Is it possible that the hottest health drink on the market isn’t a green juice or kombucha, but a delicious fizzy soda? David Lester is the Co-founder of the healthy beverage company OLIPOP, which makes tasty carbonated drinks and delicious sodas enriched with fiber and prebiotics to help with gut health. About the Guest:

BIO:

“David Lester is the Co-founder of OLIPOP, working alongside business partner Ben Goodwin to develop the first clinically-backed consumer beverage combining the flavors of classic soda with ingredients scientifically proven to support digestive health. David brings to OLIPOP nearly two decades of experience in the beverage industry--having started his career at Diageo, the world’s largest global spirits manufacturer.

Following a decade with Diageo and assignments in Sydney, Australia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, David left the drinks giant and headed to Northern California to pursue an entrepreneurial career. In 2013, David collaborated with Ben (his current business partner and OLIPOP co-founder) to launch Obi Probiotic Soda, a line of water kefir-based sodas. Following the sale of this business, David and Ben took the learnings they’d gained and embarked on their second venture together: OLIPOP.

A strategic thinker with a passion for disruptive innovation, David is on a mission to provide an

affordable, delicious alternative to soda that delivers cutting-edge health benefits to mainstream

consumers. Exercising the “break one rule, and break it hard” approach, he’s helped OLIPOP forge new territory as retailers and consumers identify prebiotics and fiber as the next big thing in digestive health.

Born and raised in England, David graduated from the University of Nottingham and currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife and two children.”

As an experienced business executive and marketing leader, I have had the opportunity to develop multiple marketing and business strategies across both IT and consumer packaged goods.

I pride myself on strategic thinking, results-driven determination, operational efficiency, and effective cross-functional management. I believe that in the absence of product knowledge or expertise, brands are a surrogate for quality and that our job as marketers is to make products accessible to customers.

Personally, I am inspired by strong women in business and entrepreneurs who have a story to tell. I am also an advocate for managing a well-rounded life, not just a job, as I think that is the rising tide that lifts all boats at home and in the workplace. I believe the rat race of go-go-go is not sustainable and often interferes with the best ideas. I am a die-hard achiever who is learning that taking a minute to think can exponentially increase the efficiency of achievement!”

About the Guest:

“Although I did play in bands in my youth, my heart is more in the technical side of music-making. I studied electronics at the University of Louisville and spent the mid-1980s touring as a live sound engineer. I experimented with whatever equipment I could afford, including “programming” a synthesizer using a small Radio Shack computer (with 2.5K of memory). I loved the control of producing music and bringing the essence of the artist to the audience. By 1987, I had acquired enough equipment to start recording my own music, but I found myself spending more time recording other bands instead. I stopped touring and ran DSL Studios full time.

Then I got a phone call offering me a position at Sweetwater. I moved to Fort Wayne in 1992 to become Sweetwater employee #20! I moved from Sales to Service, to Marketing, and then co-managed a growing team of hundreds of Sales Engineers until taking on the CMO role in 2016. Along the way, I developed the Service Department into an authorized service center for most of Sweetwater’s product lines; expanded the Sales department to over 400 Sales Engineers; developed Sweetwater University, which is a training program for new Sales Engineers; and helped create Sweetwater’s first catalogs and website, the latter of which has now expanded into a full-blown digital enterprise.

But I haven’t forgotten my technical roots: I continue to be involved with my Louisville recording studio, and I’ve been an instructor in live sound production in the music technology program at Purdue University Fort Wayne. And of course, I still play the bass every chance I get. Besides music and sound, some of my passions include travel, auto racing, photography (another technical art form), aviation, cycling, basketball, tennis, and volleyball.”

  • Deloitte Insights ”2022 Global Marketing Trends” report and the article “Authentically inclusive marketing”

About the Guest:

BIO: “Award-winning global marketing executive and digital transformation leader who builds brands that customers love, the world needs, and shareholders applaud.

I started my career as a strategy consultant at Deloitte. While there, I learned the power of diverse thinking in building growth strategies across industries. I also learned adaptive leadership skills through working for multiple clients at once. Most of all, I mastered the art of turning data into real customer insights to create strategies that work.

