Rabbi Moses Haber, LCSW, is the founder and director of Makor, a specialized recovery center that integrates Torah-based spirituality with clinical mental health care. He leads Torah classes, therapy groups and sees individual clients across Makor’s locations in both Brooklyn and Deal, New Jersey. In addition to his clinical practice, he serves as the Rabbi at Congregation Shaare Shalom, in Brooklyn. He resides in Brooklyn with his wife and four children, balancing a vibrant home life with his lifelong devotion to communal leadership and healing.

Madison Rachel Margolin is an author, journalist, and facilitator, trained in Lev Emunah Therapy (based in Kabbalistic and Breslov concepts), narrative therapy, and MAPS Zendo Sit (psychedelic space holding). Her first book is a journalistic memoir entitled Exile & Ecstasy: Growing Up with Ram Dass and Coming of Age in the Jewish Psychedelic Underground (Hay House, 2023), while her second and third books are more educational: The DoubleBlind Guide to Psychedelics (Artisan Books, 2026; co-written with Shelby Hartman) and, forthcoming, Judaism is Psychedelic: A Practical Guide (Ayin Press, 2027). She is the co-founder of both DoubleBlind Magazine and the Jewish Psychedelic Summit, and hosts a podcast on the Be Here Now Network called Set & Setting. She has written for dozens of publications including Vice, Rolling Stone, and Playboy, and has presented on psychedelics, Judaism, and more at conferences around the world, spanning NYC, Denver, London, and Israel. Rabbi Shmuel Skaist, LPC, CSAT is a clinician specializing in sex addiction, compulsive and problematic sexual behaviors, betrayal trauma, relational repair, and broader behavioral and process addictions. He works with individuals and couples navigating sexual compulsivity, secrecy, integrity violations, attachment wounds, and the relational fallout of betrayal.
He brings over 35 years of experience in Jewish education to his clinical work, integrating addiction-informed care, attachment-based approaches, trauma-informed treatment, evidence-based modalities, mindfulness meditation, and relational accountability. His work pays particular attention to the impact of childhood trauma, betrayal trauma in partners, and religious or spiritual trauma, as well as the complex ways that sexuality, shame, values, faith, and identity intersect in treatment.
Shmuel is completing his PhD in Counseling at Montclair State University, where his dissertation research focuses on betrayal trauma and integrity violations in intimate partnerships, including a comparison of symptoms among male and female betrayed partners. He also serves as a counselor at SINAI Schools, supporting adolescents with developmental delays and autism spectrum disorder.

Micah Landau has spent the last twelve years studying the shamanism of the indigenous people of the Peruvian Basin and practicing as a psychotherapist where his work is informed by Somatic Internal Family Systems.
He is a graduate of the Silberman School of Social Work, where he earned a master’s degree. He also holds certifications in scuba diving, mixology, Thai massage, and Reiki. Asher is a spiritual entrepreneur, human connection coach and Rabbi in Southern California. His story began at home as a young child where all seemed well from the outside. As the youngest by nine years, he felt a horrible sense of abandonment. His loneliness was compounded by his father’s prominence as a rabbi and community leader where the pressure to appear as role models was insufferable. This resulted in a childhood eating disorder and drug use by age 14.
Asher was 33 when he lost his multi-million-dollar business, with the resulting bankruptcy destroying what little self-worth he had as a provider to his family – he had hit rock-bottom. Asher found his road to recovery through the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous, where despite the circle of anonymous faces, it was truly the first time in his life he felt the power of shared human connection through service to self and others.
The experience marked the debut of an odyssey of self-discovery, trading ego for vulnerability, and leaving the pursuit of pleasure for the pursuit of meaning. Asher decidedly dedicated the rest of his career to helping others help themselves “restore wholeness” in their lives.
Armed with a renewed sense of self, profound life experience, and entrepreneurial passion, Asher founded Transcend in 2008, building an internationally recognized recovery community. I've been gone. Here's why.

Michoel Muchnik (b. 1952, Philadelphia) blends formal training from the Rhode Island School of Design with Chassidic scholarship from the Rabbinical College of America. While celebrated for his early storybook-style art and illustrations, his recent work features intricate mixed-media bas-reliefs using crushed metal and polymer clay. His art is held in global collections, and has been exhibited in many places including the Brooklyn Museum. Major projects include the permanent 22-foot bas relief mural titled "The Treasured Land" at the Jewish Children’s Museum in Brooklyn, and a 40-foot mural at the Tzfas Visitor Center at Mikveh Chana in the holy city of Tzfas, Israel. Additionally, Muchnik designs institutional donor walls and has illustrated numerous children's books.
He takes great pride in his children and grandchildren, some who
are Chabad shluchim and artists in their own right.

