Dr Lakany is a leading researcher in upper limb exoskeleton technology and a lecturer at University of Liverpool. This fast-evolving technology has the potential to significantly improve the upper-limb functionalities required for everyday activities.

Rehabilitation robots for the upper limbs have already proven their usefulness in particular for patients with spinal cord or stroke-related injuries, encouraging faster and more effective motor therapy. Dr Lakany and her team have done pioneering work to develop assistive devices for people with severe motor disabilities.

The potential of the proposed technology is huge in empowering both clinicians and patients to better manage movement impairment for people with upper limb paresis.

This session covers:

  • Why upper limb exoskeletons are less prevalent than the lower limb models and the challenges with developing this technology;
  • An exploration of who might benefit from upper limb exoskeleton technology and the level of existing function required;
  • What is available and on the UK market now and the associated costs; and
  • Long-term benefits of the technology in rehabilitation

We were delighted to welcome BBC profiled artist, polymath, short-film maker and Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research Ambassador, Davey Jose to Stewarts Soundbites.

Davey sustained a spinal cord injury when he was knocked over by a car at a little under three years old. In this very special episode, Davey discusses his experience of undertaking his formative educational years at a special school in the 1980s, his transition into mainstream education, his journey through higher education (studying Computer Science and Mathematics at Trinity College, University of Cambridge) and his keen interest in drawing and painting and how this impacted upon his life and rehabilitation.

Davey’s fascinating journey lead to his debut Living with Spinal Cord Injury exhibition in 2019, and coverage in a BBC documentary a year later. His 18 oil canvasses, based upon his own experience of spinal cord injury, were used as part of a virtual reality experience called, ‘The Cure’. The oil paintings are inspired by x-rays of spinal injuries and reinterpret iconic artworks to normalise disability.

Davey is an extraordinarily interesting and passionate speaker, who kindly agreed to join us to reflect upon his experience of the therapeutic power of art and creativity during a rehabilitation programme following catastrophic injury.

The ‘Liminal Space’ is a space in time between the familiar ‘what was’ and the uncertain ‘what’s next’. Many patients and clients who sustain serious injury find themselves in The Liminal Space: they have experienced a fundamental loss or change in their lives and have not yet accepted or adapted to the adjusted phase of their new life. This brings with it many challenges, which can often manifest in depression, hopelessness and even suicidal ideation.

Bev Palmer, a behavioural specialist at Bush & Coto, examined this topic which impacts the lives of many following serious injury.

Bev spoke to Emma Lyons about identifying clients who are living in ‘The Liminal Space’ and working with them to transition into the adjusted phase of their lives. Bev explained the importance of identifying the extent to which problems may be attributed to living in The Liminal Space, in the context of other ongoing physical, neurological, psychological and developmental processes.
