Sugar is the Devil. In the 80's and 90's we were told it was dietary fat, but now we know differently. Sugar is one of the most addictive substances on earth. So how do you break up with it?
Go on, admit it, you need to break up with sugar. Cam and Amelia have had love affairs with sugar, so you aren't alone. In this episode, we talk about all kinds of sugar and how to recognize them. I know breaking up with sugar feels like losing your best friend, but you can do it!
02:23 Spouse, gummy worms, sugar addiction, bad.
05:09 No longer need you. Forget you.
08:12 Past life teaching 1st grade, moon+sugar=amped kids, stress control.

Tracking nutrition may feel like a daunting, laborious task, but it will provide value if you are aiming for particular health goals.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia unpack the what and how of nutritional tracking. You can start small, with just daily protein. Then, if needed, you can expand your tracking to all macro nutrients (fat and carbs). There are several apps that will lend a hand.
It can be an eye-opening experience to track your nutrition. It lets you know what you are really consuming but be honest with yourself. If you don't accurately track, you can't trust the results.
01:59 Tracking diet helps understand what's missing.
04:52 Food diary: start small, track daily protein.
09:24 Displaying information with circles, setting individual goals.
10:12 Tracking with a coach is fantastic and accurate.
13:05 Don't let numbers control your life.
19:00 Collagen and protein powder as supplements in moderation.
22:45 Eating colorful fruits and veggies provides healthy carbs.
24:22 Misconception about nutrient-less carbs, organic corn chips top choice.
26:49 Tracking biofeedback, blood sugar hacks, food order.

cToday we're talking about redefining Thanksgiving Traditions in midlife. This may be especially relevant if your tradition will necessarily change due to a change in status. This could be due to divorce, loss of a parent, being newly empty-nested or simply that you want to try something new!
Traditions are great, until they're not. I think sometimes we fail to recognize this. We expect the 'Norman Rockwell' painting during the Holidays, when in fact, that rarely happens; it's a complete illusion!
We want you to embrace new traditions. Take what you enjoyed from past traditions and let go of the rest. Expectations can be joy-killers.
Cam and Amelia give you a humorous, heart-warming look at what creating new traditions can look like.
02:10 Traditions: Paternal grandparents, husband, separate opinions.
04:45 Large family gathering without alcohol and games.
07:29 Family traditions can change as kids grow.
11:34 Holiday plans with family may change, adapting graciously.
13:51 Thanksgiving with kids: hike, breakfast, brewery, fun.
18:11 My daughter went, relatives can be stressful.
19:58 Father uncomfortable on holidays, no need to entertain.
23:12 Little considerations during the holidays for hosts.

Most of us in Midlife are no stranger to loss. At some point in our lives, we've experienced the loss of a grandparent or older family member. But what about other losses? The loss of a good friend, the loss of a career, or the loss of our health can all throw us for a loop.
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Cam's sweet friend Debby, who was a co-teacher with Cam for many years. This episode is both touching and comforting as we explore different types of loss, but also ways of coping. This can be through social networks, supplements, and sticking to our 'minimums' through times of grief and stress.
We hope this episode comforts you and informs you, and if it resonates, please like and share.

Greetings Midlifers! Welcome to this sobering (pun intended) episode of the midlife mommas. Colleen's story may resonate with you...in parts or in it's entirely. We are SO excited to have her on the show!
Colleen's story is not an unusual one. She talks about drinking in the context that it's most familiar, in casual and social settings. Many of us have used alcohol to 'take the edge off'. But when is it too much? How is alcohol affecting your health? Your decision making? Your sleep? Your mental health?
I know you're going to love Colleen as much as we do!
00:02:43 Withdrawal effects, ignorance, and alcohol addiction.
00:04:06 Alcohol's impact on adulthood and menopause.
00:06:53 Hiding alcohol addiction with clever deception.
00:11:05 AA philosophy: brain programmed, belief control, not science; pursue happiness, not sobriety.
00:14:25 Dopamine depletion leads to lightweight alcohol effects.
00:19:32 Delaying start time, controlling wine consumption.
00:22:28 Enjoy wine mindfully, not unconsciously drinking.
00:25:59 Tools for repairing dopamine levels after substance abuse.
00:29:21 Embrace authenticity, be powerful, live authentically.
00:30:38 Admitting not okay, being seen, powerful.
00:34:13 Fixed mindset: "I'm an alcoholic and can't control myself."
Growth mindset: Learn to change thoughts & neuroplasticity.

This week we're talking about Fall foods! There's lots to love about Fall foods: lettuces, bitter greens, winter squash, and root vegetables. Fall and winter foods tend to be richer and more slowly cooked, so savor the preparation and the flavor.
But there are some pitfalls too. Pumpkin spice latte anyone? We cover these too and give you some tips to remain healthy and strong as the days get shorter.
00:01:34 I love fall foods, like bitter greens and winter squash.
00:05:46 Hard sell: bitter greens, healthy, vitamin c, antioxidants, try recipes.

00:15:13 Complex winter meals; simple summer salads.

00:22:26 "Eating order affects digestion and glucose levels."
00:25:02 Alcohol-free options: Seltzer water, Seedlip elixir.

00:30:57 Health store sells bones, lengthy but worth it.
Amelia's bone broth
Place 2-3 bones (I use beed bones from my daughter's farm) in a crockpot or instant pot
Add 6-8 cups water
Add desired herbs such as rosemary or thyme sprigs
Add 1-2 tsp salt (optional)
Cook on low heat for 10 hours.
Remove from heat; put in glass jars and strain fat with cheesecloth or using a coffee filter. Alternatively, refrigerate and skim solid fat off the top.

BOOM! I wish I could do sound effects, but I can't. We're here today to talk about atomic habits. The basis for this talk is James Clear's bestselling book by the same name. Also, James Clear is a guest on Brene Brown's podcast on Spotify - that's also a great listen.
Anyhoo...what are atomic habits, and why do we need them?
Have you ever noticed that when you make lofty goals (we used to call them BHAGs in the 1990's), that you never quite get there? That's because biting off a huge chunk of behavior change at one time almost always leads to failure. What you need is a system. Tiny increments of change add up to BIG change over time.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia distill the principles of creating or recreating your systems to set you up for success. Consistency over intensity is the key. We give you the four things that build a habit, and we give you the tools to unwind a habit as well.

We know that we need to pay closer attention to rest and sleep in midlife, but what is the difference between rest and sleep? I've found that even when I'm getting enough
sleep, I may not be getting enough rest. For me that manifests in increased crankiness and a lesser ability to cope with day-to-day stresses. For you, this may look differently.

In this episode of the Midlife Mommas, Cam and Amelia explore Being Single in Midlife. Cam has some personal experience here, but we both know plenty of single gals in midlife. Have you ever heard the phrase, "The days are long but the years are short"?
This feels especially true in midlife. As we embrace our midlife awakening, we must live intentionally and realize that time is a gift. While we can't create more time, we can make the most of the time we DO have by living fully.
In this episode of the Midlife Mommas, we get a little philosophical about time. We are still our funny selves, we dive into the deep meaning of time and explore topics like:
00:02:33 Time expands and contracts, but it's fleeting.
00:05:19 Agreeing, limited time, Hawaii, volcanic lava.
00:07:15 "Do you have a minute? Time matters."
00:12:23 Cam taught me to value sleep.
00:16:12 Limit unhealthy relationships, take back your power.
00:18:37 "Managing time and setting weekly goals intentionally."
00:20:43 Recognizing the importance of reaching out to others.
00:25:23 Learned to say no, prioritize self-care.

