Have you ever felt like an outsider? You’re not alone. The world of fintech is dominated by the same old voices, drowning out the stories of diverse founders and leaders.
Humans of Fintech changes that. This season we’re bringing you stories of diverse leaders who were once outsiders, and how they since found belonging in our industry. You’ll learn how they became the inspiring fintech operators they are today and what they’re working on right now.
Hosted by Nicole Casperson, journalist and founder of the WTFintech? newsletter. The show shines a spotlight on those voices underrepresented in fintech, particularly women and people of color. Every one of them took the path less traveled, and embodies what fintech is supposed to be: An alternative version of finance, powered by a new model that gives equal access to everyone.
Nicole deep dives into the minds of world-class guests like Shruti Joshi of Facet Wealth, Henry Yoshida of Rocket Dollar, and Jean Smart of Penelope.
In every interview Nicole’s guest will share their story of feeling like an outsider and the specific challenges they faced making progress in their career. You’ll hear the a-ha moment they found connection in the industry,, and how they’re moving the dial when it comes to re-shaping fintech for the better.
If you’ve ever felt isolated, or that your perspective just hasn’t been heard before, Humans of Fintech is here to challenge that.
Season 2 drops on May 4th with new episodes every Wednesday. Make sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.

This guide will provide you with a comprehensive overview of venture capitalism and equip you with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions when it comes to raising capital.
Introduction to Venture CapitalismVenture capitalism is the practice of investing in newly established businesses with the expectation of a higher return on investment. It is a form of private equity and typically involves high-risk investments in startups and other early-stage businesses. Venture capitalists provide financial capital, managerial expertise, and access to networks in exchange for a stake in the company.
Venture capitalists are typically wealthy individuals, family offices, or institutional investors with a high risk tolerance and a long-term outlook. Venture capital firms are specialized firms that invest in startups and other early-stage companies with the aim of generating a return on their investments.
Venture capitalism is an attractive option for many entrepreneurs because it provides access to capital, resources, and expertise that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. However, venture capitalists typically demand a certain level of control over the company in exchange for their investments, which can be a difficult pill to swallow for some entrepreneurs.
Investment StrategiesVenture capitalists employ various investment strategies when it comes to investing in startups and other early-stage companies. These strategies typically involve identifying promising businesses, conducting due diligence, and deciding on the right amount of capital to invest.
One of the most popular strategies employed by venture capitalists is “spray and pray”, which involves making a large number of small investments in different startups. This strategy reduces the risk of a single investment failing and allows venture capitalists to diversify their portfolios.
Another popular strategy is “bottom fishing”, which involves investing in late-stage startups that have already gone through several rounds of financing. These startups are typically more mature and have a better chance of succeeding.
Finally, venture capitalists may employ a “top-down” approach, which involves investing in the most promising startups. This strategy involves a greater risk, as the venture capitalist is betting on the success of a single startup.
Types of Venture CapitalistsThere are several types of venture capitalists, each with their own strategies and preferences. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who invest their own money in startups.
These investors typically prefer to invest in early-stage companies and have a high risk tolerance.
Venture capital firms are specialized firms that invest in startups and other early-stage companies. These firms typically employ a variety of strategies and may have different preferences when it comes to investment types.
Family offices are private investment firms that invest the wealth of wealthy families. These firms typically invest in more mature companies and have a lower risk tolerance.
Finally, institutional investors are large companies, pension funds, and other organizations that invest in startups and other early-stage companies. These investors often invest in more mature companies and typically have a lower risk tolerance.
Managing RiskVenture capitalism is a high-risk investment strategy, and venture capitalists need to be aware of the associated risks. These risks include market risk, operational risk, financing risk, and legal risk.
Market risk refers to the risk that the company’s products or services may not be successful in the market. Operational risk refers to the risk that the company’s operations may be inefficient or ineffective. Financing risk refers to the risk that the company may be unable to raise additional capital.
Finally, legal risk refers to the risk that the company may be exposed to legal liabilities.
To mitigate these risks, venture capitalists need to conduct thorough due diligence and invest only in companies that have a clear path to success.
Steps to Raising Venture CapitalRaising venture capital can be a complicated process, and entrepreneurs need to be aware of the various steps involved.
The first step is to develop a business plan that outlines the company’s objectives and strategies. This plan should include a detailed description of the company, its products or services, and its target market.
The second step is to identify potential investors and develop relationships with them. This involves researching potential investors and networking with them to build relationships.
The third step is to present the company to potential investors. This involves creating a pitch deck, which is a presentation that outlines the company’s objectives and strategies.
The fourth step is to negotiate the terms of the investment. This involves negotiating the valuation of the company and the terms of the investment.
The final step is to close the deal. This involves signing the necessary documents and transferring the funds.
Valuation of Start-upsValuing a startup can be a complicated process, and venture capitalists need to be aware of the various valuation methods. These methods include the cost approach, the market approach, and the income approach.
The cost approach involves valuing the company’s assets and liabilities. This approach is typically used for more mature companies that have a track record of profitability.
The market approach involves valuing the company based on the valuations of comparable companies. This approach is typically used for early-stage companies that don’t have a track record of profitability.
Finally, the income approach involves valuing the company based on its expected future cash flows. This approach is typically used for startups that have a product or service with a clear path to profitability.
Finding the Right Investment PartnerFinding the right investment partner is crucial for entrepreneurs looking to raise venture capital. It’s important to find an investor that shares your vision and has a similar risk tolerance.
The best way to find the right investment partner is to network with potential investors and build relationships. This involves researching potential investors and attending industry events. It’s also important to research the track record of the investor and evaluate their portfolio to determine if they’re a good fit.
Once you’ve identified potential investors, it’s important to present your company to them in a professional manner. This involves creating a pitch deck, which should include a detailed description of the company and its objectives.
Finally, it’s important to negotiate the terms of the investment. This involves negotiating the valuation of the company and the terms of the investment.