Upon graduating from the Executive MBA program at the University of Chicago, I helped launch a startup and led my first marketing team. As CMO of the largest K-12 professional networking website, I learned how to create a brand from scratch and bring it to the market. We pioneered digital business and marketing to lower acquisition costs and increase LTV of customers.

I exited the startup world, in the middle of the credit crisis, and I joined Mindshare. There I learned how large enterprises use paid media to drive growth. I believe that focusing on what’s in the impressions matters so I went to Discovery to learn from the best content creators and marketers in the world.

Digitas provided the opportunity to be a leader at the hottest digital creative agency at the time. I was given the mission to drive the emerging practices of Social, Mobile and Content. I was fortunate to be nominated, attend and graduate from the Publicis Executive Development Program. As SVP of Marketing I led initiatives for American Express, bringing a DTC streaming platform to market for NBC, launching a new Google phone, building a social studio for Diageo and custom content campaigns for L’Oreal. Our team won a Cannes Lion for Taco Bell and the Grand Prix Lion for AstraZeneca.

At IBM, I’ve done a lot. So rather than talk about it here, want to chat?”

“I am betting on the democratization of commercial real estate.”

Should commercial real estate investment be more attainable? Dustin Cohn, the Chief Marketing Officer of Cadre, makes a case for “the democratization of commercial real estate.” Tune in to hear Dustin getting the word out about the potential opportunity.

Key Insights What Is It Like To Join a Blossoming Company After Working at a Larger One? Going from a large company to a smaller one can mean sacrificing many resources. But in exchange, you are likely to find a hearty opportunity for growth and experimentation. Cohn explains that CMOs entering these sorts of blossoming companies need to take a simultaneous, two-pronged approach:

“You have to parallel path in this environment — building the foundation that you know is necessary to get the organization to the next level while also looking for those quick wins and quick hits.” What is “The Democratization of Commercial Real Estate?” Cohn describes the steps Cadre is taking to further “the democratization of commercial real estate.” Cadre is lowering the “minimums” it takes to invest, reducing fees, and creating an opportunity for investors to have increased opportunities for “liquidity.” How Should Marketers Consider Raising Awareness and Building Brands? Most marketers’ first thought when raising awareness is to find and highlight the differentiator. Cohn believes that in a category like commercial real estate, which is underrepresented, you instead need to first educate the consumer on the category as a whole. The implication from his take is that category penetration needs to come first, then education, then differentiation.

“I believe that the awareness building… of Cadre will come from educating consumers on the category and, believe me, there's enough growth for us and our competitors.”

“Everything is fast. It's becoming more immersive… I think there [are] a whole load of developments [that are] going to happen in video, which is truly exciting to me as a marketeer too.”

In this age of fast-moving, immersive and interactive media, how can marketing professionals maximize their impact on consumers? Jennifer Griffin Smith, the CMO at Brightcove, suggests the answer lies in the power of video. Tune in to hear what strategies Jennifer is championing at the video platform and solutions company and how marketers across the industry can step up their game!

Key Insights

Why Is Storytelling So Important in Marketing?

“If you think about your best show or your movie that you've watched and you come away and you are emotionally connected with it. You’re connected to those characters. There's a villain. There's a hero. That's what we all have to create too, because that's how we can break through. And we can let our audiences really understand about what we deliver versus somebody else.”

Jennifer draws a distinction between the early days of tech marketing, which were more product-focused, and the story-driven marketing of today.

What Can CMOs Learn From Media Companies?

“When I look at our media companies and what they're doing with content, it's so precious to them because it's revenue. Every person that goes onto their site and consumes a piece of content is a dollar value of revenue, or tens of dollars… Everyone they lose is a revenue decline. And everyone they can upsell and retain is a revenue increase. We don't think about customers like that in the B2B world.”

Working closely with numerous media clients at Brightcove, Jennifer has absorbed valuable insights that she applies to her marketing mentality: “Every time I can attract somebody, keep them, convert them, and grow them, and act more like a media company, then I'm satisfying my ROI more, but I'm also satisfying the audience…”

What Is a Common Mistake That Companies Make Regarding Video?