Hormonal change is a popular topic among peri-menopausal and menopausal women. Many of us were far less prepared for these changes than we were for the 'younger sister' of hormonal changes - puberty. But in truth, these phases of life, bookending our reproductive years, share a lot of similarities.

Cam and Amelia love to talk about relationships. We are all about maintaining healthy boundaries & relationships. One special relationship that comes into play in midlife is being an in-law. Some of you might have been dreaming of this since your children were little kids, but not me. It kinda snuck up on me. But being an in-law is both amazing and challenging. It's a little bit like adopting a grownup. Our children choose their spouses, but their (new) spouses inherit a whole new family.
We explore this new relationship in this episode of The Midlife Mommas. Whether you're a new in-law, have been an in-law for a while, or are just beginning to consider this option, we hope you find some insight here. And this isn't just for mothers-in-law, if you're married, you're an in-law!!
Some things to consider:
As always, this is a fun & insightful message. Thanks for joining us on this ride!

1, and 2, and 3, and 4...did you ever count like that when you did sit-ups? I did and I can tell you that not only was it NOT fun, but it was not effective. What we know now, is that your core is NOT just your 6-pack muscles. The core encompasses a whole collection of muscles surrounding...well, your CORE. These include big muscles of the back, those along the spine, as well as the abdominal muscles and 'corset' muscles that run down the sides of your midsection.
WHY is it important to have a STRONG CORE?
So if your gym class sit-ups are ineffective, how exactly do we strengthen our core?
In this episode of the Midlife Mommas we talk about ALL things CORE, including our favorite core strengthening movements.
Having a strong core helps to ensure longevity, and that's what we're about at the Midlife Mommas!

Boy, we should NOT sing! Ha! Ha! But we're on the brink of summertime and that is reason to SING!
Most of us think of running through sprinklers, going to the beach, the smell of freshly cut grass and the sounds of children in summer. But summer is also time of tremendous bounty of fresh foods! So what do we eat in the summertime? Generally, we think of cooling foods, foods with high water content and foods we can eat outside during summer. This could be anything from watermelon, to summer squash, to crispy lettuces, to crunchy cucumbers.
In this episode of the Midlife Mommas we talk about OUR favorites summertime foods. We discuss how we discover new ways to prepare old favorites, and how to stretch a meal (a favorite topic for Amelia and Cam).

I'm strong to the 'finich', cause I eats me spinach...or so says Popeye. But the real reason we get strong is because we WORK for it. Today's episode is all about building those biceps and the rest of the upper body.
Upper body strength is important for many reasons, not the least of which is proper postural alignment. In midlife, we want to be able to perform our normal daily tasks, such as carrying groceries and climbing stairs, and this is easier when you strength train.
Women sometimes avoid upper body strength training for fear that they will 'bulk up', but we know that without massive doses of testosterone, this isn't going to happen. What we do want to avoid is the back-of-the-arm flab that many women experience once their estrogen declines.
Join us for this practical and helpful discussion on upper body strength.

Is righteous indignation your favorite negative emotion?
Do you get a charge when you can triangulate against a 3rd party?
Is it hard for you to relate to people when their values and priorities are different from yours?
We all have a sense of self and "other". But when that gets in the way of showing empathy and kindness, we have a problem. Sometimes insecurity, lack of confidence, or lack of control makes us feel vulnerable and unsafe and we lash out at others.
HOW do we get past these negative emotions?? In this episode, Cam and Amelia talk about processing these negative emotions, which can manifest as anger, shame, or bitterness and resentment.
We want you to feel empowered to make changes, to feel gratitude and consider carefully, whose opinion you value. This means that you won't depend on others for validation and conversely, you won't be angry or disappointed when they disagree with you.
Take charge of your life, your emotions and by all means, TAKE YOUR THOUGHTS TO COURT!

This episode was inspired by a marriage retreat that Cam went on. It inspired great conversation between us. Cam, being a relative newlywed and Amelia, married 30+ years to her childhood sweetheart. I don't have time for that!
How often have you said that?
It's true; we are all busy; there are a million things to do and there are only 24 hours in the day.
I've seen a saying that reads, "If you don't have time to tend to your health; your ill-health will rob you of both TIME and HEALTH....or something like that; you get the picture.
In this episode of the Midlife Mommas, Cam and Amelia discuss this important topic. We discuss HOW to make HEALTH a PRIORITY. We encourage you to embrace what you love; we teach you how to overcome limitations and we give you some well-informed DO's and DON'T'S so you can make the most of your health and wellness journey.

Who thinks getting out of your comfort zone is easy? fun? necessary?
In this episode of the Midlife Mommas, Cam and Amelia discuss Getting out of Your Comfort Zone. If you've been listening to us for very long, you know that we love to get out of our comfort zones....or do we??
A comfort zone is just that, comfortable. But it can also be limiting. If you're staying in your comfort zone, then you are stagnant, and may be getting bored, and possibly bitter or resentful.
We want you to broaden your horizons...take small leaps of faith...believe in yourself.
Getting out of your comfort zone helps you learn, expands your "gray matter" and leads to longevity and joy!

Cam and Amelia have both experimented recently with "taking a break" from alcohol.
We know many things about alcohol:
Some "facts" however, are questionable. We've been told for years that red wine is good for the heart - based on the presence of resveratrol, an anti-oxidant. But we also know that alcohol is a neurotoxin. So do the benefits outweigh the harms?
In this episode, Cam and Amelia give their takes on alcohol consumption and the results of our experimentation with cutting back or cutting it out. I don't think you'll be surprised by our findings.
This is a loaded subject; drinking alcohol is certainly an individual choice. Take what you hear here, and way the options for yourself!

What is a controversial nutrient?
Today we are talking about dairy and soy. Many people avoid these 2 nutrients for various reasons. Cam and Amelia share their views on these 2 controversial nutrients. We give you "the good, the bad and the ugly" about both. We give you alternatives if you avoid these products.
If you're curious about soy and dairy this is the episode for you. Both are ample sources of protein, which we know in midlife, is very important. But certain sources of dairy and soy are fraught with issues.
We hope you learn something new from this talk on dairy and soy.

Cam and I have both worked with clients who have used food for something other than nourishing their bodies. Heck, we've done it ourselves. But what do we do when we realize that this is happening? How do we stop using food as comfort and coping?
This is hard. Let's face it. Food is a LEGAL DRUG. What complicates things even more is the fact that that we NEED food to survive, so it's easy to overlook the ugly truth that we USE food for unhealthy purposes.
In this episode, we explore this topic. We talk about:
While this topic seems obvious enough, it's really hard to break this habit. Join us on the journey of breaking the cycle of emotional eating.

Protein, it's a constant battle, isn't it? How long have we been preaching, "Eat more protein!"? Protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle and we know that in midlife, we have to actively and intentionally build muscle. Even Cam and Amelia aren't immune to the struggle.
This episode is a reminder of how important protein is. Protein packs a measly 4 calories per gram and is made of up of amino acids. If you are NOT prioritizing protein, chances are your bone density is suffering, you feel hungrier and less satisfied, and you may be packing on unwanted pounds.