Challenges faced by fintech startupsStarting a fintech startup is no easy feat. There are numerous challenges that entrepreneurs must face, from finding the right team to navigating the regulatory environment. Here are some of the most common challenges that fintech startups face.
The first challenge is the technical complexity of a fintech product or service. Fintech startups must develop a product or service that is both secure and meets customer needs. This requires a significant amount of time and resources, and it can be difficult to keep up with the ever-evolving technology landscape. It's important for fintech startups to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in the industry in order to remain competitive.
Then there’s the competitive landscape. The fintech industry is highly competitive, and it can be difficult for startups to stand out from the crowd. Additionally, established players have the advantage of extensive resources and customer bases, which can make it difficult for startups to gain traction.

Leadership In FintechFintech continues to expand rapidly. According to statistics, the global fintech market is continuing its upward trajectory
. As this sector expands and matures, the need for quality leadership grows as well. Leaders with a focus on fintech will play a pivotal role in the continued success of this industry. Here are three traits you should look for when searching for fintech leadership: Leaders who can see beyond their own interests Fintech leaders must be able to tackle problems from many different angles.
They have to be able to see more than just numbers and spreadsheets; they must be able to see people, too. Not everyone involved in fintech has the same motives or intentions—some may not have the best intentions at all. The ability of a leader in fintech to see beyond their own immediate interests will be what prevents corruption and exploitation of customers within this niche field.
HonestyA leader who is honest with themselves and others will have much better luck with problem solving. A lack of self-awareness can lead to poor decision-making, and a lack of integrity can lead to unethical practices.
Honesty is a trait that all fintech leaders must have in order to ensure that their solutions serve the needs of their customers and have no hidden ulterior motives. When leaders are honest with themselves, they will not make excuses for poor performance; instead, they will have the ability to recognize where they need to improve.
A desire to do goodA desire to do good goes beyond honesty. Many people can be honest and still not have the best intentions. It is one thing to seek to make a profit, but it is another to want to use that profit to help others. Fintech will inevitably be a part of someone’s financial future. It’s important to consider how you can benefit them.
Doing good is not always easy, but it is necessary if a leader wants to build a long-lasting and successful fintech business. Customers want to know that the products they are using are ethically sourced and that their data is safe. If a leader has a desire to do good, they will go the extra mile to make sure they are following ethical business practices and delivering value to their customers.
TransparencyTransparency breeds trust. Many fintech companies make a big deal about boasting about the security of their services, but many don’t make their methods public. That makes it hard for people to trust their claims. If a fintech leader is not transparent, it will be almost impossible for them to earn the trust of their customers.
Fintech companies that offer privacy and security solutions for customers must be acutely aware of the regulations and laws surrounding their industry. That means they must have a team of legal experts to ensure that they are compliant with all applicable laws. If a leader is not transparent, they could be breaking the law. That type of non-compliance could lead to fines and even criminal charges.
Diversity of thought and cultureFintech companies that want to last must promote a culture of diversity. You cannot solve a problem if you don’t understand the needs and desires of your customers. Leaders who are willing to hire people who think differently than they do and who come from different cultural backgrounds will be better able to serve their customers. W
hen hiring leaders and employees, fintech leaders should look for a wide range of skills, abilities, and cultures. Diversity is not about bringing in people who are exactly like you; it’s about bringing in people who can think differently and solve problems from new angles.

