While there might not be direct evidence for the effectiveness of the approaches we discuss, I believe that there is no one-size(therapy)-fits-all in recovery and these approaches/modalities can support recovery for some people.

Sophia Purcell hassuffered with anorexia nervosa since her late teens, but wasn’t officially diagnosed until the summer of 2017, more than a decade into the eating disorder. She also has a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, a congenital condition that affects movement, coordination, balance and muscle strength, flexibility and tone.
At present, there’s not much research into the relationship between eating disorders and disabilities. As someone with first-hand experience of both, she wants to do whatever she can to raise awareness, encourage others to seek support, and hopefully make treatment more inclusive and accessible.
We discuss-
How having Cerebal Palsy affected her self-esteem growing up and contributed to the development of an eating disorder
Sophia's experience in an inpatient unit and how it effected her cerebral palsy
Things she wished she had known before going into treatment for her eating disorder
Opinions on how individuals with a co-existing physical condition or emotional needs can advocate for themselves when undergoing treatment
How treatment models could become more inclusive for people with additional needs and physical conditions

In this bite-sized episode Dr Rachel Evans answers a listeners question about closing the gap between knowing what to do for recovery and then actually following through and doing it, with the example of eating regularly.
We start with a very brief overview of health behaviour change research and the knowledge-behaviour gap, which Rachel studied for her PhD, before moving onto what you can do at an individual level to help yourself make positive changes to your behaviour.

Part 2 with Emma Green. We round up Emma's story (carrying on from part 1/Ep 8) and discuss if it's healthy to be vegan (i.e., not eating meat, fish, eggs, dairy, honey) during eating disorder recovery. Emma took the decision to cut out animal products (including in make-up, clothes etc) during her recovery and is still vegan today, where-as I was vegan for a while, but have gone back to eating some animal products!
This episode has some great questions to ask yourself surrounding your reasons for cutting out animal products and how to eat in a way that supports your mental and physical health.

This episode is for information only. It is NOT intended for diagnosis of an eating disorder. Please be aware that often there is a grey area between what is a 'healthy' behaviour and what is 'unhealthy' because of the amount of mental time and energy the behaviour takes. Also, there are other indictors of disordered eating not covered in this episode.
If you think that yourself or a loved one has an eating disorder, then please contact your GP or a suitably qualified professional.
