It’s our annual Hawaiʻi football prediction show, which means Wayne and Sean go game-by-game through the season and officially put their guesses on record.

We talk Timmy Chang’s extension, Micah Alejado’s importance to the offense, the questions around the offensive line, and whether UH can build real momentum after last year’s Hawaii Bowl high.

We also break down the schedule, from Stanford and UNLV to North Dakota State, Nevada, UTEP, and the road games that always seem to come with some kind of UH football trauma.

Is this the worst conference UH has been in since they went D1?

No spoilers here — but we make our picks, debate the toss-ups & the traps, and ask whether this is finally the season Hawaiʻi turns optimism into something real.

View Details

This week, we follow up on last episode’s conversation about the increasingly religious tone around the UH football program and what that means for the team’s identity.

Then we shift to North Dakota State, a program that didn’t move up to the FBS just to be another average mid-major — not after winning 10 FCS national championships since 2011.

That leads us back to the bigger question: what is the actual goal of being a mid-major in today’s college football world? With NIL money harder to raise at our level, and Power 5 benchwarmers getting paid while mid-majors fight for scraps, the gap feels wider than ever.

And with no Group of Six schools in the preseason AP Top 25, it feels like another sign of the times.

The Boys dig into the Mountain West settlement and why UH’s payout appears to be a lot lighter than fans originally expected. (Which is what we said would happen.)

Instead of a major financial win, Hawaiʻi may be looking at less than half of the rumored number — another reminder that UH can’t afford to just sit back and hope the conference money saves them.

We also hit Mountain West Media Days, the Stanford opener, Micah Alejado’s preseason hype, and Timmy Chang finally getting his extension.

But the bigger question is still hanging over the whole episode: is UH using its limited money in the smartest way possible? Football gets the headlines, but in this new NIL world, maybe the championship path runs through Wahine Volleyball, men’s volleyball, baseball, or the sports where Hawaiʻi can actually become a national problem again.

Mountain West Media Days are here, but this year comes with a twist: no preseason poll, even as Hawaiʻi quarterback Micah Alejado was named the conference’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. We talk about Alejado’s rise, Timmy Chang’s long-awaited extension, and what the new season could mean for UH football.

Then we ask the uncomfortable question: what if Hawaiʻi took $1 million from football and gave it to Wahine Volleyball? UH may never reach the new $5 million revenue-sharing cap for mid-majors, and even if it did, football still feels far away from national-title contention — but with more investment, Wahine Volleyball could realistically chase championships every year like it used to.

We also get into how NIL was supposed to distribute TV money more fairly to players and coaches, but has instead turned into fans being asked to fund the gap.

Join the conversation @rainbowwrapup and come travel with us @hisportsfans and www.HIsportsfans.com.

University of Hawaiʻi athletics took an important step forward by securing new NIL funding, but the bigger question remains: is it enough to keep UH competitive in the modern college sports landscape? We break down what the funding means, why NIL support matters more than ever, and why Hawaiʻi still faces major challenges compared to bigger-budget programs. From recruiting and retention to travel, facilities, and conference positioning, we discuss what UH needs next if it wants to truly level up. Plus, we go team-by-team through every active UH program and catch you up on the latest around Mānoa athletics.

Hawaii Men’s Volleyball is chasing the biggest prize in the sport, and we ask whether this is the team that can finish the job and win it all. Along the way, we look at the success of the program’s jersey auctions, including the attention-grabbing “unwashed” twist, and why Hawaii should lean even harder into creative fan engagement. We also discuss Jordan Lucas and the national buzz he brought into Hawaii after turning heads last week. Championship pressure, smart marketing, and star power all collide in this episode. (And we beat the 13th Game drum for UH Football. Again.)

When it looked like the team had finally turned the corner, UH gets outplayed at SJSU, even coming off a restful bye week.

With so many Hawaii alum on the Sparty sideline, it's no surprise that even with a losing record, the home team would bring added emotion to the field. But, to give up over 400 yards in the first half alone was not what we expected. And then to show no urgency down two scores in the game's final minutes...

