Welcome to Future Bound, a Podcast by Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC). As the world leader in combination carriers, KCC owns and operates eight CABU and eight CLEANBU combination carriers with three CABU vessels under construction for delivery in 2026. KCC’s combination carriers are built for transportation of both wet and dry bulk cargoes, being operated in trades where the vessels efficiently combine dry and wet cargoes with minimum ballast. Through their high utilization and efficiency, the vessels emit up to 40% less CO2 per transported ton compared to standard tanker and dry bulk vessels in current and targeted combination trading patterns.
The podcast will bring you episodes from the KCC team responsible for commercial, technical, and all day-to-day operations. We’ll from others in the Klaveness organization specializing in market analysis, decarbonization, and we’ll bring you discussions with industry peers and other external guests we interview along the way.

Helene Tofte is the Executive Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Climate. She has the overarching responsibility for the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association’s international engagement and climate activities, with special focus on monitoring international climate processes and our participation in the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).

“A big enough number to start conversations”
The European Union Emissions Trading System, better known as the EU ETS, is the EU’s market mechanism that applies a price to CO2 and creates incentives to reduce emissions. Established in 2005, the goal has been to reduce emissions in energy-intensive industries and from 2024, it will include emissions from shipping.
Under the scheme, all cargo vessels and passenger ships over 5,000 DWT sailing to or from EU ports, will have to surrender their emissions allowance as follows:
- 40% of their verified emissions in 2024
- 70% of their verified emissions in 2025
- 100% of verified emissions from 2026 onwards
This will include 100% of the emissions from intra-European routes and from vessels berthing within the EU, as well as 50% of extra-European routes to and from a port within the EU.
With the clock ticking, questions still linger over preparations, how the costs will be allocated, and how much the scheme will incentivize the industry. To answer these questions, Jean Sissener quizzes decarbonization guru Ingrid Kylstad of ZeroLab, with Kylstad then switching roles to probe Sissener on what steps KCC has taken for their own preparations.

“A case of seeing is believing”In April 2021 we announced KCC had concluded key strategic agreements for an energy efficiency retrofit on two of our vessels, which included the installation of an air lubrication system by Silverstream Technologies. Known as the Silverstream® System, the solution releases a carpet of microbubbles that travels the full length of the flat bottom of a vessel, reducing friction between the hull and water.
The installations are slated to be carried out on one CABU II class vessel and one CLEANBU class vessel during their next scheduled dockings during Q2 and Q3 2023.

"A case of seeing is believing"In April 2021 we announced KCC had concluded key strategic agreements for an energy efficiency retrofit on two of our vessels, which included the installation of an air lubrication system by Silverstream Technologies. Known as the Silverstream® System, the solution releases a carpet of microbubbles that travels the full length of the flat bottom of a vessel, reducing friction between the hull and water.
The installations are slated to be carried out on one CABU II class vessel and one CLEANBU class vessel during their next scheduled dockings during Q2 and Q3 2023.
In this special ‘on the road’ edition of Future Bound, Martin Wattum took the opportunity to visit Silverstream Technologies in London and sit down with CEO Noah Silberschmidt to dig into how Silverstream works and what the installation means for KCC’s vessels due to onboard the solution.

“When employing crew for these combination carriers, we can’t just shake trees and expect qualified seafarers to fall out of them” The Philippines has long been the world’s largest supplier of seafarers, serving up no shortage of talent to the pool of over 1.6 million sailors that make up the backbone of global logistics. At KCC our fleet is largely made up of its own share of dedicated Filipinos, Romanians, a minority share of other Europeans, and now, thanks to the vision of VP Maritime Personnel Torbjørn Eide, a 5% (and growing) share of South Africans.
The South African project has primarily been pioneered by Eide for the past decade, who has previously commented, “complementing the nationalities aboard our vessels is an important and valuable experience for our sailors, and we see South Africa as a well of untapped potential from a skills and people development perspective.”

"Take a ride on KCC's magic carpet" In November 2021 KCC raised $25 million exclusively dedicated to a program designed deliver significant cuts in carbon emissions across the fleet and further strengthen KCC' position as a leader in low carbon shipping.
Through the energy efficiency program, KCC’s aim is to position for a future of increasingly strict decarbonization regulations and customer requirements in the shipping industry. Several of the initiatives have already been deployed since, with others in development and others being considered for the future.

Before joining Hydro Aluminium, Myklebost was 10 years with Höegh Autoliners where his last position was Managing Director for Höegh Autoliners Shortsea Americas, based in Panama. Prior to this he was Deputy Managing Director for Euro Marine Logistics (JV between Höegh Autoliners and MOL) based in Belgium. “Safety is more than just a word” During her stint as Acting Managing Director of Klaveness Ship Management (KSM), Gudrun Helset joined CFO Liv Dyrnes in the Studio to discuss how KLASS (Klaveness Aways Safe and Secure) acts as our safety mantra and guideline in all decision making.
Safety is a priority for KCC and a quintessential part of our DNA in how we conduct all our operations. Helset highlights how this is especially of importance at KCC when considering that vessels regularly make the switch from bulk carrier to oil tanker, meaning the highest safety standards must be maintained on vessels at all times.

Gudrun Helset joined Klaveness Ship Management as Head of Strategy and Change in February 2021 prior to filling the role of Managing Director in 20222 until May 1st.
Helset has extensive background from maritime operational business improvements and organizational development and holds a MSc in Business and Administration, with a major in organizational psychology from BI the Norwegian Business School.

“We’re NEVER going to use these vessels!” On Lasse Kristoffersen’s last day as President and CEO of Torvald Klaveness and final weeks as Chairman of KCC, CEO Engebret Dahm took the opportunity to pull him into the Studio for trip down memory lane and discussion on KCC’s past, present, and future.

Lasse Kristoffersen started in Torvald Klaveness in 2007 heading up the business unit Klaveness Maritime Logistics. In September 2011 he was appointed new Chief Executive Officer for Torvald Klaveness and became the first company CEO from outside the Klaveness family.
Prior to joining Torvald Klaveness, Kristoffersen worked 11 years for Det Norske Veritas (DNV) in various positions including 2 years in New York starting up Maritime Solutions Americas for DNV. In 2006, he became Director of Operation DNV Industry Norge.
Kristoffersen stepped down as Klaveness President and CEO on 1st April 2022.