Debbie Akerman PhD, LCSW CSAT is a social worker with years of experience in addiction, recovery and trauma. A wife and mother to 11 biologic and 8 chosen children, Dr. Akerman completed her dissertation on addiction and the orthodox Jewish community. Asher is a spiritual entrepreneur, human connection coach and Rabbi in Southern California. His story began at home as a young child where all seemed well from the outside. As the youngest by nine years, he felt a horrible sense of abandonment. His loneliness was compounded by his father’s prominence as a rabbi and community leader where the pressure to appear as role models was insufferable. This resulted in a childhood eating disorder and drug use by age 14.
Asher was 33 when he lost his multi-million-dollar business, with the resulting bankruptcy destroying what little self-worth he had as a provider to his family – he had hit rock-bottom. Asher found his road to recovery through the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous, where despite the circle of anonymous faces, it was truly the first time in his life he felt the power of shared human connection through service to self and others.
The experience marked the debut of an odyssey of self-discovery, trading ego for vulnerability, and leaving the pursuit of pleasure for the pursuit of meaning. Asher decidedly dedicated the rest of his career to helping others help themselves “restore wholeness” in their lives.
Armed with a renewed sense of self, profound life experience, and entrepreneurial passion, Asher founded Transcend in 2008, building an internationally recognized recovery community. Avi Fishoff is a Jewish educator and crisis guide who founded Home SWEEEET Home (2003‑14) and went on to develop the “Twisted Parenting” (TP) approach.

Richard Altabe serves as principal and executive vice president for institutional advancement at the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, roles he has held since 2016, and as an adjunct professor at Touro College since 2021. With over 35 years in K-12 education, he previously served as headmaster at Shaare Torah, director of Limudei Chol at the National Society of Hebrew Day Schools, and executive director of TOVA Mentoring. His earlier roles include principal at Magen David Yeshivah, dean of secular studies at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, and founding director of Simcha Day Camp. Mr. Altabe has contributed articles on education to Hamechanech and Jewish Observer and has been active in leadership roles within Jewish educational and community organizations, including founding the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance and serving as vice president of CAHAL for 30 years.
Mr. Altabe holds a BS in biology from NYU, an MS in education and an advanced certificate in educational administration from Brooklyn College, completed the Summer Principal Program at Harvard, and is a certified school district administrator in New York State. Honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula, he takes pride in developing special education and afterschool programs, attributing his success to his passion for education and dedication to student support. Looking ahead, he plans to focus on consulting to advise schools on system-wide instructional best practices.

Eli Lebowicz is a very Jewish comedian. Like very Jewish. He has performed all over the US, Canada, and Israel telling jokes to Jews at shul dinners, Passover programs and other times when they’re eating. He regularly opens for Elon Gold and was featured in the Chosen Comedy Festival in 2023.
Eli is also one of the co-creators of J-Sketch, the Orthodox Jewish world’s recent viral sketch group. You have likely seen some of these sketches forwarded to a WhatsApp group you’re in.

Originally from Monsey NY, Rav Luger completed high school in Yeshiva Shaarei Torah and then continued to learn in the prestigious Yeshiva of Toras Simcha and Yeshiva Gedola Matisyahu. Afterward, he continued his learning in Sh’or Yoshuv while completing his degree in Business Administration. After making aliyah, Rav Luger joined Kollel Tzeiri Haleviim, a semicha Kollel under the auspices of HaRav Hagaon Avigdor Nevenzahl, Shlita. He then became a Rebbe in Fisher’s Yeshiva on Moshav Matityahu, ultimately opening and leading the Old City branch. He also gives an exciting and engaging weekly hashkafa shiur at Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh and has led many groups and chaburos on mindfulness and 12 step programs. Additionally, Rav Luger has served as a chinuch consultant and mental health askan.
With a keen understanding of today’s challenges, Rav Luger has an unparalleled ability to connect to each talmid and help them find their own path within the Torah world. Currently, he resides in the French Hill neighborhood of Yerushalayim with his wife and children.