Are you embarrassed to ask for help? Are you afraid you're going to impose on someone else? Or is asking for help second nature to you?
Women are born nurturers. This often manifests in a need to be all things to all people. But what happens when we get overwhelmed? Cam often tells us, "You can't give if your cup is empty." But how do we ask for help?
This is a fun discussion between friends as we explore the reasons why so many women struggle with asking for help. We contemplate generational as well as geographical differences that make this true. We talk about what happens when we don't ask for help and the tremendous benefits when we DO.
Asking for help is a BOUNDARY. Let that one sink in. I'll bet you want to know why we say this, Well, join us and find out. This is real mental-health inventory check.

Adapto-WHAT?
Many people may not know about adaptogens. They are supplements that adapt to what you need. We most often think of them in relation to managing stress. Taking adaptogens, such as Holy Basil, Rhodiola and Ashwagandha help your body manage stress. They can give you energy when you are lagging, improve your mental acuity and most of all, help calm your nervous system. Don't worry, these aren't what your grandmother called "nerve pills". Adaptogens are made from herbs and plants found in nature that have a therapeutic effect. No "drugs" here.
Join us for an in-depth talk about what adaptogens are and how they function individually and synergistically to create a greater sense of calm and well-being. We talk about what we are currently using and what has helped us in the past.

Ugh. I feel awful!
What's a hangover? Foggy brain, headache, stomach discomfort, sweating. Sounds a lot like menopause, doesn't it?
We are talking about hangovers today, and not just the kind that comes from over-indulgence in alcohol. There are several kinds of hangovers.
Hydration helps all of these types of hangovers, but there are many causes and cures for all of these. This is an interesting talk about all these challenging situations that can cause us to feel badly. We hope you enjoy this one!

Work. Ugh. For some it's a necessary evil; for others it's their life's passion.
We all have different attitudes about work. In this episode, we explore these attitudes, and how they affect midlife. Whether you have worked for the same company for 30 years, or you are a self-made entrepreneur, work affects your daily life. Even if you are not paid for the work you do, your contributions are still valuable.
Here are some thought-provoking questions:

Technology is a double-edged sword. It's a tremendous help (remember life without GPS?) but it can also be a source of frustration or a tremendous time-suck.
What's your attitude about technology?
In this episode, Cam and Amelia explore their attitudes about tech and how to retain a healthy relationship with it. We talk about how our experience is different from our children (Millennials) and how it's different from that of our parents. Finally, we give you tips about how to manage your relationship with technology.

Note: This episode was inspired by one of our fabulous listeners!
Have you ever avoided an action, a person or a task because you were afraid? I think all of us do this once in a while. The truth of the matters is that we all are afraid of something. But is fear holding you back from living your best life?
There are folks that like zero change. They are completely content eating the same dinner every Monday night, going on the same date every Saturday and watching the same shows every week. But for many of us, routine becomes mundane and we long to make a change, but we're afraid. This episode is for those people. We explore what it looks like to embrace change and accept the good, the bad and the ugly that comes with it. We share our stories and ponder, 'What happens next?' We hope that this inspires you to explore your feelings about uncertainty and maybe, just maybe helps you over come the fear to take the next step!

Cardio: cardiovascular exercise. We've heard it our whole adult lives: "Get your Cardio in!" In the 1980's and 90's, we cardioed ourselves to death. Whether Jane Fonda-ing, running or crossfitting, we were all in for ALL of it! In fact, truth be told, many of us overdid it. We didn't completely understand the value of strength training while we were enjoying those endorphin-crazed workouts.
But things are different in midlife. While we still need movement to work our heart muscle, it doesn't have to be at quite the intensity nor the frequency that we did it in our 20's and 30's.
Join us for this really valuable talk on what 'cardio' should look like in midlife. We give you the truth about what excessive cardio exercise does to your hormones, your sleep and your insulin response. We give you recommendations on what a healthy dose of cardio looks like and some suggestions on how to do it. We hope that you enjoy this episode!

If you're like us, sleep is your #1 priority for better health! This episode is meant to help you achieve it.
There are health consequences to disrupted sleep, aka circadian rhythm. These include a greater risk of sleep disorders, obesity, depression, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. By correcting sleep disturbances, you can correct a whole host of other health problems. The problem is that in midlife, when our hormones are going haywire, we except poor sleep as part of the aging process. Well that simply doesn't have to be your reality.
We give you plenty of tips to achieve better sleep. Every body is different, so some of these may work for you, but some may not. Be an experiment of one!

If you've made it to midlife, then you feel like you've made some sacrifices. Believe us, we know!
This episode is all about sacrifice. As women, it's kind of the norm to sacrifice, right? What is at the heart of this belief? Societal expectations? Family norms and dynamics? Pressure on ourselves to perform?
Do women sacrifice more than men?Cam and Amelia take a hard look at the "obligatory" things we do. We ask ourselves some hard questions and share the answers with you. We hope you enjoy this introspective episode as we talk about finding joy but also finding boundaries.
Stay tuned as we explore generational difference between baby-boomers, Gen X'ers and Millennials. This was a fun topic to discuss and we hope you like it too!

This time of year, it might feel difficult to stay motivated to do anything besides eat, shop and sleep. But the Midlife Mommas is here to help by showing you the HOW and the WHY on motivation. We all promise to do better, but sometimes it's to execute.
Let's be clear. Motivation doesn't mean perfection. Effective goal-setting creates a routine to move you in a positive direction.
Listen up for these (relatively) easy to enact tips!
SMART goals:
-Specific-who, what, where, when, why
-Measurable-how many/much? Think numbers. How many times? For how long?
-Achievable-Do I have the recourses and capabilities? If not, what am I missing?
-Realistic-It's within reach
-Timely-What's the deadline? When do I want to achieve this?

What is the "Bliss Point"? It sounds awesome, doesn't it? How can something described as blissful be so sinister?
You will be shocked to know that food manufacturers have spent millions of dollars to discover the exact proportions of sugar, fat and salt to hook you like a big fish. The bliss point is the exact point at which you eat one bite and then a million more. Gone are the days of food that is satisfying and wholesome. Welcome to the days of manipulation, obesity and BIG money.
It is sad that the American food system has come to this. If it comes in a package, you are assured to find an ingredient ending in -ose, which is a synonym for SUGAR. It's hidden in everything as: dextrose, maltose, fructose, glucose, malt syrup and corn syrup. You MUST read labels.
This episode isn't all negativity. In addition to giving you the "skinny" on sugar, we also give you tips on how to overcome this addiction. That's right; I said addiction. This isn't about willpower. It's about overcoming the Bliss Point that has been engineered to make you crave MORE.

"You've Got a Friend!"All of us in midlife know this James Taylor song. I hope you all have friends.; I'm sure you do. Midlife is a great time to invest in friendships. What the heck is the HPA axis??This week we're talking about the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal axis. This is the group of glands that produce hormones or messenger chemicals in our bodies that regulate our response to stress. What this means in layman's terms is that we are talking about cortisol, our sympathetic nervous system and our fight-or-flight response.
Today's world leaves many of us in a chronic state of stress. Our Cave Sisters understood that the fight-or-flight response was reserved for times when chased by a woolly mammoth. But our Modern Sisters see stress almost constantly, eliciting a chronic state of a 'turned on' sympathetic nervous system, adrenal stress and bad metabolic health.
We are here to show you the triggers of adrenal stress and describe real-life solutions for shedding some of the stress. We give you the physical repercussions of maintaining a high-stress lifestyle.
Midlife is time to enjoy, to reclaim your power and to tap into your parasympathetic nervous system. Join us on this journey to a happier, healthier life!

