sage mindset * Charging intensity

Recommended ResourcesConnect with Jim GoldmanJim is the Co-Founder and CEO of Trava, a cybersecurity risk management company. Along with having worked for the FBI and Salesforce, Jim says about himself…

“I am proud of my ability to solve big hairy problems (BHPs). I believe in doing things right or not at all. My to-do lists are legendary. I am a strategist, connecting dots that others don’t see, but also an achiever, focused on delivering meaningful results.

At Salesforce, I built the company's first Security GRC organization where I am responsible for enterprise-wide Security Governance, Risk Management, Compliance. I was initially also responsible for Information Management/Data Governance including GDPR, which has since transferred to the Chief Data Officer's organization.

I am a diversity champion. My current team (~80 people globally) is 41% women and my leadership team is 42.8% women.

I build efficient programs and effective organizations. I fix broken processes. I solve problems rather than treat symptoms. I believe in the speed of trust.

I have started degree programs at major universities, research labs serving the FBI, and trust organizations for cloud computing companies. I am an internationally published author and am a frequently invited conference speaker and panelist.

The values that I live by and profess to my teams are loyalty, honesty, and humor (mostly at my own expense). I was practicing servant leadership before it had a name.”

All successful businesses take hard work and devotion, and they seek to meet a need. But building a business that strengthens your roots has a special layer of significance and attachment, it feeds the lifeblood of your soul.

In this episode, I (Daniel) talk with John Dockery, Founder and CEO of What’s Up 24/7 about building a business based on your roots. John shares his passion both for his local rural community, its people and its history, as well as communities across the nation like his, and larger. We discuss the impact this passion has on dreaming up, and then building, a thriving business. John stresses affordability, forging new territory, designing usable tools, and supporting one another.

“I believe our rural communities are worth saving…That matters to me.”-- John Dockery

Then, In 2011, he envisioned a dynamic, customizable, ever-expanding solution, one which, with the help of his business partner and team, became what is now Whatsup247.com.

What's Up 24/7 was originally designed with Rural America in mind, but their network crosses the divide into metropolis, and unites entire regions by offering a true, 360 degree view of what everyone has to offer – because together we are stronger.

Focusing on outputs and productivity, in and of themselves is insufficient. For the growth of a business to be maintained long term, the humanity aspect cannot be overlooked or downplayed. Understanding how people can work together, utilizing each other’s strengths, shoring up each other’s weaknesses, is necessary for both the business and its people to thrive.

To discuss the humanity of long game business, I have with me (Kyle) for this podcast episode Mark Abbott, Visionary/Founder and CEO of Ninety.io. Mark shares how necessary it is to recognize the humanity of others and the importance of playing the right game, not just the lowest cost provider game. This works hand in hand with knowing yourself, having a coach to help you see things more clearly, and then structuring your business appropriately.

“In order to have long term-oriented success, you need to create an environment where people can play the long game, and enjoy playing the long game… So the humanity is creating an environment where 1+1+1 = 5.”-- Mark Abbott

Mark’s track record includes generating over $1 billion in gains for his colleagues and investors.

Without the right people surrounding you, the already demanding and difficult aspects of business only become more so. That's why developing and maintaining good interpersonal relationships within business is much more critical than it may appear on the surface. The concept that nothing within business is personal is simply not true. Some things are and thus need to be approached accordingly.

I (Kyle) dive into these underlying support things with Matt Tinney, the Founder and Owner of Windows Management Experts. Matt relates how important it is to have hard conversations, to not overlook indicators of people’s true nature or intentions, and to exercise compassion alongside accountability. He stresses the value of attracting those who are aligned with your own philosophies, goals and mission. Having these people, Matt shares, is what will build a solid foundation in your business, allowing for the inevitable shift of your own role and the growth of your business.

“Surround yourself with people that are going to support you, empower you and have your best interest, with nothing in it for them… [That] is extremely important. You’ve got to have that support.”-- Matt Tinney

Enabling your team to carry out the vision of your company is paramount. You simply can’t do everything yourself. But how do you effectively share the processes that execute the vision? For that matter, how do you find the right people to join you in your vision in the first place?

As we chatted about all this, Chad shared how they find the right people, dedicated people, for their teams. He goes on to emphasize the value in working smarter by naming processes. This allows your team to easily pinpoint the instructions – and the why behind them – so they know what to do and can carry out the vision.