Save Time and MoneyThe data needed to report on the business performance, forecast future cash flows and make investment decisions is being extracted from the core business processes themselves. This means that the analysis and reporting can be done in real time, without the need for manual collection of data from separate systems.
Thus, finance departments no longer have to spend valuable resources manually extracting data from different systems and generating reports to support management decisions. This will save time and money spent on IT resources, data management and analysis. Embedded finance solutions can help finance departments make better use of

The Importance of Equity in FintechFinTech has been an exciting sector for the last few years. With its low entry bar, new fintech founders are emerging every day with innovative ideas and solutions. Although the number of FinTech companies is growing fast, we still see a lack of diversity in this sector.
Many startups are founded by men who are either engineers or investors. We see very few women founders who usually lead other people to success. Furthermore, there are very few non-white founders in this industry, especially if we compare it to other tech sectors like eCommerce or AR/VR.
This blog post explains why diversity matters and how you can create a more inclusive environment at your startup for everyone to thrive.
Why Does FinTech Lack Diversity? There are many reasons why FinTech sector is so male-dominated. We can blame it on the education system that teaches boys to be rational, logical thinkers while girls are more enthusiastic and creative.
We can also blame it on the fact that many people think that STEM subjects are better suited for boys. Additionally, many people are convinced that it’s easier for boys to pursue a career in STEM fields.
These negative stereotypes about women and their “natural ability” in STEM fields have led to a lack of female representation in FinTech. It’s not only FinTech that lacks female representation. There are numerous industries that have a skewed gender distribution.
One of the main reasons for such a low number of women in STEM fields is that girls/women don’t see many role models.

Fintech and financial services are words on the lips of everyone in the industry. Everyone is talking about how these emerging technologies are going to change the world. And, everyone is right. Fintech and financial services have come to stay and drive disruption in every industry they enter. To succeed as a fintech founder, you need to build your company with users and communities in mind. Your product will be part of their lives, so you need to include them in its creation from the beginning. In this blog post, we’ll explain why fintech founders need community as much as they need funding and lawyers. Then, we’ll explore why it’s important to build your company with users and communities in mind from day one as a fintech founder. Why Fintech Founders Need CommunityThe meteoric rise of fintech has come with its fair share of challenges. Fintech investors are investing in disruption and they expect high returns. Fintech founders are asked to change the finance industry as we know it with limited resources. This can be both exciting and terrifying. A fintech founder needs to find the right balance between creating a useful product and marketing that product. They need to find the right balance between talking to users and talking to investors. Fintech founders need to be able to manage product development, marketing, sales, and other aspects of the business all by themselves. Communities of users, partners, investors, and journalists can help fintech founders manage these aspects of a business. A strong community can help you reach your target users, expand your product offering, and create brand awareness. Communities can help you launch and improve your marketing campaigns, too. Why You Should Build Your Company With Users And Communities In MindIf you’re looking to grow your fintech business, you need to build your company with users and communities in mind from the very beginning. Here’s why:...

Every adult knows that life can throw unexpected challenges our way at any moment. These challenges range from minor inconveniences (like car trouble) to major catastrophes (like the loss of a job). Unfortunately, most of us are ill-prepared for such curveballs when they strike. That’s because the majority of Americans have little to no emergency savings. A recent survey found that the average American would be unable to cover an unplanned bill costing $500 without selling personal assets or borrowing money. Why Having an Emergency Fund Is So ImportantThere are many reasons why having an emergency fund is important. First, it can ease the financial burden of unexpected events. Second, it can improve your credit score. And third, it can help you stay on track with your long-term financial goals. Here are some examples of how an emergency fund can help you in a financial pinch: - You lose your job - If you lose your job, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. However, the duration and amount of these benefits vary from state to state. Furthermore, they are not meant to be a long-term source of income: maximum benefits last a few months at most. - You have a medical emergency - Medical emergencies are common. You never know when you or a loved one might suffer from a serious illness or injury. Having a health insurance policy can help you get the care you need. However, health insurance alone does not cover all costs associated with medical care. - You incur major home-maintenance costs - Homeowners often encounter unexpected expenses when maintaining their property. These may include roof repair, plumbing issues, and electrical malfunctions. - You have a financial emergency - Financial emergencies occur when you need quick cash to meet a payment or cover an expense when you’re short on funds. - You have a sudden car repair - Cars are expensive, and they break down all the time. If you’re lucky, you’ll need a minor repair that...

