Equestrians - have you ever found yourself in a place where you can’t say no? Do you regularly take on extra work or overcommit yourself? Do you avoid disagreeing with people or voicing your honest opinion? Are you frustrated that you never seem to have time for yourself, or your wants and needs?

You might be a people pleaser.

Here’s the thing. Lots of people will offer you advice like “just go and do what you want!”, “live your best life!”. This doesn’t work.

As a people pleaser, the dilemma is that you want to make others happy, AND make yourself happy. Then you end up in a situation where if you do what you want - you’ll feel guilty, but if you do what others want - you’ll feel resentment.

It’s a lose-lose proposition for you.

The actionable takeaway from this episode will set you up with a few small and doable tips to start working out of your people pleasing habit.

Equestrians - if I said in two months time I’m going to take you to the showgrounds, and if you can jump a metre show jump round I’ll give you $5 million dollars. Would you start practicing now, or the day before? Hopefully, NOW.

So why don’t we do the same with our mindset?

In today’s episode, we’ll talk about some mindset-related actions, thoughts or feelings that we can start to plan for ahead of time. We’ll also outline some steps to help you start this process.

This is one of the best life coaching concepts I was ever taught.

Here’s the deal. You will always feel pain in response to difficult circumstances in life, whether these are really big events, or smaller but still jarring experiences.

But, there’s a big difference in what TYPE of pain you will be feeling - clean or dirty? We’ll all be familiar with both - one is a response to the circumstance, whereas the other is where we create additional suffering, by stacking on extra layers of thoughts and feelings.

The actionable takeaway will help you break down a current pain point, and work out where you’re in clean or dirty pain.

Equestrians, being able to offer a clear and concise ‘no’ is all about being empowered and in control. Saying ‘no’ recognises that we are the agents of our own boundaries.

But, why is it that so many of us are totally unable to say ‘no’?

In today’s episode we are joined by Ben Netterfield, a Mindset and Equestrian Coach, to discuss the importance of being able to say ‘no’, and the clear links to other aspects of self care. We’ll dive into our internal bullies, people pleasing, excuse making and why you can’t outperform your own anxiety.

It’s a tough lesson, being able to say ‘no’, starting to care for ourselves ahead of others, but it’s an incredibly important one.

*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT*

I’ve changed the podcast name.
Yes, it’s no longer ‘My Stable Relationship’ - it’s now the ‘Equestrian Mindset Academy’ Podcast.

No need to panic - it’ll still be the same great content, guests and mindset work - just packaged neatly to align with our FUTURE EQUESTRIAN MINDSET COURSES which we will be releasing. More information to come soon!

Today I’m letting you in on one of the mindset shifts that has had the biggest impact for me with my horses, and in my life more broadly - the concept of ‘best current thinking’.

Best current thinking means that you are trying your best with the information you have at hand.

Here’s the thing, as equestrians, we are really prone to analysing and evaluating things we did in the past, and it can lead to us beating ourselves up over it or refusing to take future action.

BUT the concept of ‘best current thinking’ can release this sense of wrongdoing, because if you were trying your hardest in that moment, despite whether you would repeat your actions, it was the best you knew at the time. It’s that simple.

In today’s actionable takeaway we’ll talk about how you can stop beating yourself up over a certain training instance, or moment in time.

Equestrians, we can think of our life as going through different seasons or different chapters.

The most important thing is that we are able to SEE, UNDERSTAND, ACCEPT and then PLAN around our priorities in each of the chapters.

If you feel unsettled, unhappy or unsatisfied in your current stage of life, normally what has happened is that you had goals and dreams, but haven’t yet reached them, causing a sense of disillusionment or disempowerment. This is why it’s so important to acknowledge and accept - so we can align your goals appropriately with your current stage of life.

Equestrians, we've all felt it - that sinking feeling when you start comparing yourself to someone else.

Maybe it's a friend, family member, someone in the competition arena, at the barn, on social media. Whatever the situation, you're suddenly convinced that the other person is better, more talented, smarter, more successful than you. Convinced that their horse is more athletic, calmer, better educated - whatever!

It leaves you feeling gutted, deflated and worthless.

You’re not alone.

Listen in on our guest episode today with Lucy Brown, a Life, Mindset and Business Coach, as we discuss SO MANY different aspects of comparisonitis, and teach you the very important first step to overcoming it!

Equestrians, do you ever get to the end of the day, and your 'To Do' list has gotten longer, not shorter? Ever find yourself going to ride your horse, purely because it was on your schedule, but not knowing what you’re actually going to do in your session?

I know that feeling.
I’ve recently defaulted back into my tendency to be a human ‘doing’, not a human ‘being’.

This episode is our reminder that we need to start coupling the word ‘productivity’, with the word ‘intentionality’.

In this episode we’ll speak about toxic productivity, and why you end up feeling like you can’t sit still, like you should be doing more, and why rest is for the weak - yet you burn yourself out, make yourself sick, or start to snap at the horses and humans in your life.

