Safeguarding The Gospel
Acts 18-19
As its missionary efforts continued, the church sought to protect its doctrine and demonstrate the power of the gospel through righteous living so that others might trust in Christ.
When Paul arrived in Ephesus on his third missionary journey, he encountered people with various understandings of salvation. Paul faithfully shared the gospel with all he met and persevered, resulting in many trusting in Jesus and experiencing changed lives. Paul's faithful perseverance testified to Jesus, who faithfully endured to bring salvation to the world.
Because Christ endured suffering and death for our salvation, we persevere in sharing the gospel with others while praying they will trust in Jesus and experience transformation.
Explaining the Gospel
Acts 17
When Paul encountered opposition on his second missionary journey, he did not allow it to stop the spread of the gospel but rather found new opportunities to proclaim the risen Christ.
When Paul saw an altar to an unknown god in Athens, he used it to proclaim the one true God to those who were listening. Jesus came to earth so that we might come to know God through Him, the perfect representation of God, being Himself.
Because we have come to know God through Jesus, we look in our culture for ways that we might be able to point others to the gospel so that they too might move from ignorance and disbelief to knowledge and faith in Christ.
Prioritizing the Gospel
Acts 15
When questions arose about the gospel, the early church gathered to clarify that justification is through faith alone, affirming a core doctrine that unites all of God's people.
The Jerusalem Council met to resolve a dispute in the early church: was faith in Christ sufficient for justification and inclusion into God's people? The early church's response affirmed the sufficiency of faith in Jesus for justification. Because of His finished work on the cross, Jesus alone is all we need to be saved.
Because we have been saved by grace through faith and not by works, we proclaim the gospel message to everyone that justification is available through faith in Christ alone.
A Reconciling Gospel
Philemon 1
2 Corinthians 5
Paul pleaded for Philemon to be reconciled with Onesimus, modeling the reconciliation Christ has extended to us.
When Paul appealed to Philemon on behalf of the runaway slave Onesimus, he placed himself in the middle of their broken relationship. To make peace, Paul volunteered to pay Onesimus's debt. Through this action, Paul modeled Jesus Christ, who is the peacemaker between God and sinful humanity. By paying our debt, Jesus reconciled us to God and to each other.
Because we have been given limitless grace through Jesus Christ, we live as agents of reconciliation who reflect the heart of our crucified Savior to others.
A Sent Messenger
Acts 13014
The early church followed the Lord's leading to proclaim the gospel wherever He sent them, beginning a missionary movement that has not ceased.
Jesus told His disciples that the gates of Hell would not prevail against His church, reminding us that God's people are "on offense", continuing the mission Jesus began. God's plan is for missionaries to take the powerful and good news of Jesus to places of deep spiritual darkness with full confidence that Jesus will build His church.
Because God sent Jesus to us to provide our salvation, we send, support, and consider being missionaries to serve those who have never heard the gospel.
A Transformed Murderer
Acts 9
In Saul's conversion, we see an example of the grace of God and the power of the gospel, which is able to transform even the most hostile opponents of Jesus.
The conversion and calling of Saul is a demonstration of God's power to save. Through an encounter with the crucified and risen Jesus, this once-hardened persecutor of God's people began his journey to becoming perhaps the greatest missionary the world has ever known. Only the gospel can transform a public opponent of Christ into a fervent witness to His salvation.
Because we are estranged from God but are now God's children through Jesus, we pray for Salvation of others with full confidence that God can transform even the hardest heart.
United in the Gospel
1 Corinthians 1; 12
The church is one body, joined together by Christ and His gospel.
Christ's desire is for His church to be united as one to fulfill our mission and reflect the oneness of our trinitarian God. Just as the Father, Son, and Spirit have carried out the plan of redemption in unity, so too is the church to be unified as we carry out God's plan of evangelism and missions.
Because Jesus has joined all who trust in Him together as one church, we cast aside all causes of division and fight to preserve unity to show the watching world God's power to reconcile.
