Exploring the prayers of 3 Kings of Judah - Hezekiah, Asa, and Jehoshaphat - who battled overwhelming enemies, Judith Kambia Obatusa, JKO, focuses on how to pray when faced with challenges from people, situations, or systems that are much more powerful than us.

If you’ve ever been helpless before a formidable hater, this episode will teach you how to ask God for help to overcome and emerge victorious.

Nuggets of Wisdom in this episode

Even the most righteous and faithful can face adversity.

Worship is a powerful weapon in times of difficulty—when we shift our focus to God, He gives us victory.

In this multidirectional episode, Dr. Azumah shares how the fiery flames of a burning car taught her empathy and made her a better doctor. She also explains the impact of racism on how a person of colour experiences impostor syndrome and why empowering black and brown girls should be prioritized. In addition, she described the role of where one lives in a person’s life outcomes.

Nuggets of wisdom in this episode

It's good to plan, but it's also good to be flexible in life

We've experienced a lot of prejudice and racism, and empowering girls that look like us is a way of transferring the hurt, the pain

Prophylactically empowering young black girls, young brown girls will help them be confident and increase their trajectory for success

It's hard for your brain to release creativity if you are scared that you’re not supposed to be in that space

There's no race better than your race

There's a correlation between confidence and performance

There's a role for non black people to be allies because allies help create equity

Either one of the 3Ds of debt, divorce and death can derail a person’s life but when they hit Pallu together, she fought back with service. From being comfortable with the uncomfortable, she became a comforter to others.

Nuggets of wisdom in this episode

When we give to others, we help ourselves.

Seeing your shortcomings as challenges to overcome is part of the positive self talk

Being kinder to yourself, being positive and having positive self talk is just as important as taking medication for a chronic medical condition.

How we talk to ourselves frames how we are in our relationships with others.

Your past does not determine your future.

If you don't make yourself a priority, no one else will.

All we need is one cheerleader to tell us we can, and then support us until we see that we can.

In this concluding episode, Iyaiya Thomas Ofem tells us how she met a mentor whose encouragement changed her story from fulltime housewife to a women’s empowerment changemaker.

Nuggets of wisdom in this episode

Respect and honour everyone you meet on your way, you never know who has been placed on your path to help you.

Humility has rewards.

Many times, the favours we do for others returns as a favour for ourselves.

Always be willing to learn.

All things work together for our good. Not only great, happy things, some sad, terrible things

Until you have learnt your lesson from that experience, it will keep repeating itself.

Wherever you are, you can start with what you have.

You are enough to make a difference.

Once you can change your mindset and believe in yourself, you will achieve whatever you want to achieve.

Beginning with a heartwarming conversation about the struggles of a housewife and homemaker with Iyaiya Thomas Ofem, entrepreneur and founder of Evolve360 Woman Initiative and Conference.

Sometimes our life’s circumstances could make us feel that we’re not doing as well as others and we just want to hide from the questions and judgments. Iya tells us how serving at her children’s Parents Teachers Association led her to find who she truly was.

Nuggets of wisdom in this episode

Keeping the goal in mind and showing up where it matters can be your salvation.

Yes, service is sacrifice but a life of service never goes unrewarded.

Respect and honour others, you never know who has been placed on your path to help you.

Self Care used to sound like just mere words to me. In fact, at a point, those words began to traumatize me. Hearing them made me feel judged and inadequate. I did not think I had the resources – time, money, strength – to afford it. I was afraid to try. Today, with the help of many, including guests on Messy Can’t Stop Her, I now know that it is more about the intention and the steps, no matter how small.

I’ve learnt that even taking a moment to breathe deeply can make a difference in my life. In this episode, I share what I’ve learnt and how my lack of self care can impact my generations. Sadly, I am not alone in the fears I had. To every one of my sisters in the trenches of life, this is my encouragement to you, please prioritize your self care. Messy won’t stop you.

Separation is not the end-all and be-all when it comes to domestic violence because in many cases, the impact of the abuse comes along on your journey to freedom. When children are involved, the impact can unfold very slowly with mega chaos erupting just when you think the storm is over.

