To be intimate is to be deeply known and loved. That sounds really special but it takes a lot to invite your spouse: in-to-me-see. Wow! That’s true authenticity.

How is that incorporated in marriage? Well, when we look at Genesis 2:23, we see how Adam calls Eve, bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. She was a part of him, both in how God formed her and in how he saw her as belonging with him.

Proverbs 30:18-19 says the way of a bridegroom with his bride is a marvelous mystery, almost too amazing for words. It’s a beautiful place, safe to be open, connect, touch, playfully engage, and even act foolishly in love.

Three Reasons Couples Struggle with a Deep Knowing of Each Other

  1. Trust requires vulnerability.

  2. Strong self-esteem helps you take risks.

  3. Low self-value shuts you down.

Three Reminders of Why Being Intimate Matters

  1. Treasure- You value you the process

  2. Creative- You playfully engage

  3. Sacred- You sense God’s honor

Sexual intimacy is God’s GIFT to marriage, according to the original example of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It’s up to us to celebrate all of His wonderful intentions. We get to ‘unwrap’ it and enjoy it.

To make the shift- from how sex is seen in the world to how God intended it- consider the word G.I.F.T. as an acronym of tips. Each letter stands for a unique trait.

The letter “G” represents ‘good’. God sees sexual intimacy in marriage as a very good thing.

Three Ways Sexual Intimacy Is Good

  1. Mankind is the only creation made in God’s image (3 parts connect- spirit, soul, and body)

  2. It’s an overflow of your connection- spirit, soul, and body

  3. The goal is to be MUTUALLY satisfying and respectful

Three Steps Towards Making Your Sexual Intimacy Healthier

  1. Lean into valuing your spouse

  2. Ask and listen to their desires and needs

  3. Learn relational language (use feeling words)