Our feet are our foundation; how do you treat yours??
This week we're tackling the not-so-sexy subject of feet. We get pedicures; we play footsie; some of us love a good foot massage. But what are our feet telling us?
We demand a lot from our feet. They provide us with a mode of transportation, keep us mobile and provide balance. Some of us suffer from foot maladies such as bunions, calluses or hammer toes.
In this episode we talk about the importance of caring for your foundation and we give you some tips for caring for your feet beyond a pedicure. We talk about balance (and the importance of the big toe) and we give you tips on footwear and grounding.
There are tons of helpful hints in here. We hope you find something useful in this episode. As always, we would really appreciate a review, so that we can share more info with more people! Please share this episode and subscribe!

Hello? Anybody home? Is there anyone listening?
What is your body trying to tell you? Are you listening?
Today we are talking about biofeedback - those little hints from your mind, body and soul that tell you if everything is going along swimmingly, or that something's going wrong.
Biofeedback is an easy, free way to gauge your body's response to the environment: what you put in it (food, thoughts, etc), what you put on it (clothes, lotions & potions, skincare), and how you talk to it and about it (loving, kind, grateful words or hateful, judgmental and accusatory words). Biofeedback is self-awareness and the first step in healing.
Cam and Amelia talk about this kind of thing ALL the time, but in this episode, we get down to the nitty-gritty. We talk about cues such as hunger, energy, mood, sex drive and cravings.
Join us as we teach you how to listen to your body; we give you tips for responding as well as sharing personal stories of our own journeys and challenges.
As always, we'd love to hear from you. Please consider rating the podcast and writing a review!

BOOM! I wish I could do sound effects but I can't. We're here today to talk about atomic habits. The basis for this talk is James Clear's bestselling book by the same name. Also, James Clear is a guest on Brene Brown's podcast on Spotify - that's a great listen as well.
Anyhoo...what are atomic habits and why do we need them?
Have you ever noticed that when you make lofty goals (we used to call them BHAG's in the 1990's), that you never quite get there? That's because biting off a huge chunk of behavior change at one time almost always leads to failure. What you need is a system. Tiny increments of change add up to BIG change over time.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia distill the principles of creating or recreating your systems to set you up for success. Consistency over intensity is the key. We give you the 4 things that build a habit and we give you the tools to unwind a habit as well.
This episode is chock-full of meaningful and practical information. As always, hit that subscribe button and leave us a review. Tell your friends about is and share this episode if it resonates with you.

The Four Agreements
They seem basic and almost intuitive don't they? But on closer inspection, these are hard tenets to live by and not really supported by our culture.
We are here to show you the ropes. We talk about The Four Agreements pretty much all the time on the podcast; we estimate at least once a month. So here is your quick-and-dirty, i.e. 'Cliff-notes" version of the 4 agreements and how they apply to midlife and how to live them. We tell which ones we struggle with the most and how we overcome that struggle.
Honestly, you can read this book on one sitting. We love it so much that we've included a link so you can purchase it in Cam's Amazon store.

Summertime is often considered 'break time' from habits...even healthy ones. What do you do to re-energize your health habits after a break?
Sometimes it's hard. We know what we need to do, but getting the motivation and discipline to do it is another story. But don't throw in the towel!
In this episode, Cam and Amelia share some real-life experiences of how they refocused after mental and physical breaks from a healthy lifestyle. With their usual humor, you will laugh with them and shake your head in agreement, as they share how they suffer the same temptations, struggles and rebounds as everyone else.
The easiest way to approach this is not thinking that you got off track at all, but viewing your life journey with grace and gratitude. After that, it's easy to consider what you get to do for your body to keep it healthy and strong.
We hope you find this talk helpful and encouraging. We're your biggest cheerleaders!

In this episode, Cam and Amelia unpack the anatomy of hurry. We talk about why this can be destructive and how to cure the symptoms of a hurried life.

What the heck are amino acids?
The short answer is that they are the building blocks of protein. The long answer is that some of them are made by the human body and some aren't. All of them are important to optimal human function.
You know that Cam and Amelia are all about prioritizing protein. This isn't only to support balanced nutrition and to feed working muscles (including the brain). There are other reasons to prioritize protein. But what kinds of protein? How are proteins different?
These amazing building blocks of protein called amino acids function in the body to help us break down food, repair body tissue, make hormones and brain chemicals, provide energy, help us sleep, fight infection and detox.
Learn more about amino acids.
This is a fun and science-y conversation. We geek out on the nutrition end of things, but we also tell you how getting the right blend of amino acids can help you feel better.

Whew! It is hot!
Yep, it's July and no matter where you live, unless it's the Southern Hemisphere, it's summertime! Cam and Amelia both live in locales where summertime heat can easily reach the 90's and the humidity.... well, let's just say it can feel like a sauna outside.
So what do we change when it's hot?
The answers can be individual and quite simple, but solutions to summer survival are important to consider.
How do you change your exercise routine?
How is your hydration status?
How does your diet change?
What about electrolyte balance?
How does your routine change when you go on vacation or travel?

How do you express love...to yourself?Originally published in 1992, Dr. Gary Chapman's book The Five Love Languages is world-famous and much acclaimed. Dr. Chapman's book sought to reinvigorate marriages and create stronger bonds between partners by teaching each individual to recognize how they wish to receive love AND how they express love.
In this episode of the Midlife Mommas, Cam and Amelia explore how we express love to ourselves. There is so much self-actualization going on in midlife and this might be a window into greater happiness. This is part of self-care. We unpack all 5 of the love languages:
Each one of these has value and we all give and receive love in all 5 ways at times. But most of us have a preferred way of expressing and recognizing love.
We hope you enjoy this subject as much as we enjoyed brining it to you.

'Biohacking' is all the rage now. Do you know what it is?
In the vernacular of the health and wellness space, biohacking is the use of habits, substances or practices that can increase the efficiency of your biology, often resulting in greater longevity (longer life) and easer living (fewer aches and pains, more contentment).
Cam and Amelia bring you some accessible and not-so-crazy biohacks. These are things we've used or done, are currently doing or strongly believe to be helpful in the quest for a longer, happier, more authentic existence. These are things as common and familiar as multi-vitamins or as 'out there' as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. If you're thinking about making some improvements, or you feel that lull of complacency in your health goals wearing thin, this is the episode for you.

We've been getting a lot of questions about dietary supplements, especially Prebiotics, Probiotics and Collagen. People want to know what these are, what they do and if they need them. While there is no 'cut-and-dry' answer to this question, Cam and Amelia give you some firm guidelines to go by.
We explain the difference between Prebiotics and Probiotics. We talk about collagen and how it helps heal the gut lining and promote immune health. As you know, the gut is the '2nd brain', so it's important to keep it healthy.
The world of dietary supplements can be confusing, so we help guide you through the maze of choices. We tell you why these supplements have become popular and explain what health ailments have led their popularity. But not only do we cover supplements, but we also tell you what foods naturally contain these things.