Where do we go from here? Thankfully, it's still the Mountain West. And the team is still guaranteed a bowl. But with San Diego State in town - the team with the best odds in the MW to advance to the CFP - a spot in the title game won't be nearly easy as it was a week ago.

The Tokyo Toe is everywhere these days, and UH Fans have a right to be excited to have a player garnering national acclaim. But after local politicians rallied to change the back of his jersey, from a romanized version of his name to the Kanji given to him at birth, it riled up one columnist in Hawaii, someone acclaimed in her own right.

Did Timmy just get his mentor fired? It appears that just moments after the 'Bows layeth the smacketh down on the Rams, the CSU AD delivered the people's elbow to Jay Norvell's tenure. Could Colorado State be targeting their old assistant coach? Yes, that one.

UH Athletics will align under the Mountain West banner with subsidies phasing out, which is a good thing. Yet despite having to foot some bills for the conference, the Big West had its advantages for UH.

The PAC-12 is also still looking for a member while the MWC is equally desperate to get to 8 full members; the pool of available schools shrinking everyday.

Certainly UH had a lot of leverage and was able to use it - and there is more security remaining FBS into the future now -- but was this the "best" outcome?

After letting another one slip, this time to the Aggies, UH closes out its home slate next week against UNLV. Can the Warriors pull out at least one more W in its final two games?

We share a heartwarming story of some visitors to our Islands who can now call themselves official Rainbow Fans after a choice encounter with some SuperFans at Saturday's game.

"Low Energy" is not the way you wanna describe a college football game, but games at TC Ching have fallen into that category, even compared to any other MWC school. How the lack of tailgating and basic necessities for fans - like a viewable scoreboard - are affecting the games on campus and keeping folks from coming back.

Come meet us in San Jose at the Hukilau Restaurant Friday 11/25, the night before the UH/SJSU game, for a fun, chill get-together and meet fellow die-hards.

With three games left in the season, can the #Braddahhood win at least one more, after getting shellacked by the Bulldogs?

HawaiiFB will have to average 15,000 fans through the turnstiles to maintain its Division 1 FBS status. But where will those additional fans come from?

The SuperFans - Wayne, Shane & Sean - discuss what the school needs to do right now to improve fan experience - and if that is even important to them - or stare down the real possibility of having to move down a Division or lose the program altogether.

Wyoming rode off with the Paniolo Trophy, defeating the 'Bows 27-20 on a sometimes very rainy night in Manoa.

In the aftermath of Western Kentucky's 49-17 whipping, where do UH coaches go from here, and what can they do?

Balancing the loss of so many high profile players is a challenge already, but committing way too many penalties and turnovers is an issue that seems to be plaguing this team and coaching staff.

And where does the program go from here as more fans complain about conditions at TC Ching, expecting many of the same comforts they lost with Aloha Stadium's demise.

Without tailgating and so much more that make a college gameday, when does the program turn the corner? Particularly, since we've seen attendance drop way before the Chow era, even.

The SuperFans - Wayne, Shane & Sean - talk about what makes them the ultra fans they are, the DNA they share with this program and the generations that established this program, history that has been lost with so many changes with the program, history that some associated program don't appear to understand, either.

The saga that is the current state of the #HawaiiFB team got considerably more public when state senators convened after receiving numerous complaints about Head Coach Todd Graham and about the Athletic Department from non-football players as well.

Coming off a necessary win on Senior Night in front of another meager home crowd, #HawaiiFB now sets its sights on beating Wyoming in Laramie for a possible bowl invitation at 6-7.

Whether the 'Bows crack the postseason or not, the Athletic Department is still facing incredibly high deficits that could potentially kill the program if not for the continued and possibly increased financial assistance of the state legislature, as referenced in a TV news story on KHON.

