According to a Swedish study, 1 in 5 teenagers who have impaired hearing are bullied. Whereas in comparison, those who have normal hearing are reported being bullied 1 in 10. I see deafness as a disability that is under represented. If deaf kids and adults can learn about the hearing world then I think it is only fair that the hearing world learns more about the deaf world and community.
We speak to Mickey Carolan, who was a hearing child of two deaf parents growing up. He is an author of the Deaf Kids Can series and has programs to help raise awareness so children and adults have access to communities, schools and employment that embrace their strengths, and supports their ability to be successful. According to the NIH research has shown that one in every five people have dyslexia. That’s 20% of people. They break down that data as 1-2 students in every class can have Dyslexia annually. Andee is a mother of 6 children who refers to herself as a reformed yeller. The self proclaimed, “poor farm boy” Rich Grogan found at an early age that he was different than the other kids around him. He realized that he was the one who was different. Rich navigated through being different and feeling that he needed to prove himself to the world. He says that bullying is a behavior. It is not the person. When students have positive experiences, the outcomes can be many. Such outcomes can be the development of positive self–concepts and an increase of confidence in one’s own abilities. However, when children have repeated negative experiences they can contribute to their inability to be resilient and decrease their confidence in their own skills and abilities. When we explicitly teach students toward their executive functioning skills, they are able to generalize information and strategies learned in their related service sessions such as speech, occupational therapy, counseling etc. as well as in the classroom. When each professional works toward reinforcing the skills learned in each academic setting the needs of the whole child are being met. Proactively build resiliency to avoid mental health concerns such as feeling anxious due to the evidence of repeated failure. The way in which we teach children can support different outcomes. By 8-9 years old, Dr. Shirag Shemmassian developed facial and vocal tics. He was later diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome and knew he had involuntary tics but was unable to stop them. Dr. Shemmassian attended an all Armenian private school where there was no understanding of what Tourette’s syndrome was. His parents would tell him to just stop making the tics. Are SAT and ACT exams truly optional when applying to colleges? Dr. Kelly Frindell owner of In-House Test Prep says that the data is beginning to show that “yes” submitting scores is important to the application process. Dr. Frindell reports that the percentage of students who were admitted into colleges and had submitted their test scores had significantly higher rates than those who had not. She recommends seeking test prep services sophomore year or the summer before junior year but not before. Sara Glendenning failed third grade because she was reading on the kindergarten level and the struggle was too big for her to overcome at the time. Sara has a visual perceptual disorder which made it very difficult for her to recognize letters including differentiating if they were uppercase or lowercase. In kindergarten, Sara thought the only thing she could do was to cheat on her alphabet test. Together, we discuss specific strategies particularly those based in communication and positive mindset to students who have a visual perceptual disorder. Dr. Volpe asks, “Have you ever forgotten why you walked into a room?” The answer is probably yes. I know, I have forgotten more times than I would prefer to admit. Dr. Volpe encourages people to be compassionate as individuals with ADHD forget probably 100 times more than our once in a while forgetfulness. So many children with ADHD feel like the whole world is against them and that expectations are too high for them to reach. It is a neurodevelopmental condition which is considered to be a mental health disorder. Something many people don’t realize. Who was once known as “Parker‘s Mom“ is now known as “Val.“ Sixteen years ago Valerie Colavecchio gave birth to a baby boy named Parker. To Valerie‘s surprise her baby was born with a genetic disorder leaving him visually impaired. In later years to come, Parker was diagnosed with Autism. Similar to other parents of children with special needs, Valerie needed to find a way to help her son and learn how to live a life outside of being a mother.

Meet Gianna! A Tourette syndrome ambassador. Gianna shares with us what it feels like to have Tourette’s Syndrome and what has motivated her to become an ambassador. From being diagnosed at the age of 8 and now 19, Gianna tells you what it feels like to be pulled out of class for support services and what it was like to be the last student to complete classwork. Gianna explains the subtle and not-so-subtle signs of Tourette’s Syndrome and the best approaches for educators to be proactive when educating a student with Tourette’s.
Music has helped Gianna throughout her journey of life as a person and a student. She looks to help children find comfort through music just like she has. When is the time to call a neuropsychologist and what exactly is it that they do? Dr. Lindsay Plunkett, PhD helps to pave the way for educators and parents who know that their students’ grades are too high to receive services but they are in need of help.
