Last time we spoke, I was working on a major career transition. For months, I was wrestling with the idea of starting my own organization. I kept telling myself that I would wait until after medical school to become an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Out of all the wisdom that I drew from, I found that there is no time like the present. There is an opportunity for leadership in healthcare; all it takes is a spark of courage. With the finale of season one, comes the countdown of a lifetime. Prepare for liftoff.

Today I am talking with Dr. Kathryn Reid, a researcher, professor of nursing, and leader at the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia. In this episode, Dr. Reid and I talk about the dynamic and impactful role that nurse practitioners play in healthcare. I got in touch with Dr. Reid after reading an article from the School of Nursing titled "Moving the Needle on NPs' Autonomy." Dr. Reid's thoughts on nurse practitioner autonomy shed a light on a larger issue in our healthcare system; giving advanced practice providers autonomy. Throughout the episode we explore the upper echelons of the nursing practice while also sharing our experiences as providers.

This episode is an example of what I hope to bring to medicine. Health is about more than reading and processing information, it's about embracing who we are individually. Throughout the episode I'm going to talk about my personal trauma and how I'm using my mental health to bring vulnerability and compassion into healthcare.

For the first episode of the Scrub Talk podcast, I talk about a health crisis that is slowly infecting the body of the American healthcare system. With cases on the rise, it's no surprise that mental illness is affecting healthcare workers; myself included. I talk about my experience as a frontline health worker and the facts surrounding burnout in healthcare.