Imprisoned for the Gospel
Acts 12
God responded to the church's prayers and delivered Peter from prison.
When Peter was arrested and put in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. God delivered Peter miraculously, but the church failed to believe he had been rescued at first. In a similar way, Jesus had taught His disciples that He would die and be raised again, but they too failed to believe at first. When they saw and experienced the resurrected Savior, their faith increased.
Because God's love, power and sovereignty are proven, in the resurrection of Jesus, we pray with anticipation that God works in us and through us as we seek to make Jesus known.
Welcomed by the Gospel
God confirmed that salvation had come to the Gentiles through the giving of the Holy Spirit who unites all who believe.
Peter learned that God does not show favoritism but calls His people to proclaim the message of Jesus's death and resurrection to all people, to celebrate His work in their lives, and to welcome believers into His family, regardless of their ethnicity.
Because we have been saved by your grace through faith in Jesus, we are not to show favoritism as we share the gospel, but are to extend the call of salvation to all people with equal concern, urgency and joy.
Convicted By The Gospel
Acts 10
Through Peter's vision and the Lord's calling to meet with Cornelius, God revealed that the gospel is for all people.
Through a vision given by God, Peter came to understand that Jesus was the Savior of all people -Jews and Gentiles alike. Anyone who trusts in Jesus is no longer unclean because of sin but rather has been cleansed from all unrighteousness and is now part of the one family of God.
Because Christ's work has cleanses the sin of all who believe, we forgive one another of any wrongdoing and stand together in unity to show the world God's power to change people.
Changed by the Gospel
Acts 9
The miracles of Peter were done in the name of Jesus Christ so that people would believe in Jesus for salvation.
The miracles that Peter performed were done by the power of the Holy Spirit and resulting in people turning to the Lord for salvation, echoing the earthly ministry of Jesus. During His time on earth, Jesus performed many miracles to reveal that He is the Son of God, culminating in the miracle of the resurrection, which confirmed that salvation had come.
Because we have experienced the great miracle of our salvation through Jesus, we proclaim Christ to the nations with boldness and joy so that others might come to trust in the Lord.
The Humble Savior
Philippians 2
Hebrews 4:2
2 Corinthians 5
The Son of God provided salvation through humiliation on earth.
Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself by taking on flesh and living on the earth amongst His creation. Although He was without sin, Jesus gave up His life on the cross, paying the sin penalty owed by others. Jesus rose from the dead in victory. All who trust in Jesus are forgiven of their sin and are credited with his righteousness so that they too bring glory to the Father.
Because Jesus secured our salvation through His humiliation on earth, we humble ourselves always seeking to put God's plan and the needs of others about our own.
The Scattered Church
Acts 8
Persecution did not stifle the gospel but rather served to spread the gospel as the church advanced its mission of proclaiming the gospel to all people.
Persecution led to the scattering of the church and the gospel going forward. Philip encountered an Ethiopian Eunuch who was familiar with the Old Testament prophets but was unable to understand how their message was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Phillip, led by the Spirit, helped the eunuch understand how Jesus fulfilled Scripture by dying on the cross for our sins and rising from the dead.
Because we have received new life in Christ and have committed to following Him, we seek to be available and obedient to the Spirit's prompting, able and willing to show Christ in all the Scriptures.
The Murdered Servant
Acts 6-7
Stephen preached the gospel with wisdom and boldness and was faithful to Jesus even at the cost of his life.
In his death as the first Christian martyr, Stephen followed in the footsteps of his Savior. Both Jesus and Stephen were falsely accused and charged with blasphemy. Both prayed for their executioners. And both entrusted their spirits to God as they died. As a follower of Jesus Christ, Stephen reflected his Master in life and in death.
Because we have been saved through the sacrifice and death of Jesus, we bear witness to His great glory, even when we are maligned or persecuted for our faith.
The Divided Believers
Acts 6
When strife threatened the early church, the church acted quickly and selected additional servants to preserve unity.