The trading world can be a daunting one for those new to it. With so many different terms, strategies, and ways to invest, it’s easy to feel left out or confused. Trading is a complex field with many nuances that take time to learn. However, this doesn’t have to be an obstacle. Anyone can become a trader; you just need the right information and the right advice from the outset. This beginner's guide will teach you everything you need to know about trading in general, as well as provide you with some useful tips on how to get started within this exciting industry. What is Trading?Trading is the act of buying and selling assets with the goal of making a profit. Traders engage in this activity by buying assets in one market, and selling them for a higher price in a different market. There are many different trading assets available such as stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, and even cryptocurrencies. Trading differs from investing in that it is a shorter term process, designed to produce quick results. This means that traders focus on the next few days or weeks, as opposed to the next few years. Trading can be a lucrative way to make a living, but it can also be highly risky. It’s therefore important to have the right information and advice, as well as a solid trading strategy in place before beginning. Types of TradersThere are many different types of traders, each with their own strategies and goals. However, they can generally be categorized into three main types: Arbitrage Traders – These traders look to buy and sell assets in different markets, hoping to make a profit from the discrepancy in prices. They will typically buy in one location, and sell in another to capitalize on the price difference between the two. This is generally a...

How did you find your way into Fintech? I bet it wasn’t a conventional path. Every single leader I interviewed last season fell into this industry because, one way or another, they didn’t fit traditional finance or tech norms. Every one had a unique story. I’m Nicole Casperson, and on this season of Humans of Fintech we’re bringing you stories of diverse leaders who were once outsiders, and how they since found belonging in our industry. If you’ve ever felt on the outside of fintech, you’re no t alone. I want you to hear the human side of fintech: the no-holds-barred truth of what it’s like to find belonging in a space when you don’t feel like you fit in. The leaders I speak to took the path less traveled, and they embody what fintech is supposed to be: An alternative version of finance, powered by a new model that gives equal access to everyone. You’ll hear from leaders at companies like Nasdaq, Facet Wealth, and eToro on how they broke down barriers, learn about the people who helped them find belonging, and break down the step s they took to go from outsider to insider.
If you’ve ever felt isolated, or that your perspe ctive just hasn’t been heard before, Humans of Fintech is here to change that. The journey starts on Wednesday May 4th, with new episodes every Wednesday after that. Make sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
Twitter for investors? Stocktwits is what happens when content meets fintech, helping investors navigate the constant stream of information with its incredible community platform. Built like a social media platform, it allows investors to interact with financial media, investment/trading services, and the kinds of tools that genuinely add value.
Nicole talks to Rishi about building a 5-million strong community and the truth about entrepreneurship in the fintech space.

Home ownership has the power to make or break financial health. Meet Nora, a fintech trailblazer and founder at the forefront of the mortgage revolution. Kate Anthony isn’t just leveling the playing field, she’s building a whole new one with her company Euphoria, bringing out the best in Fintech and changing lives.. Between 2-6 million people in the United States identify as transgender and 34% of those go without official identity that matches their gender. This gap makes it hard to access banking products. That’s where Euphoria steps in with a suite of technologies offering information, support and, crucially, a banking app that helps transgender people achieve their transition-related goals. Nicole and Kate discuss how the app, Bliss, allows people to plan and save. They talk about some of the key financial struggles the trans community face, and how fintech is helping ease some of those burdens and financial stress points. Kate talks about her own struggles on the path to becoming her true, authentic self and how her relationship with technology has played such a major role in her own transition. You’ll also learn more about Euphoria’s services supporting and advising transgendered people and why 80,000 platform users is just the start. Kate is determined to grow her platform and as founders know, aggressive growth comes with increased risk. That’s when you need Sift, supporting you every step of the way preventing fraud and improving growth with dynamic friction.