“They think that they don't have video. I actually had a conversation with somebody today that said, ‘How can you help me create more video?’ And so my question was, “You’re creating brand videos, correct?’ ‘Yes.’... ‘Have you held any webinars or virtual events recently?’ ‘Yes.’ And I said, ‘How many?’ We talked about the number of hours. ‘Then you've got hours of video… You've actually got more video in your company than you know, but you just need to be able to manage it, reutilize it, and repurpose it, and then get everybody using it.’”

With the pervasiveness of video across the entire business landscape, Jennifer sees an opportunity for companies to connect with their clients in more personal and meaningful ways than ever before.

About the Guest:

“Jennifer leads the marketing organization at Brightcove, encompassing product marketing, demand generation, and marketing communications, and is responsible for operational execution on a global level. Smith is an international marketing executive who brings more than 20 years of experience in global technology companies to Brightcove. She is recognized for her leadership skills in go-to-market strategy and has a proven track record of making improvements across product, sales, and marketing for public and private companies. Most recently, she served as CMO at Alfresco Software (recently acquired by Hyland), where she led the transformation of the company’s positioning from technology vendor to platform solution provider, managing all aspects of marketing.

Prior to joining Alfresco, Smith was CMO of Software AG, an enterprise software company with more than 10,000 customers in over 70 countries. Prior to that, she served as the CMO of Globoforce, and as Senior Vice President and CMO of Avid Technology and Progress Software. She also held senior marketing roles at Information Builders, PeopleSoft and Microsoft.”

“Many of us lead a quiet life of helping others through mentorship, through advice, through guidance, [and] through championing their growth. And you can do that on an individual basis, but when you unite — when the scale of all vectors [are] pointing in one direction, [it] is very powerful.”

Despite so much diverse talent, a lack of Black representation in the C-suite has persisted in the marketing industry. This disparity is what led marketing leader Jerri DeVard to found BECA, the Black Executive CMO Alliance. Listen and learn how the organization is uniting, elevating, and opening doors for Black business leaders while inspiring a change in the marketing world that is long overdue.

Mention: * “Rebranding a Century-old Business with Kevin Warren of UPS” (“Business X factors” podcast)

Key Insights What Sparked Jerri To Create BECA?

“Going through the pandemic and… reading a lot more trade magazines than I normally had and looking at a lot more main stage speeches that were virtual that I couldn't travel to, I saw a lot of great work on display from marketers. But [in] every kind of roundup of the best, many of the articles where they were quoting the top trends in marketing, many of the main stage presentations I saw, I didn't see anyone that looked like me… I didn't see the people that I knew, [and] I thought, ‘Well, something's wrong here.’”

With BECA, Jerri sought to create a space for Black marketing leaders to empower one another and boost representation in the C-suite.

How Is the “BECA Playbook” Used To Empower Black Leaders?

“We talk to our future leaders about how they leverage the power of being different, because it's not about a cultural ‘fit.’ It's about a cultural ‘add.’ How does your voice and your experience of being othered, of being the ‘lonely only,’ [and] of being in the minority help expose people to wider, better, bigger, broader thinking? Because I can guarantee you their customer and consumer base is just as wide and broad.”

Leaders at BECA are encouraged to bring their unique life experiences and perspectives to the table — not just for the sake of their own personal and professional growth but also to benefit those around them.

How Can Business Professionals Outside of BECA Support Its Cause?

“You don't have to be Black to ask the question. You don’t have to be BIPOC to ask the question. Ask the question, ‘Why?’ ‘Why don't we have more Blacks in our C-suite?’ ‘Why don't we have anybody Black on our board?’ ‘Why don’t we have representation in our communications and our advertising and not just in front of the camera but behind the camera.’ You may not have the power to change it, but everyone has the power to ask the question.”

“In the nineties… it didn't matter what your legacy media business was – you could be a newspaper, radio station, magazine, local TV station – you became a digital business too… So, I feel in the [two-thousand] twenties, streaming is analogous to that. Whatever your other media business is, if you're a mid-to-large publishing or media company, you will also be a streaming media company.”

With Netflix reportedly expecting to lose subscribers for the second quarter in a row, is the oversaturated streaming market finally doomed? Not according to Navdeep Saini, the Co-Founder and CEO of DistroScale, Inc. Listen to learn how the company is giving publishers back the power by providing video as a service, and why audiences should be excited about the future of media.