When division and strife threatened to fracture the early church, its leaders stepped in and developed a plan to preserve its unity. Sin separated people from God and one another, but God sent Jesus to step in and fulfill His plan to bring people together with Him and one another. All who trust Jesus -from every tongue, tribe, and nation -are united as one people, the bride of Christ.
Because Jesus has provided salvation for all peoples, we cast aside every cause for division within the church and strive to live as one.
The Opposed Apostles
Acts 5
Jesus had instructed His disciples to preach about Him, a mission they strove to be faithful to even when their lives were in peril.
Jesus had instructed His followers to be witnesses of the salvation from sin that can be found in Him alone. But Jesus never promised it would be easy; just as Christ experienced rejection and suffering, so will His followers. Suffering for Christ is cause not for despair but rather for joy, knowing that God uses our sufferings, like Christ's, for His glory.
Because Jesus suffered on our behalf, we seek to stand firm for the cause of the gospel in the midst of suffering, praying that God might use all of our adversity to bring glory to Himself.
The Church Preaches The Gospel
Matthew 9-10
Romans 10
God has sent His people into the world to tell others about Christ.
Just as Jesus came into the world so that people might come to have saving faith in Him, the church has been sent throughout the world to proclaim salvation that can only be found in Jesus Christ.
Because we have come to know Jesus at least in part through the faithful evangelism of others, we embrace the duty and privilege of making Jesus known to the nations.
The Source of Hope
The events after the resurrection of Jesus Christ provide the only true source of hope in this world.
The Church Works Together
Acts 4-5
God judged Ananias and Sapphira for lying about the gift they gave, protecting the purity of the early church.
Ananias and Sapphira's deceptive action was a sin and came not from a heart of generosity but from a heart of greed. Followers of Jesus share their resources and give generously to those in need, following the example of Jesus who gave up heavenly riches to share His inheritance with all who trust in Him.
Because God has lavished us with riches of salvation and new life in Christ, we should live in unity, being generous and honest as we reflect Christ's truth and love.
The Church Stands Firm
Acts 4
When Peter and John were arrested and warned not to preach Jesus, they responded that they could not stop proclaiming the risen Savior.
Although they were warned to stop preaching Jesus, Peter and John responded that they could not keep silent about their experiences with the risen Savior. The gospel is great news that must be shared by those who have come to believe in Jesus Christ.
Because we have experienced the great news of salvation through Jesus, we seek to tell all others about how they too can believe in Jesus and be forgiven of their sin.
The Church Meets Needs
In healing the man who was lame, Peter and John displayed God's power to him and all those around and pointed to a greater, spiritual healing found in Christ.
Once the Holy Spirit was given, the disciples began boldly proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit displayed the power of God's kingdom through the miracles the disciples performed in Jesus's name for His glory and praise.
Because we have experienced the miracle of our salvation from sin and new life in Jesus, we boldly and graciously proclaim the gospel and minister to those in need.
The Church Grows
Acts 2
Both the bold preaching of Peter and the large number of people who trusted in Christ reveal the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of people.
Peter's sermon at Pentecost, a mere fifty days after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, demonstrates the Holy Spirit's power to change those who trust in Jesus. The power of the gospel changed Peter, whom God used to preach Jesus to the crowd so that thousands would believe and be changed as well. All who believe in Jesus are changed, never to be the same.
Because we are a new creation in Christ, we seek to live according to our new identity as we put our old selves to death day by day.
The Spirit Empowers
John 16; Romans 8; 1 Corinthians 2
The Holy Spirit begins the work of salvation through the ministry of conviction and then continues by guiding the person toward truth and leading those who trust in Christ.
After Jesus completed His work of paying for sin on the cross, He returned to be with the Father but sent the Holy Spirit. The Spirit then continues ministering to the believer by leading them and attesting to their newfound life through Jesus.
Because we have been saved by God, we seek to fulfill our mission of sharing the gospel and trusting not in our own power, but in the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit to change lives.
