Many times in my career, when I went to work on a horse, the owner would warn me that the horse was headshy:
"That's just how she is....she's always been that way....everything I've tried to desensitize her doesn't work."

Even the mildest bit creates tension throughout your horse's entire body.

If you're interested in WHY arthritis happens, have a listen. Because arthritis is not from old age, or wear and tear, or genetics. Those "reasons" are people guessing.
I would be so happy if people knew the truth about this!
Some years ago, I was doing TBT bodywork on a horse and overheard a conversation with a local vet, who was nearby working on another horse.
I was shocked.
This vet was doing a pre-purchase on a 4 year old horse for a jumping prospect.
What was shocking?
The vet telling the owner that the flexions test were poor...but it's very easy to "maintain" the horse on joint injections. And that maintaining with joint injections is normal for all jumpers.
This is so much garbage!
Sure, maybe that is his experience.
But it doesn't have to be "normal" to inject joints for "maintenance." That's once again just treating the symptom without trying to find the cause.
To be fair, vets don't know the cause. But you can know.
We just need to get the joints healthy. And this podcast tells you exactly what to do.

Did you know that horse healing is really being a detective?
Why? Because it's the questions that are important.
If we don't ask enough questions, it's easy to jump to conclusions.
For example, some horses hate having their head touched. Many owners assume their horse was either abused or "ear'd" as a foal.
And that's it. They never try to fix it. They think that's just the way it is, and they're careful not to touch the horse's head.
But if we asked more questions, we could figure out the options for fixing it.

Have you heard of Fecal Water Syndrome (FWS)? Also called Free Fecal Liquid or Water.
It's not fun.
Horses with FWS have normal fecal balls, and then this weird extra water.
So that water splashes everywhere, including the poor horse's legs and tail.

80-90% of Sacroiliac (SI) problems are NOT caused by the sacroiliac joint itself.
If the issue was solely the SI joint, then a simply chiropractic adjustment would fix the problem.
Instead, so many horses are in constant SI pain; getting their SI joints injected which sometimes helps, sometimes does not.
And some of them are even being put down for this issue.
It's so sad because it is very fixable.

Are you using regular table salt? I hope not.
Typical table salts have been heavily processed, bleached, and heated. This high heat changes the chemical structure of sodium chloride, transforming it into an indigestible toxin.
Up to 80 minerals and essential trace minerals are removed. It also contains chemically engineered anti-caking agents called calcium silicate.

Have you ever known a horse who was "ear shy?"
If you have, you probably also heard the explanation, "That horse must have been ear'rd as a foal. Now he hates having his ears touched."
And also, "He's always been that way."
In my experience, 95% of horses who are ear shy, actually have their atlas (poll) out of alignment. This can cause ear sensitivity.

Have you ever had to rehab a horse using "stall rest?"
Horses aren't generally keen on being stuck in a stall all day.
Think if it was months of stall rest....18 months!
That is the longest I have ever heard of, and I absolutely disagree with it.
The owner involved was doing her best. The vet involved was doing his best. But the whole thing sucked.
Why?
Because no one asked WHY the horse wasn't healing.
They just kept waiting for it to happen.
Once we figured out this horse's key problem, then finally he could heal.

During my career as an equine veterinarian & bodyworker, I have heard a few fascinating stories.
This was a good one. It was the first time I heard a horse described as an alligator.

Short version is the horse could not go straight. Trying to make him go straight turned him into an alligator.
This was because he had no center of balance.
And he had no center of balance because his sternum and pelvic symphysis were misaligned.

Today's podcast is about how to avoid antibiotics.
Why would we want to avoid them?
Well, most antibiotics are toxic to the body, especially the kidneys and liver. And antibiotics kill bacteria--both infectious bacteria and healthy intestinal bacteria.
It is best to think about WHY we use antibiotics, and to start thinking about other possibilities.
We will always need antibiotics for when we or our horses are really sick. But we don't need antibiotics for every little thing, and we certainly don't need them as a preventative -- "Just in case an infection shows up".

Rather, coughing is a sign or symptom of a problem. But not a problem itself.
You may find that obvious. However, many of us have inadvertently picked up on fixing symptoms, rather than the underlying cause.
Examples:
Have a cough -- > give cough suppressant
Have a fever -- > get the fever down with aspirin
Have a headache -➝ get rid of headache with tylenol
But what should we do instead of aiming at getting rid of the symptom?
Well that depends on WHY the horse is coughing. We talk about the "sick cough" vs. the "chronic cough" and how to think through those issues.
This idea of taking a moment to think and find what the symptom is telling us is key to Tucker BioKinetic Technique (TBT).

Have you had frustrations with a horse with scar tissue?
Common scenarios:
- Short-strided hind end issues after gelding
- Tendon or ligament adhesions (stuck together) after injury
- Difficult breathing or coughing after bout with 'flu or pneumonia
- Stiff or difficulty bending with chronic diarrhea

The body is always trying to heal itself. AND, it’s always making new cells. Even new cells of bone and cartilage and liver and even brain! This is called “cellular turnover.”
The problem comes when something is preventing that natural healing from occurring.

The hocks are the most common compensation for hind end problems.
But they’re not the most common cause. That award goes to the pelvic symphysis.
It is responsible for lots of issues. A short list is:

- Difficulty with flying changes

Yes, they’re “flight animals” so they can be “reactive”.
But if your horse (or horses you know) are super-spooky, there’s a few things you want to check.