Mentions: * “Navdeep Saini. DistroTV.” (“Up Next with Gabriella Mirabelli” podcast) * “The Netflix Bubble Is Finally Bursting” (“The Atlantic” article)

Key Insights

What’s Unique About How DistroScale Deals With Publishers and Content Creators?

“I think the key differentiator of our model is we do all of these things for publishers, but we take a cut off the advertising revenue essentially. So we provide the entire platform – infrastructure, hosting, building the channel, syndicating the channel – [and] all of that at no up front or fixed costs to the media company.”

According to Navdeep, the pervasiveness of streaming across the entire media landscape will shift the market away from the traditional subscription-based model and toward the ad-supported approach he has implemented at DistroScale and its streaming service, DistroTV™: “I think in the next five to ten years… ad-supported streaming is going to be a much bigger ecosystem than the subscription-based streaming ecosystem.”

How Has Connected TV Impacted Marketing and Advertising?

“From an advertising perspective, this makes media buying and advertising a lot more addressable, right?... When you buy advertising on a website, you can see engagement on all that. And TV advertising has traditionally been more like, at least the impact has been — is calculated using estimates or surveys… But now, essentially every impression that is delivered, you can actually track... So it becomes a lot more addressable. You're essentially buying TV advertising the same way as you would be buying any other digital advertising.”

Is There Room For Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV Services in What Many Think Is an Oversaturated Market?

“Subscription-based streaming services… are essentially, the way I look at it as sort of… like [the] big studios now… and they can bring you great content. So, they can bring you a lot of original content… If they become more like big studios, there will always be independent creators too… And the people who don't get bought by the big studios, now where do they go? So that's where I think FAST platforms [come in]...”

Since subscription-based streamers have come to so closely resemble traditional television studios, Navdeep has seized upon an under-tapped market: “You have to have an avenue for independent creators and other content to have the maximum reach to audiences, right? That's where I feel we have the opportunity.”

About the Guest:

“Navdeep Saini is a co-founder and the chief executive officer of DistroScale, a content marketing platform and marketplace for delivering, managing, and measuring native content across websites, mobile web, and apps. Previously, he was the senior vice president of ad products and engineering at Glam Media.

During the course of his career, Saini was a vice president at both DoubleClick and Yahoo!, all before he was a lead engineer at Med-link Technologies. He was also a co-founder and the chief technology officer of Buysight.”

“I think all of us feel – especially companies like Emburse that are getting back to meeting with customers in person – that there's no substitute for the human connection — to be able to be in three dimensions, talk to somebody, [and] relate to them on a personal level…”

For business leaders, what's the right balance between competing and caring? Grant Johnson, the Chief Marketing Officer at the expense management company Emburse, claims that a “human connection” remains crucial for success. Tune in for some valuable marketing insights from Grant about leadership, empathy, and “humanizing work.”

Mentions: * “The Five C’s of Marketing with Emburse’s Grant Johnson”: on the Marketing Today podcast. * Grant’s Company Bio on the Emburse Leadership Page

Key Insights

What Excites Grant About the Spend Optimization/Management Mission at Emburse?

“I think it's been a constant focus in my career… connecting with customers, and we are trying to humanize work. Our mission is one of the primary reasons that I joined Emburse. We want to help eliminate the time-consuming and tedious tasks that get in the way of doing more important work, or giving back to your community, or spending more time with your family. So, it's a very noble mission.”

Throughout his highly accomplished professional career, Grant has made it a priority to treat his clients as people first, and customers second. That mentality harmonizes well with Emburse’s mission to “humanize work,” which aims to help clients use their time in more meaningful ways.

Has Grant’s Sports Background Influenced His Leadership Methods?

“I love the drive to win, to excel, [and] to be number one, but it has to be moderated by humanizing work and being authentic with your staff, and being compassionate.”

A longtime competitive tennis player, Grant’s drive to succeed has helped him excel in the marketing field. He warns, however, not to let the competitive fire swallow up other key principles: “We have [what] we call the ‘SEE IT’ core values — [the] executive team, we came up with: Sincerity, Empathy, Empowerment, Individuality, and Teamwork… They're all important, but you have to be empathetic, especially in these times.” How Does Grant Use Storytelling To Connect With Customers? Growing up with dreams of becoming a film director, Grant has leaned on his storytelling skills to communicate with customers impactfully.