The Spirit Enables
The disciples obeyed Jesus and waited for the Holy Spirit to come as promised, an arrival that was marked by great power from God.
Jesus had instructed His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit because He would empower them to be His witnesses on earth. As promised, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, filled them and empowered them to complete the mission they had been given. God gives the Holy Spirit to all who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior, and the Spirit changes us to be more like Jesus.
Because the Holy Spirit changes us to be more like Christ each day, we rely on the Holy Spirit as we share the gospel, call people to repentance and faith, and live in community.
The Waiting Commences
Acts 1
The disciples chose Matthias to replace Judas in accordance with the Scriptures and God's leading.
As the disciples waited for the coming of the Holy Spirit, they chose Matthias to replace Judas and join then as witnesses of the resurrection. Belief in the resurrection of Christ is at the center of the gospel and defines all who are disciples of Jesus.
Because we believe that Jesus has risen from the dead, we unite with all who likewise believe in Jesus and live on mission together declaring the risen Lord.
The Commission Received
Acts 1
Jesus's disciples were to carry out their mission of telling the world about Him, a mission they could only fulfill through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Before Jesus ascended to the Father. He commissioned His disciples to go into the world and make disciples of all nations. Under the authority of Jesus, and with the power of the Holy Spirit, we make disciples of all people as we anticipate the return of Christ.
Christmas Special
Luke 2
My family celebrated my father's birthday December 24 each year and later in the evening we would gather around and he would read the story of the birth of Christ from the Bible. Then we would all open our gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ after we had celebrated my father's birth earlier in the evening.
I pray that you find the true joy of Christmas this year!
Merry Christmas!
God made the perfect way to be with His people though Christ Jesus.
God is immanent, meaning that although He is distinct from His creation, He is also personable and involved within it. Of the many ways that God demonstrates His immanence, the greater is through the earthly ministry of Jesus. Jesus came from above, lived a perfect life, gave up His life on the cross, and rose from the dead so that all who trust in Him might have a personal relationship with God.
Because God has made the way to be in relationship with Him through Jesus, we strive to live in joyful obedience to carry the gospel to all the world so that others might come to know God too.
People Are Restored
John 21
In giving Peter the opportunity to confess his love three times, Jesus demonstrated His forgiveness and desire to restore fellowship with His own.
During Jesus's trail, Peter denied knowing Him three times. After Jesus was resurrected, He gave Peter the opportunity to declare his love of Him three times, confirming to the disciple that their relationship had been restored. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus restores the relationship between God and all who believe in Him.
Because Christ has restored our relationship with God, we seek to live as God's agents of reconciliation, pointing others to how they too can be made right with God through Jesus.
Doubts Are Overcome
John 20
While all are invited to believe in Jesus, not all are willing to place their faith in Jesus so that they might be saved.
The resurrection of Jesus can be supported with evidence, ultimately, belief in the gospel comes by faith. All who place their trust in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus by faith are blessed with eternal life.
Because we have experienced the blessings of following Jesus, we proclaim Him to others, calling on them to place their faith in Him for salvation as well.
In Appearing to His followers, the risen Jesus gave them and all who believe peace, hope and confidence.
After His death and resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples to confirm that He was alive and had defeated sin and death. All that the Scriptures had told about the Messiah was or will be fulfilled in Jesus.
Because what the Scriptures teach about Jesus is trustworthy, we preach Jesus with complete confidence and unwavering boldness.
Jesus fulfills the office of king, ruling over all of creation and guiding and directing His people, the church.
In the Old Testament, when God's people demanded a king like nations around them, God warned them but gave into their demands. All of the kings of Israel failed to lead the people as they needed. Jesus is the King of kings, the One who rules perfectly over His people. One day King Jesus is returning for His church and to establish His perfect, eternal kingdom.
Because Jesus is our King we seek to submit to His perfect leadership in all areas of our lives, knowing all He does for God's glory and our good.
Jesus' resurrection from the dead on the third day is the linchpin of the Christian faith and is news to be shared with the world.