The print media has also gotten more critical of the team, pointing at the hiring of Bo Graham as OC (which we talked about last week on the show before it came out). The Star Advertiser's Stephen Tsai also warned of the potential loss of Division I status and the potential for the school to "give it up" and/or move down to lower tier FCS.

After a close loss to the defending conference champs, #HawaiiFB is feeling the heat, especially Coach Todd Graham, and the urgency of pulling off a win in Las Cruces this weekend against New Mexico State.

SuperFans Wayne Coito, Sean Eyman & Shane "Laulauhead" Agno discuss the frustrating situation with the now-prolonged ban on fans at UH football games.

The boys also look at what UH should do with conference realignment on the horizon and why the program may not want to move into the New Aloha Stadium anyway...even if it could fill 35K.

After a shocking  - yet, not-so-shocking - announcement by Hawaii Governor David Ige that Rainbow Warrior parents would not be allowed access to the next #HawaiiFB home game, SuperFans Wayne Coito and Sean Eyman discuss what the Athletic Department must do next to respond.

The two debate the current state of the program, now being further gashed by the loss of gameday revenue, and the major disconnect between UHAD and Governor.

The Defending Mountain West champs come to town--why the 'Bows must show up for this rivalry match against San Jose State, the perfect litmus test for this team and Coach Todd Graham, who is already on thin ice with man fans.

HawaiiFB returned home to christen its new on-campus home at TC Ching Complex with a win over Portland State but with no fans in the stands to witness it.

Superfans Sean Eyman, Shane "Laulauhead" Agno and Wayne Coito discuss what it's like not getting "closure" with Aloha Stadium and, worse, not even getting to be in the first game at the new place. They boys discuss the affects on the program's long-term relationship with its fans and whether 15K might just be enough to hold everyone by the time fans are let back in.

Wayne is off to Corvallis to see the Bows and the Beavers on Saturday; what can the 'Bows do to win?

And why do UH fans really dislike Oregon State?

We discuss.

HawaiiFB plays its first home game on-campus, officially ending Aloha Stadium's long stint hosting Rainbow Warrior opponents since 1975. But, fans are still not yet allowed in to watch the team play even at Ching Field, continuing a streak of fanless home games since 2020.

Pandemic or not, this is bad for the growth of the fan base, something that has been neglected by State and University authorities for a while now.

Still, at least one UH fan managed to get his way into the stadium! We talk a little bit about his/her sneaking into the first ever game at TC Ching.

After a shellacking at the hands of the Bruins, UH superfans Wayne & Sean try their best to find some positive outcomes out of what was a really bad game for the Rainbow Warriors.

Wayne, who picked the Bows to upset UCLA, and Sean, who didn't, also look forward to Portland State, which should be a must-win game for Coach Graham, who used the word "embarrassing" to describe his team's play at the Rose Bowl.

Big12 looks to expand, narrowing down their list to UCF, BYU, Houston and Cincy. We look at what this means for the Mid Major landscape as a whole and the future of College Football in the era of NIL.

Washington State Coach Nick Rolovich is still in the news...what will happen next for the former #HawaiiFB QB who seems to be skirting the question as to whether he has been vaccinated yet or not.

Live from Dallas, Texas! We are just hours away from kickoff between the Rainbow Warriors and Cougars in the 2020 New Mexico Bowl.

We look at the most cost-effective things UH could do to make the most of hosting an on-campus contest. And how exciting a game at Ching Field could be.

We're just days away from Hawaii vs Houston in the New Mexico Bowl. With the Rainbow Warriors having departed HNL this morning, we too are making preparations here at Hawaii Sports Fans to bring you game coverage directly from Texas, where we will be credentialed media for the game on Christmas Eve...so be sure to follow along everyday!

We begin tonight with a focus on the CBS Sports report that Boise State is in talks with the AAC to join as a football-only member. Given recent reports that the Broncos were exploring option for their non-Football teams, it was thought that perhaps the team might be looking to go Independent. Dennis Dodd's article dropped just hours ago details conversations that have been on-going between BSU and American Athletic Conference officials for several months behind the backs of the Broncos' Mountain West peers.

