This episode is a live panel from Stellar's Meridian 2025 conference at Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro. The panel, hosted by BCR founder Aaron Stanley, explores stablecoin adoption for local solutions in emerging markets.
Joining him are:
Sebastian Siseles, CEO of Vesseo
Ibrahim Abdul Hussein, CEO, Digibank
Camila Rioja, Executive Director of Plexus Institute
Justin Norman, founder of The Flip
The conversation reveals that successful crypto adoption hinges on deep localization rather than technological sophistication.
Ibrahim shares how Digibank created a 2,000+ location cash-out network across war-torn MENA regions where traditional remittance services don't exist, serving users who may not even own smartphones.
Camila discusses bringing Brazil's 180+ existing community currencies on-chain to enhance transparency in public goods distribution without disrupting established systems.
Sebastian explains how Vesseo abstracts blockchain complexity entirely, soon launching crypto-to-fiat cards that convert USDC at point-of-sale.
The panel's consensus: the most impactful projects hide the technology, solve hyper-local problems, and meet users within their existing financial behaviors rather than demanding adoption of entirely new paradigms

Raagulan Pathy is CEO of KAST. He joins host Aaron Stanley to discuss his stablecoin neobank that has achieved remarkable traction across emerging markets in a short period.
KAST serves as a bank-like platform for crypto-native users and global remote workers, allowing them to deposit stablecoins and crypto, earn yield, and spend through cards worldwide. Pathy revealed that KAST has reached 500,000 app downloads with exceptional user engagement metrics - 64% weekly active users and 30% daily active users - while growing 20% monthly and processing over $20 million in volume within 14 months.
The platform targets four key customer segments: crypto natives, stablecoin-first users from the Global South, remote workers, and mobile affluent individuals who operate across multiple countries. Latin America represents roughly 30% of KAST's global business, with Brazil being a particularly strong market due to locals seeking global banking alternatives and strong brand affinity for premium crypto products.

Brazil's Central Bank shocked the market by removing blockchain from its signature Drex CBDC project and pivoting to a simpler vision. After driving Brazil's blockchain adoption for years, is this a rug pull or an opportunity for private sector leadership?
Host Aaron Stanley is joined by Gustavo Cunha (Fintrender CEO, former banking executive) and Marcos Sarres (GoLedger CEO, Hyperledger specialist) to unpack this pivotal moment.
We explore why Ethereum's privacy challenges, extended development timelines, and multi-bank coordination proved too complex, plus the broader factors including US stablecoin trends and Central Bank leadership changes.
Despite the apparent setback, DREX transformed Brazil's financial landscape - major banks now have 20-30 person blockchain teams and multiple tokenization projects are launching. The key question: who will fill the leadership vacuum and drive Brazil's tokenized future forward?

For this episode I am joined by Cryptum CEO André Salem to discuss illuminating new research exploring crypto adoption and sentiment in Brazil that him and his team have produced.
Cryptum is a Brazil-based blockchain-as-a-service stack that provides tools for developers and companies looking to build blockchain and Web3 applications.
André and his team recently commissioned an extensive survey of more than 1000 consumers and financial market professionals assessing their views toward cryptocurrency and the Web3 ecosystem in Brazil.
We discuss the main findings from the survey, including:
Most Brazilians have a positive view of what is happening on the Digital Real front given the Central Bank’s track record of delivering on previous financial innovation projects.
There is still lacking a sound understanding of crypto, Web3 and how these concepts intertwine with Digital Real, though people see reduced bureaucracy and more efficient financial transactions as a potential benefit
The risk of hacking remains a significant concern among concerns
Most financial services companies don’t have a good understanding of what the Digital Real means for their business models, nor are they ready to adopt these technologies.
Tokenization is seen as a bridge use case between Web3 and TradFi, as companies can become fintechs once they are able to tokenize their own assets. However, there is still a gap with regard to talent and skills in these areas.
Like it or not, the US is still the most important crypto market in the world, and if you’re a professional operating in this industry you need to be paying serious attention to what’s happening there.
So to help you do that, Antonio and I invited two experts from the US to help us synthesize what’s going on with these SEC lawsuits and understand how observers in markets like Brazil should be interpreting these events.
We run through the madness of the last couple of weeks in the US, including:
We break down these events and assess just how bad the situation is, the road ahead for crypto in the US and the outlook for much-needed crypto legislation, and implications for other markets like Brazil.

