Staying Up Late: Recent Episodes

Michael Gatti and Dan Frame

Staying Up Late is a show where my best friend Dan and I go down into the basement and escape from the world. This can include various substances (all of them legal), childhood nostalgia (we are both 29), conversations that contain nuance about things we fundamentally disagree on (a seemingly rare phenomenon), and a lot of jokes that will range from "Edit that out!" to "I'm so glad we just got that on the recording", which are the glue that holds it all together. We are currently still building ideas and evolving the show literally every time we record so if you'd like to follow along that process, we'd love to have you!

Michael and Dan had taken a break for a while, but we're back baby! We discuss some random things herein, and we illustrate the buttons we made. Enjoy!

We discuss Michael's profession and the merits and experiences we have with certain labels surrounding those in the world who are disabled. Warning, we do use some words that some may find triggering.

We decided to start a new season of Staying Up Late. Our older seasons will be available on Patreon, but we are getting ahead of ourselves with that one, stay tuned for updates on that as time goes on.

This one had a few funny moments. It was mostly boring but I'm just working on putting these out. I heard something valuable today. The way to get better at something is to work so hard on it that it would be impossible to not get better. Something like that. You get it.

I don't remember what we talked about in this one either other than the fact that if you tell me something, you have to be comfy with me making jokes about it later, sometimes even in front of the wrong audiences.

I haven't been posting these cause I'm a pussy ass bitch. I don't remember what we talked about and I'm not listening to it again first.

This episode was recorded late night on 8/24. We talk about why you shouldn't gatekeep your favorite art, why it can be hard to defend the police, and other stuff I can't remember right now. I'm trying to upload this quickly before leaving for work so I guess you'll just have to listen to find out. I do remember feeling at the end like it was the best episode yet. I am feeling that way more often which is a very nice feeling. Documenting the process of learning how to create this show has been fun. We talk about that too I think.

This episode was recorded and immediately uploaded on 8/21/22. I had today off while Natalie worked and I spent the day at home fully recovering from being sick, looking for dopamine, and coming up with randomly philisophical theories like if America was your boyfriend, you'd break up with him. You'll hear me sloppily explain why in this episode but the better version I wrote in the moment is on my Twitter. I then use the same analogy for Jesus. But I think religion can have a lot of positives too so relax. It's just a little culty and toxic sometimes and deserves to be called out. Anyways, we also talk about driving into oncoming traffic, how that runs in my family, and how even the seemingly most "random" things can have such massive impacts on the course of your life. We talk a little about my family and recent conversations I've had with them, I vow to call my friends more, and Natalie tells me about a 60-something year old Christian coworker telling her other 23 year old coworker that her shorts are too short. This is what I mean, religion has some good and I don't think anyone should have their pussy or ass out at Home Depot but assuming you're right that Jesus exists and did all that and is the son of God, I still don't think God actually cares who you love or if you say fuck or how you dress. But hey we're on a rock flying through infinite space so what do I know! Enjoy the episode. It was fun. This show is fun. It drives me crazy trying to make it and I'm learning a lot about life and myself, but I love doing it. Excited to see what we can do with it.

Thanks for listening. And reading.

After trying to record an episode last night with our friend Tori and making a massive rookie tech mistake, I ended up recording an episode tonight on my own. Tori will be on soon to describe her secret pocket though, don't worry. I talk about an upcoming family event that should be wildly interesting, another conversation I had with Theresa (my step mom) regarding low-income housing, and also the homeless situation in California. I also talk about asking Natalie's family about how they shower despite only meeting them a handful of times. I don't remember what else we talked about cause it's 2:20am and I just am recording and posting now, no editing but I bet it was fuckin hilarious.

This episode starts with an intro that took us twice to record because I'm still getting used to all this technology. It explains the context of the conversation that it picks up in the middle of with my dad. We talk about his mom, driving, the circle jerk he had with his coworker, and who I would like my brother Jon to have sex with, if I was allowed to choose. It's not who you think. These episodes keep getting better and I am so pumped that we decided to make this.

On this episode, recorded and immediately uploaded on 7/26 after implicating my coworker in a hate crime in the previous attempt, I discuss my conversation with my dad from the night before. Spoiler alert, it ended up with him taking his wife out to dinner so maybe this whole "Michael breaks up marriages" tide is turning. But Jon is the glue that holds the family together and I told him that too. Anyways, it's time to finish my burrito. Just listen if you want, it's by far the best episode we have recorded thus far.

In this episode, it takes me 3 hours to tell the story of my day. We start with my near death experience (NOT CLICKBAIT), and somehow find ourselves talking about race, victim blaming, peeing in water bottles, and the fact that Ted Bundy had a limit on the number of maggots allowed on the dead bodies he was fucking. I also gave away the address to my girlfriend's great aunt and uncles house and wanted to bleep it but got sick of listening to my own voice so it's still in there. The only thing that's bleeped is the last name of a kid I tried to convince to go to church with me when I was going to RIOT as a teenager. I kinda narc on Snoop Dogg and Natalie gets mad at me because I got a Taco Bell Bacon Breakfast Crunchwrap for myself. We got them the next morning so she's fine now. Theresa (my step mom) calls and tells me they can't talk so I make them talk to me as long as I can. She said they'd call me but it's been a week plus and they haven't so. Silly boomers. Anyways, I realized I got distracted a lot and didn't finish some stories I wanted to so I'll work on that and I also need to clarify what Natalie's talking about if she's not on mic. But I do think this has some funny parts and I'm happy I figured out how to do this. Now it's just about making it as good as I can. Enjoy.

This episode starts with the raw audio of me trying to set up the equipment as we got ready to record. I'm learning this shit on the fly so bear with me. I also liked the authenticity of leaving it in to document where we are in this process of making a show. I did end up adding the button of Jon saying "red flag" to the soundboard along with a couple other sounds so that's where that comes from. He isn't on this call. After a quick audio test, we call Natalie's mom Maureen. The conversation is a little slow at times as we talk about her recent injury and some other things. However, things take a turn when an outing happens that doesn't involve taking kids with Autism to the Gilbert House.

On this episode, recorded on 7/2/22, I call and talk to my younger brother Jon (23) after an annoying day at work. He has Down Syndrome which we talk about a little while discussing his big tongue. The boomers get in some dumb fight about antivirals or whatever while he and I have quite the conversation over the next half hour or so before my girlfriend, Natalie gets home and joins the conversation. Jon and I reminisce about Wildlife Safari, the Pumpkin Patch, and Halloween. We also remember the time he absolutely crushed my dad on Christmas morning. I tell him about the embarrassing thing that happened this week and at the end I really make him laugh while grossing everybody else out.
