Writer, Director & Actor Adam Lapallo is also an editor with Homes.com. Adam’s voice is distinct in his ability to tell complex yet relatable stories from dramas to horror. I have had some really awesome experiences working with him and I feel like I’ve had the opportunity to grow as an artist because of those short films we have worked on together. Adam has deep roots in Virginia, his maternal grandmother’s side of the family settled in Jamestown and there survived the “Starving Time”, his mother, Connie wrote a trilogy series on their family history that Adam has turned into a treatment for a larger project.--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loveletterstovirginia/message

Rachel Jaffe is a "coastal craftswoman based in Virginia Beach. She specializes in ceramic arts, education and is a business owner. Her clay work, including her now infamous miniature mug jewelry recently made it's debut at Arrowmont's Showcase Gallery and Supply Store in Gatlinburg, TN. Rachel grew up in Northern Virginia and her family has deep roots here, in the early 1940s, her great grandfather, Solomon Jaffe opened a meat processing plant called the Suffolk Packing Company, which her grandfather Gerald helmed for another 40 years. In her own words: "I craft functional and whimsical artwork to encourage play and conversation. My creations are intended to evoke a warm sense of home and meant to be touched, shared and cherished by all... My love for ceramics began in 2016, when my older sister, Julia, introduced me to this medium. She has always encouraged me to explore my artistic side and embrace the 3D world. As we explored and mucked around in our high school ceramics studio together, I became fascinated by the ability to shape earthen materials into lively creations. Thus began my clay journey. Much of my clay knowledge comes from, well, other clay people! I have learned so much through collaborating with other artists by sharing tools, techniques, and inspiration. I believe that art is meant to be shared and that the process of teaching and learning from others is an essential part of the creative process.Rather than pursuing a traditional academic path, I chose community studios as my learning environment. Before committing myself to ceramics, I briefly attended university in Pittsburgh, PA. Most of my time was not spent in the lecture halls. Instead, I ventured off-campus to a local community pottery studio, the Union Project, to satisfy my clay cravings. Later, I returned home to my job at Clay Cafe Studios in Falls Church, VA, where I shared my love of ceramics with elementary students. While teaching these young minds the wonders of clay, I also discovered new techniques and honed my skills as an artist. This experience served as a mutually beneficial opportunity for both myself and the children I taught. While I was accepted into art school, I ultimately decided not to attend. I chose to continue my education through more hands-on experiences. I adored teaching youth and continued my work at a local art center called River Tree Arts in Kennebunkport, ME. I had the wonderful opportunity to teach after school classes, connect with other artists, further develop my skills, and hone my personal style." "Cake4Kids Mission StatementWe bake and deliver free birthday cakes for underserved children who might not otherwise receive one.
In a world where the basics of a positive childhood are often out of reach and youth have little to call their own, the seemingly simple gift of a birthday cake can make a huge impact by raising their self-esteem and confidence.
We partner with human and social services agencies to accomplish this mission.
How Does It Work?Cake4Kids is powered by an amazing and compassionate group of volunteers who donate all the ingredients and supplies to bake cakes for the youth in their own homes and then deliver them to our partner agencies who support the youth. We have no minimum commitment — volunteers choose how often and which cakes they want to bake!
Our volunteers never meet the children we support, but every cake is custom-made for each child and an enormous amount of love is baked into each one.
We partner with agencies and organizations throughout the country who serve the youth. Our partners request a cake on behalf of the youth, and Cake4Kids volunteers deliver directly to the agencies."

