And, yes, I am well aware that there were nine fatalities. That these people all lived their own distinct lives. But, to be frank, the information present would be redundant. There are only so many things that can happen to the human body from a helicopter.

With this episode of Disaster, I want to focus on the flight itself. The crash. And the immediate, devastating aftermath. Please note: I will not be covering the police taking pictures of the bodies and the subsequent court case. The crew were working a bridge rehabilitation project. The bridge itself was incomplete. Water Barrels were used to form guard rails. One car veered and knocked several barrels off the side of the bridge. Loren Schauers was tasked to fix the problem. He was asked to operate a forklift to bring the barrels back on the bridge. This was something Schauers wasn't trained to do.

The subject of today’s episode is a 26-year-old man named River Steven Rosenquist. He worked at the Naples Zoo in Florida. He was hired to clean gift shops and restrooms. River didn’t work directly for the zoo. He worked for a third-party cleaning party. According to later reports he smelled of alcohol. That evening River chose to climb over a safety enclosure. The enclosure covered with signs warning against this exact act. It’s then that River allegedly stuck his arm through a fence that held a tiger. Eko, the eight years old Malayan tiger, did what tigers do.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a fighter. My friends and were involved in school wrestling. We took local boxing classes. And Like fools we had makeshift local boxing tournament There were times when we nearly knocked each other out. I’ve found years later that others shared this experience. Looking back… I wish I’d learned a language. Maybe focused on my fitness. Instead, I probably earned myself some C.T.E. It’s interesting to find that this sort of dangerous competition still goes on. That young people are still finding that not so great outlet. November, 20th, 2021, the University of Nevada Las Vegas hosted a boxing event at the held at the Sahara Event Center. The Fight Night featured untrained student boxers. What happened next was a tragedy and disaster.

Up until the late 1990s, the internet was somewhat uncharted territory for many people and the landscape was very different back then. Twitter, Facebook, and even MySpace were things that had not been invented yet. Social media simply didn't exist the way that it does today and what modes of communication did exist took a small amount of technical knowledge. Private email groups and local BBS message boards were still the primary mode of communication by the time a service known as Usenet began to gain popularity. These newsgroups made it simple for the public to create an alias and post a public discussion; not unlike a primitive, stripped-down version of Reddit. And much like the early days of Reddit, topical groups available through the service ranged from the ordinary to shocking levels of depravity.

There were no videos, gifs, or emojis as we see today as part of chat apps. This archaic online world was all ASCII and imagination, but for someone like Sharon Lopatka the online world was one of adventure and excitement. A world that she believed would fulfill all of her deepest desires, and one that ultimately lead her down a path of darkness.

Isolated incidents of coerced suicide are distressing to think about but with the growing popularity of social media sites it would seem there may be some people who want to play a deadly game. Sometime in 2013, rumors about a deadly suicide game began making their way across social media sites. VK, a Russian version of Facebook, seemed to be the source of the phenomenon, but like many creepy pastas, the game's true origins are muddy at best. What is well documented is the moral panic that began to spread through Russian tabloids about a game, known to teens as the Blue Whale Challenge, that some sources claimed had been responsible for a vast majority of the 130 suicides that occurred in Russia in 2016.

According to TC Palm, “from 1948 to 2021, 442 unprovoked bite incidents have occurred in Florida. 26 of the bites resulted in people being killed by wild alligators. A total of 303 people have received major injuries. 139 have received minor injuries over the same time period.”

These attacks are increasing in number, rising from an average of just one every 3 years between 1988 and 1999 to about 7 per year between the years 2000 and 2016.

I lived in Florida for years. I don’t think some people fully understood how dangerous swimming in fresh water can be. I find it interesting we live in a world where we overstate the dangerousness of sharks while downplaying the danger of alligators.

It was believed that an accident like Chernobyl couldn’t happen in Japan. While the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, did not believe an event like Chernobyl could happen at one of their power plants, the earthquake and tsunami were greater than anyone expected them to be. However, even before that natural disaster, there had been warning signs of what could come.

