In this episode of the Jon Myer Podcast, the host, Jon Myer, engages in a conversation with Mike Thompson, a senior product manager at AMD. The episode centers around AMD's presence at the New York Summit and its success in the cloud computing realm. Mike's participation at the summit is motivated by his desire to connect with the public cloud user community and elucidate the factors behind AMD's achievements. These achievements are primarily attributed to the company's ability to offer faster performance at a lower cost and increase computing capacity without inflating expenses.
The discussion also delves into the strategic partnership between AMD and AWS. Mike underscores the close collaboration between the two entities and highlights AMD's fourth-generation Epic processor, known as Genoa, which has been embraced by AWS across diverse instances worldwide. In this podcast, Jon Myer discusses budgeting and forecasting cloud costs with Jeff Blume, a senior optimization solutions architect at AWS on the Optics team.
Jeff starts by explaining the differences between cost estimation, budgeting, and forecasting. Cost estimation focuses on calculating the cost of specific workloads, while budgeting is about allocating resources based on a predefined plan. Forecasting, on the other hand, involves predicting future financial outcomes based on anticipated events and assumptions.
To properly forecast cloud costs, Jeff suggests two methods: trend-based forecasting and driver-based forecasting. The trend-based forecast relies on historical patterns, assuming a consistent growth rate. In contrast, the driver-based forecast takes into account changes in demand drivers, such as new product launches, user influx, strategic expansion, or retiring workloads.
Jeff emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration between teams to improve cloud financial predictability. Weekly meetings, variance analysis, and understanding the impact of optimization efforts on the forecast are crucial to achieving accurate predictions.
He recommends using AWS tools like AWS Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection in conjunction with third-party tools to monitor and optimize cloud costs effectively. Furthermore, engaging in the cloud #FinOps community and staying updated on the latest best practices and benchmarks can help organizations save costs and improve their cloud financial management.
Overall, establishing open communication, understanding demand drivers, and utilizing appropriate forecasting methods and tools are essential steps to successfully budget and forecast cloud costs.
Jeff and Jon also delve into the various tools available for cost estimation on AWS, including the AWS service pages, the AWS pricing calculator, the price list APIs, and notifications for price changes. They discuss the challenges of accurately estimating costs and suggest strategies such as leveraging existing applications and workloads for insights, staying updated with the #finops community for best practices, and starting with simple metrics and reporting to track costs effectively.

Welcome to the Jon Myer Podcast, where we bring you experts who share their experiences and insights on the latest trends and challenges in the tech industry. Today, we have a very special guest, Roi Ravhon, joining us to talk about a topic that many of us can relate to - managing the cost of an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) environment.
As many of you may know, managing AWS EKS cost is no easy feat. What may seem cost-efficient at first can quickly become a nightmare down the road, especially when scaling up. With the use of Pods and Labels, but paying for Instances, it's essential to stay on top of your spending.
Adding EKS to your tech stack brings a lot of complexity, and while it can bring significant value to your organization, it can also lead to cloud-waste spirals and cost-effectiveness plummeting. It can take significant time to identify, prioritize, and optimize spend, not to mention implement changes without hurting production.
In other words, instead of reaping the benefits of Kubernetes, you may end up trading one issue for another. That's why we have Roi Ravhon with us today to share his expertise on building a cost-efficient EKS environment from day one. So, without further ado, let's dive into the discussion.

SMBs were among the worst-hit enterprises during the pandemic. After experiencing sudden and significant changes in consumer behavior and disruptions in day-to-day operations, SMBs recognize the need to build resilience and have the agility to adapt to change by transforming business models.
According to IDC however, While COVID did impact SMBs, many remain optimistic and expect a ‘return to normal’ before the end of 2023. This will require growth in revenue/sales, improved customer demand, and improved supply chain/inventory capabilities – benefits they can unlock with the cloud.

