What is communication? - The exchange of information

  1. What kind of information are you exchanging?

  2. Means of sharing information

  3. How are you sharing information?

  4. ● What is wisdom?

○ The application of experience, knowledge, and good judgement

○ Another way to say it: wisdom is using history to influence the future * ● Why should we be wise with our communication?

○ The information shared is important

○ The way it is shared is important (FedEx vs. DHL example) * ● Intentional in all forms of communication

○ Depending on the information being exchanged, the method used for conveyance really matters (Words of affirmation vs. a serious personnel issue)

What does the Bible have to say about wise communication?

  1. Proverbs 17:27-28 Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding (We show our knowledge, or lack thereof, with how much restraint we have in our words)
  2. Proverbs 18:13 If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and his shame (Wisdom is perspective, seeing other people’s viewpoints before coming to your own conclusions)
  3. James 1:19 Know this...be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger (You don’t get a do over for handling a situation poorly)
  4. Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person (This boils down to preaching to connect)
  5. Matthew 12:34 From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (our beliefs influence our words)

So how can we apply the concept of wise communication in our professional lives?

  1. Take it out on a practice run firstWrite down or record what you want to say to yourself before sharing it with others

This gives you the chance to hear/read your words and adjust as necessary 2. Think about your audience before communicatingSee things from their point of view, make sure what you are sharing will be accepted in the way it is meant to be shared

Walk through the potential outcomes of what you are saying to the group you are saying it to 3. Identify the best mode of communicationFigure out the best way to share your information (in person, phone, email, etc)

Use the content of what is being shared to identify the best approach to communicating with your audience

Final Thoughts

  1. Who can give you a brutally honest assessment of your current communication abilities?
  2. Who in your circle of influence needs you to help them with their communication?
  3. Which form of communication is your strongest? Which is your weakest?

Remember that as a leader, someone is always watching your example, so make it one you can be proud of

What is consistency?

  • Conformity in the application of something (this can be viewed in a practical way as long term behaviors that elicits trust)
  • Cool secondary definition: consistency come from the Latin consistentia, meaning “to stand firm”

What does consistency look like?

  • Repetition of the same or similar behaviors
  • The probability that others can accurately estimate how you will respond to a situation

Why lead with consistency

  • A consistent behavior leads to trust with your team
  • The level of trust that you have with your team is proportional to the level of influence you can have with them
  • Low trust = low influence / high trust = high influence
  • Being consistent set the example for your team that, while at times one needs to branch out from the norm, most of the time decisions need to be made in a consistent behavior

How to be consistent and innovative

  • Make decisions (and thus behaviors) in alignment with your stated values and/or the vision of the organization
  • Not only does this lend to you as the leader being more consistent, it sets a road map for how your team can be more consistent in their own behaviors too.

  • Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Jesus is an everlasting symbol of choosing the right things to align with and sticking with them)

  • Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might (Be intentional with your decisions and by extension, your behaviors. This sets the tone with your team)
  • Philippians 1:7 Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ (what a power verse on what our convictions (or beliefs) should say about us)
  • James 1:4 And let steadfastness have its full affect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing (be consistent in your development and growth, ever striving to be the person God made you to be)

So how can we apply the concept of being a consistent leader in our professional lives?

1. Be deliberate and intentional with the values and vision you have set

This helps to ensure we can be consistent in our decisions if they are made in line with our values and vision

Your team may not agree with your decisions, but should at the very least understand where they come from

2. Encourage your team to develop their own values to align with

This helps them to have a great sense of control and ownership, leading to the benefits of more autonomy in the workplace

Establishing individual values helps the other members of the team appreciate how our differences can make us a better team

3. Don’t let short term circumstances derail your long term consistency

Allowing this will erode the trust you have inbuilt with your team, hindering future efforts to build influence

Sticking to your carefully chosen values shows your team they can trust you to make the right decisions despite the short term consequences

Final Thoughts

  1. Being totally honest, would others say you are a consistent leader?
  2. What is something you can do this week to be more of a consistent leader?
  3. Who on your team needs your help in becoming more consistent in their own leadership behavior?

Podcast #18 - Contentment vs Complacency

Hello and welcome to another episode of The King’s Business, a podcast designed to help business leaders apply biblical principles in both their personal and professional lives. I want to thank you for joining us today and it is my hope that you will walk away with added wisdom to your life so you can go into the world and be a positive influence on others by doing the King’s business.

So how can we apply the concept of being a content, not complacent in our professional lives?