How has your approach to friendship changed in midlife?
Friends are important at any age, but Cam and Amelia have found them especially important in midlife. We explore the differences between the relationships we had in our early adulthood to the ones we have now. Women love to be in community, but it's important to set boundaries, invoke honesty and bring kindness into friendships....which we are much better able to do in midlife.
We hope you will join us for this fun and friendly conversation. We discuss how we have changed over the years and what different attributes we look for in our midlife friends than we did in our early adulthood. We hope you are as happy in your friendships as we are!

Guess what? If you were born between the mid 1960's and 1979, you are a Gen X'er!
It's the week after Mother's Day and we are talking about all things motherhood. Whether you are a mother or are reflecting on your mother, we all have mothers in our lives who have affected who we are. We thank them, applaud them and love them.
Join Cam and Amelia as we walk down memory lane and discuss the freedom of being children in the 1970's, being latchkey kids, having chore lists and riding our bikes all over town. We talk about how these experiences have shaped who we are as mothers.
Fast forward 40 years where kids are glued to screens, shuttled to soccer, volleyball, baseball and swimming and have information at their fingertips. Us 70's kids have learned how to approach the world in a whole new way as we watch our kids navigate the information age.
Gen X kids had to wait in line to use the phone, look up numbers in a paper phone book and shopped for Christmas presents in the Sears catalogue. Millennial kids use cell phones, Google things and shop online. Oh what a difference!
We cover all things mothers; from the cool things our moms did to the ways we wanted to be different from them. This is a fun and happy episode, ya'll. We hope you'll join us.

Ugh! Why am I getting pimples at my age??
This question is almost as common as 'where did this spare tire around my midsection come from?'.
There are many reasons for breakouts in midlife. Cam and Amelia cover some of the most common reasons and we tell you how we handle ours. This episode literally came about as we were comparing notes about zits on our foreheads and jawlines. There are some commonalities among women who get breakouts in midlife, but some things may be unique to your climate, skincare routine, stress less or hormone status.
Just know that you're not alone.
We cover what causes acne in general (Pro tip: it's not chocolate), how it's related to gut health because PS. everything is related to gut health and offer you a ton of tools to combat this troublesome aspect of midlife.

Whoops! Sometimes we all need a reset.
Join Cam and Amelia as we discuss some 'ah-ha' moments that led us to record the Three R's: Rest Reframing and Recognizing. I'm not gonna lie. This was a tough one. Realizing that we might be a little off kilter and that we might be going down a negative path is sometimes hard.
Triggering events make some people feel angry, some resentful, some embarrassed and some just plain tired. Many times, we don't even realize this is happening.
This is self-actualization in progress. Midlife is the perfect time to interrupt bad behaviors and take control of our self talk. Using rest as a backdrop for this, we talk about reframing our thoughts for a more positive outlook. Finally, the main event, recognizing when this is happening is the hardest of all.
If you, like us, are struggling a little bit with this, you'll love this episode. As always, we bring you real girlfriend talk in real time. As we explore and are curious about our actions and reactions to midlife, we bring you right along with us.

Gals! I know this is NOT a fun or PC subject, but we must talk about it. Bowel movements are one of the most natural of functions and a huge indicator of health. It's weird because dudes talk about this all the time; so why shouldn't we?? It's nothing to be embarrassed about.
You should be checking your urine color and stool consistency daily. It's part of assessing your health. So find out what your poop is telling you in this episode. We promise that it's not too gross. This is real talk (like all our episodes are) informing you of some things you really need to evaluate in everyday life.
There are tons of things that can affect your poop. We go over them. There are many organs involved in making poop. We tell you what those are. We talk about the pitfalls of 'not going' every day and what your poop should look like. So tune in; this will be a fun(ny) one.

While similar to what it has been, your gut in midlife is changing. We are here to talk about the midlife gut and some of the changes that you can expect.
In recent years, gut health has been all the rage in the health and wellness space. We want to demystify it. Gut health is important because the gut is referred to as the 'second brain'. What you eat affects all aspects of life, including cognitive and emotional function. It follows the old adage of 'garbage in, garbage out'.
With a plethora of convenience and processed foods constantly available, it's easier than ever to eat on the run, using nutrient-bereft foods that aren't satiating and could be addictive. Adding sugar to many processed foods makes them 'hyper-palatable' while severely damaging the gut microbiome and possibly the gut lining, setting you up for a leaky gut or worse.
There are many signs of an unhealthy gut, and we cover many of them in this episode. We explain what organs and parts make up the gut and why each part is vital to proper digestion and good health.
We talk about inflammation and give you a 'starter' protocol for creating a healthy balance in the gut.
We hope you join us for this informative episode.

Remember the book series 'Chicken Soup for the...'? Started in 1993, these books provided a "story" that helped you help yourself and make your world a better place to live. Maybe this was the beginning of the 'self-care' movement.
Chicken Soup for the Midlife Body and Soul is meant to have you question what you are doing and whether or not you can add something that brings joy to your life, or more probably, is there something that you can drop that no longer services you?
Cam and Amelia are all about authenticity, honesty and living your best life. And guess how gets to decide what that looks like?? YOU do!
We hope that all our episodes empower you. But this on in particular is a guide to the many aspects that affect your wellbeing of mind, body and spirit. We give you what inspires us; now get out there and find out what inspires YOU!

What does your 'morning routine' look like?
What morning routine, you may ask. Some folks make mornings a mad dash, rolling out of bed, grabbing a cup of java, and running out the door. Others prefer a more leisurely approach, luxuriating in bed, slowing arising, meditating, and enjoying coffee while watching the sunrise.
Most of us in midlife like some kind of routine that grounds us for the day; in fact, an Instagram survey showed that 67% of us have a routine. 50% of us include fitness in our morning routine, and 2/3 of us said quiet time is important in the mornings.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia explore what a morning routine looks like and how each element of the routine can be beneficial. Each step might not be necessary to every person, but we feel like many of these things will resonate with most of you.

Boy, is this important! As we've told you before, sleep is one of the pillars of health, a foundation, you might say.
We care so much about sleep, that this is the 2nd time we've addressed it. The first time was June of 2021, (Listen HERE), and here we are again, just after the change to daylight savings, talking about sleep. It's THAT important.
Learning how to sleep is a real thing. Maybe you slept 'like a baby' in your 20s, but you're not sleeping that well now and wondering why. There are a myriad of reasons why sleep in midlife is a challenge. It all matters from hot flashes to noise to blue light to alcohol consumption, and it affects your sleep.
We tackle all these things and more in this episode. Plus, we give you some tips for overcoming.

What expectations are you holding on to because someone told you you should?

Do you 'take your thoughts to court'?
How much of what you think is actually truth?

This week we’re here to talk about hormone replacement or HRT. Many women experiment with various forms of hormone therapy, such as the use of birth control pills. We have both used this and other hormone replacement therapies and we are going to tell you our experience.
We are not doctors and cannot tell you what is right for YOU, but we want to share some facts so that you are armed with your own questions to ask yourself and your medical provider.
Some women sail through menopause without HRT, while others have found the symptoms to severely decrease quality of life and have opted to supplement with estrogen, progesterone and possibly testosterone. This is a delicate, precious and joyous time in life. To figure out if HRT is right for you, we encourage you to listen to this episode, employ the resources we’ve provided and start asking questions!

