This podcast is dedicated to all things related to the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University!
When an ad for OSU’s Veterans Entrepreneurship Program appeared on retired staff sergeant Mike Burns' Facebook feed, the wounded warrior saw it as an answered prayer. Despite his struggles stemming from battlefield injuries, including an above-the-knee amputation and a traumatic brain injury, Burns knew the VEP would give him the tools to help other veterans just like himself.
It did that and more. Burns used the skills he learned at VEP to establish a nonprofit that now helps veterans across 47 states – Operation Pay it Forward.
Dean Jim Payne and Stephen Howard from Spears Business sat down with Burns and Chad Mills, director of the Riata Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, to explore how the Riata Center’s intensive 8-day VEP bootcamp transforms military heroes into entrepreneurs through rigorous training from expert business leaders.

Two decades of exploring employment law has turned Spears Business faculty member Griffin Pivateau into a go-to expert for the media, academic journals and the court system. How much of an expert? In April, the FTC cited Pivateau’s work in its final rule banning noncompete clauses nationwide. Welcome back to the Buzz on Business! Ken Eastman, Dean of Spears School of Business and our new co-host Addison Price sit down to discuss some very important topics. Is cereal a soup? What Stillwater Mexican restaurant is the best? What's so great about getting a business degree? All this and more on the first episode of the semester on the Buzz on Business!
In this addition on the Buzz on Business, we’re honored to have Addison Price joining us today. Addison is a senior marketing major from Edmond, Oklahoma, who will be graduating in December. When she arrived at OSU as a freshman in August 2017, Addison’s plan was to graduate in four years, which would have been this month. But those plans changed after her sophomore year when she was crowned Miss Oklahoma in 2019 and then followed that up by finishing as third runner-up in the Miss America Pageant. She paused her education for a year while fulfilling her obligations as Miss Oklahoma. She returned to OSU and the Spears School of Business in the summer of 2020 while becoming the first person ever to serve a second year as Miss Oklahoma when the pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s pageant. Her two-year reign as Miss Oklahoma will come to an end in June after hundreds of virtual speaking engagements across the state. I hope you enjoy my visit with Addison as much as I did.

In this edition, Dean Ken Eastman chats with Dr. Brij Thapa, the new head of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Brij takes over leadership of the HTM program following 20 years as a faculty member at the University of Florida’s Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. Along with his extensive research experience, he also directed the Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute at the University of Florida, and served as the department's program leader and coordinator for graduate & undergraduate programs. We’re pleased that he has joined us to lead the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and joins the podcast as we learn about his vision for the school.