Thirteen years before the disaster, a TEPCO employee noted a crack along one of the reactors at Fukushima. When reported, TEPCO attempted to conceal the evidence. However, when the employee reported his findings to the government, who ordered TEPCO to correct the issue. Instead, the employee was fired.

Tokyo is the largest city and capital of Japan. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. From the small fishing village of Edo to the capital of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603, by the 19th century, Edo was the largest city in the world with a population exceeding one million.

Under the Meiji Restoration, in 1868, Tokyo was given the name it has today and became the imperial capital of Japan.

Although not the subject of today’s podcast, Tokyo has gone through plenty of disasters, both natural and manmade. In 1923, a massive earthquake shook the region and destroyed most of the city—killing at least one hundred thousand people. However, within seven years, the city had mostly been rebuilt only to be devastated again by the US bombings in World War II.

Japan is a country of resilience, as is its capital.

Even so, the tragedies to come is what no one was prepared for.

A white stretch limo is usually something that marks happiness. A prom. A bachelorette party. In this case celebrating a wedding. According to CNN, “Nine Passengers were traveling in the Lincoln as it headed across the San Francisco Bay along the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge that Saturday night.” Things seemed fine at first. No signs of trouble. At one point one of the women riding in the limousine knocks on the limousine driver's window and he can make out that she said the word, “smoke”. He assumes she’s asking to bum a cigarette. He informs her he doesn’t have any. But the woman wasn’t asking for a cigarette. The limo was on fire.

The 21st October 1966 dawned misty and grey in the Welsh mining town of Aberfan, with fog blanketing the village. The 240 students of Pantglas Junior School were looking forward to their half term break. At an assembly later that morning, they would sing the hymn ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ for their teachers before school would be dismissed at midday. Ahead of them was a week off. The children were looking forward to getting outside for hours of playtime with their friends. That morning, 8-year-old Pantglas student Jeff Edwards walked to school with his best friend Robert Jones. When the boys arrived, they hung up their coats and took their seats in the classroom. It was a perfectly ordinary, drizzly autumn day, with everyone in the village going about their business. But what no one in Aberfan, Wales, or even the rest of Britain could anticipate, was that in less than an hour, the lives of the town’s residents would be changed forever in the most tragic - and some would later say entirely foreseeable - of circumstances.

The 2016 Great Smoky Mountains wildfires were a devastating event that affected thousands of people and left a lasting impact on the landscape of the region.

The fires began in late November and quickly spread, burning through nearly 17,000 acres of land. Over 150 homes and businesses were destroyed, and hundreds of people were forced to evacuate. The fires also caused significant damage to the area's natural resources, including the loss of over 100,000 trees.

Evacuation was mandatory for everyone in Gatlinburg, and many people fled with only the clothes on their backs. The fire so intense that it melted the asphalt on the roads. Several evacuees described the scene as like driving into hell. And, listener, we’re going to give you a firsthand look into what it’s like driving into hell before this is over.

After Tornado #5 that night changed Seth Wells life forever, another Tornado came and went, but caused little damage. At 2:05 AM in Goffton, TN Tornado #6 briefly touched down. Rated at EF-0 it caused light damage to one house.
At 2:25 AM Tornado #7 hit Rinnie, TN. Rated at EF-2 it did cause moderate damage to the area. But luckily no one was injured. No one died.

Tornado #4 isn’t much to talk of. It touched down at 1:38 AM in Buffalo Valley, TN, Putnam County. It lifted less than ten minutes later at 1:42 AM. Rated EF-0, there was some roof damage, fallen limbs, and some tipped over porta pottys.
Tornado #5 is where things got bad again. In Cookeville, TN, a Tornado rated a staggering EF -5 touched down at 1:48 AM. A tornado described as both “historic” and “violent”. The Tornado laid waste to numerous homes, businesses, and anything else in its path. Trees were pulled from their roots and scattered across the county. Cars pulled and tossed from their parking spots. This tornado caused by far the most destruction.