Abie Rotenberg is a prolific Orthodox Jewish musician, composer, and entertainer living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has been producing music since the mid-1970s with a style which has been described as "soft and sweet" with a strong folk influence.
Rotenberg grew up in Queens, New York, surrounded by other up-and-coming religious Jewish musicians, including Eli Teitelbaum, who directed the first Pirchei boys choir, as well as Rabbi Baruch Chait and Label Sharfman who attended yeshiva with him. Rotenberg studied piano and taught himself guitar at a young age.
Rotenberg has also been a main fixture of the annual HASC: A Time for Music concerts. He has produced a children's audio series called the "Marvelous Midos Machine" comprising four volumes, with all original material.
He has produced: D'veykus, Aish, Journeys, and A LOT more.
Most consider him to be the most influential Jewish composer of our time.

Rabbi Yoni Fischer is the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Matisyahu (Fischer’s) in Eretz Yisroel.

Akiva Perlman, PhD., is an international speaker on topics of abuse, addiction, and trauma. He has educated several hundred frum social workers from our community and is currently serving as a professor at Wurzweiler School of Social work. Dr. Perlman is clinical director of ODA’s Wellness Institute, a clinic which serves the chasideshe community in Williamsburg. Chaim Meisels, 29, is the great-grandson of the Satmar Rebbe, R’ Beirach Moshe. About eight years ago, Chaim chose to immigrate to Israel and enlist in the IDF. Chaim left everything behind, enlisted in the IDF combat unit, and was sworn in at the Kotel. Chaim served as a commanding officer in the Egoz program, a special forces unit and then was in Golani. Now he is devoting his life to the organization Nevut, which helps lone soldiers after they leave the army.

David has spent over a decade working in the healthcare field.
He majored in business and marketing at Hofstra University and completed his course studies at Touro College. Following his college career, David became a representative for restaurant owners, transforming franchises into successful leaders in the industry. He then decided to transition into Healthcare as Chief Administrator & Principal of Hollis Women’s Center.
In 2015, his passion and personal long-term recovery story led him into the substance abuse treatment field, where he founded Starbent Recovery, an all-Women’s Recovery Residence in New York. In 2019, David relocated to Florida to join Onward Living as Executive Director. His extensive experience, along with his knowledge and compassion, made him a valued member of the team. Most importantly, he improved community outreach and referent relations and has continued to build his reputation of honesty, integrity, and superior client care.
In 2021, David established Genesis Israel together with Aaron Levine as a global model and highly sophisticated abuse rehabilitation for young Americans in the heart of Jerusalem.

Menachem is Director of The Living Room (TLR), a clubhouse program for Jewish young adults in recovery from addiction with branches in Brooklyn, Monsey, and The Five Towns as well as Hollywood, Fl. Menachem is Editor-in-chief of The Light Revealed, a social media content publisher serving the Jewish recovery community, and is Executive Vice President of Genesis Treatment, a comprehensive and dynamic substance use disorder and trauma treatment facility in Jerusalem. Menachem has authored three books; Stepping Out of the Abyss: A Jewish Guide to the Twelve Steps, Consciously: Six Steps to living vibrantly with our creator, and his latest book due out in March called Acceptance: A path to inner healing. Menachem received his master’s degree in social work from the Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social Work and lives in Cedarhurst, NY, with his wife Naomi.

Alex Czertok started The Monsey Lighthouse along with his wife Bayla. The Lighthouse is a safe non judgemental space for over 70 girls from the wide Monsey area aged 15-23 years old. Alex works in the real estate field but has been engaged for over 20 years in outreach and inreach program for teens and young adults. The Lighthouse is the best.

Rabbi Dov Oliver, a native of Melbourne, Australia, assumed leadership of Hillel of Rockland in 2007. Thanks to his quirky sense of humor and caring approach, Rabbi Oliver is sought after by students of all affiliations for counseling, advice and friendship. As one of Birthright Israel’s most popular chaperones, he has led 26 trips. Rabbi Oliver studied for the rabbinate in Montreal and was ordained in Tzfat, Israel. He teaches in the Religious Studies department at Rockland Community College. When he’s not at RCC, he is either on the town golf course around the corner or at Citi Field, cheering on his beloved Mets with his three daughters.
Shevy Oliver, a 2002 graduate of RCC, was active in the early days of Hillel of Rockland. She and her husband, Rabbi Dov Oliver, lived in Australia for three years, conducting outreach among the Jewish people of the outback. She likes to hang out with students on campus or, whenever possible, on the ski slopes or hiking trails. Shevy is known for her non-judgmental approach and creative flair. She enjoys adventures and art projects with her three daughters.

