In this episode, Senyo speaks with Avril, a social development professional with over two decades of experience spanning education, maternal and child health, child protection, behavioral change communication, and volunteering for development. Avril, who is currently the Country Lead for the Jacobs Foundation in Ghana, discusses how community engagement and participation are crucial to improving school effectiveness. She makes a case for enabling community stakeholders to take responsibility for school effectiveness by identifying roadblocks to effective teaching and learning. Riding on the believe that education transformation begins at the grassroots level, this approach allows communities to assess their current learning environments, envision their desired outcomes, and be informed by evidence to implement projects that drive lasting improvements in learning outcomes. Based in Ethiopia, the Coalition on Media and Education for Development Africa Forum (CAFOR) is a non-profit under the African Union. It comprises of various organisations, experts and individuals who are committed to ensuring that education systems in Africa are relevant to young Africans. Brian shares key flagship projects that CAFOR runs across Africa, including the Africa Digital Library, the TVET Digital Library, Teacher Training Using an AI Chatbox on WhatsApp, and the African Learning Platform, among others. The African TVET Library, for example, is the first library in Africa to harness the best learning materials from over 209 TVET organisations across Africa into a digital library to accelerate learning.

In this episode, we discuss corporal punishment in schools with Robert Omwa from Kenya. Robert is a certified positive discipline coach and teacher. He was caned in school by his teachers and used to cane his pupils as a teacher, until something happened! He now advocates for an end to corporal punishment in schools in Africa, reaching over 10,000 teachers with his message and training and receiving a state award (Head of School Commendation) from former president Uhuru Kenyatta for his advocacy work.