The University of Hawai‘i football season took another surprising turn this past week when the team was extended an invitation to play the Houston Cougars - "the other UH" - in the New Mexico Bowl. At the same time, we are seeing more UH players enter the NCAA transfer portal. We discuss the numbers game that coaches will be playing in the offseason-- how can they bring in new recruits while holding spots for the Seniors who have been granted another year of eligibility?

Longtime Honolulu Star Advertiser writer Cindy Luis - whose ancestors came from the same tiny village in Madeira, Portugal as Wayne's great-grandfather, we learned! - talks Rainbow Warrior volleyball - who look forward to competing in 2021 - and Rainbow Wahine volleyball - who deal with bitter disappointment of a season cancelled. We look at the ramifications of only have some sports play versus others and the optics involved in a sticky situation for universities who juggle student-athlete safety while trying to maintain important revenue streams for their schools.

In the most 2020 thing of the crazy 2020 season, the Rainbow Warriors use a tie-breaker against Fresno State and San Diego State to secure the Mountain West conference's fourth bowl berth and will face the "other UH", the Houston Cougars, in the New Mexico Bowl.

The game won't be able in Albuquerque due to COVID measures and will be held in Frisco, TX, site of the FCS Championship game, the Toyota Stadium.

You'll hear from HSF's Wayne Coito, who gives his first impressions of the upcoming game and shares why SDSU may have shot themselves in the foot by scheduling an extra game.

Life can be hard for a college football program that finds itself outside the exclusive Power 5 club. For schools like BYU, Boise and Hawaii, the chance to be a full-fledged member of the Elite has rarely been made available; only Utah & TCU have made the jump nearly a decade ago.

It seems like all three schools have something playing against them: BYU's religious affiliation, Boise's academic reputation and Hawaii's minuscule television market are just some of the excuses we've heard.

But who of the three is in the best position right now?

When it was revealed recently that Boise St. coach Bryan Harsin had been urging his school to leave the Mountain West and that his AD at BSU had inquired with the West Coast and Big West conferences - two non-football conferences - the rumor mill fired up again. But where would the Broncos go for football?

BYU went Independent in 2011, sending their non-football sports to the WCC and yet saw their rival Utes springboard way past them when it was Utah that received the PAC12 invite.

Indy might not be the best place for football, but is BYU the best-positioned mid major? How would Boise fare as an Independent? Is it better to be in a conference?

We discuss the infusion of billions of dollars into college football and how TV rights - illuminated by a Supreme Court decision in 1984 that challenged the NCAA monopoly - have changed the way we look at amateur sports and have blown up a crater of divide between the haves and the have-nots.

He's visited 106 College Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Stadiums, and he's not stopping until he's gotten to all 130; Mike Barker joins us to talk about his journey and one of his "secret-not-so-secret" favorite teams, the University of Hawaii, whom he's watched play home at Aloha Stadium and even on the road. He recently met up with the host, Wayne Coito, and his fellow UH SuperFans in Laramie, Wyoming, where the Rainbow Warriors took on the Cowboys. Upon the conclusion of the third quarter of the game, Mike started his 10-hour drive to Lawrence, Kansas, to see the Jayhawks play the very next morning--he's as fanatical as they come.

We also talk to Mike about his tweet earlier in the day calling out the UH Pay Per View deal that requires fans in the state to pay $70 to watch the game. He talks about how this "trash deal" is destroying the fan base and how any other fan from across the country would agree.

Wayne will also preview the game between UH and undefeated Nevada Reno this Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The nation's 4th leading passing attack features some familiar faces on the sideline, including former Hawaii record-setting QB Timmy Chang, now the Tight Ends coach at Reno. UNR Head Coach Jay Norvell served on UH Coach Todd Graham's staff when the two were at Arizona State.

We also check in with Warrior Nation and get the pulse of what's going on on Social Media. How do the fans really feel about Coach Graham after starting 2-3?