Today we're talking about multi-cloud, single-cloud hyper. I don't know what type of cloud we're talking about just yet. Actually, we're talking multi-cloud, but there's so much that we have to get into. What's the first thing you would recommend to me before going or even thinking about it?
Guest: Chris
I mean, my first, uh, recommendation would be don't do, don't do it. It's, it's a little bit counterintuitive, like coming from my background, but, you know, my, my first, uh, recommendation would be don't do it. Like, make sure that it's running somewhere, begin like one step at a time, deploy it, make sure that it's, uh, running somewhere and it's running fine. Understand, what it's required in order to run. Uh, if you are interested in a high availability look, look into a multi-region setup before you span the boundaries of a cloud. And, uh, you know, when you are, when you are there, I think, I guess that you will understand if you really need a multi-cloud or not. So ma the maturity of the application and the maturity of the team deploying, uh, developing and maintaining the application is really important. You shouldn't go like from square zero to like square 100. You should take one step, uh, learn along the way and see if it makes sense to go all the way up there. So yeah, don't do it. That's the bottom line.

Anthony Cole created the song and inspired music video around Amazonian culture called Bar Raiser. Including supporting Amazon internally during the pandemic with "Amazon Be Strong" and while you may never see it publicly, take a look at his latest song called "Rise Up".

Fitness has always been a part of my life starting in my early teenage years. Missing a workout has always been challenging for me mentally because I would feel lazy or unproductive. The past year has been a struggle for me with fitness, I don't feel like I have the motivation to workout but continue to just "show up" and what ultimately happens is progress doesn't happen. Which I start to wonder why I'm working out. Talking with Tony has helped me understand that taking time off is good not only good for me mentally but for my body.

Our next guest is no stranger to AWS and if you are following him on Twitter, you’d think that the two of them don’t get along. Why does it always seem like he posts something against AWS on social media.
Honestly it isn’t just AWS, sometimes you’ll find a few comments about some guy named Larry at Oracle.
Joining us today is Corey Quinn, I feel like I don’t need a long introduction or no intro necessary.

Securing the Matrix
What if I told you that Security for DevOps should come before DevSecOps? But wait, You’re probably saying “Jon, isn’t that the same thing?” I mean I’ve built in security for the CI/CD workflow when provisioning resources. I’m totally secure. But wait a second, who’s protecting or securing the tools you’ve set up and integrated into these workflows? Just because you trust the developers to provision a secure environment, are you making sure the tools that are being utilized are secure? 🔔 Don't forget to Like, Subscribe, and hit the notification 🔔 ✔ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/jonmyer/?sub_confirmation=1 📱 Social Media

“People before the process before the platform”
“Definition depends on the customer”
“What do they think multi-cloud means”
“Customer first”
“W/O the data you don’t have anything and data defines the approach”
Hi, Everyone, I’m your host Jon Myer for the Daily Tech Show This week we’ve been talking about this so-called “multi-cloud”. What is it? Are companies really investing in multiple cloud providers for the right reasons and capabilities? Are they selecting two or more providers for fear of vendor lock or for the unique services they offer. Don’t select multiple cloud providers to save on cost or vendor lock because in the end, you’ll be paying a lot more to support the environment, or use its services.

Ep#11 Daily Tech Show: Multi-Cloud with the DiscoPosse
"The reason you do it, isn't the reason you think you do it" & "You keep saying that word but it doesn't mean the thing you think it means" - Eric Wright
We are speaking with public cloud leaders and experts this week around multi-cloud. What are their thoughts? Is it worth implementing a multi-cloud solution? I’ve asked leading experts on why they would use multi-cloud and here’s what some of them had to say In the previous episodes I’ve used google’s definition on multi-cloud. But I’d like to define it myself and say enterprises are utilizing multiple public cloud providers and their services. Personally, I don’t think multi-cloud is a good idea but there are reasons on why you would utilize different cloud providers.
Example: using AWS for their Machine Learning capabilities but hosting their Exchange servers environment in Azure. Or maybe they acquired a company that was utilizing another cloud provider and now they need to integrate with it. Don’t select multiple cloud providers to save on cost or vendor lock because in the end, you’ll be paying a lot more to support the environment, or use its services.

What does the public sector think about multi-cloud? I’ve asked leading experts on why they would use multi-cloud and here’s what some of them had to say “You don’t wake up one morning and say I think I’ll start using multiple cloud providers” “Enterprises aren’t using multi-cloud for the reasons they think they’re using it for” “Data Transfer costs are real!” Joining the show as a regular guest Leon Sun CEO and founder of Sun Creative Services who will give us his thoughts on multi-cloud in the public sector

This also refers to the distribution of cloud assets, software, applications, across several cloud-hosting environments. Today we are taming the cloud or in this case multiple clouds with an expert Cloud Tamer around their thoughts on multi-cloud.