On Easter Sunday, God vindicated His Son's perfect sacrifice by raising Him from the dead. Through faith, we are united to Christ and share in the promise of being resurrected in His likeness. Sin's curse has been removed, death has been defeated, and we are assured of everlasting life with God.
The Crucified King
Luke 23
Jesus gave up His life to provide salvation to all who repent of their sin.
Jesus willingly took up His cross and suffered the judgement our sins deserve. At the moment He died, the curtain in the temple sanctuary was torn in two, signifying that sinners have access to God through the blood of Christ. The crucifixion of Jesus is the center of history, revealing God's holiness and justice, our sinfulness and unrighteousness, and Christ's humility and love.
Because Jesus died in our place to pay for our sins, we not only proclaim to the world that Jesus died on the cross but also why He died.
The Accused King
Luke 22-23
Jesus was arrested, tried, and condemned to die, even though He did no wrong.
In this Jesus became the perfect substitute for us, bearing our sins on the cross to provide forgiveness. All who have trusted in Christ are no longer under condemnation but have been declared righteous by God.
Because we have been forgiven of our sin, we cast aside guilt and shame when we sin and instead repent with assurance that we are always loved and accepted by God.
The Interceding Priest
Hebrews 4-10
Jesus fulfills the office of priest, interceding on behalf of people and by becoming the sacrifice necessary to purify them of their sin.
In the Old Testament, God established a priesthood among His people. The Priest's role was to intercede on behalf of the people and perform regular animal sacrifices to purify their sins. Jesus is the perfect Priest, the High Priest who interceded on behalf of the people by laying down His life to be a once-and-for-all sacrifice for sin.
Because Jesus interceded on our behalf before the Father, we seek to intercede on the behalf of others for their salvation as we tell them how they can be forgiven of their sins through Christ.
The Betrayed Priest
Matthew 26
Even Jesus was betrayed and arrested, He did not waver in His obedience to the Father and continued to trust in His plan to provide salvation.
In the garden of Eden, Adam failed to resist the serpent and instead chose to follow His way over God's, In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus the last Adam, submitted to His Father's plan. When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for sin that we all deserve as those born to the likeness of Adam.
Because we have been saved through the sacrifice of Jesus, we embrace suffering as we follow in the footsteps of our Savior, whose mission was to seek and save the lost.
The Covenant Making Priest
Matthew 86
In the Lord's Supper, Jesus presented a picture of the sacrifice He would make on the cross and also affirmed that He would be victorious: His kingdom would not fail.
After God made a covenant with Israel and sealed it through sacrifices, the people of God broke the covenant, worshiping false gods. God promised to enact a new covenant in which He would forgive sins and write His law on His people's hearts. At the last supper, Jesus explained that His sacrificial death would establish this new covenant and bring forgiveness of sin.
Because we have new life through Christ, we celebrate the Lord's Supper, looking back to Christ's finished work and also looking forward to His glorious return when we celebrate it with Him.
The Annointed Priest
John 12
Those who follow Jesus are called to sacrifice in order to show His worth, prioritizing Him alone all as they point others to Him.
When Mary anointed the feet of Jesus, she demonstrated that she was willing to sacrifice greatly because she treasured Him more than anything else. A short time after thus, Jesus would sacrifice Himself on the cross so that we might be forgiven of sin and be made right with God.
Because Jesus is our greatest treasure, we live with open hands, willing to sacrifice everything to make Him known to the nations.
The True Prophet
Deuteronomy 16
Mark 1
John 6:14
Jesus fulfills the office of prophet, declaring words of eternal life to the world. In the Old Testament, God sent prophets to the people to share His words. Jesus, the Word of God, is the ultimate Prophet, sharing words of eternal life found through faith in Him.
Because Jesus came to us sharing words of eternal life found in Him, we share the good news of Jesus with all those around us, always open to follow God's leading to go anywhere to proclaim the gospel.
Followers of Jesus are to live expectantly, faithfully, and compassionately as they await His return and His coming kingdom.