1. Be ambitious, but celebrate the victories along the way

Nothing burns out a team more than the “carrot” that never comes

Good work is part of the process, it is happening the whole time the team is striving for a vision/goal. Don’t wait until the end to celebrate and acknowledge it

2. Find something transcendent to believe in

When what you believe in is not shaken by the uncertainties of life, you are better able to be content in any situation

Believe in something that won’t let you down, this is a must for leading a content life

3. Don’t let circumstances breed a culture of complacency

Everyone has circumstances, but we get to choose to stay in them or strive for something better

Celebrate victories relative your own team’s situation (only run your race)

Final Thoughts

  1. What victories can you celebrate with your team this week?
  2. Is your identity safe from the uncertainties of the world?

  1. What is focus?

  2. The center of interest or activity

  3. The state of having or producing clear visual definition

  4. Center of interest or activity

  5. What are you spending your time on?

  6. Mostly strengths
  7. Some time on learning new skills
  8. Very little time on weaknesses (just enough to make them neutral and not a detriment)

  9. Producing clear visual definition

  10. Is your vision clear for what you want to accomplish?

  11. You can never get back time, so be intentional with what you spend it on

  12. As the leader, do others see your vision as clearly as you do?

  13. You can’t tell the right story if everyone is not on the right page

How can we apply the concept of being a focused leader in our professional lives?

1. Spend 70% of your time growing your strengths

  • Strengths are things we are naturally good at and usually enjoy doing
  • Our strengths are the talents God has invested in us, and it is our job to do our best to grow that investment

2. Spend 25% of your time learning new skills

  • Look for skills that could complement your strengths
  • Learning new skills can illuminate strengths you didn’t know you had

3. Spend 5% of your time on your weaknesses

  • Weaknesses rarely become strengths, so it's best to see them in that light
  • While weaknesses probably won’t become strengths, they can be made into neutrals so they are not a detriment to you

Final Thoughts

  1. When was the last time you wrote down your strengths?
  2. What is a new skill you could learn that will complement one of your strengths?
  3. What is a step you could take this week to turn a negative into a neutral?

Hello and welcome to another episode of The King’s Business, a podcast designed to help business leaders apply biblical principles in both their personal and professional lives. I want to thank you for joining us today and it is my hope that you will walk away with added wisdom to your life so you can go into the world and be a positive influence on others by doing the King’s business.

What does the Bible tell us about worry?

  1. Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. (The Bible knew the value of positive thought replacement millenia before psychologists did)
  2. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (Scripture is telling us to place our efforts with our highest priorities)
  3. Matthew 6:27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? (This verse speaks to how we are to use worry in our lives)
  4. Hebrews 13:16 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (When your identity is in Christ, everything else becomes less scary and falls into line)
  5. Matthew 6:34 So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Today is the only thing we have some control over, so don’t waste your energies worrying about tomorrow)

So how can we apply the concept of handling worry in our professional lives?

1. We must clearly articulate the worries on our mind

  • In order for us to test the validity of our worries, we first must identify them (a good habit is to write them down, this limits them, making them more manageable)
  • An identified worry can the be examined

2. We must wisely divide worries into the categories of useful and useless

  • Useful worries need to be converted into action plans that have a process and a way to measure their effectiveness (success or failure)
  • Useless worries need to be ignored (what you feed is what will grow)

3. We need to show our teams and followers how to successfully handle worry

  • This can mean being candid with your team about things you have been worrying about (be wise with whom you share this vulnerability with)
  • Followers that know how to effectively handle worry make better decisions both personally and professionally (both of which will benefit the organization)

Final Thoughts

  1. How will you catalog your worries on a regular basis?
  2. How will you act on both useful and useless worries?
  3. How can you model to your teams and followers how to effectively handle our daily worries?

Thank you for joining us this week, and remember, as followers of Christ, we are called to glorify God in our actions, to grow His kingdom through our example, to be a positive influence on others by doing the King’s business. Thank you and have a great week!

  1. We must wisely identify what things are important to usYou cannot rank items if you have not assigned a value to them

Make sure the things you have identified as important align with your values 2. We must protect our time relentlesslyTime is one of the only things you cannot buy more of or get back if misused

You have to say “no” to something good so you can say “yes” to something great 3. We need to consistently live out our priorities in our actions and decisionsWith time, it should become obvious to those around us what things we have identified as important

When we as leaders prioritize correctly, we are clearing a trail for our followers/team to do the same (no one ever regrets not spending more time at work on their deathbed)

Final Thoughts

  1. What things are important to you?
  2. What recurring obligations do you need to say “no” to?
  3. Who in your workplace needs to see you correctly prioritize the important things in your life?