Have you ever had that little anxious moment....right before sneezing when you feared that you'd leak the slightest dribble of urine? It's a real concern for many women in midlife.
We are here to discuss this difficult, embarrassing and very common subject. The first thing to know is that while common, this is not normal. Many of use are told by our doctors that a little urine leakage while coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising or lifting is just an unfortunate result of aging. But it's not. This a result of weak pelvic floor muscles.
In this episode we talk about :
At the end of this episode, we posit how your pelvic floor affects your intimacy and we invite you to tell US if this subject is important to you and if you'd like us to do an episode on it.

Greetings Midlifers! We are so excited to bring you this episode. Midsection weight gain is a concern for many. The first time we addressed this subject was back on September 22, 2021, in an episode called Belly Fat, Insulin, and Midlife, so if you haven't listened to that one, check it out as well.
There are many reasons for midlife weight gain, not the least of which is a decrease in our 'warrior' hormone, estrogen. But decreased muscle mass, mindless snacking, and a whole host of other things are contributors as well.
Join Cam and Amelia as we walk you through the reasons for midlife and midsection weight gain and give tons of ways to reduce it. Not everything works for everybody, so definitely listen to the whole episode to get every little tidbit.

Most of us consume some amount of alcohol and/or caffeine. Both of these things are common in our culture. In fact, how many times have you called a friend and said, 'Want to meet for coffee?' or 'Want to meet for a drink?'
All of our systems, body, and mind, change in midlife. We've been talking about midlife changes for months! This week we tackle caffeine and alcohol. We are all about taste everything, binge on nothing, and alcohol and caffeine are not exceptions.
We teach you how and why these substances affect you differently in midlife. We talk about caffeine as a 'pick-me-up' and alcohol to 'raise the floor'.
We hope you join us for this fun, fascinating talk about 2 of our culture's most abundant and favorite 'drugs'. We give you our personal strategies and what alternatives we use. What could your today self do for your tomorrow self to show affection and self care? This week's episode is about using today to make tomorrow easier. How does one do that you might ask?
First of all, love who you are right this minute. In fact, wrap your arms around yourself and give yourself a hug; or look in the mirror and blow yourself a kiss. Setting up your future self for success is all about loving yourself NOW.
We talked about our current selves last week. What do we need to do for our future selves?
These are just a few of the amazing tips we give you in this episode. We really hope you tune in for more...plus the fun banter that Cam and Amelia always bring. Remember, you can expect real life stories with dash of humor and a ton of truth.

If not now, when?
In this 2nd part of our 3-part series on Gifts to Give Your Midlife Self, we discuss the present.
How has your life changed in midlife? Are you finally enjoying yourself?
Do you tell yourself that you'll enjoy life when you.....(fill in the blank)? Sometimes we set goals, and think, 'I'll be happy when these goals are reached.' Whether it's weight loss, a professional accomplishment, raising kids to adulthood or simply getting your chores done, we all do this from time to time. The problem with allowing your happiness to hinge on a goal, or a future accomplishment, is that it never comes! Once that goal is reached, there's always something else on the horizon.
Even when you reach a goal, the feeling of success is temporary. You may feel euphoric for a time, but then you have to get back to 'real life'.
Cam and Amelia propose that you live for today! Carpe Diem. This means living 'mindfully'.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia share personal stories of how we've conquered reliving the past or living in fear of the future. You can't change the past and you can't dictate the future, so why not be in the here and now??
We cover the pitfalls that keep us living in the past or fearing the future. We talk about the negative soundtracks that play in our heads, tying us to a reality that avoids the current moment. This takes real effort, but it is SO worth it.
All we have is the current moment. Join us and learn how to live in it!

We are SO excited to bring you this 3-part series to being 2021!
We know Christmas is over but doesn't want more gifts? This series is 3 Gifts to Give Your Midlife Self:
This idea came from Jon Acuff, who hosts the podcast, All It Takes Is a Goal and we thought it was so fabulous that we are riffing on it to apply specifically to midlife.
So what does it mean to forgive your former self?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it's a sign that you aren't forgiving your former self..
Join Cam and Amelia as we give you real life examples of how we've inadvertently robbed ourselves of joy by reliving questionable decisions and actions. We tell you how we short-circuited the negative self-talk and moved on to more joy and contentment.
We give you our tips for letting go of expectations (joy killers) and how to experience, acknowledge and work through any feelings of guilt or shame and then how to let it go!As always, please subscribe, leave us a review, and we would love it if you'd take a screenshot of yourself listening and post on Social and tag us, @thehelpfulplate, @heymomma_cam, @midlife.mommas.

We have lots of questions when we travel. Maybe we get a little anxious too.
If you aren't a frequent traveler, there are many questions that you may ask yourself. You may even make a checklist. If you are like me, you have to remind yourself, 'What is the worst that can happen?' And then you realize that never has the sky fallen when you forgot something or when your flight got delayed.
In midlife, we worry about the darnedest things. Some of us even obsess. But there is an answer. Take a deep breath. Remember your 'minimums' and then sit back and enjoy the ride.
Join Cam and Amelia as we discuss travel. Whether it's day travel or overnight travel; whether you're traveling for work of for pleasure, we discuss tips and tricks that we've learned that have helped us navigate travel during this crazy, wonderful time of midlife!

The human brain is programmed to assess situations as quickly and as easily as possible. In essence, it's programmed to be efficient so that energies can be used for more life-sustaining, or life-saving acts. This means that the brain oftentimes fills in gaps of information with assumptions. Many times these assumptions are correct, based on past experiences or "facts" that we already know. But other times these assumptions are false, based on a hunch that is not founded in fact.
The easiest false assumption to describe is a stereotype. But there are other types of false assumptions that cause a great amount of emotional pain, mental exhaustion and strife.
Join Cam and Amelia as we explore different types of false assumptions. You may not even realize that you are filling your brain with false assumptions and acting on, or more importantly, failing to act, based on assumptions that are wrong. You are limiting your joy by allowing false assumptions to rule in your life.

Boy, this is a tough one, y'all. If you are in a position to take care of an aging parent or are looking at this in the future, you will want to listen to this episode. This might not seem like a festive subject, but the Holidays are time when we think of family. Midlifers are forced to see aging parents as they really. But don't fret; this can be a bonding experience as well. So take heart! This is candid look at this time in life.
Take a ringside seat as Amelia talks about her dad being diagnosed with leukemia and Cam describes watching her mom take care of an aging mother. We cover the difficulties of being a parent and a child. We talk about stresses with siblings. This is an all-encompassing, raw look at being the child of aging parents.
We hope you like this episode as much as you liked the one on being the moms of grown-ups. This is real life folks. So listen up!

This is a great episode, y’all. We recorded it before Thanksgiving and it got pushed back twice! 😊
But I’m glad it did because as we get closer and closer to year’s end, it’s a great time to examine our priorities.
Cam just got married. Amelia just started a new job. Starting new things is hard and challenging but oh, so rewarding and what better time to adjust our expectations and manage our impulses??
We hope you love this episode as much as we loved recording it. We talk about how we focus on diet, exercise, work life, home life, being a parent/child/friend/sibling and what those roles mean vis-a-vis our expectations.
We cover several difficult conversations to have with yourself.
Let's face it; life oftentimes gives us lemons. But in midlife, we are free to reframe how we view things. We can let go of old stereotypes, false beliefs and values. We can embrace the truth of who we have become and guess what? It’s a beautiful thing!