Pinny Brecher LCSW CASAC is the executive clinical director and Co-founder of Daas Wellness Center a mental health facility in Monsey NY. Supervising over 30 therapists, Daas provides individual psycotherapy, school services, medication management, and group therapy. Renowned for his kindness and authenticity, Rabbi Babad has always harbored a passion for supporting and encouraging those who need it most.
A life coach and CASAC-T, Rabbi Babad opened his first drop-in center 22 years ago in Brooklyn serving Chassidic youth, which became a safe haven for at-risk youth battling mental health and substance abuse.
Several years later, in 2010, Rabbi Babad opened his yeshiva, Anuvim, as a prevention program for struggling teens. On the heels of the Yeshiva’s success and at the request of many parents, he founded camp Anuvim in 2011, a successful summer program in Upsta New York.
In 2015, Rabbi Babad opened a second drop in center, this time in Boro Park, called “Our Home.” Located at 1225 Street, it came to be known affectionately as “1225.”

JJ Rieder, LCSW graduated from Wurzweiler School of Social Work in 2006 and then completed his post-graduate training at The Ackerman Institute for the Family. JJ spent the early part of his social work career helping children and families through Ohel, JBFCS, Shalom Task Force, and other community mental health organizations in New York. He is currently in private practice in Howell NJ, and helps couples and families dealing with various challenges and dynamics. Akiva Perlman, PhD., is an international speaker on topics of abuse, addiction, and trauma. He has educated several hundred frum social workers from our community and is currently serving as a professor at Wurzweiler School of Social work. Dr. Perlman is clinical director of ODA’s Wellness Institute, a clinic which serves the chasideshe community in Williamsburg. He maintains a small practice in Fresh Meadows where he resides with his Wife Tamar and children.

Shim Perlman, LMSW, is a licensed social worker who joined the Boys Our Place clinical team during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on providing one-on-one counseling during this difficult time.
In addition to his work at Our Place, Shim maintains a private practice, specializing in working with the elderly population. A native of Far Rockaway, NY, Shim received his degree from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work in 2010. He is the youngest of eight siblings, in a family full of social workers and licensed therapists!
Shim’s primary therapeutic technique is derived from Primal Therapy, as he seeks to assist each client with identifying the core issue that is holding them back from realizing their own potential and greatness. Shim is particularly passionate about his work at Our Place, as he helps young people begin to unlock their potential and build brighter futures.

Prior to founding Project Extreme in 2001, A.Y. served as the Regional Director for the Greater Midwestern Region of National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY) for over 19 years. During his tenure, A.Y. and his staff created and implemented hundreds of diverse programs for unaffiliated Jewish teenagers, with 1100 annual attendees. Programming included retreats, cross country trips, summer programs, weekend activities, Shabbat and daily prayer services, and mentoring programs.

Rabbi Shmuel Skaist studied at Yeshiva Sh’or Yoshuv, enjoying a close relationship with Rabbi Shlomo Friefeld z”tl. For the last 35 years, he has taught Torah and been involved in Kiruv across the US and Israel. Rabbi Skaist is also a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and has performed regularly in Greenwich Village, college campuses, and top venues from NY to LA for many years. He was the founder of Shabbat Tent, an effort dedicated to strengthening Jewish identity at Music Festivals across the USA. An energetic and inspiring speaker, Rabbi Skaist taught at several Yeshivas in Israel and as an adjunct professor at Bar Ilan University before returning to the US. For the last 20 years, he has been the Rosh Yeshiva at The Yeshiva of Newark at IDT. After many years of providing Pastoral counseling to people seeking advice on hashkafic and personal issues, Rabbi Skaist returned to school, earned a Master’s Degree in Clinical Counseling, and expects to finish his Ph.D. in 2026. Meanwhile, he is a therapist dealing primarily with couple counseling at Jewish Family Services in Passaic, NJ.

