In this podcast, we will be joined by a number of different hosts and guests from various walks of life - all with a range of passions focused around the sea. We also explore well being for individuals, for our communities and the sea itself through our interaction with this life giving natural resource - along with much, much more. Manchán Magan talks to Peter O'Brien about his relationship with the sea, his project, Sea Tamagotchi, which explores the hundreds of Irish words for sea and sea life and the transformation times we live in and how the sea is part of that.
Manchán has written books on his travels in Africa, India and South America and two novels. He writes regularly for The Irish Times, presents The Almanac of Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1 and reports on travel for various radio programmes. He has presented dozens of documentaries on issues of world culture for TG4, RTÉ & Travel Channel. His book Thirty-Two Words For Field explores the insights the Irish language offers into the landscape, psyche and heritage of Ireland. www.manchan.com
In this episode Peter O'Brien talks to the wonderful Easkey Britton about her life, her incredible surfing career and a deep dive into her passionate love for the ocean, its life giving force and what we need to do to protect it. Easkey's empathetic love and concern for the health of our sea and for humans is truly touching and it was an honour to hear her thoughts.
Easkey is the first Irish woman to be nominated for the Global WSL Big Wave Awards but there’s more to Easkey than surfing. It is her intellect and her quest to learn and create change in an often unfair world that really defines her. A scientist, academic and social activist, with a PhD in Environment and Society, Easkey is always one to look in places others aren’t for the answers to difficult questions. Her curiosity and passion for fairness and gender equality are the qualities that make her who she truly is as a person.