“Setting the standard, making sure that it’s met, and really leading by example… that’s where the sage stuff has to come in... That's about distributing that information, that knowledge, that understanding down to the tem, enabling them as much as possible.”-- Chad Rose

Entrepreneurs are often sold the myth that, in order to be successful, you have to have it all together, to not need any help. We’re encouraged to hide our flaws and our questions. But this myth simply isn’t true. It’s in our nature as humans to both need help ourselves and to want to help others. And it's when you embrace this truth you can move your business forward in ways you may have thought impossible.

Dan Stewart, Founder and CEO (that is, Chief Enchantment Officer) of Happy Grasshopper is a perfect example of someone who has lived both giving and receiving help. Dan's transparency regarding the human side of being an entrepreneur is both refreshing and encouraging. In this episode, Dan shares about his youth, and the value of role rejection to help people get what they want. We go on to discuss the importance of forging relationships, the evidence of core values, and how to be properly savage with ourselves.

“I truly believe if we ask for help, we’re going to get it… It’s in our human nature to help one another. I’ve certainly been helped by countless people.”-- Dan Stewart

Entrepreneurs have a spark, a drive that propels them to move forward, to make whatever they envision a reality. Throughout that drive, especially during the savage days, confidence is crucial. Without it, your business will never grow, especially in the area of bringing on the right team members. And without the right team members and instilling proper confidence in them, you'll never obtain that entrepreneurial freedom you desire.

In this episode, I (Kyle) talk with Preston Cone, the Founder of Approved Social, and the CEO of both Cone Creatives (Cone Agency) and Donor Curve, about this integral part of caring for yourself and your business. Preston shares how choosing the right team members isn’t all about experience or skill level. He goes on to discuss the personal side of turning over processes to your team, setting boundaries, and the value in saying no.

“If you can really develop that skill of saying no to a certain task that you think you need to get done… it usually gets done even better… ‘Instead of me going and doing this task, my team should be doing this task. Who is the person in my team that I need to coach on this?’”-- Preston Cone

Love of serving can be the drive you need to create momentum in the savage days. But timing and needs play a huge role as well. You may have a wonderful idea but if the market is not ready for it, it won’t matter. Along with that, you personally need to be ready. The good news is, there are currently nearly limitless needs and niches. Much of what existed even 10 years ago has changed, while many things have hardly changed at all. What you have to offer, and your strengths, may be precisely what’s necessary to fill a need.

To talk about timing, needs and love of serving, I (Daniel) invited Todd Howard, President/CEO of HALO Senior Solutions. Todd and I talk about how successful leaders must recognize and seek to fill their areas of weakness. After all, no one is good at everything. Todd also shares a lot about his interview process to find the perfect people, the concept of the 90 day audition, and about restoring and maintaining joy in work.

“It’s refreshing to get to hear them expound on what it means to them or to see them light up a little… You can see if it brings joy to them.”-- Todd Howard

Most people are resistant to change. We simply don’t like it. We want things to be how they’ve been and disruptions and difficulties are viewed as setbacks. But what if change and pivoting are opportunities in disguise? What if they are the very catalyst needed to prompt your next great thing?

To talk about his experiences with change I (Daniel) invited Jeff Boller, owner of Vision One Real Estate and one of the founders of Reeliti.com. Jeff shares about surviving the real estate bubble of 2008 and current changes on the horizon. We discuss being time driven, not getting mired in details, and focusing on the proper things for ROI. Jeff also shares some sage wisdom regarding pivoting, reframing opportunities, and priming for change.

“Change can be a great thing. You just have to set your mind differently. You have to look at it as an opportunity and not as a disruption.”-- Jeff Boller

What You’ll Learn* Being time driven * Proper focus for ROI * Reframing opportunities * Processing change * Choosing your mindset * Demonstrating tenacity

After several years in the corporate world, and a move to Indiana from Chicago, he decided to make his interest in real estate a new career. Growing up with a Mom who had her own Brokerage in MD and buying his first house in Greenville, SC at age 25 were the catalyst behind this decision. He started with Coldwell Banker and then branched out on his own establishing Vision One Real Estate in 2016! Since then he has made Personal Investments in Fix-n-Flips, Long Term Rentals and Shorter Term BNB's.

Currently, Jeff is working on building his new venture, Reeliti.com, a technology-driven approach to real estate investing. Reeliti is designed to help the average real estate investor buy other good assets that appreciate and create cash-flow.

