In other words, NAD+ is crucial for basic functionality of the cell. We all recall from high school biology that mitochondria are the power house of the cell. Well, the Mitochondria rely on the presence of NAD+ to function.
What happens to NAD+ as we age? Current research shows that by middle age, NAD+ production has fallen to almost half of what your cells can make in your youth. This has a particularly heightened effect on cells that require increased levels of energy production such as brain cells and cells found in your cardiovascular system. Current research in anti-aging focuses on pathways to increase the production of NAD+.