How do we limit ourselves?
What mindsets, attitudes, or belief systems are we holding onto that limit us?
How would we think and act if we were assured success?
This episode of Midlife Mommas is a mind-bender, and I mean that in the most positive way. Freshly off the Thanksgiving holiday, where we practiced gratitude, Cam and Amelia discuss limits. Most often, limits are things we impose on ourselves! It’s worth examining why we think we are limited.
Midlife is a place to grow and expand. We can be adventurous, and we want you to be brave. Cam is about to get married, and Amelia has just started a new job. Listen along as we tell you how we found the strength to make BIG changes. Hear what tools we used to muster courage and assess our options to make better, less self-limiting decisions!

Are you the 'Norman Rockwell painting? We're not!
Whether anticipating the Holidays leaves you feeling anxious, joyful, hopeful or excited, this is the episode for you! Cam and Amelia have a frank conversation about Holidays past and what we anticipate for this year. We talk about holiday travel, holiday eating and dealing with 'difficult' family members.
We cover:
We know the Holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and fellowship, but sometimes, too much 'togetherness' can lead to challenging situations. We want you to know that you are not alone! Managing all the emotions of midlife in addition to holiday stress can be, well, stressful.
This was a fun episode to record. We laughed a lot. We hope you enjoy an insider look at what the Holidays will look like for Cam and Amelia. But even more, we hope that this episode leaves you well-equipped to 'show up for what shows up'!

Is your midlife self experiencing change....besides the obvious, of course (hello, Menopause!) Are you becoming a Grandma, changing jobs, getting married, sending your last child to college? How are you feeling about all this change??
We are definitely experiencing change! Cam is getting married, and Amelia started a new job. Join us as we share our 'ah-ha moments as we navigate change in midlife.
As our ovaries are singing sayonara, how well do we cope with change? Our ovaries produce estrogen, our stress warrior. When they are sputtering, our adrenals take over. But this isn't the only job of our adrenals, so we must be kind to them. What is the answer to this conundrum?
We hope you enjoy this frank conversation. We share our personal experiences of change and how we have and are managing!
We talk about sleep (one of our favorite subjects), and how to deal with the concept that Life IS uncertain. Cam reminds us that we must show up to what shows up. What a great concept, but how hard is it to accept this and act on it??

Midlife Power - what does that mean?
Sometimes in midlife, we can feel a little lost and out of control. This new phase of life is marked by empty- nesting and changes in our bodies. Many times our thoughts and feelings are changing as well. If we are not mindful and strategic about our attitudes, it can feel like we're on a roller coaster. In this episode of the Midlife Mommas podcast.....Cam and Amelia tackle the Myths associated with Menopause. You know those terrible-awful things we assume happen to us during menopause? We are here to comfort you, educate you, and inspire you about this fabulous time called Midlife!!
We debunk these popular beliefs about Menopause:
1. This is the end; I'm old.
2. I will stop making hormones.
3. My sex life is over!4. Weight gain is inevitable.
We talk about the GOOD parts of midlife. We explain your hormone roller-coaster. And don't miss our talk about sex! Weight gain? No problem. We tell you why we are prone to put on a few pounds in the mid-section, and we give you practical tips to circumvent this pitfall.
We hope you'll join us for this fun, riveting, informational chat about this time in life...MIDLIFE!
Who knew that there would be stress in Midlife?
Did you know that your body doesn't distinguish between mental stress, physical stress, and emotional stress? Did you know that estrogen is our stress-fighting warrior?
Stress can be defined as the fear or anxiety that comes with uncertainty. With our stress-fighting warrior declining, how do we deal with stress in Midlife?
Join Cam and Amelia as we explore what makes us feel stressed and how we deal with it.
Each of us has a different capacity for stress. Other things are stressful for different people. But we give you some practical tips to help you deal with it.
While there is no magic bullet, we can do things to live a happier, less stressful life. Things like spending time in nature, journaling, grounding, and spending time with people you love can all be helpful tools.
We hope you join us on this real-life look at stress in Midlife!

Did you know that in midlife you lose 1% of lean muscle mass per year?
Also, did you know that lean muscle mass helps you retain bone density (so you don't break a hip!) and helps with blood sugar control?
Midlife is great time to concentrate on building lean muscle and one of the ways we can do that is by eating more protein.
In this episode we explore:
Do you remember the 1980's breakfast of a bagel with cream cheese and orange juice? Cam and Amelia unpack why this wasn't optimum. We explain why the diet culture in which we grew up sabotaged our metabolisms and our mindsets and relationships with food.
Join us for this super-informative but not-so-sciencey look at the the macronutrient: ***Protein!

How does our skin change in midlife?
How is midlife skin similar to pubescent skin?
In this episode, Cam and Amelia talk about hormonal shifts that affect the skin, including sun damage, skin texture changes, and other skin concerns that occur in midlife.
We unpack what treatments might be helpful as well as products to avoid. Skin treatments are largely unregulated, so you have to know what you're buying. What you put on your skin is absorbed into your body, so you have to know what elements are carcinogens and what might be merely a marketing ploy to get your money. Skin supplements can be surprisingly simple. Think jojoba oil, coconut oil, and essential oils
We also cover skin conditions that are more prevalent in midlife. Think crepey skin, wrinkles, and eczema. We give you tips and tricks and holistic approaches to deal with these annoyances.
This might not be the sexiest episode, but we cover all the THINGS related to skin. We want you to have beautiful, healthy skin....the natural way.
We hope you'll join us.

Do you have a nagging injury?
Do you feel like there must be a better way to gain more energy, get better control of your skin health, gut health, and immunity?
Are you interested in Ayurveda and other traditional healing modalities?
Some of these therapies seem scary, but we unpack these for you.

These therapies aid your body in 'taking the trash out'. They help reduce inflammation; some may help reduce anxiety and depression and help your skin glow.

High fructose corn syrup is a $3.6 billion industry in the US. But what is it?
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener made from corn syrup that is quickly converted to glucose. It is a cheaper alternative to sucrose, which is simple table sugar.
What is HCFS in? The short answer is just about everything.
The food industry has high-jacked your taste buds, and there are billions of dollars to be had by doing so. This industry has scientists determining how to get you to buy more processed foods based on their *hyper-palatability.
The sad truth? It's killing us.* 88% of Americans are insulin resistant.
What does that mean? Insulin is the hormone that 'shuttles' glucose into cells. It acts as a key. As our culture consumes more and more glucose (>38 pounds/year), our bodies are having a hard time keeping up. We are becoming immune to the effects of insulin.
The result? Insulin resistance, glucose toxicity, and ultimately Type II Diabetes.
This is a GROWING health crisis. Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and hyperlipidemia (too much fat in the blood) are the trifecta that causes 'Metabolic Syndrome,' and it's taking more and more money and pills to correct.
Big Pharma is making millions while Americans die.
Join Cam and Amelia on the roller coaster ride of insulin resistance. Find out how to identify habits that are contributing to the problem and how to create habits to stop it. (This IS reversible!)