"At the age of eight, Spencer Tinkham (b. 1992) discovered the exhilaration that few people achieve in a lifetime. A simple pocketknife, given to him by his grandfather, launched both his passion for creating and his future as an artist. Enthralled by the rich biodiversity that inhabited the water’s edge in Norfolk, Virginia, Spencer’s love for nature was also sparked early on. He realized that through sculpture, he could create lasting mementos of fleeting encounters. Spencer sculpted many readily available household materials- mostly soap bars and wood scraps. His tools were limited and primitive- a pocketknife, a hacksaw, and a pencil. Before Spencer graduated high school, he had already twice-won the Danner Frazer Youth Decorative Wildfowl World Championship**.
Spencer has no formal art training and is entirely self-taught. He continues to use primitive tools and mixes his oil paints from pigment powders. Most of his sculptures are still made out of found materials and are wildlife focused. Spencer’s sculptures draw influence from literature, folk art, Modern art, and contemporary art. Spencer is intrigued by the repetition of human behavior over history and uses animal sculpture to help people ponder their impact on the environment and each other.
Most recently, Spencer was inducted into the National Sculpture Society as an Associate Member. “Colaptes auratus auratus” was juried into the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson “Birds in Art 2022” museum exhibition. He has work in the Dollar Tree, Inc. corporate art collection, and has sent his sculptures to many private art collections worldwide." https://www.spencertinkhamart.com/about-spencer-tinkham.html**

At Age 13, Gayle was shocked to learn her secret century old family lineage, her aunt revealed that they are direct descendants of Thomas Jefferson. I believe that this knowledge led Gayle to the pursuit of truth in every story as a reporter on a subconscious journey of self discovery. Gayle Jessup White began her career as a Journalist with the New York Times, she has been a news anchor, a professor and is now the Public Relations & Community Engagement Officer at Monticello. Her book, Reclamation: Sally Hemings, Thomas Jefferson, and a Descendant's Search for Her Family's Lasting Legacy is a testament to acknowledge the ugly side of history, and remind folks that this really wasn't all that long ago.

As Stated on the Riehl Deal Neon Signs Co. LLC website "Riehl Deal Neon Signs Co. LLC What We Can Do Neon is a very unique process that can only be completed by hand. There are no machines capable of creating neon because it is a process that requires hand skills. A Little Bit of History and How It's Made Neon was first discovered in 1898 by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers both chemists who were pursuing their experiments to liquefy air. Through this they discovered neon and krypton, both inert gases that are used in neon signs. Morris Travers put it best saying, "the blaze of crimson light from the tube told its own story and was a sight to dwell upon and never forget." Neon is created through a process that can only be accomplished by hand. Every neon sign was created by someone who bent the glass using special tools that produced focused flames. These tools soften the glass bringing the temperature of the glass to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and are bent in accordance to a pattern. The tubes are manufactured by large companies that are able to make different colors using a powder coating inside the tubes which are made up of rare earth metals and phosphors. Some tubes are also made with colored glass to create a more saturated color. After the tubing is bent and the electrodes (these conduct the electricity through the tubing) are attached it goes through a pumping process. Using a bombarder (a machine that conducts high voltage through the tubing), a manifold, and a vacuum pump, the air is removed andthe glass and electrodes heat up taking it to a temperature that processing the electrodes and burns out impurities such as moisture. Once it cools down the tube is injected with Argon or Neon and is removed from the manifold. After this the neon can be lit using a transformer."

A true candidate for the people, Latasha Holloway is not a politician but a loving, single mother, and a superhero. She single-handedly brought justice to her child from a horrific situation that the Virginia Beach City School System grossly mishandled. Ms. Holloway is a self made woman, she is patient, tenacious, charismatic and has a deep and genuine heart. As Founder of the Virginia Beach Coalition, community, rebuilding and establishing a healthy relationship with our local government has always been at the forefront of her campaign. In her own words, directly from her site ( https://detoxvb.now.site/home ) “I’m running for Mayor because I know that the working people of Virginia Beach need opportunities for good union jobs with a living wage and benefits, affordable housing, genuine public safety, and a city where we can all belong and contribute. The American Dream is attainable through hard work and tenacity. We can uplift the City of Virginia Beach for everyone if we start with those who have been left behind. Vote Latasha Holloway for Future Mayor of Virginia. I understand that the city government has the power to change lives, uplift communities, and fix what’s broken in our city. Our city is divided, but when we all lay our heads down at night, I believe we all share the same vision for our families, our children, and our neighborhoods. To fulfill our vision for a better tomorrow, Virginia Beach deserves a mayor who will fight with all they’ve got to see the vision through. I’m ready for that fight, and as the next Mayor of the city of Virginia Beach, I’ll be a Mayor for all of us.”