Along with his businesses, Jeff and his wife Paula are heavily involved in their church, Northview Christian Church, and Jeff is the Founder of the USC Indy Alumni Chapter (Go Gamecocks!). No matter the stage of your business, having someone who has the knowledge, wisdom and experience to advise you can save an untold amount of time and grief. They have walked through both success and failure, failure often being the greater teacher of the two.

To discuss the value of sage mentorship and admitting failure, I (Daniel) have with me Doug Edge, COO of Reproduction Specialty Group and owner of Edge Marketing, Inc. Doug shares rebounding from bubble bursts, learning from failure, and choosing true partners. He also addresses the importance of not hiding your blind spots and giving people the freedom to push back against you.

But when you take things on with a savage mindset – that you can make success happen – you do. And age has nothing to do with it. You may be young or older, but if you’re ready to learn, make genuine relationships, and keep them, you will make it.

For more about all this, I chatted with Kurtis Arbuckle, Co-Founder, President and COO of Arbuckle Robotics. He shared juggling multiple hats, knowing when to hand things off, establishing credibility, and more. In particular, Kurtis emphasized the nuances of building great relationships and how to identify the right people to join your team.

“Once you’ve established credibility, people don’t care how much you know, they want to know how much you care.”-- Kurtis Arbuckle

When what’s burning inside of you to do is undeniable, it’s time to start making your own business a reality. Continuing to put it off only creates misery and denies the world of what you have to offer. Timing is all about when it’s right for you. That said, even when it is right, that doesn’t mean it won’t have challenges.

In this therapeutic episode, I (Daniel) talk with Justin Fortier, Founder, CEO and CTO of FYC Labs, about that urge, that visceral drive to do something of your very own. Justin shares about game recognizing game, not forcing company culture, handling stress, and enduring pain. We also discuss checking your motives and when you can't keep it down.

“You’re emotionally cheating on your current employer by having this visceral urge to go out and do something more… If that's the case, then hit the gas pedal, don’t worry too much about timing… Start your business when it’s right for you, when it’s something you need to do.”-- Justin Fortier

Recently, I had a near death experience and I was extremely grateful to not be alone. We’re not meant to do most things alone, even as entrepreneurs. In spite of this truth, for many years we’ve had a culture of believing, and thus doing, everything alone. But this is beginning to shift. And I'm here with this podcast to encourage you in that shift, and to announce that I’m no longer the sole host of the Savage to Sage podcast!

I’m very excited to introduce my new co-host, Kyle Maloney, a Senior Account Executive at FullStack PEO. As someone with a strong cross-cultural background and experience, Kyle brings a different perspective. I’m looking forward to him asking questions of our guests in a way that varies from mine, resulting in even richer content. Together, we are thrilled to bring you more encouragement, enlightenment and togetherness, as we all journey from savage to sage.

“[My experience was] a reminder of how important it is to lean into your own weaknesses… but then lean into your own strengths. And to notice and call forth the strengths of other people. That's key for success in life and business. Again, we’re not meant to do it alone.” -- Daniel Fuller

Whether you’re starting something completely new or rebuilding something that needs restructuring, it’s not perfect all the time. But that's okay. As savages, we tackle problems and look internally for courage and grit. We push through the hard and ugly, potentially even eating some humble pie, and we make it work.

In this episode, I talk with Darren Reese, President and CEO of SESCO Group, about this reality. He shares how it’s not always going to be smooth. The path won’t be completely straight or clear. But the growth and results are completely worth it. And as he’s journeyed toward sage, Darren has found success through deeper self-awareness, allowing situations to breathe, and inspecting, not expecting.

“No matter how dire you feel like it will be at that moment, it’s gonna be okay. You’re going to find a path. That's what got you where you are. Have a little more self-confidence. Have a little bit more peace.”-- Darren Reese

You never really drop being a savage in business but as you move toward sage, you learn to recognize when your business is a good fit and when it’s not. You learn when to say yes and when to say no. You begin to lead with wisdom and lean into the uncomfortable, and it moves you into an authenticity people gravitate towards. And this beautiful balance of savage and sage can grow a business exponentially.