In this three-part story, Sonia shares her experience as a mother navigating the mental health and substance use system to help her teenage son recover from the impact of their father’s emotional abuse.

Sonia’s journey captures the essence of this quote by Barbara Kingsolver, American novelist, essayist and poet - Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.

We hear the question “Why didn’t she leave?” so many times when discussing domestic violence.

Dr. Anne Burnley (DrAhne), physician and US Army combat veteran left. She tells us how she was able to overcome the fears and doubts and take that step. In this first part of her story, DrAhne shares how love empowered her to leave a marriage that had literally taken her voice and become hell on earth. Trigger Warning: SI, mention of sucde
Have you ever felt unworthy about stepping up to share? Have you ever been made to feel unworthy by others? You are not alone. It may be the harsh reality of the life that we live but it can also be a battle that we win if we push through those thoughts. Indeed, it is a mental health battle.

JKO takes a step back in this episode to share her struggles with unworthiness and her mental health journey with anxiety and depression.

Death is final. Nicole’s story explains why more focus is placed on physical abuse than other types of abuse. The courts ruled that her death was not premeditated, and they are now set to release her murderer on parole.

Andrea Henning tells us how the events that tragically ended her sister Nicole’s life, that September 26th day, still traumatizes every member of her family and she asks for your support to stop her sister’s murderer from going free with his crime. Letters promoting Justice for Nicole by protesting the release of her offender can be sent to: andreahenning@me.com. These letters may be addressed to “Parole Board Members of Prisoner #309305”.

“Physical abuse is any intentional, unwanted contact with you or something close to your body, or any behavior that causes or has the intention of causing you injury, disability, or death.”

Social Media is one of those spaces where vulnerability can be a challenge. Some of us are quick to share our vacation pictures and start a discussion about them on Facebook but find it very hard to share our struggles or even our new business. We do our best to carefully curate our persona so that we fit in. And because we are not a celebrity sharing their diagnosis or loss, we think no one will care about our own.

This episode helps us see that every time we truly show up, we are vulnerable. It also encourages us to be vulnerable anyway because that’s when we know that we are not alone and that’s also when we remind others that they’re not alone.

In this Women's History Month, I identify a stumbling block that stops many of us from stepping up to share our goodness with the world. Using lessons from the Japanese art form of Kintsugi, I encourage my sisters to recognize the beauty that lies within our imperfections.

This episode reminds us that whether positive or negative, we have to agree with our critics and cheerleaders for their words to make impact. It is also a reminder for us to choose the role we will play in the lives of our fellow women, will we be their uppers or downers?

It’s Black History Month and on this episode, I will be sharing a bit of my experience as a Black person living in Canada. I talk about some of the challenges I’ve had and also the role of allies in stemming the tide of anti-Black racism that seems to be entrenched in our systems and interactions. I’ve faced walls of silence and awkward questions, but I’ve also encountered wonderful support from White allies and indigenous Blacks. Yes, there’s been sadness but there’s also been the joy of experiencing the goodness of humans, both Black and White.

This episode is an encouragement to my Black sisters to keep showing up despite the hard road we journey, and to my White sisters to keep walking alongside us as we navigate the minefields of racism.

Check the references in the episode transcript to see some of the research on systemic racism in Canada and its impact on child welfare reporting and the education of Black children, especially boys.

Welcome to Messy Can't Stop Her with your host, Judith Kambia Obatusa - JKO.

My life has been a journey of many valleys but I've always been able to climb out of every one of them by holding onto the rope of other people's triumphs over challenges.

In Episode 1 of the Messy Can’t Stop Her Podcast, I share my reason for starting this podcast. I start with the story of a Master's degree and what I learnt from the challenges I faced during and after.
The idea is to encourage and build a community of support around women who are in difficult life situations by sharing other women's stories of resilience so that they too can climb out of the valleys of life in which they find themselves.

My hope is that this podcast will empower every woman that listens, to reach for more even when life's challenges threaten to become overwhelming.