Twan Wall is the artist behind the persona Bergo Husky, North Carolina and recently took Tiktok by storm with his hit song “Have a Seat”. “Bego lives in a box that me an my friends call the Bergo Box”, may be what he said at first but later Twan said that Bergo is still very much a part of him. I see the spirit of Prince in Twan, he is most comfortable in the studio and is always working on a new song. There is nothing else to say about someone who tirelessly pursues their passion but a creative genius. One can only dream to be an endless bounty of our chosen disciplines, Twan gives me hope that colorful, casual, upcycled, eccentricity is going to finally become more mainstream in the south. I know Bergo has a big heart and is ceaseless in his growth, he has what I takes not only to entertain but to be a healthy & positive leader in the LGBTQA Community.

This Episode contains adult themes and language. Gabs Presto is a creative powerhouse, she maintains a carefully curated design element in all aspects of her life. Her portfolios include extensive set, background and prop design as well as a popularly growing character portfolio. We recorded this episode while prepping and cooking for a Lumpia Party, this has become a bi annual family and close friend tradition. Just before Gabby packed up and moved across the country, we were getting into some experimental cooking, we made boozy butterscotch pear, Brie and almond Lumpia. Gabs is definitely a visual artist through and through, she taught me how to roll cosmetically perfect. September 29, 2021: Whirling fiercely in the wake of wildfires, fear-induced headlines and a pandemic in its path was the too-real tornado that struck Nashville in March 2020. Admittedly shaken up by the storm, Folk-Americana singer/songwriter Calista Garcia snapped out of fear by turning to music… specifically, “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson. As howling winds have continued over the past year, Calista has kept her calm by tapping back into this feeling through renewed awareness of the beauty that remains. On nature walks by her house, for example, she has come to notice how the canopies of leaves wave hello as she walks by; it is from this tender place, she has created a musical world to reflect what she has witnessed. Lending her lyrics now to listeners, Calista Garcia’s “A Beautiful World” EP, out October 29th, 2021, provides refuge through the power of rose-colored perspective.
“I created ‘A Beautiful World’ to be an expression of radical optimism,” Calista shares. “Optimism, not because life is full of sunshine and rainbows, but rather in spite of how tough it can be... I think holding knowledge of the bad and still believing good can prevail is the bravest thing we can do.” As she has accessed hope through songwriting, Calista has found herself writing the EP in solitude from safe places like the park benches nearby, her piano and the floor of her bedroom. Notably, the only co-write on the EP, “After You’re Gone,” came from a Zoom collaboration with Rachel Weisbart and Patrick Oberstaedt of the Gender Gnomes; speaking to the loss of family members during the pandemic, this song has already moved listeners to tears including composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa. Produced by Buddy Speir and Calista Garcia at 38 North Studio, “A Beautiful World” was engineered by Sean Russell (Damien & Stephen Marley, Allison Krauss, Bruno Mars), mixed by Grammy Award Winner Jim Scott of Plyrz Studios (The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Sting, Foo Fighters) and mastered by Grammy Award Winner Richard Dodd (Dixie Chicks, Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs). Featured musicians include Calista Garcia (vocals, acoustic, electric and resonator guitar, harmonica, Wirlitzer electric piano), Buddy Speir (acoustic & electric guitar, Wurliter electric piano, percussion), Harrison Finks (Hammond B3 organ, piano), Eric Scott (bass, backing vocals), Ben Tufts (drums, percussion), Denise Garcia (backing vocals) and Jim Scott (percussion). Without question, Calista Garcia’s fiercely-hopeful disposition has continued to propel her music career forward. In spite of its challenges, 2021 has managed to be a hallmark year as Calista was recently nominated Chris Austin Songwriting Finalist at MerleFest, playing a summer of live shows alongside Bad Cameo and as a part of Show X’s tour with The Last Real Circus. Previous releases include her critically-acclaimed debut EP “Wild Woman” (2019) which was selected in the 2020 Independent Music Awards for “Best Roots/Country EP,” recognized by the International Music Awards (IAMA), International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and the Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest (MASC). In addition, Calista Garcia’s extensive musical history includes her title as 2020’s National YoungArts Gold Winner in Voice/Singer-Songwriter, 2021 Alicia Key’s She is the Music Foundation Songwriting Fellow, 2020 Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project Fellow, 2017-18 Berklee Performance Showcase Winner, 2017 Bernard Ebbs Young Songwriter of the Year and two-time Grammy Foundation Young Songwriter Program Artist. As Calista continues to shine light onstage, tour plans continue with an upcoming show at The Birchmere alongside the renowned Rick Wakeman of “Yes” on October 24th, 2021. In Calista’s words, “My greatest wish is that this song helps you as a listener let go of your fears, and feel a little freer from your hangups. This really is a beautiful world we get to live in.” -https://www.themarketingmixtape.com/pressrelease-abeautifulworld