“So for me, it's trying to connect on a human level [and] in authentic fashion, something that's meaningful to the audience. I learned, even though I started in a pretty technical role in product management, product marketing, that what it does is important, [but] what it means is more important… Customers want outcomes. They don't want your technology. They want to solve a problem. And if you can describe the outcomes, the future state, [and] the goodness of being a partner with your company and… adopt your solution, then I think you're a long ways to connecting.”

About the Guest:

BIO: “As chief marketing officer, Grant leads global marketing for Emburse, overseeing marketing strategies, programs and tactics designed to increase market leadership, generate demand and enhance customer advocacy.

Grant has a storied history working in senior marketing roles for some of the best-known brands in technology, including FileNet/IBM, Symantec and Toshiba. Before joining Emburse, Grant was CMO of cybersecurity company Cylance (acquired by BlackBerry). Prior to that, he was the CMO of Kofax and CMO of Pegasystems.

Grant holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University.”

“I think a lot of what I was trying to do prior to starting DataGrail is watch other founders, other CEOs, other executives, and try to observe where they’ve hit potholes.”

Data is not going away, nor are users’ demands for privacy. Daniel Barber, CEO & Co-Founder of DataGrail, explains how businesses must understand the personal data they hold and then strive to be transparent to necessary parties. Learn more about how Daniel prepared for success by studying business potholes. Key Insights

Why Should CMOs Strive for Transparency?

“We've entered this age of privacy, but really what we're seeing is a sense of skepticism of how businesses are using our information. And the modern CMO is going to continue to struggle with that because ultimately they need to be transparent with their consumer or employee or whoever the constituent may be that they're looking to target because if they're transparent, ultimately that leads to trust for the consumer… “ What Lessons Did Daniel Learn From His Experience in Japan? Daniel shares a company value: “One of our values is ‘iterate and evolve.’” He connects this value to a book that is provided to all employees at DataGrail, “The Lean Startup,” and then to a mentality he came to appreciate in Japan.

“But If you think about “The Lean Startup,’ that concept is really from Kaizen — the Japanese concept of continuous improvement. And so I think the Japanese figured that out [and] that it was very effective. It's built into their cultural DNA as well about incremental change.”

Daniel suggests those in the US could benefit from this notion of “incremental change.” Perhaps in the states we are too concerned with immediate results. Substantial change often takes time and is won through many successive, small steps. What’s the Value of a Shared Entrepreneurial Journey? Daniel expresses the helpfulness of having two other co-founders by his side at DataGrail.

“And I think most founders need a partner. That is very important. At least one, to go through the journey together because it's hard. There's no doubt about it… For us, what was interesting Is we all came from backgrounds of third-party applications and had seen these challenges.” How Are Businesses Addressing Data Privacy Across Borders? “What I can tell you that we're seeing though, which is interesting, is DataGrail customers, and most businesses we speak with, are honoring the rights that you and I have no matter where we are. So the right to have control of our information is being honored by most businesses, no matter what location you live in. So, there's becoming a global standard of rights that you and I have because businesses just have no other choice.”

It’s fascinating to consider that even though there is no uniform worldwide privacy policy, companies are starting to come up with a certain standard across boundaries. Is this the best people should hope for in terms of the protection of data privacy?

“I think the old model of a linear development or a linear approach, it's all gone right? Now, we quickly put something out there, we create MVPs, we co-create it with customers, [and] we test it out… That really, really excites me because we are getting to solutions to problems in the fastest possible way.”

Will Augmented Reality Lead to Big Changes in Marketing?

Regarding augmented reality (AR), Arun believes that “marketing will obviously go through a lot of change once AR and the whole aspect of [the] metaverse comes into a little bit more reality. I think even the function of marketing is going to go through a massive change.”

Is ABM a Natural Progression in Marketing?

“Segmentation was our first attempt to make some sense out of the market out there. So ABM is, to me, a fine tuning over the years of that segmentation approach. The segments got smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller as we became more and more client-centric in our approach in our go-to-market. So, in that sense, I think ABM is a logical evolution.”

How Can Marketers Stay Client-centered in This Rapidly Changing Landscape?