For our first episode of Season 3 of Savage to Sage, I discuss all this with Kelly Siegel, CEO of National Technology Management. Kelly relates how his personal transformation led to massive business transformation. He found himself amazed at how much better and more present he was when he let go of the victim mentality... and how vastly that impacted his business in positive ways. His business increased by 30% and his family – and work family – relationships improved. Kelly’s experience and his willingness to openly share inspired me and I believe it will inspire you as well.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN* Embracing events of change * Not numbing the present * Releasing blockages * Leading from the inside out * Mark of a good leader * Genuinely loving yourself * Pouring from a full cup * Breaking down coping mechanisms

CONNECT WITH KELLY SIEGELKelly Siegel is the friendly but fierce CEO of National Technology Management. With an educational background in criminal justice and sociology, he’s always enjoyed studying what makes people tick. He’s known for his ability to see everyone’s point of view and deliver results. Kelly’s been a mover and a shaker ever since his first paper route when he was 12 years old. It was clear from a young age that he was destined to run his own company. He’s truly great at solving puzzles. The first things you’ll notice about Kelly is his big personality and relentless pursuit of excellence. But once you get to know him, you’ll be taken with his kind, happy and generous demeanor. In Kelly’s book, family comes first. One of his favorite things to do is to have meals with his family. He also has a cat named Felix, who also enjoys mealtimes, and a small yorkie named Sammy, who forgives Felix for his bossy ways. When he’s not working or with his family, you’ll find him working out, reading or listening to a podcast. He’s a huge fan of personal development and really good comedy. His mission in life is to always strive to learn more and to get better. Since the pandemic, the business and employment landscape has created unprecedented opportunities in the evolution of self for entrepreneurs. As people are more accustomed to working remotely for and with businesses, fertile ground abounds for entrepreneurs to start their own business, no matter where they live. In doing so, entrepreneurs find themselves learning and evolving with the times to accomplish all the components necessary to business success. In this episode, I discuss this evolution of self in launching and growing a business with the CEO and Co-Founder of https://www.makemymove.com/ (MakeMyMove), Mike Rutz. Mike shares some wise insights into personal growth that results in business growth. We discuss how things won’t always be tidy, hiring and firing well, setting expectations and giving people leeway to make things happen, and much more. I found Mike’s advice on working internally first in order to work externally, and the importance of frequent uncomfortable conversations, to be deeply sage advice.  “If you’re not having uncomfortable conversations, you’re not moving the needle. Your job is to come in and be willing to have those uncomfortable conversations, and manage those in a way that’s productive for yourself and for the individual who you’re having that conversation with. You have to be able to have uncomfortable conversations when you’re leading a team. Otherwise, you just can’t address the areas that need improvement.” -- Mike Rutz What You’ll LearnBe okay with less than perfect Make things repeatable Hire well, fire well Uncomfortable conversations should be happening Be scrappy, willing to make mistakes, willing to tackle things you don’t expect Deeply process feedback, then zero in

Over the past couple of years, recruiting and hiring has drastically changed. As business leaders, if we want to potentially have great people work for us in the future, we need to adjust how we interview and identify the best fit for our organizations. In this episode, I talk with Amy Oviedo, the founder and CEO of https://www.recruitingexperiences.com/ (Recruiting Experiences), about all this. We discuss the power of taking a sabbatical to recharge or redirect, the importance of mutual agreement between employers and employees, hiring the scrappy person, and much more. I got a lot out of this interview, especially when we discussed the importance of letting people try, even if they aren’t completely ready. I hope you find this interview valuable as well.  “You have to, as a leader, be willing to let people… fall on their face now and again. And then, picking them up when you need to, dusting them off, talking about the lessons, and moving on to the next one. That is not easy to do when something’s your baby… [But] it’s never going to go perfectly anyway and whether it’s me overextending myself and messing something up or me letting somebody who’s maybe not quite ready jump in, we’re still going to get the work done. And we’re going to be fine, we’re going to learn from it and we’re going to move on to the next thing.” -- Amy Oviedo What You’ll LearnFinding your next thing The power of taking a sabbatical Mutual agreement between employer and employee Learning in the early savage days Intentionally honoring self-care and family Unlearning the old ways Recruiting the scrappy Being a multiplying presence Ask for help

Some entrepreneurs never really set out to lead a team. They find themselves backing into leading. Others set out with the goal of building a team. Regardless of the catalyst, the best entrepreneurs are not passionate about the technicality of their solution, but rather about the problem they are trying to solve in the world. Without both passion for the solution and for people and their growth, any leader is not going to be as effective as they desire to be. In this episode, I talk with Chip Neidigh, founder and CEO of https://kairosconsulting.com/ (Kairos) all about the joy and passion of leading. Through Chip’s work coaching CEOs, he has observed and learned much from others and much about himself. Our discussion wove through how success is what sells, what it’s like to let others take the lead, embracing peace, learning through self-observation, and more. I hope the wisdom shared in this interview elevates your perspective as much as it did mine. “When you are most vulnerable, you are most influential.” -- Chip Neidigh What You’ll LearnSavagery as a solopreneur Nothing sells as success Building momentum Specificity of hiring for your business Observing yourself Investing in yourself Grounding habits Passion in leading