Brandon and Gianna Vera are the sibling duo behind the Bigi Collective. During the pandemic, the Vera’s realized that there was more to life than a nine to five and through painstaking hours of labor, dedication, bold, sweat and tears they could pursue their ambitions as artists. Their installation in the neon district by the former greyhound station was recently unveiled and they recently started performing together, BRNDNDLYN plays the piano and sings with the voice of an angel and when he hands over the mic, Gigi sings like a goddess as well. What a pleasure it’s been getting to know them and work with them. In a few weeks we will be releasing a short film collaboration called “Lil Mortitians”, I co-wrote the sketch with my brother, our sisters kids are the little stars of the short and my best friend is the Witch of Pungo and her daughter is featured as well. Maks Turner is the Podfather, Co-Creator of the Maks and Sktl Power Hour- Love Letters to Virginia is the brain child we developed together. We go way back to our days as pink cheeked Salem High School students who one day said we would be having tea with the Queen at Buckingham palace. There’s still time but I think we’d rather trash talk her with Harry and Megan somewhere by Niagara Falls. Maks is an incredibly talented artist with a diverse background in stage acting to circus performance and contortion.

Arrington Kemp is a Southeastern Virginia based Hairstylist from The D.C. Metro area. Arrington was the first and last student that I worked with as a cosmetology instructor. I had worked with students who had been in the program, Arrington was my first student that started with me and it soon became clear that I could learn more from Ms. Kemp than I could ever teach her. As a "kitchen stylist" since her teens, Ms. Kemp is an expert in protective hairstyling for natural hair, she is a self made, dedicated and passionate small business owner offering mobile styling- FIND HER @arrie.hairstylist on Instagram “Arrie’s Hair Affairs LLC” 💇🏽♀️ Tierra Miller, aka Sweet Tee IS the hype chick. Her artistic persona is uniquely angsty backed by a sugared timbre spitting lyrics as juicy as lemon pits in the bottom of your TALL GLASS OF SWEET TEE! Check out her music on Spotify and Sound Cloud! My top pick “FOREVER VIRGINIA”🎤

On July 1st, Virginia makes history as the first southern state to legalize recreational marijuana. In this episode I had the pleasure to discuss the business aspect of what these new changes mean. As a tragic result of the war on drugs, countless numbers of people have been incarcerated and labeled as felons for the non-violent crime of possessing of marijuana as an illicit substance. Thomas Malone, GMU undergrad Alum & UVA Law Alumni, Founder of Arena Group, shares some great information and resources on how we can help these people get their lives back. Arena group is also an excellent medium for budding cannabis businesses. Janay Brown is a self made business woman located in Suffolk, Virginia. She is the hands on Owner of the Hemp and Fruit based rolling paper company, Growf. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to record an interview for the "Love to Legalize it!" minisode of Love Letters To Virginia Podcast. As a Northern Virginia native, Janay truly knows the meaning of diversity and inclusivity and has grand designs for her brand and business rolling forward July 1st. Watch the full interview to hear more from this lovely, passionate and savvy young entrepreneur and don't forget to Follow and subscribe to Love Letters to Virginia Podcast on your preferred platform!