“... Build your own relationships within the client organizations independent of the sales relationships. Because, obviously, a sales relationship is, in many ways, a little bit of a transactional relationship. You as a marketeer can transcend that short-term nature of the transactional relationship... Building your personal relationships is probably the best place to start.”

As the old adage goes: ‘The more things change, the more they stay the same.’ There is no replacing the fundamental value of client relationships for marketers. In fact, the importance of knowing your customer only grows as consumer demands become more specialized. As Arun puts it when he explains the value of ”field marketing”: “Start with the customer and getting to start with the customer requires us to understand the customer, understand their needs, and then work backwards, working with the rest of the organization to make the magic happen.”

“[With] startups or turnarounds… almost always there it's a breach of the basics. And I had this theory that in order to get to the next level of growth or the next platform for growth… it's all about simplification.”

What’s the most effective way a marketing team can help its company grow? The answer may be simpler than you think. Roy Ritthaler, the Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Flexera, talks about his first eight months at the IT solutions company and why getting back to the basics is essential for growth. Tune in to learn how to take your marketing team to the next level! Key Insights What Was Roy’s First Priority as the New CMO at Flexera?

“I don't walk into any situation with an agenda… I have a plan. I have an idea. I want to move the ball forward, but you first have to — you really actually have to assess it.”

Before making any major changes to Flexera’s marketing approach, Roy explains that he first worked to understand the situation and to bring his team together. He shares that his first wins were people-oriented. Roy describes team building accordingly: “Everybody on the team has to know that you have their back.”

What Does Getting Back to the Basics Look Like in Practice?

“You have to look at what you have. What are your fundamentals? How does sales work with marketing? How do leads flow? How does advertising connect with anything else you do?... How are the people interacting? How does engineering connect with it?... What's the basic map? If you can't draw it on one page, you should be able to.”

Focusing on the basics creates a solid foundation so that a team can flourish.

What’s the Power in Being Authentic?

“When you're talking to prospects, I think it's all about authenticity. You take what you have from your customer base and you translate it into the market… It's not the razzle dazzle it used to be. You have a little sizzle. You’ve got to have a vision. You have to give them a place they're going, but you do it in a really authentic way.”

Roy has found being authentic to be a central asset in both attracting customers and creating a great team. In fact, he notes “candor” as his “favorite” cultural point at Flexera: “The idea of being out there, being real, not being offensive, but being real and being transparent… putting it on the table. That's really hard to do for people, and we encourage it a lot.”

“I think the marketing role needs to be a bit of a scientist and a bit of an artist, and I don't think that's going to change. I think it's going to get even more [like} that type of a role.”

Is marketing both art and science? If so, will that still be the case in the future? Monica Ho, the Chief Marketing Officer of SOCi, has the answer to these marketing questions and more. SOCI supports the marketing efforts of businesses with multiple locations. Therefore, Monica offers a wide-ranging perspective on the current marketing landscape and what moves to pay attention to. Listen to learn what’s marketing smoke and what could become marketing fire. Key Insights

How Does the CMO Position Change as a Company Grows? “The evolution of the marketing role is interesting. I think it's very different when you're in a marketing role and you’re in the seat in a fast-moving startup. And I think one of the reasons why some marketers are short-lived in that seat is because they don't realize that every stage of growth you're actually playing a different role.”

Here are a couple of ways Monica sees the role changing as a company scales: “But as your company is scaling from say 10 million to 50 million that role is very different, You've got to be very hands-on. You've got to be part of building your team. And it's very tactical from 50 to a hundred million, for instance…” How Should Companies View Selling Products on Social Media? “We love our brick and mortar stores, but those businesses that are successful moving forward are going to recognize that social is an extension of that shopping experience.”

Monica sees the value in brands' creating content and ads digitally and on social media. But she also believes creating communities where customers can create content and interact with a brand's product can be beneficial. She suggests there may be an increased trust factor if customers see other consumers interacting favorably with a product. Are Influencers Effective? (34:16) “I am not a big believer in this influencer trend. I think that especially the younger consumers… they're not believers of celebrities being influencers. I think they question it a lot. They understand that a lot of them are sponsored. I do believe in the very micro-influencer, the community influencer…”