A root of many frustrations in building a business lies in understanding people. It is common to fail to see people for who they truly are and, instead, see them for who you hope them to be. This misunderstanding of people results in poor hiring choices, confusing expectations with expectancy, and muddling morale with company culture. Startups and entrepreneurs often are unaware of their tendency to make assumptions about people but are left with the ongoing trouble this causes.  The good news is that the skill to understand people can be learned. In this episode, I discuss all this with John McDonald, a managing entrepreneur at https://nextstudios.org/ (Next Studios). We talk about properly assessing people, your true only job as a founder, the difference between morale and culture, and much more.  “People are who they are going to be. And you can’t see people for what you wish they were… the job of a leader is to try and get underneath the covers and understand where people are coming from so that you can be able to anticipate how they might behave in a given situation.” -- John McDonaldWhat You’ll LearnExpectations and calculated risk Properly assessing who people are Expectations vs expectancy Your true job as a startup founder What company culture truly is A sustainable definition of success

Building a company to the point of acquisition, especially acquisition by a large corporation, takes a high level of savagery. In particular, core values and company culture need intentionality. Following that time of savage building comes a time of sage reflection, both about how things worked throughout the years, and how all of it shaped and impacted you, individually.  In today’s episode, I talk with Angie Stocklin about all this. Angie is currently a Lecturer of Entrepreneurship at Purdue University, as well as an Angel Investor and a Mentor. Prior to that, she co-founded and built the company, One Click Internet Ventures, to the point of acquisition by Foster Grant, International. We discuss the years when she and her co-founder were scaling the business, including leadership decisions, finding the right team members, instilling core company values, and more.   “[Company culture] was all very intentional because, at first, it was completely unintentional. And we were naive enough to think that if we just set a good enough example, and we hired people that seemed to have the same values as us… the culture would just happen, and it would just naturally evolve… and that is not what happened.” -- Angie Stocklin What You’ll LearnMoving into the next phase after an acquisition Growing a business to acquisition Proper and improper priorities Embracing leadership roles Kind but corrective feedback Knowing yourself and finding others that know themselves Transitioning to trusting others Intentional company culture Monitoring the health of core company values Ideas for regularly celebrating and reinforcing values Making values actionable Addressing when people fall short  Key growth and evolution What makes you feel valued? Hitting singles and doubles, rather than grand slams, is often the way a business builds. And incremental growth happens as you remain humble. Sometimes you’ll strike out but when you try various sales efforts, are open to feedback, and simply do the next faithful step, you’ll eventually score. In this episode, I chat with Patrick Burke, co-founder and CEO of https://www.boxscoreme.com/ (BoxScore), all about this. We discuss success through humility, how it’s not always about hitting a home run, and creating space for new ideas. I hope you enjoy all the baseball metaphors as much as we did! “I think it is really easy to overcomplicate things… especially when things get hard. You want to do this brand new huge thing. It’s like, ‘Just, man, keep it simple’... What’s the next faithful step? That’s all you can control a lot of the times, right? What’s the next thing that I can do that makes sense?’ And you just go day after day doing that, and it’s amazing how far you’ll go.” -- Patrick Burke What You’ll LearnEntrepreneurship with family A deeper understanding of humility Rejuvenating and recharging Fresh eyes in the team and business culture Your strong why as fuel Invest in relationships

