Happy 4th of July! It has been a while, but back with a great episode. On this episode guest biologist Kristie Sitar discusses, Factors Limiting Deer Abundance in the Upper Peninsula, a report she co-authored. She breaks down the data used in looking at the factors that are contributing to a decline in buck harvest in the UP of Michigan. From degraded habitat, hard winters, and predation, each play a role in affecting the deer population. We discuss each in detail in regards to the correlation these factors have with buck harvest. The last day of the 2022 deer season is the first day of the 2023 deer season. There is no time like to present to get prepared for the upcoming deer season. For me this means scouting and completing habitat work. There is no better time to create bedding areas on you hunting ground. I fire up the chain saw and start cutting timber to create opens in the canopy and put cover on the ground. I break down my hunting area and how and where i decided to add additional bedding cover. This episode I bring back the Conservation News desk to discuss a bill banning "Assault weapons" and what it could mean for Michigan hunters. Another South Dakota hunting trip is in the books. This year was my first mule deer hunt. Joining me for this episode is Duane Croel for the second time. Duane is the reason for my interest in hunting South Dakota and hope that we have many more trips in the years to come. For this year I was the solo hunter. Hunting mule deer for the first time in an area I have never hunted before pushed the limits of my skill as a deer hunter. We discuss the the challenges we faced and the lessons we learned. Ultimately if came down to having to call a local friend to take us into a new area that we did not have the confidence going to ourselves and finally harvested my first mule deer buck.

My dad joins me on this episode to do a wrap up of November and the Rut. We break down what our mindset going into the rut was and how we planned on hunting this November. The farm we hunt is set as a rut property were that the bulk of the bucks do not show up until they are in full on rut mode. We discuss what we learned from this November and what we plan to do habitat wise to improve the property and hunting in the future. The rifle opener was good to me as I harvested my first buck of the season. We cover opening day and how the buck almost got away.

This episode we are talking gray wolves. Over the past couple of year there have been a lot of changes in the management of the gray wolf. They were de-listed, re-listed, hunted, trapped, and banned, and protected. Being in the lower peninsula of Michigan I do not interact with wolves directly, though one day I be believe I will, I had questions that are hard to answer by a simple google search. So I reach out to Cody Norton the large carnivore specialist for the Michigan DNR. Cody discusses the history and gives an overview to the wolves within the state. It is within the states best interest to keep the gray wolf off the endangered species list to be able to manage to wolf population within the state. We review some to the key points within the states management plan as well as the surveys conducted to be taken into consideration when it comes to updating that plan. Then I close it out with updates on some efforts that are being made to delist some of the countries wolf populations in areas with sustainable numbers.

This episode we take a look at urban hunting. Brandin Schultes joins the show to discuss his unique experience hunting the extended archery season in and around Detroit Michigan. He spends much of the season hunting the central lower peninsula, both on private an public land. We discuss how he approaches hunting the combination of the properties. Covering the gear he uses throughout year and changes he plans on making for the up coming season. We talk saddle setup, climbing sticks, and the addition of tape such as Stealth Strips by Stealth Outdoors to silence and insulate gear. Then dive into the the urban hunting he does and why he chooses the time he does to go after urban deer and the challenges that come with it. We close out the conversation with talking fishing. Brandin takes full advantage fishing Lake St. Clair targeting the big fish that can come out of it. This episode I discuss that there is no off season for an outdoorsmen. Deer season may be closed but that doesn't mean the work is over. How does the saying go? The last day of the last season is the first day of this season. There is plenty to do in preparation for the up coming whitetail season. Now is a very good time to complete timber work, building bedding areas and providing food and cover to wildlife. It is never a bad time to build a plan for for you food plot or habitat projects. No time like the present when it comes to scouting. With the snow melting soon it is prime time to dive into properties find the sign from the past fall, and if you are lucky enough might even find that white gold of a shed. The winter and spring months provide a great opportunity to get out and do other activities as well. From fishing, hiking, skiing, snow shoeing, small game, or whatever gets you in the outdoors.

This episode I'm joined by deer biologist Ashley Autenrieth with the Michigan DNR to discuss the topics of deer baiting and the use of supplement in winter. We discuss the issues with deer baiting and why the state no longer allows it for most of the state. Then we move on to winter feeding. Ashley covers why supplement feeding is not allowed in Michigan and why it is not recommended through most of the country. Then we dive into the resent change with the state moving to a universal antlerless tag. We discuss the reasoning behind that decision and address some of the concerns to the number of tags available.

Part Two of the conversation with my dad. On this episode we discuss some of the game regulations for the state and what our thoughts are on the impact they will have going forward. We also look back at how over harvest has impacted wildlife numbers today and how todays hunters and fishermen are more conscious about the game animals they harvest. On this episode I dive into My muzzleloader hunt from the past week. I did end up harvesting the biggest doe to date. There were several thing that came together to make it happen. However there were also several thing that went wrong that could have lead to a completely different outcome. I give the play by play of the evening and review what I did and my thought process throughout the hunt.
The Rut is over the season is nearing the end. If you are like me and still have tags in your pocket it is easy to start thinking you are about to eat some tag soup. Even though the quote best hunting is behind us, it doesn't mean it is time to throw in the towel. The last season does being tough challenges but it also brings unique opportunities to hunt in new ways and to capitalize on deer patterns as food become king. In this episode I discuss the potential to hunt the second rut, and what it means if you see rutting activity in December. Finishing out with one of my favorite ways to hunting in the late season. That is tracking. With fresh snow falling on almost a daily basis, tracking is a great way to hunt and scout at the same time. Late season is hard one to hunt. After days and weeks in the woods, feeling burned out and not having the drive to get out in the cold for yet another long sit in the cold, it can be hard to get out there. Just remember these are the last few weeks and it will be over before we know it. So throw on an extra layer, slide on the wool socks, grab some hand warmers and get out there and get after it.

What can I say. South Dakota Hunting is the stuff dreams are made of. This trip was four years in the making. Covid-19 postpone the trip by a year and threaten to not allow the trip to happen at all. On this episode I give an update on my season so far. A lot of effort has gone into achieving my goal of harvesting a public land buck. So far I am empty handed. There have been several lows mixed with some highs. Thinking back on the mistakes I have made as well as build on what has gone right. The Rut is upon us and it is time to capitalize. I run through my thought process and my plan heading into the next part of the season.

This week I go into my journey doing land management. Starting out I knew nothing when it came to food plots and habitat improvement. Over the years I made mistakes and improved. There is a right way to do it but I found there are wrong ways and I share what I have learn in hope to help others avoid pitfalls
You are all done scouting potential public land spots and found some good areas. Next comes the process of figuring a hunt plan to allow you to hunt those locations. This episode I run through my thought process when I have found a spot on public land in ways I will approach to hunt those areas. Cover the importance of not putting all your eggs in one basket to find someone else is hunting the same spot you wanted and not have not plan in place on where to hunt now. If you haven't already it is time to dust off the bow and time to start getting in reps. Now is also the time to start looking into scouting new areas.