The parcel of land is then represented by an NFT, as well as relevant metadata, which can be purchased by publicly-traded companies looking to keep carbon credits or biodiversity credits on their balance sheet.

News broke last week that the CVM, the Brazilian SEC, referred Binance to federal prosecutors for allegedly offering crypto derivatives products to Brazilian customers in defiance of a cease and desist order.
Further reporting this week has revealed that the CVM’s inquiry began in June 2022 after a Binance customer service representative told a Portal do Bitcoin reporter, posing as a trader, that he could access the derivatives products by simply changing the language on the Binance interface from Brazilian Portuguese to Portuguese from Portugal.
In December 2022, the CVM referred the matter to federal prosecutors in São Paulo for further investigation asserting that there appears to be evidence of criminal activity.
I asked Cláudio Rubin, editor-in chief of Portal do Bitcoin, to come on and discuss what his team has learned about these investigations over the last week.

Portal do Bitcoin reporter Fernando Martines joins the podcast to discuss the emergence and collapse of Braiscompany - a R$1.5 billion (US$289 million) cryptocurrency pyramid scheme that operated out of the northeastern state of Paraíba. In what some have dubbed as Brazil's last major bitcoin Ponzi scheme, the operation involved everyone from local politicians and business leaders to an estimated 10,000 retail investors from around the country.
Braiscompany provided handsome monthly payouts to investors while enriching its extravagant and charismatic founders Antonio Neto Ais and Fabrícia Campos. The music stopped in late 2022 when it ceased making payments amid the crypto market collapse, prompting a backlash from angry customers and inquiries from authorities.
The company's headquarters were raided on February 16 by Federal Police. However, Neto Ais and Campos were nowhere to be seen when authorities arrived and remain at-large, with some suspecting that they fled to Argentina. João Marco Braga da Cunha is a Brazilian economist and portfolio manager with Hashdex, Brazil's largest crypto asset manager. In this episode we discuss a proposal being propagated recently by Brazilian and Argentine leaders about creating a shared currency between the two countries as a way to stimulate trade and reduce dependence on the US dollar. The idea generated a lot of coverage within the crypto community, as even Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong weighed in on Twitter suggesting that the countries should simply adopt bitcoin.
João Marco explains the origin of this shared currency idea, why it might have actually worked in the 1990s when both countries had similar monetary policies, the likely political motivations behind the proposal and what role crypto or digital currency could play here.
Also take a look at this op-ed on the subject that João Marco wrote for CoinTelegraph

Isac Costa is a computer scientist, a former regulator with the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission and a professor at Ibmec and Insper - two of Brazil's top business schools. He's also been keenly observing the development of legislation that would create a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies and digital assets in Brazil. This legislation was expected to pass earlier this summer but stalled amid disagreements over key provisions like reporting timeframes and asset segregation rules. TLDR is that with upcoming elections, the outlook for this bill passing this year is murky.
Isac and I go deep into the nuances of this proposed legislation. We discuss:
history and background of crypto regulation in Brazil and previous attempts to legislate this matter
core objectives of this legislation and the various stakeholders involved in influencing its direction
tensions between local exchanges, overseas exchanges and tradfi institutions moving into crypto
the rulemaking process that will commence once legislation is signed - ie the fight will shift from the legislative to the regulatory front at the Central Bank and CVM
If you're closely tracking Brazil crypto legislative developments, I highly recommend following Isac on Linkedin