Join me as I sit down with my good friend Shmulie Brown. Shmulie is a licensed therapist who resides in Passaic, NJ. He is the assistant coordinator of a clinical case management program servicing individuals in the forensic population who have major psychiatric disorders. He also sees youth and adolescents privately for therapy. Shmulie graduated from Touro College with a Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters in Mental Health Counseling; he is also a certified alcohol and substance abuse professional, receiving credentialing from the Israel Certification Board of Addiction Professionals. Shmulie is one of the cofounders of the Passaic Chill, and has been working with at-risk youth since 2006.

In this episode I sit down with two good friends who work with me at Our Place. Isaac Cohen who has been a helper and a healer for many years and has great insights into the topic of growth and healing. Micah Landau who is a social worker, talks about his experience with therapy and helping people heal thru that modality. Micah is an LMSW and IFS Somatic practitioner.
Tzvi entered the field of recovery as a drug and alcohol counselor. The understood importance of treatment and feeling of purpose inspired his career change. With immense gratitude, he transitioned as the Director at Serenity Services. Tzvi then became the current CEO of Ascendant NY. Incorporating his professional and personal experiences, is a guiding force to provide treatment with humility, compassion, and dignity. As the leader, he works with his team to evolve the traditional culture of detox facilities. He seeks to fill the gaps where treatment falls short. Tzvi is cultivating individualized client-focused care- emphasizing that every person who walks through the door matters.
When Tzvi founded the YY House Foundation, these values were and remain most important. Every dinner held at his home is the anchor of the YY House, where individuals in recovery come together. He takes pride in the non-profit’s growth- now helping those struggling with access to resources, services, and more. Addiction is a disease defined by isolation. He continually works to create spaces that replace isolation with community. Whether at Ascendant NY, a YY House dinner, or at home with his beloved family- Tzvi remembers why he chose this path. He views his position as a gift and opportunity to provide someone support while seeking treatment. His passion has never wavered when saying, “There is help and recovery is possible.”

With 20 years of experience working with at risk teens, Moshe develops and runs year round programming and support services for at risk teens including the Gavz Boyz traveling summer camp, which has been run under Amudim’s auspices for the past five years. In addition to his day to day activities as a case manager, Moshe has also been involved in many of Amudim’s school based awareness events and Narcan training sessions held in conjunction with the NYPD. A member of the chevra kadisha and a volunteer police and prison chaplain, Moshe is an avid snowboarder and outdoor enthusiast who uses those interests to engage young adults in healthy outlets and build positive relationships.

Shim Perlman, LMSW, is a licensed social worker who joined the Boys Our Place clinical team during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on providing one-on-one counseling during this difficult time.
In addition to his work at Our Place, Shim maintains a private practice, specializing in working with the elderly population. A native of Far Rockaway, NY, Shim received his degree from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work in 2010. He is the youngest of eight siblings, in a family full of social workers and licensed therapists!
Shim’s primary therapeutic technique is derived from Primal Therapy, as he seeks to assist each client with identifying the core issue that is holding them back from realizing their own potential and greatness. Shim is particularly passionate about his work at Our Place, as he helps young people begin to unlock their potential and build brighter futures.

Sony sits down with Eli Erenthal a colleague and friend who has been in the trenches helping young adults struggling with addiction and other mental health issues. Eli is one of the founders of the Minyan Shelanu Drop-in Center in Lakewood NJ and is currently the Director of Operations at Our Village Sober Living home in Pomona NY. They discuss how they got involved in this field. They get real on the challenges and successes that people in the helping world live with on a daily basis.
Sony Perlman LMSW, has been working in the field of addiction for over two decades. For the past sixteen years he has been the Clinical Director of Boys Our Place, a full-service drop-in center for young men struggling with addiction, mental health issues and many other difficult life situations.
Sony has a wide range of professional experience across the mental health and addiction spectrum; he has worked in the fields of teen mentoring, foster care, and inpatient drug rehabilitation. Recently, Sony served as the Clinical Director of Arena Sober Living, a high-end sober living facility in Rockland County that boasted a long-term success rate that was second to none. In 2019, Sony opened Our Place’s first sober living home, Our Village Sober Living, a 12-bed facility, where he continues to serve as the Clinical Director. It is Sony’s dream to expand the Our Village concept to include additional homes for those underserved in our community.
Sony was educated in The New School of Social Research and has his graduate degree from Wurzweiler School of Social Work. In having worked with thousands of young people, Sony has not met a single individual that was not capable of healing themselves.