Jesus promised that one day He will return to usher in the fullness of God's kingdom. Until that day, Jesus instructed His followers to make the most of their time, living as His ambassadors, telling others how they too can be part of the coming kingdom.
Because we have come to know the exceeding value of God's kingdom, we urgently proclaim the gospel to the world so that others might be brought into the kingdom as well.
Because we have come to know the exceeding value of God's kingdom, we urgently proclaim the gospel to the world so that others might be brought into the kingdom as well.
Matthew 23
Jesus denounces religion that does not express the heart of God. Jesus denounced the religious leaders for practicing heartless religion and for believing that their external conduct made them right with God. When we trust in Jesus, we are made right with God, and He changes our hearts so that we can love and obey Him.
Because we now, in Christ, have the capacity to love God, we seek to demonstrate our love for Him through obedience, demonstrating true religion before a watching world.

This episode discusses the importance of responding to invitations.
Obedience
Matthew 22:19-22
This episode discusses the importance of pursuing a relationship with Jesus first and then being obedient to His commands.
In HIs responses to the challenges of the religious leaders, Jesus demonstrated His wisdom, authority and mastery of the Scripture.
The religious leaders questioned Jesus to trap Him in HIs words, but each time, Jesus answered them from the authority of God's Word, and they could not respond. Jesus is the Word of God who came to reveal God perfectly to us. He has all authority in heaven and on earth.
Because we have experienced God's kindness to us in salvation through Jesus, we live under the Word of God's authority in all areas of our lives with gratitude and joy.

The Celebrated Prophet

Jesus's entry into Jerusalem further revealed that He is the Messiah, the true King of Israel worthy of the people's praise.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, He fulfilled Old Testament prophecies about the coming Messiah and proclaimed He is the One who fulfilled them. The people praised Jesus but for the wrong reasons, thinking He had come to free them from Rome. Jesus did not come to free people from the tyranny of a worldly power but rather from the power of sin and death.
Because we know Jesus as our Savior, we put away hypocritical and hollow worship and exalt Him for who He truly is -the Son of God who came to take away the sins of the world.

Believers are to have nothing to do with the evil powers of the world and their fruit hope in the things of the world while also opposing God through the world's evil systems. Jesus came so that the eyes of the blind might be opened to the truth. All who trust in Him find true hope in God's kingdom.

While all may come to Jesus in faith for salvation, many will not, choosing to trust in some other way to be saved. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. Because the way of salvation is narrow, we keep Jesus central in all we do, helping others fix their gaze on Him and trust in Him alone for salvation.

As such, the church's mission is to proclaim salvation through Christ to the world so that others might be part of the coming kingdom as well. The Pharisees and scribes criticized Jesus for welcoming sinners and dining with them. In response, Jesus told three stories depicting God's heart to search after the lost. Heaven rejoices over all sinners who repent and trust in Jesus, the Savior, who came to seek and save the lost. Because we have been forgiven of our sin through Jesus, we celebrate the Father's goodness in welcoming home any repetant sinner.

Disciples Live for God's Glory
Matthew 6
The actions of those who follow Jesus are done not for their own notoriety but rather so that they might grow in their faith and please the Father. Jesus warned His disciples not to act for their own glory or seek reward from others. Rather when they seek God's glory, they will receive reward from Him. Jesus demonstrated this truth when He took on flesh, suffered and died on the cross. Through Jesus's humble obedience, the Father has been glorified, and He was rewarded for His faithfulness.
Because we have come to recognize the world's rewards as fleeting and unfulfilling, we seek to live each day in view of eternity, joyfully sacrificing what is temporary for that which is eternal.

We are to confess our sin so that we might be restored with God. Nehemiah confessed the sins of God's people, trusting the Lord to respond according to His righteousness and faithfulness. Instead, God brought salvation to His people through Esther, who interceded for them at great risk to her own life. God would provide a greater salvation, one from sin and death, through Jesus, who interceded for us and laid down His life on our behalf.