As our lives and businesses change, so often our approach does as well. Savage to Sage was started to explore the topics of self-care, self-awareness and multiplication as business owners. In this episode, I chat with https://www.michaeldkelly.com/ (Mike Kelly) about what it means to remain savage while going through sage evolution both as business owners and individuals. For the first half of this podcast, I interview Mike and then he flips the script and interviews me in the second half. You’ll learn what compelled Mike onto a path he could not have foreseen, why I took a break from the podcast and am now returning, and more. I hope you gain some savage direction and sage wisdom from this episode as Savage to Sage resumes!  “If I look back and would say what was the hallmark of what got me started on that path, it was just the ability to work hard. To do the job that nobody else wants to do. Have no ego in it. Do it to the best of your ability and you will be recognized for that. And that will attract a certain class of people to you who also want to work hard; who also tend to be less ego-focused and are willing to do whatever it takes to win, to get the job done.” -- Mike Kelly  What You’ll LearnSelf-care and self-awareness From a broken back to multiple ventures Self-multiplication Evolution of amplifying effectiveness Asking questions rather than giving answers Evolution and Savage to Sage Why the 3 Pillars Defining and practicing self-care Defining and acting on self-awareness Defining and executing self-multiplication  Why work-life balance is a fallacy Can compartmentalization be learned?

Aaron Kopel is the founder and CEO at Project Brilliant, an agile training, coaching, and consulting company, working to help large organizations become more agile and be able to function more like a startup. Project Brilliant is Aaron’s third startup, and as such, he has learned a lot about his personal strengths and how to apply them within the role of CEO. In my conversation with Aaron, we talked about what it takes to start a new project, how he grew from solo consultancy to a business, and the responsibilities of running a team.  Find the problem. Define it clearly. And then go find someone who has that problem and go talk to them. That’s a good first step so you don’t go down a path of building a lot of stuff and spending a lot of time and energy on something that doesn’t matter. No matter how cool you think it is, you have to find a customer with that problem. -Aaron KopelTo connect with Aaron, find him on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaronkopel (https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaronkopel), or for more information on Project Brilliant, email Aaron at aaron@projectbrilliant.com, or go to their website, https://projectbrilliant.com/ (https://projectbrilliant.com/) Topics In This EpisodeWhat made Aaron jump into the world of entrepreneurship The jobs within the title of a CEO Delegating within a small startup to take advantage of team members skills and passions  Using StrengthsFinder to learn about internal strengths and weaknesses, and using that information for team building Pushing back when you don’t agree with a client Creating the time for internal growth, as a company

Greg Kraios is an example of a startup founder who completed the start up journey, and is starting at it again. Greg was the CEO and founder of 250ok, an email intelligence platform to help email marketers understand what was happening to the mail they were sending. Through the early days of being a founder, he had a clear understanding of where his strengths were, and surrounded himself with insightful people to fill the other roles around him in order to build a strong company, greatly positioned for acquisition. I’ve been surrounded by entrepreneurs most of my life. I’ve had a couple of family members that were successful entrepreneurs, friends, parents that were entrepreneurs. And it was just something that I was always drawn to... I always just felt that being an entrepreneur might give me a little more control over my destiny. -Greg Kraios In our conversation, he talks about how he watched a friend build Exact Target, what he learned from his time there, and maintaining relationships that he was able to go back to and ask for advice when he started 250ok. Tiffany Sauder is the CEO of Element Three and a mother to four daughters. Tiffany shares that her background in business and finance was unusual in the marketing space, but that is what set her and her firm apart from other agencies. She details the early savage days and how she really dove headfirst into learning the marketing space so she could determine the differentiating factor, and really maximize that difference.  “I started to see that the fact that I had a business background was really unique. Most business owners had come from the art side or they were writer, or they had been journalists. They came really from the industry background and had to learn the business. I came at this totally different and that I understand business and what we’re trying to help people do is win in their business. We’re not just trying to create work that wins awards... I started to see the thing that we could compete on is our business acumen and the way that we took this thing of marketing that is wildly misunderstood by almost everybody who buys marketing.” -Tiffany SauderTiffany has great insight on what it looks like to be a leader of a team, and the importance of humility and transparency, both as a leader and in relationships with clients. We talk about how this has shaped her personal journey and that of Element Three, as well as how those traits have played a role in moving her team through the covid pandemic. Terry Dove-Pittman never set out to be an entrepreneur. Fifteen years ago, if you had asked about her life plan, it would have been to spend time with her family, work a steady career in government, and follow that plan. She is currently the Chief Strategy Officer at the Gideon Group, her third entrepreneurial endeavor, where she leverages her many years of expertise to help grow startups and nonprofits.  “As many times as I asked, ‘Why me?’ But then, ‘Why not me?’ I am uniquely qualified in being Terry, and the skills and things that I have gleaned over time are vital to other people.” -Terry Dove-Pittman  In our conversation, she shares that one of the most important areas of growth along her journey from savage to sage has been in boundary-setting, and that it has had a big positive impact on her both personally and professionally.