Motherhood has many stages, but once you are a Mom, your life is forever changed. We worried about developmental milestones when our children were young; we fretted over schoolboy and girl relationships. We helped with school projects and looked forward to taking pictures at prom.
But what happens when our kids grow up? What are the highs and the lows of being a mother of adults? How do we deal with these people our children have grown into being?
Join Cam and Amelia for a frank talk about being the mothers of grown children. This is a new phase that we both love, and we'd love to share our insights, fears, pitfalls, and joys with you.

Cam and Amelia are all about a whole food existence. But sometimes, it is prudent and helpful to supplement a whole-food-based diet.
Why you might ask? The relative density of nutrients in mass produced food has dramatically decreased over the past 50 years. The tomato you buy at the grocery store will not be as nutritious a the tomato is grown in someone's back yard.
So what do we do?
Where do we turn for extra nutrition, stress support, and support for athletics?
There are many supplements on the market. Did you know that 50% of Americans take supplements? This unregulated industry brings in billions of dollars every year to producers.
However, all supplements are not created equal, and all are not for everyone.
Join us as we discuss our favorite supplements, why they take them, what brought them to the supplement market, and what brands we trust. We start with the basics such as Omega-3's to fight inflammation, Vitamin D3 with K2 and B-complex. Then we move on to 'adaptogens,' mushroom supplements, and hormone support.
If you are searching for stress or energy support or just want to achieve optimal health through maximum nutrition, this is the episode for you!

Join us this week for an empowering and helpful talk with Dr. Ellen, The Midlife Whisperer. Dr. Ellen is a registered dietician, a Ph.D. psychologist, and a mindful/self-compassion coach. She has a new book: Rock Your Midlife: 7 Steps to Transform Yourself and Make Your Next Chapter Your Best Chapter.
We tackle the difficult subject of the 'psychology of food.' Dr. Ellen explains how psychology - the study of mind and behavior affects the body and how food impacts psychology. 'We are made of cells, and those cells are made of the food we eat.' - Dr. Ellen.
To help change behaviors about food, you need to understand what's driving the behavior. Food choices are rarely about the food itself.
What's the biggest challenge??(We must) embrace who we are and to love ourselves exactly as we are. -Dr. EllenIt's hard to change a body we hate, so we tend to medicate with food. This creates a vicious cycle involving shame and hiding. Who wants to do something that makes you feel like you're losing? This is what drives the multi-million dollar 'diet culture', which rarely imparts lasting change.
Join us as we teach you how to really change, how to tap into your caring and compassion hormone - oxytocin, which is more likely to help you create lasting change, rather than relying on your pleasure receptor - dopamine.
Dr. Ellen is a wealth of knowledge. Her energy is fantastic - you can hear the joy in her voice. Dr. Ellen has been helping women find joy and health while not feeling deprived, but by tapping into their true life force. We know you'll love her as much as we do.

Why is my exercise not working?
Cam and Amelia explore how exercise methods and routines that worked in our 20's and 30's don't work in midlife. We explore the need for strength training. We examine what we need 'on board' to know if we are prepared to exercise for the day. We look at the foundation of a midlife exercise plan and the reasons we do it!
We explore:
-Sample strength training workout
- Time commitment
- Home workouts
- Bodyweight exercises
-HIIT (high-intensity interval training)
-What to do when something isn't working (hormone changes?)
What are the Benefits?
-Increased bone density
-better blood sugar control
-toned body
-combat muscle loss that naturally happens with age
-gaining confidence!
Join us for an honest chat and Cam's expertise on this subject that we all wonder about in midlife.

Join Cam and Amelia in an honest look at how we see other women. Most of us have a 'default' position. Some of us are aware of why we see other women the way we do. Maybe you have always felt loved and appreciated by other women, or maybe you work in a very competitive field where everyone* must compete for time, space and success.
We unpack many of the reasons for defaulting to a competitive viewpoint.
-Is it our own insecurities?
-What triggers us?
-When we are criticized, what do we need to examine in ourselves?
-Is our defensive stance due to a previous embarrassment or sense of shame?
-What do we do to pull down that wall of defensiveness?
Then we explore:
-How do you build a community?
-Who are you vulnerable with?
-How can you be in a community with women who do not share common belief systems or common goals?
-How does the way you form a community incorporate your boundaries?Relationships all start with yourself. We encourage you to be intentional and selective, but most of all, vulnerable. Once you've defined your boundaries, you can invite people into your inner circle, your community, or simply commune with them as part of the larger community. It's all OK. You are worth it! Midlife Relationships: What do we get out of them and what can we learn? If you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with, what does that say? Have you taken inventory of your relationships? Do you have that one friend with which you share your daily life? Maybe another with whom you share business ideas? Humans are 'herd' animals, inherently wired to live in community. Building quality friendships is more satisfying than maintaining a myriad of casual acquaintances.
Relationships in Midlife are important! While we were raising little people, it was hard to tend to and nurture relationships outside your nuclear family. But now is the time! We can gain greater depth in relationship than we ever have before because we have gained a greater sense of self, greater confidence and more joy! We are in a better position to give to others from a place of fullness.
We must use this time to reconnect, with depth, caring and compassion.
If you are in an intimate relationship, this needs tending also. Do you go on dates? Do you exercise together, eat meals together, run errands together, engage in pillow talk? All of these activities are opportunities to reconnect.
Cam and Amelia talk about utilizing family as support systems, finding and enforcing our boundaries, using the 'awesome - awful' test and offering our children 'roots and wings'.
This is a fun, in-depth talk about ALL relationships and how we manage them, how important they are and what practical steps you can take to foster them.
Good relationships start with a good relationship with yourself! You are worth it!
Exploring the Mental, Emotional and Spiritual aspects of JOY in midlife!
In the last episode, we talked about finding JOY in your physical body and in your physical surroundings.
In this episode, we cover a lot of ways to find joy in your emotional, mental and spiritual space.
Take inventory: How are you feeling about your emotional, mental and spiritual health?
What lights you up? What brought you JOY as a child?
Cam and Amelia explore:
We explain how you can leverage these things to bring more JOY to your life!
Start your day with grounding. "Quiet time and alone time allow you to tap into the joy inside you." -Cam
Recentering: "Bookend your day with something that services you well and feeds something you need." - Amelia
Does nourishing others bring you joy?
What are the specific habits you can cultivate in yourself to bring you joy?How do you stay connected? If you find yourself in a negative space, choose the next happier thing! If this episode helped you find JOY in some way, take a screenshot of you listening and post it to your Instagram stories, and tag us, @thehelpfulplate, @heymomma_cam, @midlife.mommas.Join us on the midlife journey!

How can it be improved to bring you more joy?

Do you have a favorite number? What number(s) haunt you?
Our culture is inundated with a need for metrics. How do you cope with evaluating yourself according to a number? It starts at birth. Babies fall into certain percentiles with respect to weight, height, and head circumference. We add on to the notion of 'worth by numbers' in school when we are told our reading comprehension or SAT score.
As adults, we buy into numbers such as weight and salary to indicate worthiness.
Cam and Amelia are here to debunk the notion that numbers define you. We share our experience with numbers and how we got out of that dangerous mindset.
During midlife, we should be experiencing JOY. Listen to this episode for a refreshing look at midlife - number-free!