The actionable takeaway in this episode will help you slow down and allow space for intentionality now, ultimately saving you time and energy later.

You need to be aware of how the questions you ask yourself impact the thoughts or feelings you create, and therefore impact your actions and results. If the question itself is limiting, it can hold us back. If the question is curious and open, it can broaden our possibilities.

We need to learn how to ask ourselves better questions in order to uncover core beliefs, break through negative thought patterns (conscious or unconscious), and increase self awareness.

Basically, are the questions you’re asking yourself helping you reach your equestrian or life goals?

If not, time to listen in.

When assessing a circumstance, you can control only the things that you can change, or the things that you can choose.

In this episode, we’ll walk through some examples of things that are in and out of your control in certain circumstances, and why it’s important to understand your full spectrum of control. Trust me, the examples might surprise you - did you know that we can never truly be in control of other people? That we can never truly be in control of our horses?

The actionable takeaway is an important exercise to push you to identify what is in or out of your control, and to really take this understanding to a deeper level, so that it can benefit your horse training or rehabilitation.

Running away from your circumstances is a race you’ll never win.

In this episode, I’ll open your eyes to the potential that you might actually be running from (or avoiding) circumstances that present in your life - horse related or other - rather than making measured and informed decisions. While our brains think running away is an excellent option, there’s a few significant downsides which we’ll discuss in the episode.

The actionable takeaway is an important place to start, with a few different options to work out if you’re running away from your circumstances or not.

Asking for advice can either stifle your progress, or help you take the next step in your journey - applicable to your equestrian pursuits or in life more broadly!

In this episode, I’m going to propose three specific groups who are best to seek advice from. We will also discuss the mindset behind why you aren’t receiving ‘good’ advice - usually because you aren’t being specific with your language, you aren’t sure of the outcome that you want from the advice, or you don’t know what you’re hoping to gain by asking.

The actionable takeaway will give you a set of prompts to make sure that the next time you seek advice, you do so in the most effective way possible - taking you closer to reaching your goals!

You are so worried that you might fail if you were to try something new - swapping disciplines, testing a different farrier regime, swapping feed, trying a new training method - anything. Yet the irony is that you’ve failed anyway by not trying, by not going after what might be possible.

When you tell yourself, or you let others tell you, that it’s too hard, too confusing, unknown or unlikely, you fail before you’ve even given yourself the slightest opportunity to succeed. You avoid action in order to avoid the associated feeling.

The important thing is to be able to recognise the different ‘types’ of failing ahead of time, and to see which type resonates with you. It’s only once you have the awareness that you can choose to change.

The actionable takeaway will teach you how to make one tiny yet incredibly powerful mindset shift to reframe your story, and to make sure you’re not allowing yourself to fail ahead of time.

We all have a narrative running in our minds, in every aspect of our lives. It’s a collection of our thoughts and feelings from our past, and a collection of thoughts and feelings that we have about our future. If we think the same thought or feel the same feeling over and over, it becomes a deeper part of us. It becomes something we truly believe, something that we stop questioning and rather that we take as fact. This is when we’ve turned it into our story.

Now, everyone has a story, and that’s not a problem. The real question is, are you stuck in your own story?

The actionable takeaway will teach you how to break apart your story about your horse, how to separate facts from thoughts, and what to do next to reframe or change your story.

What if instead of our decisions being ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, there was no such thing? What if we were able to adapt our thoughts, and allow ourselves permission to use a trial and error approach instead?

There are probably areas in your life where you naturally default to a trial and error approach. However, I want to talk in this podcast about the times when you might be avoiding a trial and error approach, or where you don’t believe you can follow a trial and error approach. I want to take you out of your comfort zone, and show you that a trial and error approach can be extended to many, many significant decisions in your life.

Today’s actionable takeaway will set you on the path of using a trial and error approach for one current complex problem or decision of your choosing - equestrian or life related!

Looking to data rather than falling into drama is a skill, a conscious choice and a response option that we all have.

However, to be able to effectively default to data over drama, you need to actually HAVE data… If you’re not tracking data, there is simply no way to know what is working and what is not working in your training or rehabilitation plans. There is no way to split decisions or solve complex problems, other than your thoughts and feelings - which we’ve already learned before tend to skew circumstances, right?

Today’s actionable takeaway will set you on the path of mapping out the data that you need to solve a complex problem or make a decision associated with your equestrian training or rehabilitation, or in life more broadly.

“Don’t wait for your feelings to change to take the action. Take the action and your feelings will change” - Barbara Baron.

If you’re like me and taking responsibility for your own journey, let’s not wait around and trust the process - a magic process that hasn’t actually been outlined or developed. Rather, let’s trust yourself. Trust yourself to take action, trust yourself to step outside of your comfort zone, trust yourself to plan, prepare, and develop strategies to support you. I want you to trust yourself to get results and follow your own journey.

Today’s actionable takeaway will set you on the path of determining if you’re motivated, taking action and trusting yourself, and if not, it’ll help you determine what the consequences are.
